Full textThis study has been conducted in order to increase knowledge about psychosocial development in children with autism diagnosis in relationship to activities with horses. The study is qualitative, based on five interviews with parents and includes field observations. The interviews have been processed according to inductive thematic analysis and are reported under three themes related to the childrens interaction with their environment. The result shows that the activity with horses has positive impact on the children's desire and ability to interact and communicate with the outside world. The skills manifests in interaction with children as well as with adults, both within the family and in other settings. The result of the study indicates conformity with previous research, and the event's multi-facetted content and effects are made visible. Surprising results are experiences of the children's different relationship and communication with horses, and observations of the immediate impact on the children when riding. Research from a family perspective highligtening the voice of the child is proposed, as well as further research on physiological effects of horseback riding in reltionship to social interacting.

Full textDeveloping research, anecdotal evidence and a growing focus on non-pharmacological interventions for veterans with post-traumatic stress support the use equine-therapy as a therapeutic outlet; however, programmatic factors that contribute to veteran’s desire to attend such programs are under-investigated. Furthermore, evaluative processes in equine therapy for this particular population are scare and vary greatly from program to program. The use of the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) tool when applied to social services yields direct, applicable feedback of program success and relevancy. In this study, interviews with the selected population informed the evaluation tool used to assess the importance, and subsequent performance, of various program factors in a national military-specific equine therapy program. Results of this study provided insight into key factors being sought after in similar equine therapy programs to inform the development and maintenance of programs serving the veteran population. The application of the IPA, a consumer feedback tool typically reserved for market research, to the health and human services sector provided a new pathway for quality assurance and program analysis for the equine therapy field.

Full textHurwitz, Jaqueline. "Exploring equine assisted psychotherapy for adolescents in residential care." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/85745.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The background experiences of adolescents removed from their families and placed in residential care are often characterised by trauma, abuse and neglect, resulting in significant psychological and developmental implications. However, as a result of their negative past experiences, many of these individuals view other people, including helping professionals, with mistrust or apprehension, influencing their openness to and thus the effectiveness of traditional psychotherapeutic interventions. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is explored within this study as an alternative non-invasive approach which aims to meet the emotional and developmental needs of vulnerable and difficult-to-reach adolescents. Innate characteristics of horses seem to encourage individuals to engage fully in the psychotherapeutic process making them well-suited to the role of co-therapist within the therapeutic team. This study aimed to explore the experiences of adolescents living within residential care who had participated in an EAP program for approximately eight months, and the affects their participation had within their lives. A qualitative study founded within the interpretive paradigm was used to gain insight into the research questions. Participants were selected using purposive and convenient sampling techniques. Following this, data was obtained through semi-structured interviews, the researcher’s reflective journal, and a focus group discussion. Inductive data segmentation and reassembling techniques were utilised to analyse the data. The findings were integrated and presented as a case study. The research findings indicated that the participants experienced various learning and development opportunities through their participation in EAP. They were able to establish connections which led to improved psychological, social, and physical well-being. The implicit integration of the Circle of Courage principles of mastery, belonging, generosity and independence within the EAP process was also explored and documented for the first time within this text. The findings were related to resilience theory in order to depict EAP as a psychotherapeutic approach which serves to foster resilience for vulnerable adolescents, namely those placed within residential care in this study.
The research findings indicated that the participants experienced various learning and development opportunities through their participation in EAP.

Full textIn the effort to take responsibly and effect positive change in the lives of our children, we must begin by identifying and applying the most effective methods to help them overcome obstacles to mental and emotional well-being. In conjunction with a limited number of quantitative studies, anecdotal evidence suggests that animal-assisted therapies and activities promote positive outcomes for children who have been physically abused and who have developed behavioral and emotional disorders. Chapter one will address the current state of the research on the impact of physical abuse on children's physical, social and emotional beings. Understanding what we know about what abused children must cope with, chapter two will examine service provision under the current system known as the continuum of care. Finally, chapter three will introduce animal assisted therapy and illustrate the ways in which it can strengthen and support services that are already in place for children who are struggling with behavioral and emotional disorders that result from physical abuse. Before the argument for including animal assisted programs as a supplement to services currently provided can be made, this therapeutic approach deserves to be appropriately standardized and evaluated. Allocating more resources to research that will develop the breath and depth of knowledge in the field of animal assisted therapy is a necessary step in improving the quality of care

Full textThis bachelor thesis analyses the use of horse-assisted therapy amongst mental health practitioners within multiple sectors. The aim was to establish whether a change could be detected in participants. Adopting a qualitative approach the research was mainly conducted through four semi-structured interviews with equine-assisted therapy practitioners. The results show that the practitioners believe the horses improve the interactions between the practitioners and participants. The practitioners believe this improvement is due to the non-verbal participation of the horse in interface with the practitioner and participant and that the horses increase the participants’ trust in others as well as their confidence when establishing relationships with others. The participants gained an opportunity to create meaning within their lives through everyday routines, structures and feel a sense of context. Some of the practitioners struggled to identify what causes the change but recognised a positive change in the majority of participants.

The dog is man's best friend, but it is only recently that the dog's health benefits have begun to be explored. Internationally the dog is used in health care in a different extent than in Sweden. Health effects in form of shorter length of stay, faster rehabilitation and better self-care has been demonstrated. The purpose of literature study was to describe the patients' experiences of the dog's presence in healthcare. The study was a literature review of 15 scientific articles. The results showed that dogs can be used as a complementary treatment to conventional treatment or non-pharmaceutical treatment in the care process. The use of dogs in health care shows positive social ability, increased physical activity and psychological improvement for the patient. Although changes in patients with reduced activity was noticeable with increased motivation and initiative. The dog gives a distracting effect which put away thoughts on aches and problems in daily life, the dog also gives protection and companionship. Given the importance of activating old and passive patients should be acknowledged. More research is needed on the effects from the dog from both from the patient, personal and social perspective. Knowledge of the subject provides an opportunity for the nurse to use this resource in the care of the patient.

Full textHistorically, the horse has in many ways been important to human beings. Today, Equine Assisted Therapy is a form of treatment in which the horse is used as a tool from the treatment of the client. Supported Equine therapy has a therapeutic purpose and may vary depending on the patient's needs and the professionals work competence. Various studies show that animals have a positive impact on people. The aim of our study was to explore how Equine Assisted Therapy is used within the practical fields of social work in Sweden. We wanted to illustrate how professionals in different social work settings utilize this form of treatment. Based on our purpose we have chosen to use a qualitative approach in which we interviewed five professionals who work with Equine Assisted Therapy as treatment method in various activities. In our results, we present the strengths and weaknesses according to the professionals; which approach they consider relevant and how a treatment session might look like.

Full textBackground:The bond between humans and dogs has shown to be important. Early studies have shown that they have health-promoting benefits on humans. The nurse’s role includes promoting health and if dogs can do so then that would suggest that we should use them in clinical care. Aim: The aim of this literature review is to investigate how dogs can be used in clinical care and what effects they have on patients. Method: This study was designed as a literature review. The authors searched for scientific articles which addressed the aim of the study, by using the databases Cinahl COMPLETE and PubMed. The contents of the articles were then analysed by reading them both individually and jointly and themes and subthemes were identified. Results: The analysis regarding the use of dogs in clinical care resulted in two themes: Activity and Presence. The theme Activity describes how dogs were used to carry out activities that were specifically designed for a particular purpose. The theme Presence describes how dogs have been used as company, where the activities were not particularly structured but the dogs had a positive impact just by being present. The analysis regarding the effect dogs in clinical care have on patients resulted in three themes: Physical health, Psychological health and Participation. These describe the effects that the dogs have had on patients. These were exclusively positive. Discussion: The strengths and weaknesses of the method of this review are discussed in the section Method discussion. In the section Results discussion, the results are discussed. They have been primarily positive to the use of dogs in clinical care; however, in some cases the results were faint.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As a grade R teacher in South Africa, the researcher was disturbed by the extent of aggressive behaviour amongst children (aged 4 years to 6 years). Other teachers involved with the same class were of the opinion that the aggressive behaviour had a detrimental effect on their instructional time and motivation. Schools, teachers and other support personnel of staff have developed many cognitive and social support programmes to encourage positive behaviour, including reducing aggressiveness. Some programmes are in individual format and others in group format. However, the problem with these types of support programmes is that they are hard to come by due to cost and lack of knowledge among personnel. A child's full development is influenced negatively when in a negative atmosphere or situation (which includes abuse, aggression or discouragement). During 2011, the researcher took her dog to visit her class informally. It started when the class was having a discussion on pets and the researcher wanted to show the class how to groom and take care of a pet dog. The school’s staff and the researcher noticed a calmer and friendlier atmosphere amongst the children after the visits. This positive experience led to reading related literature and the researcher found substantial recent literature that increased her interest in the subject. The literature review suggested that the positive effects of animals in classrooms and on children should be explored and shared with teachers and schools, hence this study. The question arose whether this method could possibly provide the type of support South African children need to become caring, empathic and understanding of the world around them and each other. This research study was undertaken to explore the influence of the visits of a dog on the learners’ aggressive behaviour and teachers' opinions, which were of great value. This qualitative study took place within an interpretive paradigm. A case study design was used, as the focus was on an in-depth explanation of how a dog influenced the aggressive behaviour in the grade R class as a single bounded system. The study took place over a period of eight successive weeks. The data collection methods employed were questionnaires to gather biographical data, individual semi-structured interviews and observation during free play. Data were analysed by means of content analysis. Research findings indicated a positive influence on the learners' aggressive behaviour after eight weeks of the P.A.T. (Pet Assisted Therapy) dog visits. Positive behaviour in general was also witnessed and, most importantly, the participating teachers were of the opinion that the class was easier to manage and more time could be spent on instruction. The participating teachers provided different perspectives as they were involved in the class in different ways. However, the conclusion was that the positive influence of PAA on the learners' aggressive behaviour was mainly due to how some individual learners were influenced, which changed the interaction among all the learners. It is recommended that further studies be done on the time available to teachers to address aggressive behaviour to achieve a long-term result compared to just solving the problem at the occurrence of aggressive behaviour, and how PAA influences the learners in their other microsystems as well.
Kwalitatiewe navorsingsmetodologie is gebruik.

This study emanates from the fact that trauma is an increasing reality in our society and it has a particular focus on social workers who work with clientele that have been exposed to and who have suffered trauma. As a result and by using clinical judgment of social workers working in such environments, the social workers may have developed Secondary Traumatic Stress (S.T.S.) symptoms. Psychosocial support functions as a preventative and supportive tool for social workers and emotion-focussed programmes have beneficial effects on the psychosocial wellbeing of social workers by reducing their distress. This study will be exploring a psychosocial intervention called Equine Assisted Therapy (E.A.T.), which makes use of horses in a therapeutic model and enables clients to interact with horses on an emotional and metaphorical level that empowers clients to experience emotional and behavioural change and growth. The significance of this study is to enable the researcher to explore E.A.T. as a possible psychosocial intervention that can provide support for social workers and health care professionals alike who work in environments where they are exposed to high levels of trauma. The researcher made use of a qualitative paradigm that was explorative in nature to gain perspective of the chosen topic. The population for the study comprised of 16 social workers that work in the family violence, child welfare and sexual assault field and who attended a once-off Equine Assisted Therapy (E.A.T.) session to expose them to the therapy model being explored. The participants then volunteered for a semi-structured interview with the researcher which was digitally recorded, thereby allowing the researcher to collect the data and then analyse the data.
