Abstract:
In recent years, chemsex has emerged as both a subcultural vernacular and an orientation device for gay health promotion. Chemsex loosely describes gay men using certain drugs to extend and modulate group sex practice. In line with hegemonic responses to gay sexuality in general, most research has been grounded in problematisation, with discourse mostly returning to the question of containment. Drawing on porn, platform and critical drug studies, this article offers a corrective approach by defining a networked, cultural study of chemsex that is attuned to how chemsex erotics operate in many different (digital) intimate publics. Assembling algorithmic search suggestions, 41 videos and 450 comments, the article finds that the videos and comments found through the search function are vastly different than those found through user-generated playlists. Two competing publics form around the fear/desire-response to drug use: a cautious erotic of disinhibition and a counterpublic erotic of transgression.

144 undergraduate men viewed rock videos which contained content that was erotic-violent, erotic-nonviolent, nonerotic-violent, or nonerotic-nonviolent. Exposure to nonerotic-violent rock videos resulted in significantly higher Adversarial Sexual Beliefs scores and ratings of negative affect. These and other findings are discussed in terms of Bandura's concept of emotional incompatibility and the frustration-aggression model.

Abstract:
(1) Background: the relationship between erotic desire and personality factors is still relatively understudied. (2) Objective: to study the influence of the experience of desire, as well as impulsivity in the choice of videos, as the behavioral variable in the experimental trial. (2) Method: the sample consisted of 48 adult subjects, who took part in an experimental study that involved watching videos. (3) Results: the linear regression analysis revealed that the behavior involved in choosing videos is predicted by the sexual desire felt at the time of the trial, and not by stable personality factors, such as impulsivity or general self-report levels of sexual desire. (4) Conclusion: it is observed that the specific moment or situation and the behavior have a bigger impact on the erotic desire experienced at the time of the test than certain personality traits, as well as the previous and habitual levels of erotic desire of which an individual reports.

Abstract:
Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common problem in ageing men. Abnormalities in sexual arousal may contribute to its development, and to the failure of pharmacological therapies. However, there are few objective ways of assessing arousal. Sexual arousal has been shown to affect vibrotactile detection thresholds (VDT) in young, healthy men. The present study assessed the effects of sexual arousal on VDT in middle-aged men with and without ED in order to determine whether differences exist between the groups and if such differences may be useful in the evaluation of ED. Methods: VDT in the right index finger of 15 heterosexual men (mean age 74.3 ± 6.0 years) who had been formally diagnosed with ED (ED group) and 16 men (mean age 68.0 ± 6.6 years) who reported no sexual dysfunction in the past 6 months (erectile function (EF) group) were measured before and after watching erotic and control videos using a forced-choice, staircase method at frequencies of 30, 60 and 100 Hz. A mechanical stimulator was used to produce the vibratory stimulus. Results were analysed using repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: There was no significant effect of watching the erotic video on VDT in subjects in the ED group. In the EF group, VDT was significantly lower at 60 and 100 Hz after watching the erotic video. There was no change in VDT after watching the control video in either group. Conclusion: In response to sexual arousal, VDT in ageing men with normal erectile function decrease, whereas VDT in ageing men with ED remain unchanged.

Abstract: Relationship between sexual desire and sexual arousal (objective and subjective). The explanatory capacity of partner-focused dyadic sexual desire, dyadic sexual desire for an attractive person, and solitary sexual desire on the objective and subjective sexual arousal was examined. The sample was composed of 60 heterosexual young people (Mage = 22.46; SD = 3.20). First, participants completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Spanish version of the Sexual Desire Inventory. Then, an experimental task was performed consisting of the exposure to neutral and erotic content videos while registering the genital response. After the erotic video participants completed the Rating of Sexual Arousal Scale. In men, partner-focused sexual desire explained the objective sexual arousal (R2 = .31), and sexual desire for an attractive person explained the subjective sexual arousal (R2 = .23). In women, only partner-focused sexual desire explained objective sexual arousal (R2 = .17).Keywords: Sexual desire; objective sexual arousal; subjective sexual arousal; gender differences. Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe author explores how a viewer identifies with a decaying or disintegrating film or videotape, given that cinema is, in effect, dying even as we watch it. She discusses several experimental films and videos that take as their subject the disintegration of film, often erotic film. A psychoanalytic model of melancholia is posited for this identificatory process, but it is found to be unsatisfactory since it is premised on the maintenance of the ego's coherence. Instead a model of devotional melancholia is posited for how one might love a disappearing image.

Budi, Wibowo Sandy. Thesis, Paris 1, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA01H044/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The erosion of volcanic edifices is a series of geomorphological processes that occurs during, before or without eruption. This process also involves the term "lahar" which is characterized by dense mixtures of volcanic materials and water, rapidly flowing from a volcano with important spatio-temporal rheological changes. The erosion of volcanic edifices is still poorly understood, particularly because data collection in the field is difficult. However, lahars have caused at least 44,250 deaths from 1600 to 2010 of which 52%due to a single event in 1985 (Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia). This study proposes a multi-scalar approach to better understand the nature of the erosion of volcanic edifices, especially on lahar initiation process and dynamics. The eruption of the Merapi volcano(Indonesia) in 2010 was an opportunity to produce new data. The first part of this thesis focused on the lahar initiation process, was based on field data and laboratory experiments. The field work was intended to compare a volcanically disturbed watershed by the eruption of 2010 and an undisturbed watershed, by conducting in-situ observations and field instrumentation. In the laboratory, an experimental approach was performed using 8 different scenarios on a flume. The second part of the thesis related to the dynamics of two lahars in motion was conducted using coupling between video footage and seismic signal. Lahar deposits were also analyzed based on the chronology of the flows. Three years after the eruption of Merapi in 2010, the frequency of lahar occurrence decreased. However, juvenile ash fall deposits (volcanic ash) from another eruption of a nearby volcano (Kelud in East Java) in February 2014 resulted a significant increase of lahars occurrence. Lahars triggering process was also favored by a landslides occurring in the night of 6 to 7 December 2012, of which the deposit was connected to the thalweg. The dynamics of the two lahars were observed and filmed on 28 February and18 March 2014. Those lahars were divided into four phases: (1) hyperconcentrated flow, (2) the peak of debris flow, (3) lahar body, and (4) lahar tail. Video analysis and in-situ observation on active lahars allowed us to create detailed hydrographs indicating flow depth, velocity, discharge and the number of floated boulders. Lahar dynamics on different topography of the channel caused a very different seismic frequency. The formation of lahar deposits was correlated with the flow dynamics and required an in-situ observation for the validation of the interpretation

Abstract:
The book’s introduction teases out notions of openness, play, and erotics through discussions of video games. Video games train players to perceive a transnational, capitalist, and industrial form of empire, an “Open World Empire” wherein truth, openness, and digital transparency become elastic terms deployed within networks of forgetting and red herring scandals. When not seen as progressive, militaristic, or educational, gameplay emerges as a frivolous and queer practice that resists easy incorporation into state and neoliberal attitudes, as it appears as a self-indulgent waste of time. To account for the inescapability of Asian associations in games and to trace their transpacific imperial contexts, this introduction uses Asian American critique to see games as “Asiatic”: a style or form recognized as Asian-ish but that remains adaptable, fluid, and outside the authentic/inauthentic binary. The introduction discusses openness, erotic play, and the Asiatic through the history of video games and sexuality, as well as through the erotic methods developed by the critical theorists Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, and Eve Sedgwick, whose erotic practices emerged by comparing Western modes of thinking with those perceived to be common across Asia.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a conclusive stringing together of erotics, empire, and play by focusing on experiences of virtual tourism and conceiving of “the virtual other.” In video games, the virtual other places attention not onto this other but the inventor, the gazer, who has given up on obtaining a truthful and authentic access to the other and therefore sees them as virtual, somewhere between the real and the fake. Thinking through erotic methods found in the Asian confrontations of Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, and Eve Sedgwick, this chapter argues that the modes of queer erotics in interactive media entice players to reimagine the virtual other by stepping outside of imperial forms of mapping, digital surveillance, and war. It examines discourses of virtual otherness manifested in transpacific cartography within Google Maps, the Civilization game series, and the virtual-reality experience of Google Earth.

Abstract:
This chapter compares narratives of digital utopia against the turgid material process of factory labor in Asia. It begins by exploring how role-playing video games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Guild Wars 2, and others shore up evidence for digital utopia by enacting its values of liberal tolerance, freedom, and egalitarianism within a virtual realm. Yet played erotically, role playing offers new connections between the empire and its Asian provinces through playing a role, an act characteristic of the power positions of sexual role play (domination and subjugation). Using Michel Foucault’s theories of ars erotica and aphrodisia, this chapter argues that role playing bounds the gamelike, the queer, and the erotic, as all develop rule-based fantasy worlds with hierarchized avatars or roles. Role play can make explicit the transnational power differentials that function as digital utopia’s conditions of possibility.

Abstract:
If a vid is a vidder’s path through a text, how do we account for vids that combine multiple source texts into one work? This chapter focuses on multifandom vids, a genre that draws together video clips from several sources and that demonstrates ways of watching broadly across media texts. In this, multifandom vids are the record of more than the interpretation of a single text: they construct a fannish spectator’s ‘paths’ through genres, transmedia narratives, and even actors’ careers. Alongside critical work on found footage films, this chapter analyses the visual pleasures of vids and their relationship with audience fascinations of erotics, of spectacle, and of the pleasures offered by various genres.

Abstract:
The coda briefly reiterates the book’s two main arguments: (1) that games train us as citizens of the open world empire to quantify, to tabulate, to enjoy certainty, and to be well adjusted to violence, and (2) that the playful anarchy and erotic interactions within video games tease us, test our ethical boundaries, and help us understand how our pleasures relate to imperial violence and transpacific colonial histories. The coda supplements these themes by exploring how digital games help realize the violences of empire by wedding forms of technological domination with artistic practice, combining the scientific with the aesthetic, the logical with the obscure, and the procedural with the anarchic. Through the media theories of Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, and Eve Sedgwick, the coda argues that interactive media’s greatest potential is in offering the virtual as a space of eros and play, where gamers can derive queer intimacy and erotic pleasure from a seemingly cold and scientific apparatus.

Abstract:
The article provides an analysis of the term “prostitution” and its explanation as sexual service or sexual activity, and the legal regulation thereof. In author’s opinion, this term in criminal law is not sufficiently explicit and does not include clear criteria of prostitution in cases, when a person is accused of pimping, prostitution and other prostitution-related offences. The ambiguity of the terms makes it difficult to define these offences and to distinguish prostitution from erotic measures. Developments of this problem are considered in the article.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses transformation and duality in pornographic adaptations of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Hardcore adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde utilize the concept of dual selves to explore crises in queer sexual subjectivity and female sexual desire. Through an analysis of the gay comedies Heavy Equipment (1977) and Dr. Jerkoff and Mr. Hard (1997), and the Vivid Video hetero drama Jekyll and Hyde (1999), this chapter demonstrates the different ways gay and straight pornographers draw on the erotic pleasures of transformation as a way of exploring sexual crisis and a desire to break free from rigid and illusory formulations of identity and desire.

Abstract:
This chapter begins a new trio of chapters that turn from modes of exposure and ideological critique to ask how the atrocities and violent consequences of empire can be perceived through erotic and reparative engagements. Playing with Eve Sedgwick’s concepts of “texture” and “touch,”this chapter examines how games position player bodies into postures ready for expression, reaction, and reception. It juxtaposes the 2016 “Men Against Fire” episode of the television show Black Mirror and the strikingly similar 2008 video game Haze to compare the mode of visual techno-paranoia with the various postures of gameplay. It then explores how the game Alien: Isolation disrupts our “plunge” postures, transforming them into postures of vulnerability and dread, which enforce new understandings of the social anxieties stoked by political and social marginalizations.
