Abstract:
For years, 4-H has struggled with the complex issue of membership retention, especially among older youth. However, little research has been done concerning why 4-H members choose to leave the program. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the reasons for leaving 4-H with the ultimate goal of improving retention of older members. Specific objectives of the study were to (a) explore reasons why youth chose not to re-enroll in the program, (b) identify barriers to participation, and (c) determine what conditions would facilitate participation. Abstract Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are ubiquitous in the environment. We hypothesized that early life exposure to PAHs may have particular importance in the etiology of breast cancer. We conducted a population-based, case-control study of ambient exposure to PAHs in early life in relation to the risk of breast cancer. Total suspended particulates (TSP), a measure of ambient air pollution, was used as a proxy for PAHs exposure. Cases (n = 1,166) were women with histologically confirmed, primary, incident breast cancer. Controls (n = 2,105) were frequency matched by age, race, and c

Abstract Introduction: Whether social determinants of health (SDOH) affect US breast and colon cancer screening rates remains unclear. That said, in 2011 the CDC began recording a social vulnerability index (SVI) for all US counties. SVI was designed to capture four SDOH: socioeconomic status (SES), household composition and disability, minority status and language, and housing type and transportation. This retrospective study sought to determine the association of county-level SVI with breast and colon cancer screening rates. Methods: We used publicly available data from the CDC 2018 SVI data

Childhood homicide during 1972 to 1984 constituted 7.6% of the total homicides in Erie County, NY, a relatively higher percentage than that for the United States as a whole. The age-specific rate for black children less than four years of age was 17.9 per 100,000, a rate higher than that for Northern Ireland. Areas in which childhood homicide occurred most frequently were characterized by poverty and unemployment. The most common cause of death was a blunt trauma. Most homicides occurred on a Saturday and during spring and fall. In most cases, the offender was the child's mother. Most homicide

This project recommends an appropriate land cover master plan for the lower portion of the west fork of Old Woman Creek. The project utilizes the various vegetative treatments, or measures available, to lessen storm water induced sediment concentration levels within the agricultural study site. The over riding design principle is that a return to a more native landscape through the addition of native-like plant species, en mass or as a hedgerow around agricultural fields, will improve the bio-filtering of sediment from runoff as it has in other locations. The resulting changes in the population age structure include an increase in the proportion of the population of working age. The benefits can last for decades but are ultimately transitory. The second dividend follows the first and refers to a rise in savings and investment in human and physical capital which raise
