The article provides a description of heretofore neglected Finnish converb clauses, in which the passive simultaneous converb in -taessa/-täessä ‘when V-ed; while being V-ed’ is followed by a possessive suffix, most often the third-person possessive suffix -Vn. Based on data drawn from a body of modern written Finnish, and accompanied by the results obtained from a questionnaire survey with native speakers, the article claims that person-marked passive converb forms like lausuttaessaan ‘when uttered’ and perustettaessaan ‘when established’ need not be considered downright erroneous contaminati

Abstract:
This article investigates phenomena related to subject pronoun realization in the English interlanguage of Macedonian learners. Preliminary research indicates that learners tend to omit the subject pronoun in both referential and non-referential contexts. It can be presumed that such interlanguage features are due to crosslinguistic influence, given that Macedonian is a pro-drop language and makes no use of a dummy pronoun. The goal of this article is to determine the distribution of these phenomena at four proficiency levels: beginners (A1), elementary (A2), pre-intermediate (B1) and upper-in

AbstractTwo studies assess French-speaking children's comprehension of object filler–gap dependencies, with the goal of investigating whether the degree of specificity/set-restriction of the fronted object or the intervening subject modulates comprehension. We tease apart the predictions of various accounts attributing children's difficulties to (i) similarities between the object and the intervening subject (Gordonet al., 2001, 2004), particularly when both constituents share a structural +NP feature (Friedmannet al., 2009); (ii) increased processing cost determined by an operation of set-res

AbstractIndia and Bangladesh share a common history, and each has developed somewhat similarly since partition. However, while both countries now have relatively low murder rates, India has seen a decline in the rate of executions, while Bangladesh continues to impose death sentences and carry out executions at a higher rate. There have been challenges to the death penalty in India, restricting its use to exceptional cases. The same has not occurred in Bangladesh. Yet in both countries, systemic flaws in the criminal process are evident. This article draws on two original empirical research pr

Starting with his Commentary on the Sentences, in which the young Thomas Aquinas offers an explicit transposition of the philosophical intellection of separate substances into the Christian theological order, through to his later works where no mention of it is found, we will endeavour to present the exact nature of these borrowings and to evaluate their accuracy by questioning the conceptual coherence of Aquinas' gesture:

Statistical parsers are trained on treebanks that are composed of a few thousand sentences. In order to prevent data sparseness and computational complexity, such parsers make strong independence hypotheses on the decisions that are made to build a syntactic tree. These independence hypotheses yield a decomposition of the syntactic structures into small pieces, which in turn prevent the parser from adequately modeling many lexico-syntactic phenomena like selectional constraints and subcategorization frames. Additionally, treebanks are several orders of magnitude too small to observe many lexic
