He, Jizhou, Jincan Chen, and Chih Wu. "Optimization on the Performance Characteristics of a Magnetic Ericsson Refrigeration Cycle Affected by Multi-Irreversibilities." Journal of Energy Resources Technology 125, no. 4 (November 18, 2003): 318–24. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/1.1616037.

Full text
Abstract:
A general irreversible cycle model of a magnetic Ericsson refrigerator is established. The irreversibilities in the cycle model result from the finite-rate heat transfer between the working substance and the external heat reservoirs, the inherent regenerative loss, the additional regenerative loss due to thermal resistances, and the heat leak loss between the external heat reservoirs. The cycle model is used to optimize the performance of the magnetic Ericsson refrigeration cycle. The fundamental optimum relation between the cooling rate and the coefficient of performance of the cycle is derived. The maximum coefficient of performance, maximum cooling rate and other relevant important parameters are calculated. The optimal operating region of the cycle is determined. The results obtained here are very general and will be helpful for the optimal design and operation of the magnetic Ericsson refrigerators.

Abstract:
We sought to replicate Ericsson, Krampe & Tesch-Römer's (Ericsson, Krampe & Tesch-Römer 1993 Psychol. Rev. 100 , 363–406) seminal study on deliberate practice. Ericsson et al . found that differences in retrospective estimates of accumulated amounts of deliberate practice corresponded to each skill level of student violinists. They concluded, ‘individual differences in ultimate performance can largely be accounted for by differential amounts of past and current levels of practice’ (p. 392). We reproduced the methodology with notable exceptions, namely (i) employing a double-blind procedure, (ii) conducting analyses better suited to the study design, and (iii) testing previously unanswered questions about teacher-designed practice—that is, we examined the way Ericsson et al . operationalized deliberate practice (practice alone), and their theoretical but previously unmeasured definition of deliberate practice (teacher-designed practice), and compared them. We did not replicate the core finding that accumulated amounts of deliberate practice corresponded to each skill level. Overall, the size of the effect was substantial, but considerably smaller than the original study's effect size. Teacher-designed practice was perceived as less relevant to improving performance on the violin than practice alone. Further, amount of teacher-designed practice did not account for more variance in performance than amount of practice alone. Implications for the deliberate practice theory are discussed.

Three power producing cycles have been so far known that include two isothermal processes, namely, Carnot, Stirling, and Ericsson. It is well known that the efficiency of the Carnot cycle represented by is independent of its working fluid. Using fundamental relationships between thermodynamic properties including Maxwell's relationships, this paper shows in a closed form that the Ericsson and the Stirling cycles also possess the Carnot efficiency irrespective of the nature of the working gas.

Abstract:
PurposeThis invited article explores current developments in supply chain risk management (SCRM) practices by revisiting the classical case of Ericsson (Norrman and Jansson, 2004) after 15 years, and updating its case description and analysis of its organizational structure, processes and tools for SCRM.Design/methodology/approachAn exploratory case study is conducted with a longitudinal focus, aiming to understand both proactive and reactive SCRM practices using a holistic perspective of a real-life example.FindingsThe study demonstrates how Ericsson's SCRM practices have developed, indicating that improved functional capabilities are increasingly combined across silos and leveraged by formalized learning processes. Important enablers are IT capabilities, a fine-grained and cross-functional organization, and a focus on monitoring and compliance. Major developments in SCRM are often triggered by incidents, but also by requirements from external stakeholders and new corporate leaders actively focusing on SCRM and related activities.Research limitations/implicationsRelevant areas for future research are proposed, thereby increasing the knowledge of how companies can develop SCRM practices and capabilities further.Practical implicationsBeing one of few in-depth holistic case studies of SCRM, decision-makers can learn about many practices and tools. Of special interest is the detailed description of how Ericsson reactively responded to the Fukushima incident (2011), and how it proactively engaged in monitoring and assessment activities. It is also exemplified how SCRM practices could continuously be developed to make them “stick” to the organization, even in stable times.Originality/valueThis is one of the first case studies to delve deeper into the development of SCRM practices through taking a longitudinal approach.

Full text
Abstract:
Hambrick i Meinz, 2011).

Abstract:
While 5G rollouts are by no means complete, they are well under way. For many in the industry, efforts to utilize 5G to go beyond simply providing “fast connectivity” are already in focus. Our articles explore how the industry is already looking forward to what comes next, asking how to: make gains in sustainability; utilize technologies like IoT and edge to maximize efficiencies and push exciting use cases; use 5G as a springboard for innovation; truly capture the opportunities for all consumers and enterprises in all regions; and, with all this growing potential, how to keep 5G safe and secure. 5G technologies play a key role in modernization, providing multiples of capacity while becoming more energy efficient. Innovative network technologies enable service providers to introduce new services that in turn support societies and enterprises to reduce their carbon emission foot-print. In this edition, we share some examples of how 4G and 5G technologies make it possible to unleash the power of IoT connectivity to enhance both enterprises’ business performance and sustainability. The transition to cellular LPWA and 4G/5G technologies makes it possible to unleash the power of IoT connectivity. We explore the positive impact of these technologies in areas such as business efficiency and sustainability. Deploying edge computing is key to enabling latency-critical and bandwidth-hungry 5G use cases, and can cost less than onpremise IT resource for an enterprise. This capability represents huge untapped growth potential for service providers. As 5G grows in prominence due to advancing digitalization, networks become a more enticing target for threat actors. We explore the motivators, opportunities and capabilities of threat actors, and how to protect 5G networks.

Abstract:
Resilient networks are the foundation for continued digitalization of societies and industries. Continuous network modernization and coverage build-out has led to several hundred million people becoming new mobile broadband subscribers every year. 5G is scaling faster than any previous mobile generation and we expect 5G subscriptions to reach 1 billion by the end of 2022. In several regions, deployment of 5G standalone networks is also picking up pace, as communications service providers prepare for innovation to address the business opportunities beyond enhanced mobile broadband. A solid digital network infrastructure underpins enterprises’ digital transformation plans, and their new capabilities can be turned into new customer services. As exemplified in this edition, service providers are looking to expand out of pure connectivity into service enablement platforms. Global mobile network data traffic has doubled in the last two years, driven by continuing growth in smartphone usage, mobile broadband and now the digitalization of societies and industries. But traffic is not the only thing that grows. The ongoing war in Europe, as well as increased geopolitical tension in the world, leads to a range of global threats – economic as well as social – that must be navigated. And in our field of networking, the threat landscape calls for constant diligence in keeping ahead with security. You can read more about security in this edition. Managing the continued strong traffic growth while reducing energy consumption is also a top priority. Older technologies are being replaced by continuous build-out of 4G and 5G networks, substantially improving network performance and energy efficiency with each generation. 5G technologies play a key role in modernization, providing multiples of capacity while becoming more energy efficient. Innovative network technologies enable service providers to introduce new services that in turn support societies and enterprises to reduce their carbon emission footprint. In this edition, we share some examples of how 4G and 5G technologies make it possible to unleash the power of IoT connectivity to enhance both enterprises’ business performance and sustainability.

Abstract Diet plays a role in modifying cancer risk. This study from Ericsson and colleagues provides new evidence suggesting that avocado intake could aid in cancer prevention. However, these effects were observed only in men, pointing to intriguing key differences by sex. Also, associations were only seen for some (colorectal, lung, and bladder cancers), but not all cancer types. Still, the number of avocado servings and ways to eat avocado to obtain these benefits remain to be determined. This brief commentary discusses the study and provides an opinion on the proposed role of avocados in reducing cancer risk. See related article by Ericsson et al., p. 211

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate and evaluate the prioritization and categorization method (PCM), which facilitates the active participation of process stakeholders (managers, owners, customers) in process assessments. Stakeholders evaluate processes in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and relevance against certain contextual business and industry factors. This collective evaluation serves as a foundation for the management decision-making process regarding process improvement and redesign. Design/methodology/approach The PCM is examined based on a case study at Ericsson. In total, 55 stakeholders, representing different organizational levels and functions, assessed eight core processes. Follow-up interviews and feedback after the evaluation sessions were collected for triangulation purpose. Findings The PCM helps Ericsson evaluate its processes within business context and industry environments. The results show that, to realize seamless end-to-end processes in the eight assessed processes, Ericsson has to make a greater effort to improve its process structures, governance and culture for fulfilling the needs of future business. Ericsson Steering Group is satisfied with the insights provided and has decided to train more stakeholders to use PCM. Research limitations/implications This research is based on a single case within a specific organizational setting. The results may not be necessary generalizable to other business and industry settings. Organizations need to configure PCM in consideration of their own processes and business contingencies to explore and fulfil their process improvement purposes. Originality/value This paper presents a new context-aware, easy-to-use and holistic method for business process management (BPM), the PCM. The method requires the active engagement of stakeholders, it focusses on developing dynamic BPM capabilities and fully embeds organizational contingencies and contextual factors in the decision-making regarding BPM. This paper contributes a novel method to explorative BPM.

Abstract:
A special configuration of Stirling liquid piston engine, known as Fluidyne, was invented fifty years ago and many works have been devoted to it since then. A variant of the Fluidyne is presented, in which the two ends of the U-tube containing the liquid piston are closed by valves, so that the system obtained belongs to the family of Ericsson engines rather than to the family of Stirling engines. This type of low-tech system is considered to be suitable for the production of low-power mechanical energy (up to 1… kW), for example for pumping or to drive an electric generator from renewable primary energy conversion (solar, biomass, hot gaseous effluents, ). In the system considered, the working fluid of the Ericsson engine is air in open cycle. Different configurations are proposed for the extraction of mechanical energy. The preliminary design of a first demonstrator is presented. Results of a dynamic “intracycle” model of this liquid piston Ericsson engine are presented in the case of the coupling with a linear generator. The model allows to determine the frequency of operation of the engine, the instantaneous liquid piston position and the instantaneous working gas properties, so that the global performance of the engine can be predicted.

The paper describes the development of the organisation over the years — its origins, the abundant growth, the many organisational and technological metamorphoses it underwent and the eventual downfall. The purpose of this paper is to search for patterns in the dynamics of internationally operating R&D organisations and to clarify the peculiarities in the innovation journey of this Ericsson design centre. In particular, we focus on the actions of local R&D managers, the design of organisational forms, the relation between technology and organisation, and the relation between local design centres and their headquarters.

Abstract:
This study used participants from the martial arts (karate) to examine the influence of context in the acquisition of novel motor sequences and the applicability of Ericsson, Krampe, and Tesch-Romer's (1993) theory of deliberate practice in this athletic domain. The presence of context did not benefit recall performance for the experts. The performance of the novice group was hindered by the presence of context. Evaluation of the role of deliberate practice in expert performance was assessed through retrospective questionnaires. The findings related to the relationship between relevance and effort, and relevance and enjoyment diverged from Ericsson et al.'s (1993) definition of deliberate practice, suggesting that adaptations should be made if it is to be considered general theory of expertise.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a critical review of the different aspects concerning magnetic refrigeration systems, and performs a detailed analysis of thermodynamic cycles, using mathematical models found in the literature. Langevin’s statistical mechanical theory faithfully describes the physical operation of a refrigeration machine working according to a magnetic Ericsson cycle. Results of mathematical and real experimental models are compared to deduce which best describes the Ericsson cycle. The theoretical data are not perfectly consistent with the experimental data; there is a maximum deviation of about 30%. Numerical and experimental data confirm that very high Coefficient of Performance (COP) values of more than 20 can be achieved. The analysis of the Brayton cycle consisted of finding the mathematical model that considers the irreversibility of these machines. Starting from the thermodynamic properties of magnetocaloric materials based on statistical mechanics, the efficiency of an irreversible Brayton regenerative magnetic refrigeration cycle is studied. Considering the irreversibility in adiabatic transformations, the lower limit of the optimal ratio of two magnetic fields is determined, obtaining a valid optimization criterion for these machines operating according to a Brayton cycle. The results show that the Ericsson cycle achieves a higher Coefficient of Performance than the Brayton cycle, which has a higher cooling capacity as it operates with a larger temperature difference between the magnetocaloric material and source.

Abstract:
A hybrid gas turbine cycle is proposed based on the conventional Brayton cycle for the high-temperature heat addition process while adopting the Ericsson cycle for the low-temperature heat rejection process. It thus incorporates the thermodynamic advantages of a combined gas and steam turbine (CCGT) cycle without the irrevcrsibilities of the boiler and the ancillarics of the steam turbine/condenser plant. Thermodynamic analysis shows that a similar overall thermal efficiency as current CCGT plant (i.e. 0.54) would be achieved at a maximum gas temperature of 1311 °C if polytropic efficiencies of 0.90 for compression and expansion could be realized and if a maximum temperature of 77 °C was obtained during isothermal compression in the bottoming Ericsson cycle. A novel method of achieving multistage isothermal compression using heat pipe technology is proposed.

Abstract:
Using the finite-time thermodynamics, based on the thermodynamics properties of ferroelectric materials and a linear heat-transfer law, the inherent regenerative losses in the cycle are calculated and the fundamental optimum relations and other relevant performance parameters are determined. The thermoeconomic optimization for ferroelectric Ericsson refrigeration-cycle is reported. The cooling load for the refrigerator per unit total cost is proposed as objective functions for the optimization. The optimum performance parameters which maximize the objective functions are investigated. Since the optimization technique consists of both investment and energy consumption costs, the obtained results are more general and realistic.

Abstract:
The present study focuses on the discursively performed leadership during periods of transition and change in the context of competition-driven organizations. It explores discourses of leadership in a diachronic perspective, scrutinising the ways in which they construct and re-construct corporate and culture-related identities. Drawing on interviews and press conferences with several CEOs of two multinational companies, Nokia (Finland) and Ericsson (Sweden), an investigation of the challenges of leadership branding was carried out in a discourse-analytical and pragma-rhetorical perspective. Particular emphasis has been placed on systematically comparing the presentations in letters to employees by the CEOs of Nokia and Ericsson. This comparative study provides evidence for the internal and external challenges underlying leadership discursive construction and re-construction aimed at ensuring a consistent interconnectedness between a company’s values and its competitive qualities.

Abstract:
Two studies tested the theory of deliberate practice (Ericsson, Krampe, & Tesch-Romer, 1993) and contrasted results with the sport commitment model (Scanlan, Carpenter, Schmidt, Simons, & Keeler, 1993a, 1993b). In Part I, international, national, and provincial soccer and field hockey players recalled the amount of time they spent in individual and team practice, sport-related activities, and everyday activities at the start of their career and every 3 years since. In Part II, these activities were rated in terms of their relevance for improving performance, effort and concentration required, and enjoyment. A monotonic relationship between accumulated individual plus team practice and skill level was found. In contrast with Ericsson et al.’s (1993) findings for musicians, relevant activities were also enjoyable, while concentration became a separate dimension from effort. The viability of a generalized theory of expertise is discussed.
