Abstract:
Morphological and taxonomic descriptions are given of an erpobdellid found to be a new species of Erpobdella Blainville, 1818 collected from Montezuma Well, Arizona, U.S.A. Mature individuals of Erpobdella montezuma sp. nov. do not exceed 71 mm total length, have three pairs of eyes with the second and third pairs smaller, and have dorsal paramedial stripes that are densely pigmented. On the dorsum and venter of each annulus lie 14–18 small white-tipped papillae containing the sensory organs. Six pairs of bunches of large testicular follicles (three to five in a bunch) are present. The morphol

Based on published records and original data from recent research, a list is presented of the leeches (Hirudinea) of Montenegro. It includes 29 species and subspecies in 13 genera and 5 families. Numerous new records are reported; Glossiphonia paludosa (Carena, 1824), Helobdella stagnalis (Linnaeus, 1758), Alboglossiphonis hyalina (O. F. A new genus, Motobdella, is recognized for Erpobdella montezuma Davies, Singhal, and Blinn, 1985. In addition, a new species for this genus, Motobdella sedonensis, is described. Morphological characters that include the presence of crop caeca, number and size of the eyes, arrangement of the eyes, arrangement of ovisacs, position of the gonopore, structure and size of the sensilla, coloration, and position of the anus distinguish this new genus from Erpobdella and Nephelopsis. DNA fingerprinting methods were used to examine the phylogenetic relationships of these genera and corroborated the mor

Despite apparent long-term geographic isolation, many invertebrates demonstrate little apparent morphological differentiation. To examine underlying genetic differentiation, eight erpobdellid leech populations from widely dispersed northern Arizona aquatic ecosystems were examined by means of amplified fragment length polymorphism genetic markers. These populations were primarily Erpobdella punctata, though two populations, Motobdella montezuma and Motobdella sedonensis, have been described as novel taxa. Data from 137 polymorphic loci were used to estimate genetic heterogeneity (θ), migration

ABSTRACTThe infectivity of Apatemon (Australapatemon) minor cercariae to 7 species of freshwater leech was examined under laboratory conditions. The leech species exposed to infection were; Erpobdella octoculata, Helobdella stagnalis, Glossiphonia heteroclita, Glossiphonia complanata, Hemiclepsis marginata, Piscicola geometra, and Theromyzon tessulatum. Five species were capable of acting as second intermediate hosts. Despite this broad specificity only Erpobdella octoculata and Helobdella stagnalis could be considered to show a high degree of compatibility with the parasite. In these 2 leech
