Abstract:
Until now, there is no single assessment of the energy activity of mankind. The efficiency factor widely used in technology is not such, as it is not able to assess the prospects for the development of new fossil fuel deposits or the introduction of new types of energy production, especially renewable sources. EROEI (English energy returned on energy invested), or EROI (energy return on investment - the ratio of energy received to spent, energy profitability) in physics, economic and environmental energy - the ratio of the amount of usable (useful) energy received from a particular source energy (resource), to the amount of energy spent to obtain this energy resource. If for some resource the EROI is less than or equal to one, then such a resource turns into an “absorber” of energy and can no longer be used as a primary source of energy.” It should be noted that, strictly speaking, EROEI and EROI are not quite the same thing. If the first is the ratio of received and invested energy, then the second is the ratio of received energy and investments! But for some simplification, we will further consider these concepts identical. Moreover, which is very significant, when determining these coefficients, natural or natural sources of energy, such as insolation or the energy of fissile nuclides, are not taken into account. Only the energy costs associated with human activities are taken into account. At first glance, everything is correct and the EROI indicator can really be used as a kind of universal criterion. Based on the above analysis, it can be quite definitely said that EROEI is not a universal energy efficiency criterion, but can be used along with other well-known criteria and coefficients. EROEI should only be used in quantitative assessments of the efficiency of energy produced both directly from combustible fuels and in power plants. The calculation of EROEI faces certain difficulties, which are associated with the complexity of calculating the ancillary costs and losses of energy produced, as well as the costs associated with human labor. EROEI does not take into account the environmental component of the energy production process, which can be critical.

Abstract:
The energy return on energy invested, EROI or EROEI, is the ratio of the energy produced by a system to the energy expended to build, maintain, and finally dismantle the system. It is an important parameter for evaluating the efficiency of energy-producing technologies. In this paper, we examine the concept of EROEI from the general viewpoint of dynamic dissipative systems, providing insights on a wider range of applications. In general, natural resources can be assimilated to energy stocks characterized by a potential that can be exploited by creating intermediate stocks. This transformation is typical of dissipative systems and for the first time, we report that the Lotka–Volterra model, usually confined to the study of the biology of populations, can represent a powerful tool to estimate the EROEI of dissipative systems and, in particular, those systems subjected to depletion. This assessment is important to evaluate the ongoing energy transition since it provides us with a model for the decline of the EROEI in the exploitation of fossil fuels.

Tässä pilottitutkimuksessa Parkinsonin tautia sairastavien (n=35) vokaaliartikulaatiota tarkasteltiin vokaaliartikulaatioindeksillä (VAI), jonka tiedetään olevan tämän hetken tarkin ja luotettavin mittari puheen ymmärrettävyyden akustiseen tarkasteluun vieraissa kielissä. Tutkimuksemme perusteella VAI erotti ryhmätasolla Parkinsonin tautia sairastavat suomenkieliset puhujat neurologisesti terveistä puhujista (n=35). Vaikka tutkimusryhmien keskimääräinen ikä erosi toisistaan tilastollisesti merkitsevästi, voi tutkimuksen tuloksia hyödyntää jatkossa erilaisissa tutkimusasetelmissa. AbstractThis article attempts to explore the eroticism of Syeh Amongraga in Serat Centhini. The author uses Serat Centhini edited by Karkono Partokusumo (1985) and the latest contemporary novel by Elizabeth D. Inandiak with the title Centhini: Kekasih yang Tersembunyi (2018). This paper is a qualitative descriptive study using the perspective ofreviewing mystical theology and sexuality. The result suggests that Serat Centhini is a Javanese literary work containing erotic spirituality concerning the idea of “ngudi kasampurnaan” (seeking perfection), “manunggaling kawula lan Gusti” (integrating the servant with God), “pamongraga lan pamongrasa” (guardian body and guardian mysticfeeling), and erotic celebrations. The study of the Centhini opens a new horizon in contextual theology to view sexuality positively, especially in its encounter with the bible book Song of Songs. Kata-kata kunci: Hari Kedelapan, eskatologi, eklesiologi, person, eros, teologi publik. Abstract: This article discusses Theology of the Eighth Day as a sol- id theological source to promote the role of the church in the public sphere. The theology asserts that the Eighth Day as the day the Res- urrection of Christ is the beginning of a new world. Thus, this idea includes liturgy, eschatology, ecclesiology, creation, etc. Conversations in this paper also involve the concept of person and eros from Christos Yannaras. Yannaras emphasized thatperson is a relational constitution. Therefore, its presence can only realize in erotic movements. To underline the presence of the church in the public sphere, I argue that with the concepts of person and eros, The Eighth Day is God›s erotic motion to the world. Abstract:
Women are ‘perceived’. We speak often not just of ‘women’, but of ‘images’, ‘representations’, ‘reflections’ of women. Woman perceived is woman as art-object; and paradigmatic of this phenomenon is the myth of Pygmalion. This article will consider Ovid's version of the myth, the story of the artist who loved his own creation. I shall suggest that the story reflects on the eroto-artistic relationship between the poet and his puella explored in Latin love elegy. The Metamorphoses myth of the art-object which becomes a love-object mirrors the elegiac myth of love-object as art-object. The elegists represent the puella as both art and flesh. Pygmalion deconstructs the erotic realism of elegy and by its frankness about the power of the male artist discloses elegy's operations. It tells us how to read the puella — as a work of art; and the lover — as an artist obsessed with his own creation. Pygmalion reflects and exposes the self-absorption of elegy, the heroization of the lover, and the painted nature of the woman presented in eroto-elegiac texts, that is, the way in which she is to be seen as an art-object.

Abstract: This paper has the objective of explaining the gender struggle implied in the novels of Indonesian female authors of Ayu Utami generation. The gender struggle is female author’s “eternal enmity” towards male authors who, up till now, have greatly exploited woman’s body and force them to read their own body from the male point of view. Through erotic texts as the language of expression, female authors are able to write their body with their own point of view. Keywords: gender struggle, female authors, Ayu Utami generation

Abstract:
Aristaenetus' Love Letters(VI b.C.) testify not just the luck of epistolary genus in Justinianean age but, following these letters out, they are an example of how figures such Eros, Aphrodite and their court play a role in erotic literature field. This work analyzes every locus of the epistolary, in which these divinities appear, with particular attention on the continous resumptions of the previous literary tradition, from Homer to Musaeus; this work is divided in two chapters; the first one concerns the letters in which Gods, expecially Aphrodite, look after the main characters' beauty, the second one these in which Gods take actively part in love stories, above all Eros and Erotes.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the rape fantasies of a female undergraduate sample (N = 355) using a sexual fantasy checklist, a sexual fantasy log, a rape fantasy scenario presentation, and measures of personality. Results indicated that 62% of women have had a rape fantasy. For these women, the median rape fantasy frequency was about four times per year, with 14% of participants reporting that they had rape fantasies at least once a week. Further, rape fantasies exist on a continuum between erotic and aversive, with 9% completely aversive, 45% completely erotic, and 46% both erotic and aversive. Women who are more erotophilic, open to fantasy, and higher in self-esteem tended to have more frequent and erotic rape fantasies than other women. The major theories that have been proposed to explain why women have rape fantasies were tested. Results indicated that sexual blame avoidance and ovulation theories were not supported. Openness to sexuality, sexual desirability, and sympathetic activation theories received partial support.

Grenley, Devin. "Women’s Empowerment Through The Erotic." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/292.

Full text
Abstract:
First Semester: My thesis project is about showing women’s empowerment through their sexuality and comfort within their bodies own bodies. In our society women’s eroticism is seen as taboo and women are taught to turn away from the exploration of the erotic as a source of power within themselves. The erotic is often confused and misunderstood, it is an emotion and sense of empowerment that has been named by men and used against women. It’s now difficult to recognize that the erotic can even have a sense of empowerment for women, because strong women have been taught through our society to be viewed as dangerous. As Audre Lorde, a feminist writer states, “The erotic is a resource within each of us that lies in a deeply female and spiritual plane, firmly rooted in the power of our unexpressed or unrecognized feeling. In order to perpetuate itself, every oppression must corrupt or distort those various sources of power within the culture of the oppressed that can provide energy for change. For women, this has meant a suppression of the erotic as a considered source of power and information within our lives” (Lorde). A woman’s strength comes from her sexuality. Once women begin to believe in this concept, they will begin to require this deep powerful sensation from all aspects of their lives and will not settle for anything less. Women should embrace their sexuality and use it as a sense of strength, instead of falsely believing that they can only be strong by suppressing this eroticism. My project is based on a collaborative experience with the models about what their sexuality means to them, and how they can show this through a camera. These photographs are meant to be raw and real; they are representations of real women who have chosen to show the viewers their own sexuality in the way in which they see best fits their sexual personality and comfort with their own bodies. The writings from the models on the back of the photographs show their own struggles with their sexuality. It may make the viewers feel uncomfortable, but this is the point. We are working towards being able to live in a society where women can be sexual if they choose to be. This is still a working progress, and having to view photographs that make one uncomfortable, may be the first step in change. Second Semester: Visual Poetic Abstractions: A Close Photographic Rendering of The Female Body: My personal thesis project shifted after first semester ended. Second semester I decided to continue the question of the body, but step away from the cultural views and instead start to dissect the body in it’s natural form. The project is a close examination of the formalist aspects of the body, including a self-evaluation of what the body means to me. This project resulted in a series of close-up photographs that will help the viewer in seeing portions of the body in ways they have not before. Some photographs will even be unrecognizable as to what part of the body the photograph is representing. This is important because it leads the viewer to examine each photograph for what the beauty of the photo entails, and not for their previous cultural understandings of body parts prior to viewing. The idea behind the black and white photographs is so the viewer again dissects the photograph without the context of color – for example skin no longer can be recognized as skin when the color context is taken away from these photographs. Within this project, I have paid specific detail to the poetic formalist view of the body, dissecting different body parts to create awe and wonderment. The photographs are an anatomical view of the body in its most raw and poetic form.

Hunt, Amanda. "Investigating smara : an erotic dialectic." Thesis, McGill University, 2000. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=33290.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of smara. Smara is a Sanskrit word and means memory and desire. It has no equivalent in the English language and so the attempt to understand smara becomes both a linguistic and an ontological task.
The reader is introduced to the similarities and idiosyncrasies between Western and Indian notions of memory and desire and then invited into the search for the junction between memory and desire in Indian thought.
Analysis of anthropological and philosophical texts as well as a semantic mapping of Kalidasa's masterpiece entitled Sakuntala: The Ring of Recollection, reveals not only the co-existence of memory and desire in smara but also the notion of smara as a process.

Pilcher, Katy Elizabeth Mary. "Erotic dancing in night-time leisure venues : a sociological study of erotic dance performers and customers." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/56236/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the gender and sexual politics of erotic dance, through an ethnographic investigation of two leisure venues which provide erotic dance entertainment for women audiences in the UK. Using the research techniques of participant observation, qualitative interviews, visual methods, email interviews and internet research, this thesis examines the work roles of women and men dancers, and the interactions of women customers with dancers. In taking both a lesbian leisure venue and a male strip show for analysis, this thesis goes further than previous academic studies which often equate erotic dance with a male clientele base and women performers. The key findings of the thesis are related to three central themes. These are, firstly, the defining of both of the venues as a ‘women-only’ space by customers, and the ways in which this simultaneously both challenges and reproduces heteronormativity. Secondly, findings in both venues point to evidence of an erotic female ‘gaze’ being exercised by women customers. Yet I highlight how this is at times couched in problematic post-feminist conceptions of sexual agency, and further, how some customers articulated a critique of ‘gazing’ as objectifying erotic dancers. I argue that male dancers do not take on a ‘sex object’ role, and suggest that women dancers are able to exercise a gaze directed at women customers in some instances. The third key finding, evident in dancers’ accounts of their working experiences, suggests that their work practices are in many ways similar to concepts of work that are used to discuss service sector labour. I argue that the particular spaces in which dancers work is crucial to their capacity to exercise autonomy in their work role. Overall, the thesis develops a more complex analysis of participants’ engagement with erotic dance venues, highlighting the tensions around exercising agency in commercial sexual encounters.

Kanellou, M. "Erotic epigram : a study of motifs." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1387206/.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis forms the first book-length project to examine together Greek epigrams which date from the Hellenistic to the early Byzantine period within larger hermeneutic frames. It examines the life-cycle of four motifs, especially within the erotic subgenre, in order to reassess the genre’s inter-/ intra-generic dynamics and the factors that influenced its development through the centuries. The first chapter is devoted to epigrams where the lamp takes on various roles. Through their detailed analysis a fundamental narrative technique of the whole subgenre is disclosed: objects are employed to portray emotions. I also uncover the seriocomic tone of these poems. Their seriousness derives from the exploration of emotions in a plausible manner. However, the lover’s reaction can be judged as humorous by a detached reader. In the second chapter, I study epigrams that employ sea/ nautical metaphors in order to explore the intra-generic and intra-textual dynamics in the use of metaphorical language within the subgenre: the epigrammatists use metaphors to approach a topic from a variety of angles, while simultaneously securing narrative economy because metaphors can create multiple associations. Moreover, I explore through these metaphors the complex intra-generic dynamics of poetic rivalry and imitation. In the third chapter, I shed light on the development of the motif of the comparison of a woman with Aphrodite. I exemplify how a set of intra-generic, chronological, religious, and political factors influence its transformations in the work of different epigrammatists. Furthermore, I examine the goddess’ use as a metonymy and its semantic flexibility. In the fourth chapter, I study Eros’ representations in art and epigrams and unveil the ‘common codes’ existing in these two media for the crystallisation of emotions and ideas on love through the god’s portrayals. I analyse in detail three depictions of him, whose roots can be detected back to lyric poetry, in order to demonstrate how the epigrammatists handled and refreshed the inherited material. My research concludes with the study of the multidimensional use of the plural love gods (the Erotes). My thesis looks deep into the inner-workings of ancient Greek epigram, especially of its erotic subtype, and proves how sophisticated these poems are. It explores the complex combination of the elements of stability, adaptability, and change which played a key-role in the genre’s development, and moreover, significantly enriches our understanding of individual epigrams as it locates them within larger frames of interpretation.

Abstract:
Abstract Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) are normally based on yttria partially stabilised zirconia (YPSZ) coatings and are commonly used coatings in the high temperature, combustion region of gas turbines. TBC permit to increase the temperature of combustion, increasing the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine. Therefore, an engine equipped with TBC can produce a larger amount of energy over its lifetime. This increase in produced energy can be compared with the energy needed for the manufacturing and installation of TBC. The comparison can be performed in terms of the “energy return” (or “energy returned for energy invested”, EROI or EROEI). The qualitative analysis performed in the present study indicates that this return is large in comparison to that of other energy producing systems.

Abstract:
This study is an experimental determination of the energy return on investment (EROI) for algal biocrude production at a research facility at the University of Texas at Austin (UT). During the period of this assessment, algae were grown at several cultivation scales and processed using centrifugation for harvesting, electromechanical cell lysing, and lipid separation in an enhanced coalescence membrane. The separated algal lipids represent a biocrude product that could be refined into fuel. To determine the EROI, a second order analysis was conducted, which includes direct and indirect energy flows, but does not consider capital energy expenses. At the time that the data in this study was collected, the research program was focused on improving biomass and lipid productivity. As a result, some higher efficiency processing steps were replaced by lower efficiency ones to permit other experiments. Although the production process evaluated here was energy negative, the majority of the energy consumption resulted from non-optimized growth conditions. Therefore, the experimental results do not represent an expected typical case EROI for algal fuels, but rather outline the important parameters to consider in such an analysis. The results are the first known experimental energy balance for an integrated algal biocrude production facility. A Reduced Case is presented that speculates the energy use for a similar system in commercial-scale production. In addition, an analytical model that is populated with data that have been reported in the literature is presented. For the experiments, the Reduced Case, and Literature Model, the estimated EROI was 1.3 × 10−3, 0.13, and 0.57, respectively (refining energy requirements are not included in the experimental or Reduced Case EROI value). These results were dominated by growth inputs (96.59%, 94.15%, and 76.32% of the total energy requirement, respectively). For the experiments and Literature Model, lipid separation was the most energy intensive processing step (2.47% and 10.06%, respectively), followed by harvesting, refining, and then electromechanical cell lysing.
