Abstract:
Aizhai Bridge is a stiffening steel truss girder suspension bridge and the main bridge consists of three spans of 242m+1176m+116m. It flies over Dehang Canyon, which is cliffy and steep, the depth between the designed elevation and the ground is 355 meters. In order to overcome the problems happened during the transportation, a new construction plan for the erection of steel truss girder is developed, combining the lifting technology with the cable-tracking transportation. Simply speaking, main cables and hangers are used as bearing structure, the track cables hanged on the hangers are used as transportation track. The transport vehicles system run along the tracking cables to deliver the steel truss girder, and the deck unit erecting system do the lifting job. In this paper, the scale model experiment and full scale model test of the track-cable transferring system are introduced, the design and test of erection gantry for deck unit are described. Finally, the engineering application of the track-cable erecting system is described. The results of experiment and engineering application show that the transportation and erection work of steel truss girder can quickly be completed by using the new construction plan. It is safe and economic solution, and has very broad prospect and practical value for the construction of suspension bridge and arch bridge.

Abstract:
Étienne-Jules Marey was born in Beaune, France, on March 5, 1830, to a wine merchant and a teacher. To satisfy his father's wishes, he decided to study medicine, attending the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. Marey's fascination with both animals and mechanics inspired him to concentrate on physiology, and it was during his investigations of this field that he became involved in optics.Ignazio Porro's primary contribution to optics was an innovative prism image erecting system that is commonly used in binoculars and stereomicroscopes, though he also invented and improved a number of other scientific instruments. Today Porro is often considered to have been ahead of his time in many ways. The Italian engineer received little acclaim or monetary compensation for his innovative devices, which only came to be fully appreciated and widely utilized after his death. In fact, when Ernst Abbe attempted to patent binoculars containing his own prism erecting system in 1893, the physicist was very surprised to find that someone else had invented and patented the design decades earlier. Despite his own intense work in the field of optics, Abbe had never heard of the inventor, a telling indication of Porro's difficulties.

Abstract:
Transnational migration flows have revitalised the interest in ethnicity in social sciences. The ethnic boundary approach (Barth, Wimmer) argues for a non-essentialist understanding of ethnicity and calls for detecting the factors that turn migrants into ethnic minorities. Based on ethnographic fieldwork among Dutch police officers between 2008 and 2013, this article presents three factors that together constitute a structural framework that produces events of ethnic boundary construction (salient ethnic identity plus ethnic closure) between migrant and non-migrant officers: (1) ethnicised precarity; (2) ethnic conflicts triggered by the ethnicising discourse in Dutch media and politics on migrants and migration; and (3) the quasi-therapeutic management style applied in the police organisation. It further calls for a differentiated understanding of migrants’ precarity, questions explanations of ethnic closure in terms of stereotypes and critically scrutinises socio-psychological approaches of ethnicity and diversity management.

Abstract:
This study adopts the flow shop concept used in industrial production to schedule repetitive non-linear construction projects, where specialized groups of workers execute processes in work zones (buildings) in a predefined order common to all groups. This problem is characteristic of construction projects that involve erecting multiple buildings. As the duration of the project heavily depends upon the sequence of the work zones, this study aims at providing a model and a practical approach for finding the optimal solution that assures the shortest duration of the project, allows the contractor to complete particular work zones (buildings) as soon as possible (without idle time), and conforms to a predefined sequence of work zone completion. This last constraint may arise from the client’s requirements or physical conditions of the project and has not been addressed by existing scheduling methods. Reducing the duration of the entire project brings the benefit of lower indirect costs and, if accompanied by a reduced duration of completing particular buildings (i.e., work zones), may also provide the opportunity to sell project deliverables sooner, thus improving the economic efficiency of the project. In search of optimal schedules, the authors apply the algorithms of Minimum Hamiltonian Cycle/Asymmetric Traveling Salesman Problem (ATSP).

Abstract:
Technologies of construction ofLow-rise buildings of various design schemes are considered. Particular attention is paid to the technologies of erecting blocked houses (townhouses), cottages and other low-rise buildings. As a basis of technologies, new design solutions and mechanization means are adopted, which ensure a reduction in the duration of work and material consumption in the construction of low-rise buildings. Thus, the article shows that the transition from tape foundations to foundation slabs reduces the duration of work on the foundation in 2,5-3,0 times. The technological features of the erection of the blocked houses of the wall system and the prefabricated monolithic system are considered. It is shown that irrespective of the constructive scheme, the external walls according to thermotechnical indices are made of gas silicate blocks with a density of D 350-400 and a thickness of 450 mm, which makes it possible to reduce the work complexity in 2,0-2,5 times compared to a brick or three-layer masonry. It is shown that the use of gas silicate blocks allows the construction of buildings up to three floors in various climatic zones. It is shown that an increase in the production of gas silicate blocks is associated with the economic benefit of their use. In addition, the statistics on heat consumption in townhouses testify to the use of gas-silicate blocks, which are twicelower than city-wide ones, and thelabor intensity of the gas-silicate blocks is five times lower than the brickwork and cheaper by 15-20%.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to conceptualize brand repulsion as a specific nuance of brand rejection, highlight the boundary work at play in situations of collective brand repulsion and extract implications for the brands that are at the centre of such situations and to delineate future directions for scholars. Design/methodology/approach The authors’ study of the “I Hate Apple” group on Facebook is grounded in a six-year long naturalistic enquiry designed to capture the boundary work performed by its members. The authors’ sources include netnographic data, online focus groups, observations and personal online correspondence with members and moderators. Findings This study’s findings reveal that certain brands serve the identity work of consumers by allowing them in erecting boundaries based on three major sources of repulsion: anti-fandom, anti-hegemony and anti-marketing. They show that for each type of boundary work, corporate and product brand repulsion seems prevalent. Research limitations/implications This research limits itself to considering the types of boundary work related to brand repulsion as regards a single brand: Apple. Practical implications The study can help managers identify the types(s) of boundary work related to their brand and it provides practical recommendations for these various sources of brand repulsion. It also helps them distinguish between consumer brand repulsion directed against their product and their corporation. Originality/value This study advances knowledge in the field of brand rejection by exploring a specific nuance: brand repulsion. Its close examination of consumer collective practices offers a deeper understanding of the ins and outs of the paradoxical phenomenon of repulsion/attraction for a brand. The cultural lens is used as an original approach to this under-investigated nuance of brand rejection.

In recent years, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been initiating an unprecedented change in the construction industry. Aside from establishing three-dimensional (3-D) numerical model with the capacity to compute object-oriented parameters, the objects within the model are interconnected through defined parameters. If one object changes, the affected objects are automatically adjusted. Engineers can achieve virtual design and construction by using this model to check not only the integrality of designs and drawings but also the possible collision of objects in space.. The purpose of this study is to verify the effectiveness of using BIM tools by simulating the erection of a steel bridge. By converting the original 2-D detailed drawings into 3-D models and combining with the erection plan (the Gantt chart), a 4-D simulation of steel bridge erection is produced. The erection procedures were checked in the virtual 4-D models and verified with subsequent works in the real field. Based on these results, the effectiveness and benefits of using BIM are discussed. When the Su Le Bridge project team reviewed the erection plan, the results of the 4-D simulation showed the different space states of the steel bridge at different points in time, effectively pointing out collisions in space that would have been disastrous before any actual hoisting. Necessary adjustments to the construction site, equipment, and lifting steps were made in time, and the lifting was completed smoothly before the deadline. Utilizing BIM technology in the three-dimensional modeling program, we found a particular spatial collision that can not easily be spotted in a two-dimensional drawing. To avoid this conflict, the placement of concrete was rescheduled to later time. Of the four communication and coordination issues raised from reviewing the 4-D models, two are foreseeable by professional sub-contractors, but cannot be correctly expressed. The other two were not foreseen, but was corrected in time through our simulation. Applying existing BIM tools for reviewing the steel bridge erection plan as in this particular case, two trained graduate students, although without any on-site construction experience, completed the tasks in three months, proposed procedural recommendations for reliable hoisting. The benefits of using BIM tools for virtually check, review, and integrate detailed drawings and designs have been clearly demonstrated. Further use of the models is suggested for the development of lean construction

Abstract:
Well-controlled (Type 1 and Type 2) investigations have demonstrated the efficacy of psychological interventions for erectile dysfunctions. However, when the oral agent sildenafil was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998, its introduction was nothing short of dramatic. Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase Type 5 inhibitor (PDE 5) that enhances the man’s ability to achieve a natural erection given adequate psychic and physical stimulation. Unlike other interventions, such as self-injection, transurethral, or vacuum therapy, sildenafil does not induce erection irrespective of the man’s degree of arousal. Although myths abound, sildenafil does not improve libido, promote spontaneous erections, or increase the size of the penis. The efficacy of sildenafil has been demonstrated in Type 1 multiple double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter studies. A large number of placebo-controlled, double-blind studies have demonstrated that fluoxetine, sertraline, clomipramine, and paroxetine can be used to delay ejaculatory latency in men with rapid ejaculation. Since the early 1970s, an array of individual, conjoint, and group therapy approaches employing behavioral strategies such as stop-start or squeeze techniques have evolved as the psychological treatments of choice for rapid ejaculation, although the impressive initial posttreatment success rates, ranging from 60 to 95%, are not necessarily sustainable; three years after treatment, success rates dwindle to 25%.

Abstract:
Kuwait is considering diversifying its energy resources and not solely depending on oil and gas. According to the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW), the annual increase in electricity demand is 6–8%, which is considered higher than neighboring countries (2–3%). Wind energy is one of the renewable energy resources considered by the Government to close the gap between the supply and the demand. In this work, we are exploring the feasibility of erecting a wind farm of installed capacity of 120 MW in a suitable location in Kuwait. Hourly wind data was collected from three promising locations. Abraq Al-Habari (AH), one of three areas studied, enjoys the highest average wind speed of 5.12 m/s resulting in wind power density (WPD) of 181 W/m2 at a mast height of 10 meters. Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program (WAsP) was used to estimate the energy production from the wind farm. The program takes into account the complexity of the terrain, the site roughness, and the obstacles and shelters effects. The results showed that the wind farm should be able to produce a net annual energy production (AEP) of 322 GWh and will cost about 260 million US$. This cost includes the installation capital cost as well as the operation expenses over the lifespan of the wind farm. The cost of energy production is estimated at 0.04 US$/kWh. The payback period considering an annual price escalation rate of 1% and a discount rate of 2.25% over the lifespan of the farm is predicted to be around ten years.

Abstract:
<p>Segmental bridge construction combines the advantages of prefabrication, for example the reduction of construction time and very high product quality, with those of common bridge erecting methods. Short precast segments are assembled and prestressed to form the complete superstructure. New methods divide these segments into prefabricated elements to create new lighter versions of the segments. For this to work, new joint types must be developed which can ensure the force transfer between the segments. In this paper, several methods, including a new concept for joining thin-walled pre-fabricated elements, are described. Push-off tests with a constant lateral force were carried out to assess the shear strength and deformation behaviour. The main parameters were the joint type (wet joints: plain, grooved, keyed; dry joints), the mortar type, and the level of lateral force. In this paper, the test results are presented and recalculations with a design code are shown.</p>

Abstract: Le Corbusier was a great searcher. A light searcher. Afterwards a first period of searching he founded his cubic and white architecture and after the Word War II and fifteen years without erecting up a building, Le Corbusier restarted a new path, a new search for the light in his architecture, much broader. In this second age, the work with the light and with the shadow, mostly with the shadow, as plastic and sculptural mechanism is very deep. He worked with the light via two systems: “interposition” and “capture”. The mechanism of “interposition” was developed by Le Corbusier by means of the BriseSoleil, at the beginning, and later, much more strongly, by means of the “parasol-sun shade buildings”, erected like front façades. The “catching” system, done on a smaller scale, was made by the construction of several skylights and gaps, searching for the light and always with different orientations. Finally say that a material architect as Le Corbusier was, he constructed with the immaterial light, weave of his works. The buildings studied are a few, all of them part of second period and they are the core of Le Corbusier´s buildings. Palabras clave: Luz, Sombra, Buscar, Interposición, Captación, Silencio. Abstract:
This paper introduces a novel prefabricated and shallow steel-concrete composite flooring system which is consisted of two main structural components: two C-channel steel beams and a partially encased concrete floor. The concrete floor, which is in the form of T ribbed slab sections, was constructed using two types of concrete (reinforced normal concrete and reinforced lightweight aggregate concrete). The steel edge beams partially encase the floor slab and provide clear and straight finish edges. The floor slab spans to a maximum of 2.0m inclusive of the width of the steel edges with a finished depth of only 230mm. The unique features of the proposed system are reducing the weight and the number of erection lifts (during installation) by using lighter elements (lightweight concrete and shallow steel beams) while the wider possible units have been proposed to fit on transportation tracks; further reducing the extent of site works by pre-off site fabrication, examining the material cost against the fabrication and site erection costs. For the composite slab in bending, the longitudinal shear force is transferred by a unique shear mechanism which results from the special shear connectors. This paper includes the work of a total 2 full-scale push-out tests aimed at investigating the longitudinal shear behaviour of these novel flooring systems and the effects of additional shear connectors. An analytical work is also carried out to investigate the failure mechanism of the system.

Abstract:
Dual-crane lifting has been generally used with the need of erection and installation of large equipment. Choosing proper locations for two mobile cranes is an important work as well as a difficulty in design of heavy lifting plan. So, this paper proposes an optimization method of location for cooperative lifting of dual-crane. This approach starts with determining search field and maximum step length, and then finds out load’s possible initial locations by bisection method; secondly calculates work envelope of dual-crane which will be dispersed to find all dual-crane’s possible locations; after this, it puts cranes in their respective possible locations corresponding to each load’s location and simulates the whole lifting course while carries out collision detection to exclude crash happened locations; finally, creates weighted optimization function, uses enumeration method to traverse all collision-free locations, and gains optimal location of dual-crane and load. At last, this approach has been used in an actual engineering case and optimal location is got, from which we can see its feasibility and validity.

Abstract:
<p>For the majority of steel outdoor facilities (towers, masts, billboards and traffic-sign supporting structures) wind loading is the governing factor for determining their resistance and stiffness. In many cases fatigue-related issues appear, with cracking and failure in the welded connections of tubular joints or in the parent metal adjacent to the welds.</p><p>Structural detailing of the joints in steel tubular structures subjected to repeated cyclic loading is of great importance for their fatigue strength. Sharp changes in the shape, sharp turns in the welds and notches give rise to high stress concentration. The combined effect of discontinuities and stress concentration is the main cause for the formation and propagation of fatigue cracks. When detailing the erection joints it is also necessary to observe technological requirements related to efficiency of fabrication. For the civil engineering works exposed to public it is indispensable to include additional requirements for the aesthetic appearance of their visible structural parts. The design experience shows that applying aesthetic considerations to steel tubular joint detailing may contribute to satisfying the increased fatigue strength requirements.</p><p>The paper presents a study on the wind action on a specific kind of civil engineering works (traffic- sign supporting structures) and the approach used for its determination. The leading structural, technological and aesthetic criteria to be implemented in the detailing of tubular erection joints are formulated. An example of tubular joint destroyed due to propagation of fatigue crack is given and possible options for the joint repair are proposed. Numerical modeling and analyses of the original and repaired joints have been carried out in order to make conclusions for the advantages and shortcomings of the joint repair options.</p>

Abstract:
<p>Bridges are subject to extreme corrosion attack due to the surrounding conditions. Chlorides in a maritime atmosphere, de-icing salts or Sulphur Dioxide in an industrial atmosphere cause high corrosion rates if mild steel is left unprotected.</p> <p>The paper shows the best corrosion protection for a long service life under all these conditions offered by a duplex-coating combining a thermally sprayed zinc-based layer with a fitting top-coat. It introduces the thermal spraying process and ist application on bridges, which can be performed in the plant or at the worksite, du r ing erection and for repair work.</p> <p>Thermal Spraying is a well-established process which has been in existence for more than a hundred years. It is used manually, semi-automated and fully automated. Thermal Spraying with zinc and zinc-alloys is a "cold" process having no influence on the microstructure of the coated steel. It refers to worldwide standards and norms, which assure the highest quality of material, work and coatings.</p> <p>Worldwide references on steel bridges are presented as well as the latest developments in research. Throughout this abstract, the results of an intensive study over a service life of more than 26 years of duplex systems for Offshore Wind Energy plants is shown.</p> <p>In conclusion, the presentation also offers a quick view to the application of thermal spraying on concrete bridge structures to protect the rebar by cathodic protection.</p>

Botsch, Wolfgang, Silva Smalian, Peter Hinterding, Holger Völzke, Dietmar Wolff, and Eva-Maria Kasparek. "Safety Aspects of Dry Spent Fuel Storage and Spent Fuel Management." In ASME 2013 15th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2013-96039.

Abstract:
As with the storage of all radioactive materials, the storage of spent nuclear fuel (SF) and high-level radioactive waste (HLW) must conform to safety requirements. Safety aspects like safe enclosure of radioactive materials, safe removal of decay heat, nuclear criticality safety and avoidance of unnecessary radiation exposure must be achieved throughout the storage period. The implementation of these safety requirements can be achieved by dry storage of SF and HLW in casks as well as in other systems such as dry vault storage systems or spent fuel pools, where the latter is neither a dry nor a passive system. After the events of Fukushima, the advantages of passively and inherently safe dry storage systems have become more obvious. TÜV and BAM, who work as independent experts for the competent authorities, present the licensing process for sites and casks and inform about spent nuclear fuel management and issues concerning dry storage of spent nuclear fuel, based on their long experience in these fields. All safety relevant issues like safe enclosure, shielding, removal of the decay heat or behavior of cask and building under accident conditions are checked and validated with state-of-the-art methods and computer codes before the license approval. It is shown how dry storage systems can ensure the compliance with the mentioned safety criteria over a long storage period. Exemplarily, the process of licensing, erection and operation of selected German dry storage facilities is presented.
