Full textThe aim of this thesis is to calculate and compare the greenhouse gas emissions of the wastewater sludge treatment alternatives in the challenging northern conditions. In these calculations used treatment methods for wastewater sludge are windrow composting of sludge, anaerobic digestion of sludge, incineration of mechanically dried sludge, and thermal drying and incineration of thermally dried sludge. The participating wastewater treatment plants in the calculations are Taskila sewage treatment plant (Oulun Vesi) and Lakeuden Keskuspuhdistamo Oy (Kempeleen Vesihuolto) from Northern Ostrobothnia; Peuraniemi sewage treatment plant (Kajaanin Vesi Oy) and Mustola sewage treatment plant (The municipality of Sotkamo) from Kainuu region; and Mellanaapa sewage treatment plant (Inarin Lapin Vesi Oy) and Levi sewage treatment plant (Levin Vesihuolto Oy) from Lapland. Hypothetical sludge treatment facilities in the calculations are windrow composting areas in Oulu, Kempele, Kajaani, Ivalo and Kittilä; biogas plants in Oulu and Rovaniemi; incinerator plants of the mechanically dried sludge in Riihimäki and Oulu; and thermal drying plant and incinerator plant of thermally dried sludge in Haapavesi. Data for the calculations is gotten from sewage treatment plants and sludge treatment facilities. Emission factors and other values for calculations has been found from models and calculators, programs, articles and other possible sources. The greenhouse gases in the calculations are methane (CH₄), dinitrogen oxide (N₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) including bio-based carbon dioxide (CO₂-bio). Results of the calculations are produced emissions, avoided emissions and net emissions. Based on the calculations, the lowest produced emissions were obtained from anaerobic digestion of sludge where biogas is produced both for processing traffic biogas and for combined heat and power (CHP). The highest produced emissions were either thermal drying of sludge with electricity and light fuel oil and incineration of thermally dried sludge, or windrow composting of sludge, depending on the sewage treatment plant. Greenhouse gases can be avoided if for example biogas replace fossil fuels and soil or digestate replace fertilizers. Avoided emissions were lower than produced emissions in every case. The lowest net emission were achieved in anaerobic digestion of sludge where biogas was produced for combined heat and power in every sewage treatment plant. The highest net emissions were produced in windrow composting of sludge in every sewage treatment plant except in Levi where thermal drying with electricity and light fuel oil and incineration of thermally dried sludge was the highest one. Special northern conditions for sludge treatment are long and cold winter, long-distance transports and, in some cases, relatively low amounts of sludge. In the greenhouse gas calculations northern conditions have been taken into account well in greenhouse gas emissions of long-distance transports. On the other hand, emission factors measured in the northern conditions were difficult to find. When the results of the calculations are studied, it should be noted that the values used in the calculations are taken from the literature and from the partners. And often there was need to make assumptions and generalizations
