Abstract:
Nonlinear thin film rupture has been analyzed by investigating the stability of tear films to finite amplitude disturbances. The dynamics of the liquid film is formulated using the Navier–Stokes equations, including a body force term due to van der Waals attractions. The governing equation was solved by the finite difference method as part of an initial value problem for spatial periodic boundary conditions. The rupture of the tear film covering the cornea and the formation of dry spots is an important phenomenon in various pathological states associated with a dry eye. [S0148-0731(00)00605-1]

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanisms of degradation of aluminum metallization under conditions of thermal shock caused by rectangular current pulses (amplitude j < 8 × 1010 A/m2, duration t < 800 μs). Design/methodology/approach The results were obtained using oscillography and optical microscopy and through the construction of an empirical model of the thermal degradation of metallization systems. Findings Initially, for the authors’ studies, they deduced an equation that associated the depth of melting with the parameters of a current pulse. Research limit

We theoretically considered two-dimensional flow in a vertically aligned thick molten liquid film to investigate the competition between cooling and gravity-driven draining, which is relevant in the formation of metallic foams. Molten liquid in films cools as it drains, losing its heat to the surrounding colder air and substrate. We extended our previous model to include non-isothermal effects, resulting in coupled non-linear evolution equations for the film’s thickness, extensional flow speed and temperature. The coupling between the flow and cooling effect was via a constitutive relationship

A ferrocolloid is a suspension of nanometer-sized ferromagnetic particles (magnetite) in a carrier liquid (kerosene). A unique feature of a ferrocolloid is the fact that layers consisting of densely packed particles are formed near the electrode surface under the influence of an external electric field. Each layer is a liquid membrane, and its formation significantly affects the various properties of the system. For example, the development of a unique phenomenon in a ferrocolloid is self-organization (self-oscillations and autowaves). The applied external periodic force leads to a change (cap

Summary Optimization of foam treatments requires modeling or simulation of the process using a foam model that is capable of reproducing the critical properties of foam. In this work we present a simple model that is based on the relative permeability concept, and is well suited for simulation of foam processes with conventional or slightly modified numerical simulators. The model can unify understanding of a number of phenomena that characterizes foam flow. The validity of the model is substantiated by experimental data. Capillary forces derived from axisymmetric disturbances in the circumferential curvatures of the two interfaces destabilize cylindrical base states of compound threads and jets (with inner and outer radii R1 and aR1 respectively). The capillary instability causes breakup into drops; the presence of the annular phase allows both the annular- and core-phase properties to influence the drop size. Of technological interest is breakup where the core snaps first, and then the annulus. This resu

The gas film may survive the impact on the gas-liquid interface and act as the gas film of an antibubble. We consider a long-wave evolution equation that governs a draining film on a heated plate and hence is capable of describing both surface-wave and thermocapillary instabilities. When the flow and heat transfer rates are moderate, we show, via weakly nonlinear analysis of a truncated system and numerical simulation of the full nonlinear evolution equation, that coupled temporal instabilities can create surface deformations that lead to an array of rivulets aligned with the flow. This work thus demonstrates a mechanism of rivulet formation based solely on instability phenomena.

Thin viscous liquid films sitting on a solid substrate support nonlinear capillary waves, driven by surface shear stresses at a liquid–gas interface. When surface tension is spatially dependent other mechanisms, such as the thermocapillary effect, influence the dynamics of thin films. In this article we show that in liquids with broken time-reversal symmetry the character of the aforementioned waves and of the thermocapillary effect are significantly modified due to the presence of odd or Hall viscosity in the liquid. This is because odd viscosity gives rise to new terms in the pressure gradie
