Abstract:

Despite all differences, Lévinas, Adorno und Sartre agree in asserting the other, non-identical and individual as opposed to an identifying epistemological concept, that causes a reduction to general categories. However, while Lévinas basically imposes a ban on knowledge and invokes a ‚non-conceptual perception‘, Adorno tries to reconcile knowledge with a nonreductive attitude, i.e. ‚using concepts to go beyond concepts‘. In analogy to Adorno’s concept, Sartre develops the so-called ‚regressive-progressive method‘, that integrates the individual into its social context, instead of reducing it to that context. This approach can be regarded as a corrective to a universalistic moral position in the sense of Habermas, because it allows to consider the peculiar characteristics of individuals and groups. Furthermore, Sartre’s position is in agreement with Honneth’s attempt to reconcile knowledge and recognition.

Abstract:

Anhand der Frage, ob fiktionale Texte Wissen enthalten können, erörtert der Beitrag das Verhältnis von Kunst und Erkenntnis bzw. Ästhetik und Erkenntnistheorie. Der erste Teil erinnert an die traditionelle Bestimmung der Ästhetik durch Baumgarten. Als Theorie der unteren Erkenntnisvermögen und als Theorie der schönen Künste werden der Ästhetik zwei Aufgaben zugemutet: eine Beschreibung der unteren Erkenntnisvermögen und deren Ausbildung und Verbesserung. Durch die Auseinandersetzung mit ästhetischen Objekten im weitesten Sinne können wir etwas lernen, indem die sinnlichen Vermögen auf besondere Weise involviert und als Fähigkeiten verfeinert werden. Der zweite Teil des Beitrags macht deutlich, dass die Lektüre fiktionaler Texte das Wahrnehmungsvermögen verfeinert, außerdem die Fähigkeiten der Aufmerksamkeit, Vorstellungskraft und Phantasie bildet. Der dritte Teil diskutiert den Begriff des nicht-propositionalen Wissens in seiner Relevanz für fiktionale Literatur und Erkenntnistheorie. Guided by the question of whether fictional texts can contain knowledge, the article discusses the relationship between art and knowledge or aesthetics and epistemology. The first part recalls the traditional characterization of aesthetics by Baumgarten: as a theory of the lower cognitive faculties and as a theory of the fine arts, aesthetics is expected to perform two tasks. It has to describe the lower cognitive faculties and it has to train and to improve them. While engaging with aesthetic objects in the broadest sense, we can learn something by involving the sensual faculties in a special way and refining them as skills. The second part of the article argues that reading fictional texts improves the perceptive faculties, as well as the skills of attention and imagination. The third part discusses the notion of non-propositional knowledge and its relevance to fictional literature as well as epistemology.

Abstract:

In Husserlian scholarship it is common to characterize Husserl’s early analyses in the Philosophy of Arithmetic as an epistemology without a subject. The article questions this reading. First, I introduce the method used by Husserl in his analyses of the concept of number in the Philosophy of Arithmetic. Second, I outline Husserl’s critique of Kant’s conception of synthesis and contrast it with its phenomenological alternative, namely relation theory. Finally, I focus on the product of synthesis, that is, the number, and argue that even if Husserl’s early analyses of the concept of number contains a reference to the subject of synthesis, his theory cannot be regarded as psychologistic.

Abstract:

The article investigates and defends central elements of Quine’s naturalized epistemology. Davidson’s coherentist attacks on Quine’s empiricismare dismissed. The view is advocated that sensory experience plays an essential epistemic role, and that, therefore, the study of perception must be taken seriously in the theory of knowledge. The author rejects, however, Quine’s behavioristic conception of experience as stimulation of sensory receptors and instead argues for a richer conception, according to which an experience is a sensory state of things appearing in certain ways to us. Finally, it is shown that this standpoint allows us to acknowledge a given element in experience without falling victim to a myth.

Abstract:

Thomas geht davon aus, dass die Weisheit, gemäß der aristotelischen Definition, in der Erkenntnis der ersten Ursachen besteht. Nach Thomas ist die Theologie diese Weisheit, weil sie die Erkenntnis (Wissenschaft) über Gott als erste Ursache des ganzen Universums ist und zugleich die Erkenntnis über alles in Bezug auf Gott als ihren Ursprung und Ziel. Angenommen, dass für Thomas die Theologie die Weisheit ist, kann die logische Struktur seines Hauptwerkes Summa theologica anders wie gewöhnlich interpretiert werden und zwar, nicht nach dem neoplatonischen Schema: exitus—reditus, sondern als Realisation des Programms der Theologie als Weisheit.

Abstract:

In der deutschsprachigen Diskussion um methodologische Standards der Soziologie wird von Seiten »erklärender Soziologen« immer wieder auf das Ziel kumulativer Erkenntnis verwiesen, aber kein diesbezüglicher Ansatz angeboten. Hier soll entgegen deren typisch instrumentalistischer Position eine realistische Version kumulativer Erkenntnis in kritisch-rationaler Tradition skizziert werden. Es werden fünf Stufen der Wahrheitsannäherung inklusive handlungstheoretischer Illustration unterschieden sowie die für die verschiedenen Stufen möglichen Eigenwerte theoretischer Erkenntnis. Der spezifisch kumulative Aspekt wird über die zunehmende Beibehaltung realistisch zu interpretierender Bestandteile von Theorien modelliert. Zwei Arten besonderer empirischer Vorhersageerfolge werden als Bedingung für eine realistische Fortschrittsinterpretation angegeben.
