Abstract:
The title compounds were prepared by sintering of the stoichiometric amounts of the oxides of the constituent elements at 820 °C in air. X-ray powder diffraction examinations revealed that the polar R3c phase in the Bi1-xRxFeO3 systems with R = Er, Tm and Yb do not exceed 7, 4 and 3 mol.% of rare earth, respectively. Partial substitution of the Bi sites by Er and Tm in BiFeO3 reduces the temperature of the ferroelectric phase transition R3c–Pbnm on 30–60 K.

Abstract:
1008 Background: Most TNBC trials focusing on biology of the basal-like subtype (BLBC) allow borderline (1-10% staining) estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PgR) expression by immunohistochemistry (IHC); however the optimal ER and PgR cut points to enrich for non-luminal subtypes has not been studied. In this study,we compared quantitative ER/PgR status with gene expression-based intrinsic subtype in order to determine if borderline cases should be included in TNBC trials. Methods: ER, PgR, and HER2 status was determined by central review of tumors collected from three phase III randomized trials: GEICAM 9906 (n=820), NCIC CTG MA.5 (n=476) and MA.12 (n=398). PAM50 intrinsic subtyping (BLBC, HER2-enriched, Luminal A, Luminal B and Normal-like) was performed using the qRT-PCR-based assay. Quantitative ER/PgR expression by IHC and subtype was tested using ANOVA and Fisher’s exact test. Results: Of 1,694 tumors, 15% were BLBC, 21% HER2-Enriched, 33% Luminal A, 25% Luminal B and 4% Normal-like. BLBC subtypes were significantly associated with low expression of ER and PgR (median = 0.05%) compared to other subtypes (p < 0.001). The vast majority of BLBC (96%) did not express any ER or PgR protein by IHC. BLBC represented 73% of TNBC (borderline cases not included) and significantly more than the additional TNBC with borderline ER/PgR (p < 0.001). Within borderline ER/PgR and HER2-negative cases only, 17% were BLBC and 46% were luminal subtypes (Table). Conclusions: BLBC rarely express ER or PgR by IHC. The majority of borderline TNBC (1-10% ER/PgR) are not BLBC; half of them are categorized as luminal categories that may be endocrine sensitive. TNBC trials seeking to target BLBC tumor biology should use the ASCO/CAP guidelines of 0% as the cutoffs for ER and PgR negativity. [Table: see text]

Abstract:
A wet non-conventional method for preparing aluminophosphate glasses is presented. Aluminophosphate glasses belonging to the oxide system Li2O-BaO-Al2O3-La2O3-P2O5, doped with rare-earth ions (Pr3+, Er3+, Gd3+, and Yb3+) were obtained. The influence of the doping ions on the optical properties of the phosphate glasses has been investigated in relation with micro-structural and local electronic phenomena The optical behavior of Li2O-BaO-Al2O3-La2O3-P2O5 glasses doped with 3% mol. rare-earth ions has been studied by ultra-violet-visible-near-infra-red (UV-VISNIR) spectroscopy. The transmission spectra revealed electronic transitions between 4f and 6s inner orbital of the rare-earth ions. Structural information via optical phonons was provided by infra-red (IR) absorption spectra in the range 400-4000 cm-1. IR optical phonons are characteristic for the vitreous phosphate network, showing out the glass network-forming role of P2O5. The absorption spectra present the main PO2 and P-O-P symmetrical stretch modes besides P-O-P bend mode, P-OH, P=O, PO3 2-, asymmetrical and symmetrical vibration modes. Fluorescence spectra of the rareearth- doped aluminophosphate glasses, in the visible range, were obtained by laser excitation at 514.5 nm. The fluorescence signals revealed specific electronic transitions, which provide visible and near-infra-red emission. Glasses containing rare-earth ions exhibit luminescence at the following wavelengths: Pr3+ ions at 820 nm and 880 nm, Er3+ ions at 520 nm, 550 nm and 560 nm, Gd3+ ions at 530 nm, 540 nm, 550 nm 820 and 880 nm, Yb3+ions at 530 nm, 540 nm, 550 nm and 980 nm.

Abstract:
Purpose Identification of single-gene biomarkers that are prognostic of outcome can shed new insights on the molecular mechanisms that drive breast cancer and other cancers. Methods Exploratory analysis of 20,464 single-gene messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in the Molecular Taxonomy of Breast Cancer International Consortium (METABRIC) discovery cohort indicates that low expression of FGD3 mRNA is prognostic for poor outcome. Prognostic significance of faciogenital dysplasia 3 (FGD3), SUSD3, and other single-gene proliferation markers was evaluated in breast cancer and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cohorts. Results A meta-analysis of Cox regression of FGD3 mRNA as a continuous variable for overall survival of estrogen receptor (ER)–positive samples in METABRIC discovery, METABRIC validation, TCGA breast cancer, and Combination Chemotherapy in Treating Women With Breast Cancer (E2197) cohorts resulted in a combined hazard ratio (HR) of 0.69 (95% CI, 0.63 to 0.75), indicating better outcome with high expression. In the ER-negative samples, the combined meta-analysis HR was 0.72 (95% CI, 0.63 to 0.82), suggesting that FGD3 is prognostic regardless of ER status. The potential of FGD3 as a biomarker for freedom from recurrence was evaluated in the Breast International Group 1-98 (BIG 1-98; Letrozole or Tamoxifen in Treating Postmenopausal Women With Breast Cancer) study (HR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.76 to 0.93) for breast cancer–free interval. In the Hungarian Academy of Science (HAS) breast cancer cohort, splitting on the median had an HR of 0.49 (95% CI, 0.42 to 0.58) for recurrence-free survival. A comparison of the Stouffer P value in five ER-positive cohorts showed that FGD3 ( P = 3.8E-14) outperformed MKI67 ( P = 1.06E-8) and AURKA ( P = 2.61E-5). A comparison of the Stouffer P value in four ER-negative cohorts showed that FGD3 ( P = 3.88E-5) outperformed MKI67 ( P = .477) and AURKA ( P = .820). Conclusion FGD3 was previously shown to inhibit cell migration. FGD3 mRNA is regulated by ESR1 and is associated with favorable outcome in six distinct breast cancer cohorts and four TCGA cancer cohorts. This suggests that FGD3 is an important clinical biomarker.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Breast cancer (BC) and thyroid disease are well-recognized comorbidities. Hyperthyroidism and supraphysiologic thyroid hormone (TH) have been shown to promote BC incidence. We recently reported that thyroid hormone replacement therapy (THRT) was significantly and independently associated with shortened disease-free and overall survival, as well as endocrine resistance only in patients with steroid receptor-positive (SR+) BC (1). TH markedly upregulated estrogen and cell cycle signaling in vivo and in vitro and promoted dedifferentiation to basaloid and pre-stem phenotypes. Metformin (Met) attenuated this shift. Mechanisms of TH-mediated endocrine therapy resistance in ER+ BC are the focus of this report. Design: Two clinical cohorts of early-stage lymph node-negative (LN-) SR+ BC patients (n=820 and n=160) were used to determine the effect of THRT on overall survival using Kaplan-Meier methods. Bi-directional cross-talk between TH and E2 was tested using different BC cell lines, ER+ PDX in vivo models, in vitro methods, and publically available in silico data for modeling. Results: Our results show that E2+TH increases cell proliferation, enhances cell cycle, and hormone-associated oncogenic signaling in SR+/ER+ BC. Given that high expression of THRA is associated with poor prognosis in SR+ BC, knockdown of THRA and ESR1 reduced cell proliferation in ER+ BC cells. ER+ PDX tumors were implanted into NSG mice containing E2 pellet and subsequently treated with TH, Tamoxifen (Tam), Fulvestrant (ICI) or Met. Our data show that TH-mediated endocrine resistance only in the E2+TH+Tam treated tumors (P<0.0001 vs E2+Tam alone). Both ICI and Met provided significant attenuation of tumor growth in vivo. RNAseq analysis of E2+TH+Tam tumors show an increase in pro-oncogenic signaling (Wnt/Fizzled, MMPs, and TCL/LEFT). Our data suggest that the use of Tam did not dampen tumor growth whereas a full ER-antagonist (ICI) or Met attenuated E2-TH mediated cross-talk and tumor growth. Conclusions: These findings suggest that TH+Tam may enhance oncogenic signaling and is associated with a significantly increase in mortality risk in ER+/SR+ BC tumors. Exogenous TH adversely affects SR+ BC and not SR- BC. Understanding the mechanism of cross-talk between TH and E2 allows us to define novel therapeutic strategies that will facilitate rapid clinical application for ER+ BC patients currently taking THRT and anti-estrogen treatments. Abstract:
621 Background: Serological tumor markers: Cancer Antigen 15–3 (CA 15–3), Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA), have been investigated as useful markers for monitoring of response to treatment and for predicting outcome in breast cancer patients. Methods: A total of 820 breast cancer patients, treated over the period April 1999 through December 2003, had preoperative CA15–3 and CEA concentrations measured. The stage of the primary tumor ranged from 0 to IV. The median age of the patients was 47years (range 20–88 years old). The concentration of markers was investigated with regard to clinico-pathological parameters and patients outcome by both univariate and multivariate analysis. We determined the range of normality by the mean + 2 standard deviations of the markers distribution in populations of healthy females, who took an annual health screening program. Survival curves for disease free survival and death from disease were estimated by the method of Kaplan-Meier method and differences between groups in survival were tested using the log-rank test. All statistical analyses were carried out using SPSS statistics software (ver 10.5). Results: Among 820 patients, elevated preoperative level of CA15–3 and CEA was identified in 100 (12.2%) and 83 (10.1%) patients, respectively. Tumor size (>5cm), lymph node metastases (≥4), advanced stage (stage III and IV) were associated with significantly higher level of both preoperative CA15–3 and CEA. Elevated preoperative values of CA15–3 and CEA were associated with poor disease free survival (DFS, p=0.0019, p=0.0001, respectively) and distant relapse-free survival (DRFS, p=0.011, p=0.0034), but the level was marginal for overall survival (OS, p=0.0848, p=0.0895). By Cox’s multivariate analysis, younger age (<35 years), larger tumor size(>2cm), axillary node metastases, negative ER expression, elevated preoperative values of CA15–3 and CEA were independent prognostic factors for DFS and DRFS. Conclusions: High level of preoperative CA 15–3 and CEA might reflect a tumor burden, and is associated with advanced disease condition and disease-free survival. Measuring preoperative levels of CA 15–3 and CEA might be helpful for predicting the outcome and for planning the adjuvant therapy in breast cancer patients. Abstract:
Welding technology is used because besides being easy to use, it can also reduce costs so it is cheaper. Especially for welding repair. From the welding repair the extent to which the strength of GMAW welds can repair components from the molded plastic mold room made of AISI 420 stainless steel. Repair of the print room components using deposit welding is tested using tensile strength and hardness as realization of resistance when holding the rate of liquid plastic entering the print room by 25 to 40 MPa, depending on the plastic viscosity, the precision of the mold and the filling level of the print room. Deposition welding method as a welding repair can affect a procedure to be able to produce a component that is safe and capable of being used in accordance with the provisions. The welding process used is reverse polarity GMAW DC with 125 A current and ER 70 S welding wire diameter 1.2 mm. Test material AISI 420. Tests carried out were tensile test, impact test and hardness test in weld metal, HAZ and base metal. From the Charpy impact test and tensile test obtained the value of welding strength which is close to the strength of the complete object, which is equal to 65%. The energy absorbed by the impact test object with GMAW welding is 5.4 Joule while for the whole test object is 8.1 Joule. The welding tensile strength is 520 MPa compared to the tensile tensile strength of 820 MPa.

Brunner, Jana. "Acoustic compensation and articulo-motor reorganisation in perturbed speech." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät II, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/15891.

Abstract:
The present study describes the results of a 2 week perturbation experiment where speakers'' vocal tract shape was modified due to the presence of an artificial palate. The aim of the work is to investigate whether speakers adapt towards acoustic or articulatory targets. Speakers were recorded regularly over the adaptation time via electromagnetic articulography and acoustics. Immediately after perturbation onset speakers'' auditory feedback was masked with white noise in order to investigate speakers'' compensatory behaviour when auditory feedback was absent. The results of acoustic measurements show that in vowel production speakers compensate very soon. The compensation in fricatives takes longer and is in some cases not completed within the two weeks. Within a session and for each speaker the sounds can be distinguished solely by acoustic parameters. The difference between the session when no auditory feedback was available and the session when auditory feedback was available was greater for vowels with less palatal contact than for vowels with much palatal contact. In consonant production auditory feedback is primarily used in order to adapt sibilant productions. In general, adaptation tries to keep or enlarge the articulatory and acoustic space between the sounds. Over sessions speakers show motor equivalent strategies (lip protrusion vs. tongue back raising) in the production of /u/. Measurements of tangential jerk suggest that after perturbation onset there is an increase in articulatory effort which is followed by a decrease towards the end of the adaptation time. The compensatory abilities of speakers when no auditory feedback is available suggest that speakers dispose of an articulatory representation. The fact that motor equivalent strategies are used by the speakers, however, supports acoustic representations of speech. It is therefore concluded that articulatory representations belong to the speech production tasks. However, since they are modified as soon as the acoustic output is not the desired one any more, they rather function in the domain of movement organisation and the acoustic representations dominate.

Rossi, Sonja. "Neuroplasticity of word learning." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/19420.

Full text
Abstract:
Word learning accompanies our everyday life from infancy to advanced age. Infants have to learn the native language(s) but also during adulthood word learning can take place, for example if we learn a new foreign language. Sometimes people are confronted with a situation in which they have to re-learn a language because of a brain lesion. How does the brain master these challenging word learning settings? To assess neuroplasticity of word learning several neuroscientific methods (electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, voxel-based lesion-behavior/EEG mapping), partially in combination, were used in infants, children, and adults as well as in patients suffering from a brain lesion compared to matched elderly controls. In 5 experiments neuronal processing of pseudowords corresponding to native and non-native phonotactic rules (i.e., the combination of different phonemes) was investigated under different learning conditions in monolingual participants. Healthy adults but also 6-month-old infants and elderly subjects and patients were able to differentiate these rules. Involved brain areas included a left-hemispheric network of fronto-temporal regions. When processing universal linguistic features, however, more parietal regions were involved. While adults revealed a clear left-dominant network, 6-month-olds still recruited bilateral brain areas. Differential language trainings (semantic or passive listening trainings) over three consecutive days also modulated brain activation in both infants and adults suggesting a high flexibility for learning native and non-native linguistic regularities. In a 6th experiment, bilingual 5-year-old children learned novel adjectives by means of pragmatic cues and revealed more efficient neuronal mechanisms compared to monolingual children. Findings underline the importance of multi-methodological approaches to get clearer insights into the complex machinery of neuroplasticity.

Augustin, Juliane Irina Antje.

Full text
Abstract:
This study analyses the underlying question if it is possible to distinguish apraxia of speech (SAX) and phonemic aphasia (APH) by phonetic distortions and phonological paraphasia of monophthongs and diphthongs. Phonetic measurements like the duration of vowels and words, the Voice Onset Time of voiceless plosives in the onset of syllables and the first and second formant will be analyzed as well. Three groups of four subjects are studied: Group SAX (no/mild aphasia), group APH (without apraxia of speech), group NOM (without any speech disorder). A repetition task comprising 104 German mostly monomorphemic, monosyllabic nouns, 52 simple (CVC) and 52 complex (CCVC and CVCC) syllables, is performed. Each of the vowels is tested in eight mostly different words. The reactions will be segmented, phonetically measured, and analyzed by ear with the help of the program “Praat” (Version 5.2.22, Boersma & Weenink, 1992–2011). The statistical analysis is conducted with R (The R Foundation), within the “R-Studio” software suite (Version 0.98.1103, 2009–2014). The results show some indications of failures and pathological mechanisms of apraxia of speech. Group SAX produces significantly more phonetic distorted monophthongs and diphthongs and significantly longer word durations than group APH. Some vowels are just partly distorted, for example, in form of atypical initial aspirated or rounded monophthongs. Also the formants show greater variability in group SAX than in groups APH and NOM. The results suggest a timing deficit during planning and control of speech movements in apraxia of speech.

Abstract:

"There can be no conviction under s 23 unless the prosecution can prove that the goods have been stolen. However, where all of the other requirements of handling are satisfied (ie the only one missing is that the goods are stolen), the defendant may be convicted of attempted handling under s 1 of the Criminal Attempts Act 1981 (cf R v Shivpuri [1987] AC 1), or the handling may amount to a fresh appropriation (and so theft) of the goods. See also Walters v Lunt [1951] 2 All ER 645, where the defendants were charged (under legislation which preceded the Theft Act 1968) with receiving stolen goods. The goods in question had been taken by a child aged seven, ie below the age of criminal responsibility. The Divisional Court held that since the person who took the goods could not be guilty of theft, the goods were not stolen goods. It followed that the defendants could not be guilty of receiving stolen goods. Lord Goddard CJ pointed out, however, that the defendants, by taking possession of the goods and keeping the goods (and thereby appropriating them), could have been charged instead with theft of those goods. AG’s Ref (No 4 of 1979) (1980) 71 Cr App R 341 The defendant had received a cheque for £288.53 from a fellow employee. The defendant’s fellow employee (that is, the thief) had obtained cheques (totalling over £800) by deception from her employer. The cheques had been paid into her bank account, along with payments from legitimate sources. The trial judge ruled that as the bank account on which the cheque for £288.53 had been drawn had received credits from a variety of sources, some legitimate and some illegitimate, it was impossible for the prosecution to prove that the payment made to the defendant was in law stolen goods. The following point of law was referred to the Court of Appeal:." In Sourcebook Criminal Law, 1147–52. Routledge-Cavendish, 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.4324/9781843143093-216.

Abstract:
There has been a great deal of interest regarding the use of Er;Cr;YSGG laser heating to disinfect human root canal, prior to a root canal procedure. Current disinfection procedures rely on irrigant solutions, such as sodium hypochlorite, which are applied to the canal prior to filling. However, prior experimentation has shown that bacteria are capable of penetrating into the dentin tubules as far as 800 μm, measured laterally from the root canal surface [Haapasalo and Orstavik 1987; Kakoli et al., 2009]. Further studies have proven that irrigants are incapable of destroying bacteria within deep dentin tubules, despite their ability to kill approximately 98% of the bacteria within the canal.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper, a detailed analysis of a recoil system of an artillery gun has been carried out with a view to minimize recoil length by absorbing the thrust produced due to firing and bring the gun barrel to its original position for the next round of fire. In many structural and defense applications, minimization of recoil length is one of the major concerns. A lot of research work has been carried out on the recoil mechanism of an artillery gun to improve its mobility in the hilly region. The effect of recoil mass displacement and high fire rate to improve the overall efficiency of an artillery gun has been studied. In this work, the performance of an artillery gun recoil system is studied by using a damper with electrorheological (ER) fluid. Experimental and numerical studies are carried out to evaluate the performance of the recoil system in terms of recoil length and total recoil time at different elevation angles of firing, ranging from 0 to 80°. It is seen that the use of developed ER damper in the gun recoil system improves its dynamic performance.
