Abstract:
In Athens in the late and early fifth century B.C. Eratosthenes, a well-known real Don Juan was killed. He sets his eyes on a young wife and seduces her, she is the wife of Euphiletus, a modest farmer, who spent a lot of time in countryside, away from his wife. Euphiletus, after the birth of his (first) son, places full faith in his wife. Having been informed about the affair, he catches her in adultery and, in front of some witnesses, kills Eratosthenes. The victim’s relatives hold a trial against the murderer, who before the Court gives a brilliant oration, written by Lysia one of the greatest orators of Athens.

Abstract:
A reiteration of the main details of the case may be helpful. Euphiletus killed Eratosthenes and was prosecuted for premeditated homicide by Eratosthenes' relatives. The present speech, our sole source of information concerning the case, was written for the defendant, partially or totally, by a professional speechwriter, presumably Lysias. In this speech Euphiletus admits killing Eratosthenes. He pleads, however, that, since he killed Eratosthenes after catching him in the act of adultery with his own wife, this was a case of justified homicide. At the same time, he denies a charge of the prosecution that he had killed Eratosthenes for reasons unrelated to the adultery. The speech was delivered before a court of fifty-one judges especially set up to judge such cases, as is attested elsewhere:T1Arist. Ath. Pol. 57.3: ‘If…a person admits that he has killed someone but claims that he had a right to do so, as, for instance, when he has surprised an adulterer in the act,… then the trial takes place in the Delphinion’ (cf. Dem. 23.74).

Abstract:
Abstract - Along with the development of communication technology human needs in the use of technology are increasing, especially in data storage. One way to improve security for data is by using cryptographic methods. RSA Algorithm (Rivest Shamir Adleman) is one method in the branch of cryptography, where RSA is a type of asymmetric cryptography that uses 2 keys, namely public and private keys. The problem of increasing the security of the public key and private key in RSA (Rivest Shamir Adlema) is that the Linear Congruential Generator (LCG) method is needed, LCG is used to generate a set of random numbers to n, where a set of random numbers will be taken that have a number value prime. One method for generating prime numbers is The Sieve Of Eratosthenes algorithm, The Sieve Of Eratosthenes algorithm is a classic algorithm for determining all prime numbers until the n-number is specified. The way the The Sieve Of Eratosthenes method works is to eliminate numbers that are not prime numbers, resulting in a collection of prime numbers. The prime number generated by the The Sieve Of Eratosthenes algorithm will be used for the public key and private key in the RSA criterion. Keywords - RSA, LCG, The Sieve of Eratosthenes.

This paper discusses the text of one of the fragments of Eratosthenes’ Erigone (fr. 22 Powell). Modern scholars have linked this one-line fragment with a Hellenistic theory that placed the origin of drama in the village of Icaria, in the Attic countryside. It is likely that the fragment did mention the word ‘billy-goat’ (τράγος), but there are no definite elements in favour of the hypothesis that Eratosthenes devised a theory on the origin of tragedy in Icaria.

Abstract:
Prime numbers are unique numbers. Prime numbers are numbers that only have a dividing factor consisting of numbers 1 and the number itself. The prime numbers from 1 to n that are relatively small can be generated manually, but a prime number generator algorithm is needed to generate prime numbers on a large scale. This study compares three prime number generator algorithms, namely: The Sieve of Eratosthenes, The Sieve of Atkins, and The Sieve of Sundaram. These three sieve algorithms have their own differences in generating prime numbers. The Sieve of Eratosthenes uses a simpler method by crossing multiples of prime numbers and marking them as non-prime numbers. The Sieve of Atkins uses several requirements for quadratic equations and modulus in determining prime numbers. The Sieve of Sundaram has an algorithm similar to The Sieve of Atkins, but there are requirements for linear equations to determine prime numbers. This study aims to see a comparison of these three algorithms in terms of accuracy and speed in generating prime numbers on a large scale. The results of this study indicate The Sieve of Eratosthenes, Atkins and Sundaram algorithms can generate large numbers of prime numbers with good accuracy, this was tested by the Fermat Primality Test Algorithm. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study, The Sieve of Eratosthenes have a faster time to generate prime numbers on a large scale than the other two algorithms.

Abstract:
Eratosthenes (circa 276 B.C.–194 B.C.) is considered a famous scientist of ancient Greece. He was a mathematician and geographer. Born in Cyrene, now Shahhat (Libya), he was appointed to teach the son of the Egyptian King Ptolemy III Euergetes. In 240 B.C., he became the third chief librarian the Great Library of Alexandria. Eratosthenes laid basics for mathematical geography. He was the first to calculate precisely in an original way the Earth meridian's length between Syene and Alexandria. For this purpose he used perpendicular projection of the sun rays during summer solstice (06.22) near the town Syene, now Aswan. His estimation of the length of the Earth's radius (6300 km) is close to present estimation (6371 km). He calculated that a year possesses 365.25 days. He also emphasized the significance of maps as the most important thing in geography. Eratosthenes was the first one to use the term “geographem” to describe the Earth. In this way he legitimized the term of geography. He also put into system geographical information from various sources in order to obtain a map of the world as precise as possible.

The Curie point depth (CPD) has been established to enhance the determination of magnetic sources average bottom depth. In this study, the CPD and heat flow regime of the Eratosthenes Seamount in the Eastern Mediterranean were investigated in order to understand the relationship between them. When CPD and heat flow values are determined together, we can understand the types and processes of geothermal resources formation. CPD and heat flow were obtained by applying the spectral analysis method to magnetic data, which was obtained from the Earth Magnetic Anomaly Grid (EMAG2). The result shows that CPD is approximately 22 km across the Seamount and is approximately 9 km in the northern part of the Eratosthenes Seamount near Cyprus. The heat flow regime manifested from CPD is about 95 mW/m2 in the investigated region, where the average thermal conductivity value (k) is considered to be 2.5 W/m °C. The heat flow regime is characterized by an increase in the northward part of the Eratosthenes Seamount and decreases towards the south.

The development and growth of electronic transmissions of information as well as the need for computertesting algorithms are partly responsible for the resurgence of activity in the area of prime numbers that we have witnessed in the last thirty years. In particular, the search for efficient algorithms to generate tables of prime numbers has produced excellent new results (Bengelloum 1986; Mairson 1977; Pritchard 1981). It has also produced noticeable improvements of such traditional algorithms as the sieve of Eratosthenes. This article presents recently developed generalizations to the sieve of Eratosthenes, showing the principles underlying these improvements, which increase its efficiency without changing too much of its simplicity.

Abstract:
Abstract. Statistics of anticyclonic eddy activity and eddy trajectories in the Levantine Basin over the 2000–2018 period are analyzed using the DYNED-Atlas database, which links automated mesoscale eddy detection by the Angular Momentum Eddy Detection and Tracking Algorithm (AMEDA) algorithm to in situ oceanographic observations. This easternmost region of the Mediterranean Sea, delimited by the Levantine coast and Cyprus, has a complex eddying activity, which has not yet been fully characterized. In this paper, we use Lagrangian tracking to investigate the eddy fluxes and interactions between different subregions in this area. The anticyclonic structure above the Eratosthenes Seamount is identified as hosting an anticyclone attractor, constituted by a succession of long-lived anticyclones. It has a larger radius and is more persistent (staying in the same position for up to 4 years with successive merging events) than other eddies in this region. Quantification of anticyclone flux shows that anticyclones that drift towards the Eratosthenes Seamount are mainly formed along the Israeli coast or in a neighboring area west of the seamount. The southeastern Levantine area is isolated, with no anticyclone transfers to or from the western part of the basin, defining the effective attraction basin for the Eratosthenes anticyclone attractor. Co-localized in situ profiles inside eddies provide quantitative information on their subsurface physical anomaly signature, whose intensity can vary greatly with respect to the dynamical surface signature intensity. Despite interannual variability, the so-called Eratosthenes anticyclone attractor stores a larger amount of heat and salt than neighboring anticyclones, in a deeper subsurface anomaly that usually extends down to 500 m. This suggests that this attractor could concentrate heat and salt from this subbasin, which will impact the properties of intermediate water masses created there.

Abstract The tenth prefatory letter of Pollux’ Onomasticon transmits two otherwise unattested pieces of information concerning the existence of an anonymous commentary on Xenophon and of a treatise by Eratosthenes of Cyrene entitled Σκευογραφικός. The corrupt state of the text in the manuscript tradition, which the standard edition by E. Bethe has not improved, has so far hindered the full understanding of this passage. This article (a) argues that two corrections should be introduced in 10.2–3 Bethe; (b) suggests that the anonymous commentary on Xenophon quoted by Pollux concerned not only the Περὶ ἱππικῆς, as traditionally assumed, but also the Ἱππαρχικός; and (c) re-examines the evidence supporting the hypothesis that Eratosthenes’ Σκευογραφικός was not part of the better-known Περὶ τῆς ἀρχαίας κωμῳδίας, but an independent work.

Abstract:
AbstractThe proposal I make for the restoration of fr. 22 Powell of the Erigone by Eratosthenes faithfully rewrites the manuscript tradition and does not conflict with the metre, as the line Ἰκαριοῖ, etc. (see fr. 4 R.) is balanced, thanks to the trihemimeral caesura and the bucolic diaeresis. To further my argument, I cite a series of hexameters from both earlier epic as well as that of the Hellenistic era, where the secondary caesurae (trihemimeral + hephthemimeral or bucolic) are either found alone or are reinforced, as the main caesura is absent or cannot be applied given the enclitic, preposition, and (sometimes) elision. Starting from the surviving line, I argue that in the Erigone mention was certainly made of the origins of tragedy, which are located in Attica. Eratosthenes drew from a pre-existing theory and, through his authority, made it the prevailing one. This can be seen from a plethora of similar evidence, in both later Greek and Latin authors and scholars.

Abstract:
The Sieve of Eratosthenes is an efficient algorithm for computing the successive primes. Rendered informally, it is as follows:1. Write down the successive “plurals”: 2, 3, 4, …2. Repeat:(a) Take the first number that is not circled or crossed out.(b) Circle it.(c) Cross out its proper multiples.3. What is left (i.e. the circled numbers) are the successive prime numbers.

Abstract:
One of the most ingenious arguments in all of Attic oratory is to be found in the speech Lysias wrote for Euphiletus to deliver at his trial for the murder of Eratosthenes (Lys. 1.30–5). In his speech Euphiletus first describes to the court how his wife was seduced by Eratosthenes, then recounts how he discovered the affair, caught the adulterer in the act, and, despite an offer to pay compensation, slew him. Euphiletus defends his action by citing the law of the Areopagus that whoever kills an adulterer caughtin flagrantiwith his wife cannot be convicted of murder. Euphiletus further points out that the same exemption applies to the man who catches someone seducing hispallakē. If the lawgiver regarded the seduction of apallakēas so serious that it merited the death penalty, Euphiletus argues, he must have regarded the seduction of a wife as even more reprehensible, deserving a penalty worse than death.

Summary This paper presents a new argument against the widely accepted view that Eratosthenes and some other Greek authors of the pre-Roman period measured distances in special stades that were much shorter than the ‚common‘ stade of 185 m attested by the majority of sources.

Abstract:
The armillary sphere is said to have been invented by the Greek astronomer Eratosthenes (276–194 BCE). Ptolemy’s Almagest (2nd century CE) contains a detailed description of the armillary sphere. However the armillary sphere described in Sanskrit texts on astronomy, from the seventh century onwards, is substantially different from the Greek armillary sphere.
