Full textThe present study describes the results of a 2 week perturbation experiment where speakers'' vocal tract shape was modified due to the presence of an artificial palate. The aim of the work is to investigate whether speakers adapt towards acoustic or articulatory targets. Speakers were recorded regularly over the adaptation time via electromagnetic articulography and acoustics. Immediately after perturbation onset speakers'' auditory feedback was masked with white noise in order to investigate speakers'' compensatory behaviour when auditory feedback was absent. The results of acoustic measurements show that in vowel production speakers compensate very soon. The compensation in fricatives takes longer and is in some cases not completed within the two weeks. Within a session and for each speaker the sounds can be distinguished solely by acoustic parameters. The difference between the session when no auditory feedback was available and the session when auditory feedback was available was greater for vowels with less palatal contact than for vowels with much palatal contact. In consonant production auditory feedback is primarily used in order to adapt sibilant productions. In general, adaptation tries to keep or enlarge the articulatory and acoustic space between the sounds. Over sessions speakers show motor equivalent strategies (lip protrusion vs. tongue back raising) in the production of /u/. Measurements of tangential jerk suggest that after perturbation onset there is an increase in articulatory effort which is followed by a decrease towards the end of the adaptation time. The compensatory abilities of speakers when no auditory feedback is available suggest that speakers dispose of an articulatory representation. The fact that motor equivalent strategies are used by the speakers, however, supports acoustic representations of speech. It is therefore concluded that articulatory representations belong to the speech production tasks. However, since they are modified as soon as the acoustic output is not the desired one any more, they rather function in the domain of movement organisation and the acoustic representations dominate.

Full textWord learning accompanies our everyday life from infancy to advanced age. Infants have to learn the native language(s) but also during adulthood word learning can take place, for example if we learn a new foreign language. Sometimes people are confronted with a situation in which they have to re-learn a language because of a brain lesion. How does the brain master these challenging word learning settings? To assess neuroplasticity of word learning several neuroscientific methods (electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, voxel-based lesion-behavior/EEG mapping), partially in combination, were used in infants, children, and adults as well as in patients suffering from a brain lesion compared to matched elderly controls. In 5 experiments neuronal processing of pseudowords corresponding to native and non-native phonotactic rules (i.e., the combination of different phonemes) was investigated under different learning conditions in monolingual participants. Healthy adults but also 6-month-old infants and elderly subjects and patients were able to differentiate these rules. Involved brain areas included a left-hemispheric network of fronto-temporal regions. When processing universal linguistic features, however, more parietal regions were involved. While adults revealed a clear left-dominant network, 6-month-olds still recruited bilateral brain areas. Differential language trainings (semantic or passive listening trainings) over three consecutive days also modulated brain activation in both infants and adults suggesting a high flexibility for learning native and non-native linguistic regularities. In a 6th experiment, bilingual 5-year-old children learned novel adjectives by means of pragmatic cues and revealed more efficient neuronal mechanisms compared to monolingual children. Findings underline the importance of multi-methodological approaches to get clearer insights into the complex machinery of neuroplasticity.

Full textThis study analyses the underlying question if it is possible to distinguish apraxia of speech (SAX) and phonemic aphasia (APH) by phonetic distortions and phonological paraphasia of monophthongs and diphthongs. Phonetic measurements like the duration of vowels and words, the Voice Onset Time of voiceless plosives in the onset of syllables and the first and second formant will be analyzed as well. Three groups of four subjects are studied: Group SAX (no/mild aphasia), group APH (without apraxia of speech), group NOM (without any speech disorder). A repetition task comprising 104 German mostly monomorphemic, monosyllabic nouns, 52 simple (CVC) and 52 complex (CCVC and CVCC) syllables, is performed. Each of the vowels is tested in eight mostly different words. The reactions will be segmented, phonetically measured, and analyzed by ear with the help of the program “Praat” (Version 5.2.22, Boersma & Weenink, 1992–2011). The statistical analysis is conducted with R (The R Foundation), within the “R-Studio” software suite (Version 0.98.1103, 2009–2014). The results show some indications of failures and pathological mechanisms of apraxia of speech. Group SAX produces significantly more phonetic distorted monophthongs and diphthongs and significantly longer word durations than group APH. Some vowels are just partly distorted, for example, in form of atypical initial aspirated or rounded monophthongs. Also the formants show greater variability in group SAX than in groups APH and NOM. The results suggest a timing deficit during planning and control of speech movements in apraxia of speech.

However, where all of the other requirements of handling are satisfied (ie the only one missing is that the goods are stolen), the defendant may be convicted of attempted handling under s 1 of the Criminal Attempts Act 1981 (cf R v Shivpuri [1987] AC 1), or the handling may amount to a fresh appropriation (and so theft) of the goods. See also Walters v Lunt [1951] 2 All ER 645, where the defendants were charged (under legislation which preceded the Theft Act 1968) with receiving stolen goods. The goods in question had been taken by a child aged seven, ie below the age of criminal responsibility. The Divisional Court held that since the person who took the goods could not be guilty of theft, the goods were not stolen goods. It followed that the defendants could not be guilty of receiving stolen goods. Lord Goddard CJ pointed out, however, that the defendants, by taking possession of the goods and keeping the goods (and thereby appropriating them), could have been charged instead with theft of those goods. AG’s Ref (No 4 of 1979) (1980) 71 Cr App R 341 The defendant had received a cheque for £288.53 from a fellow employee. The defendant’s fellow employee (that is, the thief) had obtained cheques (totalling over £800) by deception from her employer. The cheques had been paid into her bank account, along with payments from legitimate sources. The trial judge ruled that as the bank account on which the cheque for £288.53 had been drawn had received credits from a variety of sources, some legitimate and some illegitimate, it was impossible for the prosecution to prove that the payment made to the defendant was in law stolen goods. The following point of law was referred to the Court of Appeal:." In Sourcebook Criminal Law, 1147–52. Routledge-Cavendish, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.4324/9781843143093-216.
