Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The ascetic-eremitic life typical of the elite spirituality of Buddhism and pre-Protestant Christianity was not a part of Chinese culture prior to the introduction of Buddhism, and it has been viewed askance from the standpoint of normative Chinese values to the present. On the other hand, an unusual non-ascetic eremitism has a history in China that precedes Buddhism. The equivalent of the eremitic life in China into the present, for the elite, of course, was to refuse to hold governmental office or to be forced into retirement. This was a lifestyle understood as a religious one often related to ecstatic religious experience as well as maintaining the highest ethical values. There was no asceticism involved indeed, such a life was often one devoted to aesthetic pursuits- except the poverty that may follow from being unemployed.

Abstract:
Based on an ethnographic study of ‘Western’ forms of contemporary shamanism in North East Scotland, the article discusses the significant role that eremitism plays in folk healing systems, particularly in shamanism. The tendency to live an isolated life is not only a key feature of traditional shamanic healing practices, but it can also be found in contemporary manifestations of them. Two such cases are discussed in this article. Terry Mace and Norman Duncan are two contemporary shamanic healers who live and offer services in the wider region of North East Scotland. For different individual reasons, they have self-consciously decided to isolate themselves geographically, living simply and self-abundantly, and leading an eremitic way of life away from materialism and socialising. The article thus focuses on examining the role of eremitism in the life of these two healers in an attempt to highlight the significance of the phenomenon in contemporary shamanisms.

Manuskrypt ten jest obecnie przechowywany w Archiwum Jasnogórskim. Paulina Eremus o. Abstract:

Abstract— Reinterpreting the morphology of two taxa proposed by Victoria C. Hollowell in the 1980s and not formally published, we describe here three new species of Eremitis, a Neotropical genus of herbaceous bamboos (Poaceae, Bambusoideae, Olyreae), which is endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Two of them, Eremitis grandiflora and E. paucifolia, are endemic to Espírito Santo state. Eremitis victoriae occurs in southern Espírito Santo and has also been documented for southern Bahia. Eremitis grandiflora is similar to the smallest species of the genus, but can be differentiated by its decumbent culms with scale-like leaf blades and its longer gynecandrous whorls. Eremitis paucifolia is characterized by its leafy culms with a reduced number of leaves [5‐6(‐7)] compared to other species of the genus. Eremitis victoriae is distinguished from the congeneric species mainly by its abaxially glaucous leaf blades. Here, we provide an identification key to all described species of Eremitis that occur in Espírito Santo, as well as a map with their geographical distribution. All three new species are illustrated with both line drawings and photographic images, and an informal assessment of their conservation status is presented.

Abstract:
The subject of the article is the formation of the concept of a hermit or an anchorite in thelight of the codification of the Latin Church law after Vatican II. In canon 603 CIC/83, the legislator uses two terms of a hermit and anchorite, which when used interchangeably have a rich semantics as presented by the author, going back to Christian antiquity. CIC/17 did not normalize the canonical status of eremitic life in the Latin Church. It was not until the period of codification after Vatican II that a canonical norm governing eremitic life was formed. As a result of codification work, eremitic life was recognized by canon 603 CIC/83 as one of the forms of individual consecrated life. In modern times, both in the Byzantine and Latin traditions, eremitic life is flourishing attracting both men and women.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: A possible reduction in stocks of medicinal plant raw materials of Thymus serpyllum L. and Thymus vulgaris L. leads to the need to expand the raw material base of the official medicinal plants with using of endemic species of the flora of Kazakhstan, in particular, Thymus rasitatus Klokov, and Thymus eremita Klokov. AIM: The aim of the study was to study the possibility of using 70% ethanol extracts of T. rasitatus and T. eremita as antimicrobial agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aerial parts of T. rasitatus and T. eremita were extracted with 70% ethanol using ultrasound assisted extraction. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of the 70% ethanol extracts were determined using the liquid chromatography-detection-ESI-mass spectrometry-(MS)/MS technique. The study of the antimicrobial activity of these extracts was performed for eight strains of Gram-positive bacteria, six strains of Gram-negative bacteria, and four cultures of fungi. RESULTS: Chromatographic analysis of hydroalcoholic extracts of both investigated Thymus species showed very similar phenolic compounds composition. In both cases, the major components are luteolin-7-O-glucoside and rosmarinic acid. About 70% ethanol extracts of T. rasitatus and T. eremita have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity, exhibit the bactericidal or bacteriostatic activity against all tested bacteria and fungi at concentration range of 0.0195–20 mg/ml, but differ in their potency against tested strains of microorganisms. CONCLUSION: About 70% ethanol extracts of T. rasitatus and T. eremita, endemic plants in the flora of Kazakhstan, can be considered as potential drugs with a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity. The results of chromatographic analysis could be used for drug standardization.

Abstract:
The hermit beetle Osmoderma eremita (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is a flagship species for invertebrate conservation efforts by the European Union. This taxon has recently been revealed as a species complex likely encompassing five cryptic species. The northernmost population of Osmoderma is found on the island of Ruissalo in Turku, Finland. This population has been protected as species O. eremita, but its true species affinity has never been established. To resolve its identity,we sequenced themitochondrial COI gene from seven specimens sampled in Ruissalo. Based on a phylogenetic hypothesis generated from the sequences combined with previously published data, the Finnish hermit beetle was identified as Osmoderma barnabita. Information regarding the ecology and life cycle of O. eremita should then not uncritically be assumed to apply to the Finnish population. Rather, the Finnish population should be treated as a separate entity in conservation and management of European Osmoderma.

Abstract:
Protichnites eremita from the Cambrian Elk Mound Group of Wisconsin is reinterpreted based on new material and trackway experiments. Two new forms of P. eremita suggest that the discrete medial imprints of these traces could be produced by the segmented postabdomen of euthycarcinoids from the same deposit. Form 1 could have been produced by a pair of euthycarcinoids traveling together, like in limulid amplexus, where both individuals made imprints with their postabdomens. In this scenario, if one individual held its postabdomen to the left side, it is possible to produce left-handed shingling in trackways and angled segmentation of each medial imprint. Form 2 could have been produced by a single animal traveling in arcing or tightly looping paths. Experimentally-produced medial imprints yield morphologies that are consistent with both trackway forms. Thus, it seems more likely that P. eremita was produced directly by the animal's body (alone or paired) rather than by employing hermit-like behavior.

Abstract:

Abstract:
From a total of 4140 marine fishes examined, eight species of parasitic isopods were reported from marine fishes in the Gulf of Thailand. These isopods were identified in two families, Corallanidae (Argathona macronema and Argathona rhinoceros) and Cymothoidae (Cymothoa eremita, Cymothoa elegans, Smenispa irregularis, Nerocila sundaica, Norileca indica and Norileca triangulata). Most of these parasitic isopods were found in the buccal cavity of their fish hosts with one host recorded as follows: C. eremita was found from Nemipterus hexodon, C. elegans was found from Scatophagus argus, N. sundaica was found from Saurida tumbil. The majority of the isopod specimens recorded in this study was S. irregularis, which was found in the buccal cavities of five host fish, Pampus argentius, Alepes melanoptera, Caranx hippos, Parastromateus niger and Terapon jarbua, with a prevalence of 11.67%, 10.43%, 9.78%, 6.10% and 4.21%, respectively. Argathona rhinoceros was found in the nasal cavity and branchial cavity of Epinephelus coioides, whereas A. macronema and N. triangulata were found on the skin of Epinephelus coioides and Seriolina nigrofasciata, respectively. The highest species diversity was found in E. coioides, which harbored two species of parasitic isopods, A. macronema and A. rhinoceros. Cymothoa eremita, C. elegans, S. irregularis and N. triangulata were recorded for the first time in the Gulf of Thailand. The reported discovery of C. eremita, S. irregularis, N. sundaica and N. triangulata in their fish hosts were new recorded hosts. Moreover, A. macronema and N. triangulata were found for the first time in the central Indo-Pacific region.

Abstract:
Insects have evolved various adaptations that allow them to survive adverse seasons. In terms of cold-hardiness, they may classically be divided into freezing-susceptible versus freezing-tolerant species. But this concept of two alternative cold-hardiness strategies is now amendable, and to better understand these adaptive mechanisms, it is of interest to study freezing resistance in taxonomically related insect species, i.e., belonging to the same family or to a group of closely related organisms sharing similar resources. Freezing susceptibility and freezing tolerance have previously been recorded in the larvae of species in the same guild of the family Cetoniidae, which mainly colonise wood mould in hollow trees. We compared freezing hardiness in five species of Cetoniidae, three species in the subfamily Trichiinae, Gnorimus nobilis (Linné), Trichius fasciatus (Linné), and Osmoderma eremita (Scopoli), and two species in the subfamily Cetoniinae, Cetonia aurata (Linné) and Cetonischema aeruginosa (Drury). Our results mainly show that two contrasting mechanisms are used during winter by third-instar larvae: those of the Trichiinae (apart from O. eremita) are probably characterized by year-round freezing susceptibility, and those of O. eremita and the Cetoniinae are probably distinguished by seasonal freezing susceptibility (summer) and seasonal freezing tolerance (winter). We question the current taxonomic position of the genus Osmoderma. Morphological, ecological, and behavioural arguments may be put forward to support the transfer of O. eremita from the Trichiinae to the Cetoniinae, and we stress that ecophysiological arguments, often neglected in this kind of taxonomic revision, must also be taken into account.

Abstract:
Results of a molecular analysis on the European hermit beetles (the <em>Osmoderma</em> <em>eremita</em> species-complex), recently published in a companion paper, are shortly dis- cussed and commented. These results indicate a clear-cut distinction between two clades. The first one includes the W-European <em>O. eremita</em> Scopoli, 1763, and the two Italian endemic taxa <em>O. italicum</em> Sparacio, 2000 and <em>O. cristinae</em> Sparacio, 1994, from southern peninsular Italy and Sicily, respectively. The second one includes the widespread E-European<em> O. barnabita</em> Motschulsky, 1845 (<strong>nom. resurr</strong>.), and the southern Balcanic <em>O. lassallei</em> Baraud &amp; Tauzin, 1991 from Greece and European Turkey. Within the two clades, molecular data well support a specific rank for <em>O. lassallei</em> and <em>O. barnabita</em> on one side, and of <em>O.</em> <em>eremita</em> and <em>O. cristinae</em> on the other side, while the taxonomic position of <em>O. italicum</em>, more closely related with <em>O. eremita</em>, is still uncertain, waiting for analysis of additional specimens of this very rare taxon. Current geographical distribution, interspecific genetic diversification, and relatively low levels of intraspecific genetic divergence in <em>O. eremita</em> sensu stricto, are hypothesized to be the result of multiple speciation events (mainly occurred in refugial forest areas of the Italian and Balkan peninsulas and Sicily before and during the Pleistocene glacial peaks), followed by fast post-glacial northward and westward expansion of some species. The need of further genetic data on the rare and threatened hermit beetle species and the importance of more detailed information on their distribution ranges are emphasized and discussed, in order to plan conservation strategies in the near future. An updated worldwide checklist of the species of the genus <em>Osmoderma</em> is finally presented.

About Osmoderma eremita (Scopoli, 1763) in Switzerland The finding of fragments of Osmoderma eremita (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae) in September 2009, at the base of an oak (Quercus robur) in Geneva's countryside, suggests that this beetle of national importance still occurs in the canton of Geneva. The survival of this species relies on the availability of old hollow trees. These have largely disappeared with the intensification of land use and the changes in sylvopastoral practices. The creation and tending of hedge networks hosting large old trees would allow not only to preserve an emblematic species, but also the witnesses of ancient practices and cultural heritage.

Abstract:
The transformation of eremitic communities into Augustinian priories was a notable feature of early Augustinian growth; during the twelfth century no less than about 50 houses of the order began in this way. The popularity of the eremitic way of life had increased considerably during the eleventh century and, once established, a hermit often inspired others to join him, thus becoming the unwitting instigator of a religious group which needed formal organization. The Rule of St. Augustine was the constitution most frequently adopted in these circumstances. This was because it provided a general framework for community life rather than a set of detailed instructions and could therefore be assimilated more easily by an established group.

Abstract:
We describe a new species of Eremias lacertid from the Alborz Mountain range in northern Iran (Tehran Province). Eremias papenfussi n. sp. is part of the Eremias subgenus (or morphotype) by virtue of lacking lateral fringes on the fourth toe and color pattern. It can be further differentiated from previously described species assigned to this morphotype by the absence of distinctly keeled upper caudal scales, gular scales that do not extend to the second inframaxiallary scales, color pattern, and scale counts. Eremias papenfussi is found on rocky mountain slopes of the Alborz where it is presumed to have a much broader distribution than demonstrated by the available specimens. Of the 15 species of Eremias known from Iran, E. papenfussi is the fifth species known to inhabit rocky mountain slopes along with E. strauchi, E. lalezharica, E. montanus and E. novo.

Abstract:
Lenzi A., Maurizi E., Mosconi F., Cecchetti M., Francescato S., Noal A., Stolfa G., Roversi P. F., Campanaro A. – Osmoderma eremita (Scopoli, 1763) (Coleoptera Scarabaeidae Cetoniinae) in Circeo State Forest (Central Italy). Osmoderma eremita (Scopoli, 1763) was recorded for the first time in Circeo State Forest (SAC IT6040014) by volunteers participating at the LIFE ESC360 Project “360 volunteers for monitoring forest biodiversity in the Italian Natura 2000 Network”. This finding is the result of several surveys started in 2018 that have been carried out using different sampling methodologies, including a conservation detection dog. Two male specimens of O.eremita have been collected in summer 2021, by the use of black cross windows traps baited with the species pheromone. This record provides new information on the scattered distribution of this species in the Latium Region and confirms the biodiversity value of Circeo State Forest. Furthermore, this result corroborates the importance of cooperation between non-experts and scientists, i.e. citizen science. This approach is essential to carry out monitoring programmes aimed at assessing the conservation status of protected species. Meanwhile, it allows to involve, educate, and raise awareness among non-experts, resulting in the establishment of a general positive mindset and attitude towards forest biodiversity.
