Full textThe initial objective of the present work is to investigate how Horace organizes his poems and books and how he operates the transition from one poem to the next. In order to accomplish that, his predecessors both in Greek as in Latin poetry were studied. Subsequently, it focuses on the Book of Epodes, which can be clearly be divided into two parts: the first, from epod. 1 to 10, and the second from epod. 11 to 17. Such division is the basis of this thesis, which proposes a distinction between iambus and epodes in Horaces invective work. Horace made use not only of Archaic Greek and Hellenistic but also of Latin models. From this study, some criteria for the proposed translation in verse were derived: this is the first poetic translation into Portuguese of the whole Book of Epodes. Finally, all the poetic translations into Portuguese that could be found were gathered and they are preceded by a brief introduction.
Meyer, John Clifford. "The animal themes in Horace's Epodes." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/86343.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis focused on the animal themes while attempting to make a comprehensive analysis of such themes as they were portrayed in the Epodes of Horace. A close analysis of each poem that contains animals was made. The aim of such an analysis was twofold, firstly to arrive at a possible interpretation of said themes in each specific poem; secondly to indicate how Horace used these animal themes to enhance the meaning of the Epodes. To support this second aim the various animal themes were arranged according to a list of five functions associated with the themes, namely invective, irony and humour, exempla, metaphor and colouring or setting. Finally the investigation aimed at achieving not only a better understanding of the animal themes per se but also an enhanced appreciation of the entire collection.

- Catalizador tipo amino fenol.
- Pigmentación anticorrosiva no tóxica.
- Butil-bencil ftalato como plastificante.
- Disolventes: metoxipropanol y metiletilcetona.

During the 2009/2010 season, a trial was conducted in 18 years old „D‟Agen‟ prune trees, grafted on Marianna 2624, planted at 5x5m in a orchard located at the El Principal de Pirque, Pirque, Metropolitan Region, Chile. The objective was to determine the effect of crop load and time of harvest on yield and fruit quality. For this we selected 27 trees during the winter season, which were pruned to leave three levels of crop load. In each crop load level, harvest was done differently: early, late or three “selective pickings”, done at the beginning, middle and end of the harvest season. The size of trees was measured as trunk cross sectional area and as a fraction of intercepted PAR. At harvest, yield, fruit number, average fruit weight, firmness and soluble solids were determined. After that, fruit was sun dried and drying time, fruit size, pulp/stone ratio, moisture and defects were evaluated. Yield increased as crop load increased. Higher crop load and higher yield were obtained with lighter pruning. Fruit size was reduced as crop load increased, resulting in larger fruit those “selective picked” or late harvested from trees with medium pruning. There was an interaction between time of harvest and pruning level for soluble solids content, fruit early harvested from medium pruned trees showed lower soluble solids, while late harvested from severe pruning trees have the highest soluble solids content. After removing the effect of crop load, there was no effect of harvest time on fruit firmness, but there were differences according pruning intensity, with a higher firmness for severe pruning. Also, there were no differences for other quality attributes, as fresh weight, pulp/stone ratio and drying time.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to compare the performance of the Epos DGPS service providedby Cartesia and network DGPS, a prototype service from Lantmäteriet. The thesisalso consists of two smaller investigations on a suitable methodology for network DGPSmeasurements and a comparison of network DGPS with its corresponding service in Norway. The Epos service is based on a one way communication, where the corrections are sent tothe rover from the closest reference station through the RDS Channel on P4. NetworkDGPS is built on the VRS technique, where the corrections are calculated for the specificposition of the rover based on a network of reference stations. The collection of data is made according to the standard of Lantmäteriet, hence the measurementsare made with an optimal view to the satellites and under the worst conditionsregarding the baselines to the reference stations. The measurements of the two services aremade simultaneous and with identical instruments. The investigation shows clear differencesin the performance of the two services considering both horizontal and verticalmeasurements. The largest deviation from the "true value" for 95 % of the measurementsis for network DGPS between one third to half as large in plane and two third as large inheight measurement as for Epos. The measurements in plane show however a systematicdeviation.A suitable methodology for network DGPS measurements has been investigated where thetime from that the instrument start to receive corrections to that a measurement should bestarted and the duration of the measurements are looked into.It focuses on collection of position data, where the deviations in plane and height, thehorizontal and vertical precision and the signal to noise ratio has been studied. The investigationhas not shown that a certain waiting time is needed before the measurements areinitiated or that the measuring time has an effect on the result under clear view conditions. The comparison of the Swedish Network DGPS service and the Norwegian service is builton series of position data collected during a long period of time. The investigation showsthat the two systems work quite similar.

Full textIt was argued that poor thinking styles that lead to distortion in feelings of mistrust evident in the paranoia symptom, in turn led to deterioration in cognition. Other symptoms did not demonstrate a cross influential effect. Previous research suggesting that symptoms act independently of each other over time supports the results of independence of the other symptoms. Further research was suggested by linking different levels of psychosis research of the aetiological factors (e.g. genetic factors), neuropathology (e.g., reduced synapse density) and phenomenology (e.g., positive and negative symptoms) into an integrative framework. It was suggested that structural equation modelling as exemplified in the thesis could be used as a technique to examine how these differing levels could be investigated under a unified theory of psychosis based upon the neurodevelopmental hypothesis.

Abstract: Through this project we have tried to show a commented edition on some journalistic texts written by Antonio de Alcântara Machado to Diário da Noite, a newspaper in Rio de Janeiro, between August 14th, 1934 and April 5th, 1935. In this period the modernist, being the director of the newspaper, used to be responsible for its editorials. A hundred and nine unpublished texts have been collected to become part of our edition. We have decided on a thematic division and within each part the texts obey a chronological order. In the end of the final volume, there is an A to Z. The first volume is dedicated to the analysis of the included texts. Once the political theme has come up as the most frequent one, it has become important to deal with the historical and political context of the period that Antonio wrote to the newspaper in Rio de Janeiro. In order to make this period more comprehensible, we have chosen to face important facts that happened before, such as the Constitutional Revolution in 1932 and the 1930 Revolution. We can observe the modernist intellectual and journalist' s critica1 view throughout the chosen texts, mainly when the author refers to Getúlio Vargas' govemment. Being from São Paulo and a volunteer in the Constitutional Revolution, he supports democracy and a govemment based on a constitution when he attacks Vargas. In some texts, it is possible to detect the author's literary side. There we can identify the presence of fictional aspects that take us back to António's " Gaetinho" "Carmela" e" Liseta". These aspects also permit our recognizing, not only the politician, but also the modernist intellectual that did not give up the ideaIs of an esthetic revolution, nor the national rea1itythat were very much related to his generation

Full textThis thesis focuses on the role of galaxy clusters in cosmology and galaxy evolution. I use multi-wavelenght photometric and spectroscopic observations (optical, mm, near/mid- IR) which I analyse with statistical methods. For a sample of clusters detected by the Planck satellite and re-observed with the Gemini optical telescope, I have studied the dynamics of member galaxies to probe their mass and understand possible systematics affecting such estimates, of crucial importance in cluster cosmology at present. Within the CARLA (Clusters Around Radio Loud AGN) collaboration, I examine morphology and stellar populations of galaxies in clusters and proto-clusters in their first assembly phases (z>1.4), with the aim of shedding light on the quenching of star formation and the role of the environment on galaxy evolution

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a native plant from the Andean region of South America whose nutritional value can exceed those of traditional cereals. Several studies have shown that quinoa is sensitive to photoperiod during its development. However, no accurate records exist for accessions from different production areas along a latitudinal distribution of Chilean quinoa regarding the photoperiod effect on the duration of its vegetative phase. The duration of the vegetative phase is a key component of the adaptation of annual crops to different environments. In the case of quinoa, one of the reasons for proposing its cultivation as an alternative to the current existing crops, besides its nutritional value and tolerance to adversity, is its earliness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two photoperiods applied from quinoa planting on the duration of the vegetative phase. For this purpose, work was conducted with three accessions: “Yellow” from the Chilean Altiplano, “Peach” from the Region of Coquimbo and “Baer” from Southern Chile. Plants were grown under 15 and 9 hours of light. The temperature was maintained at 20± 2ºC throughout the test. In comparing the responses obtained in the short and long photoperiods, it was found that in the latter all accessions increased the duration of their vegetative phase, this increase being 33 days in the “Yellow” accession, 25 days in “Baer” and 23 days in “Peach”. Consequently, the long-day photoperiod delayed the time of floral initiation in all three quinoa accessions, resulting in an increased number of floral initiation nodes ( 13 nodes in “Yellow”, 5 in “Peach” and 7 in “Baer”). It was found that photoperiod sensitivity (PPS, ºCdh-1) varied between 64,8 and 92,8 in the accessions evaluated.

Full textThis work presents new explorations into the use of agent technology applied to the protection of power systems. We broadly define an agent to be an autonomous piece of software capable of interacting with its environment. Our investigation centers on the use of agents within an electric power grid using a private communication network, termed a utility intranet, based on internet technology. Our goal is to create practical agents that can be examined in realistic situations. To facilitate this aim, a new platform has been developed, EPOCHS, which allows agents to operate in an environmental that combines proven electric power electromagnetic and electromechanical transient simulators with a popular network communication simulation engine. We developed primary and a backup protection system using agent technology and evaluated this system within the EPOCHS environment. The agent-based system studied improved on traditional methods. Results illustrating the performance and viability of agent-based protection system are presented.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest recorded story known to humanity. It has a long and complex textual history. The final version of the epic, generally known as the standard version, was produced about 1200 B.C. in the Babylonian dialect of Akkadian by a priest and scribe named Sin-leqi-unninni. The cuneiform tablets upon which the epic was recorded, were rediscovered during the nineteenth century when European archaeologists started digging in the ancient cities of the Middle East, especially Nineveh. Since then the story has been translated into many languages; several English translations have been published. Some of these translations of the epic maintain epic poetic form, others are in prose, and there are a number of versions for children. At the moment no complete version exists in Afrikaans. This thesis presents a translation of parts from Geraldine McCaughrean's English children's version, which was published in 2002. McCaughrean adapts the structure of the standard version, clearly a strategy to make her text exciting for modern readers. The theoretical insights of André Lefevere and Lawrence Venuti form the paradigm for the translation process. Lefevere sees translation as one of a number of rewriting techniques. The detail of such a rewriting is determined by the poetics of the target culture, the patronage which enables such a translation to exist, and the ideological framework within which the rewriting develops. Venuti distinguishes between two translational approaches: a domesticating translation adapts the translation to the target culture and creates the impression with readers that they are reading an original text; foreignising translation makes the readers aware that they are reading a text from another culture. The opportunities and limitations of children's literature and translation for children are explored. Specific attention is given to taboo topics, as a number of these appears in the Gilgamesh Epic. The writers of the children's versions have solved these problems in different ingenious ways. Annotations shed light on the translational challenges and the decisions of the translator. Finally the whole project is evaluated and suggestions for further research are made.

Full textThe first part of this piece of work consists of a study of the epic genre as developed by Ovid in Metamorphoses, by means of a detailed examination of the proem and other programmatic passages, simultaneously to an appreciation of the poetic models who contributed to form his particular variant of epos, namely Hesiod, the alexandrian poets, together with his Latin predecessors, particularly Aenius, Lucretius and Virgil. The second part consists of the study and analysis of the myth of Ceix in book 11, concerning narrative disposition and its marked alusiveness to preceding poems, notably in relation to the pietas / pax x impietas / ferocia conflict which underlies the story. Finally, there is a prose translation of the whole myth presented line by line, followed by a verse translation of the main part of the myth.

A análise é feita a partir do código Java compilado (bytecode Java).

Full textAt the LHC, strong interaction is studied by doing collisions of high energy particles. In the case of nucleus-nucleus collision (lead at the LHC), a new state of matter, called Quarks Gluons Plasma (QGP), is created. The study of this QGP is currently a lively research field. Hard probes, like heavy quarks and prompt photons, are produced during early times of collisions done at the LHC. This is why they are ideal probes for the study of the QGP. They will go through and interact with the medium produced by the collision. A comparison with a case without QGP (proton-proton- collision) will allow us to see how hard probes properties are modified by themedium. Then, medium properties like temperature and density can be extracted. This study requires a good understanding of hard probes production in proton-proton collisions. The aim of my thesis is the implementation of heavy quarks and prompt photons in the event generator EPOS (computer code for colliders), for p-p collisions. Our final aim is the study of the QGP in Pb-Pb collisions
