Abstract:
This paper is a close reading of Raja Alem’s 2005 novel, Fatma: A Novel of Arabia. I argue that Alem depicts the erotic in ways similar to Audre Lorde’s definition – as a doorway to self-fulfillment and in honor of the “fullness” of the erotic’s depth of feelings. The Saudi Arabian writer employs the fantastic, which has been used by writers to express feminist politics, to give textual embodiment to the relationship between the erotic, self-actualization, and women’s empowerment, central to which is self-knowledge and self-discovery. Alem suggests that a deeper knowledge of the self can open women to unlimited possibilities of being and perception, including a closer relationship to the natural and the supernatural worlds. Alem thus presents a female mythology that creates an alternate reality and undermines the binaries of patriarchal thinking, such as the corporeal/transcendent, the human/nonhuman, man/woman, and nature/culture.

Abstract:
The conceptual images of erotic relations in Spanish. Analysis of some linguistic aspects of The Turkish passion by Antonio GalaIn this paper we try to systematize the contemporary Spanish expressions related to the erotic relations. The corpus is based on the novel by Antonio Gala The Turkish Passion (orig. La pasión turca) which, thanks to its plot with higly erotic content, constitutes an important source of linguistic material for our investigation. The analysis we propose reflects the methodology developed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson in their studies concerning the cognitive theory of metaphor. According to them, every concept consists of a source and a target domain and while expressing one idea we refer to another. Our analysis focuses on the reconstruction of the conceptual domains by means of which the Spanish writer describes the erotic relations. Although the book does not include all the erotic vocabulary and expressions which exist in contemporary Spanish, it enables us to observe some regularities in the use of metaphors in Spanish and reveal some sociocultural phenomena encoded in the linguistic material.

Wenusch, Monica. European Journal of Scandinavian Studies 49, no. 2 (2019): 317–36. http://dx.doi.org/10.1515/ejss-2019-0025.

Abstract:
Abstract In Jan Sonnergaard’s novel Frysende våde vejbaner (2015) the interconnection between travelling and eroticism constitutes a crucial element of the text’s structure. On his journey the novel’s main protagonist, Jesper, a middle-aged man, experiences liberation and relief from his everyday frustrations through erotic indulgence. The journey, the indulgence as well as the erotic love are capable of healing Jesper from his severe existential crisis. Nevertheless, Jesper is heading towards disaster, as his new life eventually turns out to be based on his girlfriend’s well-thought-out lies and her deception. Consequently, Jesper’s regained optimism falls apart again. From a narrative point-of-view the article focuses on, how the aspects of travelling and erotic love are interconnected. The obsersations regarding the implications of eroticism in the novel are primarily based on Plato’s discussions of eros (vs. logos), as presented by the Greek philosopher in his Symposion. Furthermore, the significance of the space defined by travel for the experience of eroticism is examined. A number of significant contrasts inherent in the novel (logos and eros, home and abroad, the private and the public space) is also made part of the close-reading-analysis.

Abstract:
This paper has the objective of explaining the gender struggle implied in the novels of Indonesian female authors of Ayu Utami generation. The gender struggle is female author’s “eternal enmity” towards male authors who, up till now, have greatly exploited woman’s body and force them to read their own body from the male point of view. Through erotic texts as the language of expression, female authors are able to write their body with their own point of view.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the role of Heracles as a mythical figure and god in Achilles Tatius’ Leucippe and Clitophon in order to show the ways in which his representation shapes a reading of the novel. This analysis argues that Heracles, a frequent presence in L&C, is depicted as an erotic figure over a heroic one and that he, therefore, embodies the interweaving of myth, narrative, and eroticism captured in the phrase mȳthoi erōtikoi and thematized throughout the novel. Furthermore, I suggest that the novel’s emphasis on erotic Heracles not only influences the reader’s understanding of Clitophon, but also contributes to the novel’s disruption of the genre’s expectations around heteroeroticism, monogamy, and marriage as the telos of the plot.

Abstract:
Cornul inorogului (The Unicorn’s Horn) by Bogdan Cretu imposes a new episteme of eros: the experiment that tests the body, which removes taboos, prejudices and shows how far one can compete with one’s own body. Intimacy is the only space in which the truth can be articulated, in which you can still be identical with yourself, contemporary with what you are in essence. The novel is also a journey in the history of erotic imaginary; it is a reinvention of the impediment and a rediscovery of erotic tension and intensity. The characters are projections of mythological consciousness, from the perspective of which art is always in full synchrony with life. Cornul inorogului (The Unicorn’s Horn) is a novel about eros, death, literature and the electrifying connections between them.

Abstract:

This paper discusses, from a psychoanalytic perspective, Sarah Waters’s novel Affinity (1999) which has played a crucial role in the consolidation of the neo-Victorian genre and, indeed, has become a touchstone for contemporary feminist fiction. Through Jessica Benjamin’s intersubjective theory it analyses Waters’s extraordinary re-presentation of women’s same-sex relationships, with particular focus on the dynamics of domination and submission which characterises the female couples in the novel. Benjamin's approach to the problem of domination gives valuable insight into the psychological structures of erotic hierarchy and, in turn, opens up for new ways to understand erotic desire and power dynamics between men and women, or between people of the same sex. In addition, an exploration of Affinity from an intersubjective perspective casts light onto how the novel transgresses both Victorian boundaries and those that persist in contemporary culture.

Abstract:
O objetivo desta tese é um estudo comparativo dos romances Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (1748-1749), do inglês John Cleland, e Margot La Ravaudeuse (1750), do francês Jean-Charles Fougeret de Monbron.
The aim of this dissertation is a comparative study of the novels Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (1748-1749), by John Cleland, and Margot la Ravaudeuse (1750), by Jean-Charles Fougeret de Monbron. Both novels are part of the body of erotic libertine narratives that flooded the emerging European book market during the Enlightenment and tell the memoirs of two young prostitutes respectively in London and Paris during the mid-18th-century. Assuming that the two narratives are organized according to a continuum which oscillates between sociability and individuality, the objective of this comparative analysis is to understand how these fundamental themes in 18th-century life as well as in the rise of the modern novel are formalized in the memoirs of Margot and Fanny through reccurring structural procedures found in libertine literature.

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the reading and interpretation of Osman Lins novel Avalovara based on a universal literary theme human love -, following the clues left by the author in interviews and analyzing especially its poetic configuration in the narrative. Taking into consideration the intense sexual component of the novel, it studies the various aspects of carnal love, from the political use of the body to its cosmogony and its mythical aspect. In order to do so, it first defines erotic literature to then position Avalovara in the twentieth century occidental tradition. Afterwards, it indicates its sources, which go back to the Bible and the Hindu tradition of the tantra. In uniting them, Lins creates a carnal and concrete love, capable of taking the lovers back to the original unity. In incorporating the symbolic geometry of tantra in the novels structure, Lins gives literature a magical power until then only seen in religious and mystical texts. Moreover, this dissertation, also based in narrative and novel theories and in a comparative approach, has above all a critical perspective: to show Avalovaras uniqueness in the tradition of erotic literature and its role in Brazilian literature, during the military dictatorship.

This thesis aims at investigating the presence of stereotypical characters in the work of Robbe-Grillet retrieved from the paralitterature. After this “exploration”, we reach the flowing conclusion: as a whole, the work of Robbe-Grillet is rooted in the stereotype. However, we will discover that this is not an apology for stereotype. A. The novels of the first two authors were breath fresh impetus in Lithuanian literature. The biggest contribution was of the novel “Balta drobulė” by A. Škėma and the period of 1956-1959 is associated with the novel “Balta drobulė” by A. Škėma. But M. Katiliškis with this novel stands out from other writers in Lithuanian literature because of its bold spread of eroticism. The topic of the thesis is the spread of eroticism in the novel “Miškais ateina ruduo” by M. Katiliškis. The selection of the topic was determined by the wish to reveal the attitude of the author and his contemporaries towards erotika, to see how each of them perceived and portrayed rather relevant subjects which seem unacceptable (taboo) subjects to Lithuanian nation. Abstract:
The title of my thesis is appropriately borrowed from a romance novel title, as my work proposes to mine the content, design and culture of romance novels and other erotic texts in order to excavate my own queer romance narrative. The body of work includes large-scale drawings of “stand-in boyfriends” stolen from romance novel covers, pieced fabric text works based on the titles of erotic texts, and a couch covered in erotic reading material. Drawing attention to the ubiquity of heterosexualized images and texts by deconstructing them, my work critically questions larger social constructions of normality and deviance, pleasure and disturbance, and high and low culture, as they pertain to ideas of love, romance and sexuality.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is the study of way tow African novelists describe the body ; Ahlam Mosteghanemi from Algéria and Calixthe Beyala from Cameroon. Our analisis traces the writings about the body to a symbolic structure where social discourses meet literary practices. The writings about the body, male or female, are studied from a perspective locked in the problematics of social and literary practices. More than a simple description, the body becomes an esthetic disguise through which the two novelists bypass censorship to tackle all their cultural taboos. Thus the sphere of the body combines discourses of subversion and reversal as well as negotiation and self censorship. What’s more, the body subject of literature bears in itself a tearing, a division and a suffering and seems to only understand and live its existence in pain and difficulty. This literal body that feels and suffers expresses a relationship to the world and to others and is part of a quest for self-affirmation
