Abstract:
During their early years, young children are exposed to a range of learning settings, both formal and informal. This study focused on young children's engagement and reflection in an informal museum context. Using qualitative research methodology, a three-week community art project, The Art of Eric Carle, was examined. This setting combined an interactive art exhibition and an art studio workshop, to resemble the informal learning context characteristic of popular, contemporary, interactive museum venues of all kinds. Through a descriptive interpretative analysis, the study aimed to document the experiences and abilities of young children (aged birth to eight years) as artists and art appreciators within this environment. A broader aim of the study was to identify a range of conditions that support high quality experiences for young children in informal learning settings in general. A detailed set of ideal criteria, encompassing the physical, programming and social components of the learning setting was developed and applied to The Art of Eric Carle project. The findings of the study clearly demonstrated that certain conditions enhance young children's engagement and reflection in informal learning settings. While physical, programming and social factors all play a role in forming young visitors' experiences, it is the social component of the learning environment, specifically children's interactions with adults, that determines the quality of their encounters. Social exchanges assist children to interpret the museum environment and its exhibits and to successfully take part in the learning experiences offered. A synergistic relationship exists between physical, programming and social factors, and with equal attention given to each of these aspects of the informal learning setting, high quality experiences can be provided for young children.

There are different sorotypes of Escherichia coli responsable for enteric disfunctions, and in the most of time those are related with meat consume or contaminated food that had not been cooked with an efficient thermal treatment before been ingested. In Brazil there aren t inform data of possible outbreaks caused by E. coli O157:H7, but this pathogen has been frequently isolated from cattle s feces, and it was recently isolated from bovine carcass at two slaughterhouses in Goiás. The present study has the objective to characterize by ERIC-PCR E. coli and E. coli O157:H7 detected at bovine carcass surfaces and check the power of this methodology to identify different isolates of E. coli and E. coli O157:H7. ERIC-PCR was used to characterize 111 samples, and it was obtained 32 fingerprints separated in 90 isolates of E. coli and eight fingerprints separated in 16 isolates of E. coli O157:H7. From the total of 111 samples, two isolates of E. coli and five of E. coli O157:H7 were non-tipables. The fingerprints varies from one to 18 bands. The discrimination between the samples was high, showing the big power of ERIC-PCR to discriminate isolates from one specie. The discriminatory index between E. coli and E. coli O157:H7 obtained was 0,96.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine how professionals in care for older people experience older people´s needs of counselling in grievous life questions. A qualitative method has been chosen in the form of individual semi-structured interviews with six care workers in municipal care for older people. The theoretical bases which have been applied are social constructionism and Erik Homburger Erikson's theory: Stages of Psychosocial Development. The result of the study shows that older people in care for older people sometimes are in need of counselling. These needs are not always fulfilled today because of the care workers lack of time and expertise in facing grievous life questions. Counsellors in care for older people are presumed to increase because older people in the future will make more demands and also will find it more natural in life crisis to talk to a counsellor.

Abstract:

Bergslagets museum is one of the oldest industrial museums in Sweden. It opened in 1922 in Falun, by the big mining company Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags Aktiebolag. This is a study of why a company would be interested in running a museum, why Bergslagets museum opened and who the people were that created it.

Several persons were involved in collecting and organizing the models of old machinery, letters, paintings, pictures that was to become the Bergslagets museum. This paper shows different motives behind the opening of an industrial museum in Falun and gives a presentation of its superintendants, Carl Sahlin, Alvar Silow, Erik Johan Ljungberg and Olof Söderberg. All of them were central in the creating of the Bergslagets museum, today known as Gruvmuseet i Falun.

Kaufman, Isabel Esther. "Assessing Spirituality Among Hospice Patients: A Phenomenological Study of Hospice Nurses." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1518.

Full text
Abstract:
The shift in health care and nursing philosophy and practice from a holistic approach to a highly technological, cure-oriented approach has been attributed to effective pharmaceuticals made to prolong life. Recently medical professionals have shifted their focus to a combination of spiritual healing and medicine. Hospice care in particular have taken a key interest in integrating spirituality within their health care. The problem is that due to the complications in defining spirituality and appropriate training and education of spirituality within nursing curriculum, assessing patients' spiritual distress may be difficult for many hospice nurses which may be at a loss when attempting to integrate spirituality within their practice. This study used a phenomenological approach to explore the infusion of spirituality in nursing practice and the hospice nurses perceptions of assessing spiritual distress needs of terminally ill patients. Frankl's existential theory and Kubler- Ross's stages of grief theory framed the study. Participants included 8 hospice nurses working in a Pacific Northwestern state. Face-to-face interviews were conducted to explore the essence of the experience of integrating spirituality as well as their views and concerns regarding assessment instruments used to assess spiritual distress. Data was analyzed for content themes. The study found that spiritual courses were merged into hospice nursing as a teaching unity making it difficult for hospice nurses in a Pacific Northwestern State to fully grasp the concept of spirituality. Further findings suggested that only a handful of schools had spiritual nursing as an independent course. The study may impact social change by informing the advancement of hospice nurses and hospice administrators in the practice of including spirituality within healthcare and integrating extensive existential support training within nurses' curriculum.

Abstract:
An infinite gray roof with different degrees of transparency is displayed with authority on a Scandinavia made of pieces, fragmented. However, the sky that covers these lands unifies it. The light passes through it and reaches the level of human development in an ethereal way, like an intense white mist, with an almost liquid consistency that allows it to spill on every corner, object, person or building. These particular characteristics can be reflected through art in paintings, films, writings and architectural works. The sensitivity of some artists to this imprecise reality, this forbidden heaven and this invasive northern light was sometimes the real pattern to recreate their art. Vilhelm Hammershøi lived among grays, in a home with stripped interiors. The succession of one gray after in his paintings and images out of focus with fuzzy boundaries constitute a constant grisaille. This unreal light invades Hammershøi's exteriors and architectural paintings, creating a particular atmosphere that was the main inspiration for the films of Carl Theodor Dreyer. Black and white is manipulated in Dreyer's films. White prevails over black. The scale of lighter grays is used to show neutrality, purity, reality without sieves. The manipulation of the northern light in Dreyer's films creates oppressive or ethereal indoor spaces. It also creates backlight exterior scenes where the characters struggle against being dissolved by the intense light or quiet outdoors where the characters disintegrate and almost merge with the background. Poul Henningsen was obsessed with the manipulation of artificial light. He searched the warmth that the Nordic daylight was deprived of. The perfect balance between light and shadow was his goal in order to achieve quiet environments and meeting places. He searched for the vibration of fire in his lamps, longing for the colour of sunlight and feeling nostalgia for his childhood which had passed around an oil lamp light. The search for this vibration can also be found in the Faaborg Museum, designed by Carl Petersen, and it is also mentioned in his three conferences "Textures", "Contrasts" and "Colours." The light passes through the sieve of colour to generate a feeling of warmth characteristic of other latitudes. Red, blue and yellow invade the art galleries, and create the background where the works of art are exhibited. Petersen considers light as the source of colour, all colours are present in it. Erik Gunnar Asplund materialized the transition between tradition and modernity, having a critical and selective look over the new trends. With a tendency to stand out the functionally most important spaces of each building, he gave them relevance morphologically and with the use of light. Arne Jacobsen follows Asplund's steps. A distinct identity emerges and Jacobsen is one of the architects that build on an anonymous Danish architecture background and the prospects of modern architecture. The northern light in the Scandinavian buildings is filtered through designed openings, gaps through which the light slips creating domes, walls and beams, defined by the shadow gradually gaining ground. From light to darkness there is an innumerable range of tonalities, curves and planes, in other words, architectural forms. The simplicity and minimalism present in these artists is unintentional. The light fills their paintings, cinematic landscapes, objects and architecture. The density of the northern light compensates the characteristic nudity of their works; emptiness does not have a place in the Nordic reality.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is one of the clinical manifestations of coronary artery disease. The Strategy of Registry of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ERICO) is a cohort of individuals treated at the Hospital Universitário da Universidade de São Paulo due to an ACS event. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency of use and time-to-treatment for drugs commonly used in ACS treatment, in the ERICO study. METHODS: We included 746 ERICO participants enrolled from February 2009 to December 2012 who either sought the hospital directly (N = 656) or were initially referred to primary care units (N = 90). We evaluated the time-to-treatment with aspirin, clopidogrel, heparins and thrombolytics, according to the unit of first contact, using logistic regression models. Subsequently, the medical records of 563 (85.8%) participants who came directly to the hospital were reviewed and the frequency of aspirin, clopidogrel, heparins, beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) / angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB), statins, nitrates and morphine use. The reasons for non-administration and/or withdrawal of aspirin, clopidogrel, heparins, beta-blockers and ACEI / BRA were obtained from medical records. RESULTS: We observed that 93.6%, 86.1% and 86.5% of study participants received aspirin, clopidogrel and heparin, respectively, during the first 24 hours of hospitalization. In adjusted models, individuals referred from primary care units were more likely to receive aspirin within the first 3 hours (odds ratio [OR]: 3.65, 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 2.04-6.52), But less likely to receive heparin (OR: 0.32; 95%CI: 0.16-0.62) or clopidogrel (OR: 0.49; 95%CI: 0.29-0.83) in the same time interval. However, 24.4% of the participants referred from primary care units did not receive aspirin before transfer to hospital. Non-administration of aspirin, clopidogrel, and heparin during hospitalization was a rare event, and generally linked to an increased risk of bleeding. Beta-blockers were not prescribed for 15.8% of the participants, and the main cause was decompensated heart failure. ACEI / ARB were not prescribed for 16.7%, and the main cause was shock or hypotension. However, the causes of non-administration (64.0%) and withdrawal (26.4%) were often not described. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, participants who first went to primary care units were more likely to receive early treatment with aspirin compared to those who went directly to the hospital. However, a significant proportion did not receive the drug prior to the transfer, indicating room for potential improvements in care. The frequency of medication use in the ERICO study was generally equal to or greater than those described in other studies. Failure to properly register the reasons for drug non-administration and treatment withdrawal was a frequent finding, pointing to an opportunity for improved care

Abstract:
This thesis explores the cultural history of microfilm and microphotography during the period 1900–1970, thus contributing to the broader field of research on the history of 20th century information management in the era before digital technology. The aim is to study how microfilm repeatedly, in various contexts and over time, was described and perceived as a new medium. To this end the book examines and analyses the plans, dreams and visionary prognostics put forth by various historical actors with an interest in microfilm – using case studies situated at different junctures and periods (1904–1910, 1937, 1940–1952, 1950–1970), while also ranging geographically from the United States to Europe and Sweden. From a theoretical and methodological point of view the thesis seeks to understand the historical formation of microfilm by developing the notions of configuration and reconfiguration, employing a perspective which emphasizes the continuous ontological interplay and interdependence of materiality and discourse in the formation of media. Thus, at the empirical level, the analysis takes into account realized technological materialities as well as unrealized imaginary articulations, dreams and expectations integral to the configuration of microfilm within a broader culture of paperwork. As a result of this approach the study draws on scientific texts and articles in journals, as well as newspaper reports, commercial messages, ads, handbooks and various archival documents. The analysis reveals a close relationship between microfilm and experiences of entropy connected to information systems based on paper and paperwork. It is argued that, within the dreams and plans that are studied, the most important function of microfilm was to regulate noise, decay and disorder associated with the materiality of paper – through ordering, operating on and modifying the capacities of paper media. It is also noted that microfilm was perceived and articulated as a new medium over a long period of time, even though very little changed at the technological level. From a historiographical point of view, it is thus argued, microfilm can be characterized as a simultaneously continuous and discontinuous phenomenon, taking part in a history that unfolded through repetitions, returns and non-linear steps rather than along an uninterrupted, linear path.

Abstract:
Echoes from Africa to the world and from the world to Africa seem to tell a single story: Africa fails.Especially political Africa. Among those dashing to help, the commitment of the Church catholic is to be praised but also critically engaged. Can anyone help Africa to modernize by ignoring that in Africa, modernity meant colonization? Then, a question: what is the Church doing, and what can it do qua Church, for Africa? This confronts us with a situation, an action and a critical question. This work, focusing on Togo taken as mirror to the continent, aims at challenging the way the situation is described, at elaborating an answer to the question in hoping to shed a light on the way the action is understood and undertaken. For such an end, it draws on post-colonial studies and on the Cambridge theological movement called Radical Orthodoxy, through the works of J. Milbank and W. Cavanaugh

Abstract:

This study investigates lexical cohesive devices in the children picture books of Eric Carle. Specifically, nine English version children picture books written by Eric Carle were selected from the best sellers on the online bookshop of Amazon.com. In order to understand the discourse nature of children picture books written by Eric Carle, this thesis investigated how the frequency of lexical cohesions occurred in selected nine children picture books written by Eric Carle. There are two main findings. First, the finding showed that repetition occurred most frequently and the selected books are not lexically dense. Secondly, both repetition and synonymy can be found in the selected nine children books while hyponymy and meronymy were not used in The Mixed-Up Chameleon.

The aim of this paper it to observe different approaches to human beings. Two major points of view will be that of Karl Marx and of Sigmund Freud. In which apects are their deffinitions of human being, behavior and thinking processes different and in which are they similar? How are their ideas transferred in the work of oher authors and where does it lead? Is it possible to find similar streams in the work of their followers? These are the two major questions that this paper will try to answer. Abstract:
The main subject of the doctoral thesis entitled Think and Love. A Happy Marriage in Self-Help Books in the Second Half of the 20. Century is the vision of a successful intimate relationship in the therapeutic narrative in the United States and in Poland in the second half of the 20. century. In four chapters four phenomena are described that create and influence this narrative. In the first chapter couple therapy is described: a therapeutic practice which focuses not on the inner psychological reality but on the relationship between two people which is given its own ontological identity. The beginnings of couple therapy as well as its main theoreticians from the 1960s and 70s are mentioned. The history of the discipline is set on the background of the transformations of customs and images of the perfect family from the 1950s, then challenged by counterculture movements in the following decades. In the second chapter four self-help books for married couples (by A. Beck, J. Gray, J. Gottman and R. Sternberg) are analys ed. Before that, the history of American self-help literature is proposed. Phenomena such as Benjamin Franklin’s work ethics, Horatio Alger’s „rags to riches” narrative, New Thought and Human Potential movements are described. Finally, Philip Rieff’s concept of „the psychological man” is presented and notions such as „psychobabble” and „pop-psychology” are analysed. The third chapter is dedicated to the Polish school of sexology (on the background of Western research), including Kazimierz Imieli ń ski’s work as well as popular self-help books from the 1960s and 1970s by Miko ł aj Kozakiewicz and Michalina Wis ł ocka. The vision of a happy marriage which is there constructed, is confronted with the reality of Polish marriages in these decades. The difference between the Polish expert discourse of the time and the American narrative is drawn. Finally, the fourth chapter talks about the beginnings of psychotherapy practice in Poland as well as the emerging therapy culture, especially after the political breaktrough of 1989. The history of the most important therapeutic institutions and most influential psychologists is presented. The psychological columns in womens’ magazines („Twój Styl”, „Zwierciad ł o”, „Pani”) are then interpreted. The psychological / therapeutic discourse is seen as an important element of the Polish immagination in the times of transformation, since it is presented in the press as a part of the „Western way of life”. Characteristic features of this discourse as well as its transformations are described (such as rationalization, the striving for legitimization and the need to abolish myths). The activity of experts is seen as a didactic project, which aims to teach Poles how to talk about their feelings, while often ignoring historical processes and fundamental socio-economic changes.
Tematem pracy doktorskiej jest wizja szczęśliwego małżeństwa (i intymnego związku miłosnego) w dyskursie poradnikowym w Stanach Zjednoczonych i w Polsce w drugiej połowie XX wieku. W drugim rozdziale analizie poddane zostają cztery poradniki psychologiczne dla małżeństw (autorstwa A. Becka, J. Graya, J. Gottmana i R. Sternberga), wpierw jednak następuje szkic historyczny dotyczący rozwoju literatury samopomocowej (self-help literature) w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Opisane zostają m.in. takie zjawiska jak filozofia "pracy nad sobą " Benjamina Franklina, zaczerpnięta z powieści Horatio Algera narracja "od pucybuta do milionera", Ruch Nowej Myśli (tu wspomniane zostają m.in. poradniki N.V.
