Abstract:
The purposes of this research are to identify and analyze noun phrase’s translation errors and translation strategies from Korean to Indonesian that happened in an essay book titled Hidup Apa Adanya (2020), the Indonesian translation of Naneun Naro Salgiro Haetda (나는 나로 살기로 했다) (2016) by Suhyun Kim. This research is done using a descriptive-qualitative analysis method and two theories which are Translation Criticism (1988) by Peter Newmark and Translation Strategies (2016) by Zuchridin Suryawinata and Sugeng Hariyanto. The result indicates that firstly, there are six types of translation errors, which are (1) semantic error as the most found type, (2) omission, (3) word’s class and form’s change, (4) diction error, (5) word by word translation, and (6) cultural terms error. Secondly, there are nine strategies combinations such as (1) expansion and recognized translation, (2) synonymy and transposition, the most used combination, (3) synonymy, transposition, and addition, (4) synonymy, transposition, and borrowing, (5) modulation, transposition, and subtraction, (6) modulation, componential analysis, and addition, (7) borrowing and addition, (8) borrowing and transposition, and (9) borrowing, transposition, reduction, and expansion. The result also shows that the translator did not use cultural equivalent and descriptive equivalent strategies.

Wallich (1828–1849) published the work entitled “A numerical list of dried specimens of plants, in the East India Company’s Museum collected under the superintendence of Dr. Wallich of the Company’s botanic garden at Calcutta.” This work was lithographed from a manuscript written by N. Wallich and G. Bentham and has been often cited as “Wallich’s Catalogue.” This catalogue includes more than 8600 names, but lacks descriptions or references to the descriptions. As such, most of the names listed are nomina nuda and not validly published names (see Art. 38.2 Ex.1 of ICN, McNeill & al. 2012). Many of these nomina nuda were validated by Don (1831–1838).

Abstract:
Dahanukar et al. (2016a) proposed the nomen Walkerana for a new genus of amphibians, but shortly after (2016b) they replaced it by the new nomen Sallywalkerana, believing that their nomen Walkerana was preoccupied by a generic nomen of orthopterans. This was unjustified because the orthopteran nomen ‘Walkerella’ Otte & Perez-Gelabert, 2009a and its new replacement nomen ‘Walkerana’ Otte & Perez-Gelabert, 2009b were both nomina nuda. These recent examples of nomenclatural errors in generic nomenclature are just a few among many in recent zootaxonomic publications. This opportunity is taken to make some general methodological recommendations, in several domains (availability, homonymy, synonymy, neonymy, length and palatability of nomina), for the publication of new generic nomina in zootaxonomy. However, the absence of a comprehensive database and website providing all the relevant information necessary to establish the nomenclatural status of all zoological generic and subgeneric nomina is a brake on the efforts that can be made to avoid nomenclatural errors in zoological generic nomenclature. The international community of taxonomists should seek at establishing such a database and website.

Abstract:
In 2012, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature decided to change the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature and to provide a path to afford nomenclatural availability to new nomina and nomenclatural acts through their publication online, as long as the work containing them is preregistered on the website Zoobank under precise conditions. This 2012 Amendment soon raised a number of problems. First, it allows ‘admissible errors’ in this registration, which serves to encourage zootaxonomists, referees, editors and publishers not to pay close attention to this Amendment and to make inadmissible errors, which results in the unavailability of the new nomina and nomenclatural acts at stake. Another source of errors is the fact that Zoobank, contrary to initial plans, does not currently allow the preregistration of nomenclatural acts other than the establishment of new nomina. Other issues are the fuzzy or controversial distinctions made in this Amendment between ‘facsimiles of unavailable works’ and ‘available paper publications’ on one hand, and between ‘preliminary versions’ and ‘final versions’ of online publications on the other hand. Less than ten years after its promulgation, this Amendment has already contributed to the publication of hundreds of unavailable nomina and, which is perhaps worse, of nomina the nomenclatural status regarding availability of which is unclear, according to different interpretations of some terms or rules. The best solution to these problems would no doubt be the publication, as soon as possible, of a revised version of this Amendment addressing these problems, but in the meanwhile better attention given by authors, referees, editors and publishers to the details of this Amendment could limit the damages. Precise proposals are offered in this respect. A distinction is introduced here between two kinds of scientific publications, according to whether they contain nomenclatural acts or not. Those which do but which have first been published online without complying with the requirements of the 2012 Amendment, then later in a Code-compliant manner, may have to be cited as two distinct works, one (publication sensu lato) containing non-nomenclatural information and one (nomenclatural publication or promulgation) providing availability to some nomenclatural acts, which will be a source of confusion and misunderstanding. Proposals are also provided to cope with this new difficulty.

Abstract:
O texto também inclui simulações numéricas que validam e ilustram os resultados teóricos obtidos.<br>In dealing with rigid body three-dimensional rotational motion, one is inevitably led to face the fact that rotations are not vector quantities. They may, however, be treated as such when the angle of rotation is (very) small. In this context, i.e. the infinitesimal case analysis, the time derivatives of the rotation variables hold simple (sometimes vector-like) relationships to the components of the angular velocity vector. Conventionally, this distinctive characteristic cannot be associated with general moderate-to-large rotations. In this thesis, it is demonstrated that the kinematical differential relationship between the rotation vector and the angular velocity vector may, in fact, be expressed in terms of a mere time derivative, provided that the angle of rotation is kept within moderate bounds. The key to achieve such simplicity in the kinematical equation (linear attitude kinematics) within moderate angles of rotation is a judicious choice of the basis from which the time derivative is observed. This result is used to advantage within a generalised version of Euler’s motion equations to construct a simple control law, which nominally realises both linear attitude tracking and linear angular velocity tracking (nominal linear attitude state tracking), within moderate attitude tracking errors. The analytical work presented here is unique in the sense that it combines attitude kinematics, dynamics and control in such a way that nominal linearity between the attitude state error variables is achieved within moderate attitude tracking errors. For the first time, an attitude control law explicitly enables the nominal closed-loop attitude state error dynamics to be chosen and motivated by useful physical concepts from linear control theory. The text also includes numerical simulations that validate and illustrate the theoretically achieved results.

Abstract:
Taguchi defines quality loss as the loss imposed to the consumer for each unit of deviation from the target consumer requirements. In this thesis, the effects of inspection error and rework on quality loss are studied for a nominal-the-best type quality characteristic. The distribution of the quality characteristic in a production environment where there are inspection error and a separate rework facility is investigated. 100 % inspection policy is considered. After deriving the mean and variance of the resulting distribution of the quality characteristic, the true and simulated quality loss values for a number of scenarios are calculated. Furthermore, effects of deviation of the process mean from the target and variance of the rework are studied besides inspection error and process capability through a full factor factorial experimental design. Results are discussed for possible uses as quality improvement project selection criteria.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to make predictive simulations with Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models, i.e. simulations with a systematic treatment of model and data uncertainties and their propagation through a computational model to produce predictions of quantities of interest with quantified uncertainty. To do so, we make use of the robust Bayesian statistical framework. The first step toward our goal concerned obtaining estimates for the error in RANS simulations based on the Launder-Sharma k-e turbulence closure model, for a limited class of flows. In particular we searched for estimates grounded in uncertainties in the space of model closure coefficients, for wall-bounded flows at a variety of favourable and adverse pressure gradients. In order to estimate the spread of closure coefficients which reproduces these flows accurately, we performed 13 separate Bayesian calibrations. Each calibration was at a different pressure gradient, using measured boundary-layer velocity profiles, and a statistical model containing a multiplicative model inadequacy term in the solution space. The results are 13 joint posterior distributions over coefficients and hyper-parameters. To summarize this information we compute Highest Posterior-Density (HPD) intervals, and subsequently represent the total solution uncertainty with a probability box (p-box). This p-box represents both parameter variability across flows, and epistemic uncertainty within each calibration. A prediction of a new boundary-layer flow is made with uncertainty bars generated from this uncertainty information, and the resulting error estimate is shown to be consistent with measurement data. However, although consistent with the data, the obtained error estimates were very large. This is due to the fact that a p-box constitutes a unweighted prediction. To improve upon this, we developed another approach still based on variability in model closure coefficients across multiple flow scenarios, but also across multiple closure models. The variability is again estimated using Bayesian calibration against experimental data for each scenario, but now Bayesian Model-Scenario Averaging (BMSA) is used to collate the resulting posteriors in an unmeasured (prediction) scenario. Unlike the p-boxes, this is a weighted approach involving turbulence model probabilities which are determined from the calibration data. The methodology was applied to the class of turbulent boundary-layers subject to various pressure gradients. For all considered prediction scenarios the standard-deviation of the stochastic estimate is consistent with the measurement ground truth. The BMSA approach results in reasonable error bars, which can also be decomposed into separate contributions. However, to apply it to more complex topologies outside the class of boundary-layer flows, surrogate modelling techniques must be applied. The Simplex-Stochastic Collocation (SSC) method is a robust surrogate modelling technique used to propagate uncertain input distributions through a computer code. However, its use of the Delaunay triangulation can become prohibitively expensive for problems with dimensions higher than 5. We therefore investigated means to improve upon this bad scalability. In order to do so, we first proposed an alternative interpolation stencil technique based upon the Set-Covering problem, which resulted in a significant speed up when sampling the full-dimensional stochastic space. Secondly, we integrated the SSC method into the High-Dimensional Model-Reduction framework in order to avoid sampling high-dimensional spaces all together. Finally, with the use of our efficient surrogate modelling technique, we applied the BMSA framework to the transonic flow over an airfoil. With this we are able to make predictive simulations of computationally expensive flow problems with quantified uncertainty due to various imperfections in the turbulence models

Abstract:
In this thesis, we study some symbolic-numeric aspects of the invariant pair problem for matrix polynomials. Invariant pairs extend the notion of eigenvalue-eigenvector pairs, providing a counterpart of invariant subspaces for the nonlinear case. They have applications in the numeric computation of several eigenvalues of a matrix polynomial; they also present an interest in the context of differential systems. Here, a contour integral formulation is applied to compute condition numbers and backward errors for invariant pairs. We then adapt the Sakurai-Sugiura moment method to the computation of invariant pairs, including some classes of problems that have multiple eigenvalues, and we analyze the behavior of the scalar and block versions of the method in presence of different multiplicity patterns. Results obtained via direct approaches may need to be refined numerically using an iterative method: here we study and compare two variants of Newton’s method applied to the invariant pair problem. The matrix solvent problem is closely related to invariant pairs. Therefore, we specialize our results on invariant pairs to the case of matrix solvents, thus obtaining formulations for the condition number and backward errors, and a moment-based computational approach. Furthermore, we investigate the relation between the matrix solvent problem and the triangularization of matrix polynomials

Abstract:
On paper and pencil multiple choice tests, the potential for examinees to mark their answers in incorrect locations presents a serious threat to the validity of test score interpretations. When an examinee skips one or more items (i.e., answers out of sequence) but fails to accurately reflect the size of that skip on their answer sheet, that can trigger a string of misaligned responses called shift errors. Shift errors can result in correct answers being marked as incorrect, leading to possible underestimation of an examinee's true ability. Despite movement toward computerized testing in recent years, paper and pencil multiple choice tests are still pervasive in many high stakes assessment settings, including K 12 testing (e.g., MCAS) and college entrance exams (e.g., SAT), leaving a continuing need to address issues that arise within this format. Techniques for detecting aberrant response patterns are well established but do little to recognize reasons for the aberrance, limiting options for addressing the misfitting patterns. While some work has been done to detect and address specific forms of aberrant response behavior, little has been done in the area of shift error detection, leaving great room for improvement in addressing this source of aberrance. The opportunity to accurately detect construct irrelevant errors and either adjust scores to more accurately reflect examinee ability or flag examinees with inaccurate scores for removal from the dataset and retesting would improve the validity of important decisions based on test scores, and could positively impact model fit by allowing for more accurate item parameter and ability estimation. The purpose of this study is to investigate new algorithms for shift error detection that employ IRT models for probabilistic determination as to whether misfitting patterns are likely to be shift errors. The study examines a matrix of detection algorithms, probabilistic models, and person parameter methods, testing combinations of these factors for their selectivity (i.e., true positives vs. false positives), sensitivity (i.e., true shift errors detected vs. undetected), and robustness to parameter bias, all under a carefully manipulated, multifaceted simulation environment. This investigation attempts to provide answers to the following questions, applicable across detection methods, bias reduction procedures, shift conditions, and ability levels, but stated generally as: 1) How sensitively and selectively can an IRT based probabilistic model detect shift error across the full range of probabilities under specific conditions?, 2) How robust is each detection method to the parameter bias introduced by shift error?, 3) How well does the detection method detect shift errors compared to other, more general, indices of person fit?, 4) What is the impact on bias of making proposed corrections to detected shift errors?, and 4) To what extent does shift error, as detected by the method, occur within an empirical data set? Results show that the proposed methods can indeed detect shift errors at reasonably high detection rates with only a minimal number of false positives, that detection improves when detecting longer shift errors, and that examinee ability is a huge determinant factor in the effectiveness of the shift error detection techniques. Though some detection ability is lost to person parameter bias, when detecting all but the shortest shift errors, this loss is minimal. Application to empirical data also proved effective, though some discrepancies in projected total counts suggest that refinements in the technique are required. Use of a person fit statistic to detect examinees with shift errors was shown to be completely ineffective, underscoring the value of shift error specific detection methods.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the knowledge of articles in Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) by students with Kiswahili L1. The main focus is to analyze the use of articles, focusing on different types of errors committed by the FL learners. Kiswahili is an article-less language. Therefore it is predicted that students will have difficulties in acquiring the article system in Portuguese, a language with articles. The study includes a total of 30 speakers of PFL, 12 students of proficiency level A1 and 18 of A2 who study Portuguese as foreign language at the State University of Zanzibar / Tanzania. Data were collected from informal letters written by the students in a classroom activity. The results show that the use of articles is a very problematic area for the PFL students. At initial stages of acquisition, learners frequently omit the article. In more advanced stages (i.e., in proficiency level A2), besides the omission, learners also substitute the articles by demonstratives or use the adjunction of the article with a possessive pronoun. These substitutions occur mostly in definite contexts, where definiteness is expressed through the pronoun and the gender and number categories through the article. Additionally, we realize that students use more definite articles than indefinite ones, revealing that the acquisition of the definite article precedes the indefinite. The results show also that the deviations are mainly caused by the influence of the learners’ first language. Other causes are over-generalization and ignorance of rule restrictions associated with the use of articles. Knowing that the article is a problematic area for students, we suggest in this study some exercises on the use of articles. Exercises focus more on areas that are problematic for students, such as definiteness, agreement in gender and number and article contractions with prepositions.<br>Agradecimento particular ao Instituto Camões, que me concedeu a bolsa para frequentar a parte curricular do meu curso

Abstract:
Are you interested in getting published and earning money as a writer? Whether your focus is books or articles, there are all manner of tricks of the trade that most writers have to learn the hard way, on their own, through trial and error—if they learn them at all. From how to write a book proposal to pitching to editors, from great openings to how to get paid and read contracts, the logistics of how to be a writer are rarely taught, even in creative writing programs and in how-to-write books. The 12-Hour Author lifts the veil and invites the reader in on the secrets of successful writers, both from the angle of how to write well, but also—and almost uniquely among books on the subject—the practical elements of how to work as a writer. The author is a Pulitzer nominee who has published more than twenty books, including international best-sellers, and hundreds of articles for major publications, including The Guardian and The Washington Post. Divided into 12 chapters, if you’re willing to commit as little as 12 hours to learning this craft, you’ll have all the tools you’ll need.

Ele muito me orgulha, pois me representa, me homenageia e abre oportunidades para os meus.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The role of the banking sector in driving economic development cannot be understated. Its stability is a critical factor that sets the pace for economic progress. Among the various indicators of financial stability, non-performing loans (NPLs) held by banks hold particular significance as they reflect asset quality, credit risk, and the efficient allocation of resources to productive sectors. NPLs have indeed been a subject of concern for the banking sector, with their prominence intensifying, especially after the 2008 financial crisis. This study investigates the relationship between Macroeconomic factors and non-performing loans in Lao PDR. The secondary data of four variables, namely, Interest Lending rate, CPI-Inflation, Nominal exchange rate, and Money supply from the first quarter of 2012 to the last quarter of 2021 have been collected in order to analyze the long-term relationship among economic factors and estimate the short-term adjustment toward the long-term equilibrium level. The Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) is applied to measure short-term adjustment toward the long-term equilibrium level. Based on the estimation results of the Vector Error Correction Model, two variables have a positive and significant effect on long-term non-performing loans, namely, lending interest rate, and money supply, and a significant inverse relationship with inflation, and exchange rate. Meanwhile, in the short term, only lending interest rates have a significant effect on non-performing loans.

Gli scholl. ex. Od.

Abstract:

Abstract Chapter 6 examines one area of nominal syntax; that is adverbial phrases. Greek and Coptic clearly diverge in this area with Greek drawing on both prepositional phrases and plain cases, whereas Coptic can only utilize the former option. The chapter is divided into three parts: Section 6.1 applies the concept of constructions to adverbial phrases. Section 6.2 details deviations by type of error. Section 6.3 evaluates the distribution of the observed errors against the predictor variables set out in Chapter 2. Section 6.4 briefly reviews some avoidance patterns relevant to the syntax of adverbial phrases.

Abstract:
Medical records have been evolving from the traditional paper-based records to digital ones, from the method of dictating reports and transcription to voice recognition systems. The transition to digital operations will not be complete until we have the ability to combine voice recognition with automated indexing of texts. This paper introduces the methods we used to evaluate existing voice recognition software programs and presents NOMINDEX, a system that turns a medical text into MeSH codes, using the French ADM lexical database. Those systems were applied to 28 patient discharge summaries in French, produced after a coronarography, and extracted from the MENELAS corpus of texts. Using the best configuration for voice recognition, the rate of accurate recognition exceeds 98 percent. Among the indexing concepts assigned by NOMINDEX, 25 percent were not pertinent and 12 percent of the relevant concepts were missing. Most errors were related to confusion between common language and medical language, and to the coverage of the ADM lexical database. Best results would be expected with a more comprehensive lexical resource In addition, only 3 percent of the errors generated by inadequate voice recognition that remained in the configuration that performed better, impacted on automatic indexing by NOMINDEX.

Abstract:
This chapter illustrates how politics played a part in the Senate's refusal to confirm John Early's appointment as governor of Mountain Province. Leonard Wood first appointed Early on March 1, 1925, but the Senate only confirmed his appointment during the last days of August 1927, just days after Governor-General Wood's unexpected death. In his first three years as governor, Early witnessed unprecedented advances among the Igorots. His 1926 and 1927 provincial annual reports are the most cited from the era of American rule. He delivered numerous speeches explaining the innate genius of the Igorots' morality and sense of justice. As 1927 came to a close, life was good for Early: Dean Worcester had apologized to him, the Philippine Senate acknowledged its earlier error in not confirming such an effective and gracious nominee, and he savored the opportunity to tirelessly serve the people he loved.

Abstract:
This paper revisits probabilistic, model-based goal recognition to study the implications of the use of nominal models to estimate the posterior probability distribution over a finite set of hypothetical goals. Existing model-based approaches rely on expert knowledge to produce symbolic descriptions of the dynamic constraints domain objects are subject to, and these are assumed to produce correct predictions. We abandon this assumption to consider the use of nominal models that are learnt from observations on transitions of systems with unknown dynamics. Leveraging existing work on the acquisition of domain models via learning for Hybrid Planning we adapt and evaluate existing goal recognition approaches to analyze how prediction errors, inherent to system dynamics identification and model learning techniques have an impact over recognition error rates.

Abstract Modem inspection devices generate large quantites for error data for analysis. This paper describes a CAD based inspection analysis system that utilizes this data. Such a system is requires 1) the definition of error types, 2) the incorporation of tolerances into CAD definitions, 3) generation of errors between actual and nominal CAD geometry, 4) datuming of the geometries, 5) analysis of the errors and 6) display of those errors. The first 4 points are reviewed and a system for analysing and displaying the errors described. Such a system for aerofoil type geometry has been implemented within the CADDS4X CAD system and is described.

Abstract:
Abstract The control of each individual bend and overall process is presented in part 1 of the paper. In part 2 of the paper, statistical methods are used to analyze and improve 3-D tube bending accuracy. The relationship between bending process error and tube geometry error is obtained with Monte Carlo simulation. For the same tube tolerance requirement, the required process tolerance varies in a large range based on tube geometry. Among the three bending errors: bend angle, bend plane and distance between bends, bend angle error has the largest influence on tube error. For a tube with multiple bends, the overall tube geometry error can be minimized by intentionally modify the nominal values of the bends to be made based on the errors in the existing bends. The required modification of the bending commands is calculated with an adaptive bend correction algorithm.

Abstract:
The numerical integration of Foucault test data is simplified when readings are taken for the centers of contiguous zones of equal area. Height errors from the reference surface are shown to be proportional to the simple sump of knife-edge shifts from nominal settings. Change of reference curvature for minimum zonal error is effected by changing each shift by the same amount. Errors are exact to third-order for conic surfaces. The method is especially helpful when many tests must be made in the figuring process. Formulas are derived and an example is given, using both arithmetical and graphical error adjustment.

Abstract:
In this paper, we proposed an error decomposition method, in which some major error components can be experimentally estimated using an on-machine measurement (OMM) system. Unlike the conventional machining, the geometric error of a micro-tool, i.e., the deviation of the effective tool diameter from a nominal value, becomes a dominant factor affecting the machining accuracy. The error stems from both the tool fabrication error and the dynamic runout of the spindle system under high rpm. An on-machine measurement system based on a non-contact confocal laser sensor was developed that can accurately and efficiently acquire the effective tool diameter. To compensate the error due to the tool geometric error, the effective tool diameter was used to replace the nominal tool diameter to generate the tool path. The experimental results showed that the tool geometric error contributes over 50% to the total machining error. After compensation, the machining accuracy was significantly improved. The machine contour error has negligible influence on the dimension error of the machined feature, but it affects the form error, such as circularity of a machined hole. The process induced surface location errors were estimated from both experiments and model simulations, and good match was achieved.

Abstract:
Abstract Industrial robots are increasingly considered as a potential alternative especially for machining tasks while the poor positioning accuracy prevented it from broader application. Model-based compensation, which improves the accuracy of a nominal model by incorporating additional error parameters, is acknowledged as an effective and efficient solution. In such a compensation, the precision of the kinematic model’s predictions is crucial for achieving high accuracy robotic machining. Many researchers employed the conventional Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) error model, which describes the kinematic errors by positional and orientational deviations of axis average lines. However, it has been noticed that the identification results of D-H errors could vary with the posture of downstream axes. Such phenomena cannot be properly captured by a set of static D-H error parameters. This research introduces a novel modelling scheme that contains posture-dependent D-H errors. Validation results demonstrate that the proposed posture-dependent model improves the positioning accuracy of the investigated robot with satisfactory performance, which reveals the posture-dependent properties of D-H errors.

Abstract:
The recent Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) method developed by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Integrated Human Event Analysis System (IDHEAS), provides a well-grounded model to analyze human errors as well as a promising interface for generalizing and integrating human error data from various sources. Nevertheless, the task context and human performance in different domains, even in different applications within one domain, manifest quite different features which make it elusive to draw an inter-sector or inter-application comparison. In light of this contradiction, one question arises: Can HRA in distinct applications be cross-referenced to one another? Motivated by this, an interview study was conducted as a preliminary attempt to figure out the similarities and differences between two typical activities in the nuclear domain, i.e., maintenance and commissioning, with respect to two vital HRA elements, i.e., error modes and performance shaping factors (PSFs). A total of 21 engineers in a nuclear power plant were recruited to participate in the interview about salient error modes and PSFs in maintenance activities as well as a comparison with commissioning activities. Results show that the two activities share analogous error modes and PSFs on the whole, but vary in the patterns and distributions of each individual PSFs. Hence, results of the present study indicate that human errors in these two comparable activities could be characterized by a unified taxonomy, affording positive evidence for the thrown question. However, the discrepancy in the PSF patterns should never be neglected, which could lead to the divergency of nominal PSF levels and nominal human error probabilities.

Abstract:
A method called model reconciliation (MR) has previously been reported which modifies analytic rotordynamic models to make them match experimental data. An identified model derived from the experimental data and a nominal model from the engineering analysis are needed; an auxiliary dynamic system is then synthesized to modify the dynamics of the nominal model to match the identified model. The combination of the engineering model and the auxiliary dynamic system is the reconciled model. Due to numerous experimental uncertainties, the identified model may contain significant errors. These errors are then embedded by the reconciliation process so that the reconciled model is incorrect, and sometimes quite poor. A robust control synthesis method is presented here which accounts for model error bounds in generating the auxiliary dynamics to minimize their impact on the final model. To examine the validity of the process, extra data as a reference are used to compare with the data produced by the reconciled model. Both simulated data and experimental data are used to demonstrate the results of the method. The error model permits the synthesis to ignore spurious features of the identified model, thereby producing more reasonable results.

Abstract:
This project included seven, full-scale burst tests conducted on a single grade and size of pipe to evaluate a metal-loss defect assessment model developed under EWI Project No. 54922CSP, "Assessment of Corrosion Model Error for Metal Loss Defects in Pipelines" (PRCI Project EC-2-6). The goal of the modeling and full-scale test efforts was to minimize error and reduce the conservatism of Level-1 corrosion assessment models, with the eventual benefit of potentially reducing unwarranted maintenance efforts without increasing operator risk. Seven tests were performed on a recent vintage of API 5L X70M (L485M) grade pipe having an outside diameter of 24 in. (610 mm) and nominal wall thickness of 0.50 in. (12.7 mm). The seven test pipes contained machined flat-bottomed defects for which the Shape Factor is 1, to focus on the role of the planar defect size and its depth and avoid the complexities of river-bottom shaped defects that are beyond the current scope. Defect lengths ranged between 3 and le; L/(Dt)0.5 and le; 10, at bounding values of width taken at arc angles of 20 and 60 degrees, and depth at d/t of 30% and 80%. The simulated corrosion was centered in pups approximately 12 ft (~3.7 m) in length, which is sufficient to prevent any interaction between the end caps with the defects. The pipes were then end-capped and pressurized with water to failure. The actual failure pressures were evaluated relative to predictions based on the model developed in EC-2-7 coupled with the reference stress developed in PRCI Project EC-2-6.

Abstract:
We study the effect of macroeconomic announcements surprises on Colombian treasury bond spot rates in the medium term. For this, we employ a two-step regression approach proposed by Altavilla, Giannone and Modugno (2017), which takes into account the high frequency response to these surprises while filtering out the noise in the estimation of its medium to long term effect. We found that the share of variation of one day Colombian treasury bond spot rates changes explained by these surprises lies below 10%. Moreover, Colombian macroeconomic announcement surprises other than the nominal exchange rate depreciation do not seem to significantly affect spot rate changes, although important ones have big (but not significant) effect. Furthermore, the explanatory power of macroeconomic news surprises increases substantially at longer horizons, i.e. monthly and quarterly changes, reaching 34% for the latter. These results arise from the fact that spot rate changes show a delayed effect to shocks. This is mostly due to the features of the shocks contained in the error and the persistence of macroeconomic news surprises effect’s. Our results are robust to the appetite for risk of international investors measure employed in the model.

UNIFIED FATIGUE LIFE CALCULATION OF Q460C STEEL FILLET WELD CRUCIFORM JOINTS CONSIDERING FATIGUE CRACK INITIATION AND PROPAGATION. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2024.20.3.2.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study experimentally investigates the effects of the relative stress amplitude and the relative nominal maximum stress on the fatigue life of Q460C steel fillet weld cruciform joints. An ellipsoidal fracture model proposed by the first author is used as the criterion of crack tip cracking and fatigue crack instability propagation. Theoretical calculations and numerical simulations were employed to analyze the fatigue crack initiation and propagation in the fillet weld cruciform joint. In addition, the fatigue crack initiation life, stable propagation life and total fatigue life were predicted using a unified fatigue life calculation model proposed by the first author. The calculation results reveal that the proposed unified fatigue life calculation model yield accurate fatigue life estimations, with errors ranging from −12.8% to −0.4%. Conversely, the calculation errors of the fatigue life formulas recommended in GB50017-2017, Eurocode3, and AISC360 range from −64.4% to −8.0%, −72.5% to −29.1%, and −49.4% to +30.7%, respectively.

Monetary Policy Report - July 2022. Banco de la República, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/inf-pol-mont-eng.tr3-2022.

Full text
Abstract:
In the second quarter, annual inflation (9.67%), the technical staff’s projections and its expectations continued to increase, remaining above the target. International cost shocks, accentuated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have been more persistent than projected, thus contributing to higher inflation. The effects of indexation, higher than estimated excess demand, a tighter labor market, inflation expectations that continue to rise and currently exceed 3%, and the exchange rate pressures add to those described above. High core inflation measures as well as in the producer price index (PPI) across all baskets confirm a significant spread in price increases. Compared to estimates presented in April, the new forecast trajectory for headline and core inflation increased. This was partly the result of greater exchange rate pressure on prices, and a larger output gap, which is expected to remain positive for the remainder of 2022 and which is estimated to close towards yearend 2023. In addition, these trends take into account higher inflation rate indexation, more persistent above-target inflation expectations, a quickening of domestic fuel price increases due to the correction of lags versus the parity price and higher international oil price forecasts. The forecast supposes a good domestic supply of perishable foods, although it also considers that international prices of processed foods will remain high. In terms of the goods sub-basket, the end of the national health emergency implies a reversal of the value-added tax (VAT) refund applied to health and personal hygiene products, resulting in increases in the prices of these goods. Alternatively, the monetary policy adjustment process and the moderation of external shocks would help inflation and its expectations to begin to decrease over time and resume their alignment with the target. Thus, the new projection suggests that inflation could remain high for the second half of 2022, closing at 9.7%. However, it would begin to fall during 2023, closing the year at 5.7%. These forecasts are subject to significant uncertainty, especially regarding the future behavior of external cost shocks, the degree of indexation of nominal contracts and decisions made regarding the domestic price of fuels. Economic activity continues to outperform expectations, and the technical staff’s growth projections for 2022 have been revised upwards from 5% to 6.9%. The new forecasts suggest higher output levels that would continue to exceed the economy’s productive capacity for the remainder of 2022. Economic growth during the first quarter was above that estimated in April, while economic activity indicators for the second quarter suggest that the GDP could be expected to remain high, potentially above that of the first quarter. Domestic demand is expected to maintain a positive dynamic, in particular, due to the household consumption quarterly growth, as suggested by vehicle registrations, retail sales, credit card purchases and consumer loan disbursement figures. A slowdown in the machinery and equipment imports from the levels observed in March contrasts with the positive performance of sales and housing construction licenses, which indicates an investment level similar to that registered for the first three months of the year. International trade data suggests the trade deficit would be reduced as a consequence of import levels that would be lesser than those observed in the first quarter, and stable export levels. For the remainder of the year and 2023, a deceleration in consumption is expected from the high levels seen during the first half of the year, partially as a result of lower repressed demand, tighter domestic financial conditions and household available income deterioration due to increased inflation. Investment is expected to continue its slow recovery while remaining below pre-pandemic levels. The trade deficit is expected to tighten due to projected lower domestic demand dynamics, and high prices of oil and other basic goods exported by the country. Given the above, economic growth in the second quarter of 2022 would be 11.5%, and for 2022 and 2023 an annual growth of 6.9% and 1.1% is expected, respectively. Currently, and for the remainder of 2022, the output gap would be positive and greater than that estimated in April, and prices would be affected by demand pressures. These projections continue to be affected by significant uncertainty associated with global political tensions, the expected adjustment of monetary policy in developed countries, external demand behavior, changes in country risk outlook, and the future developments in domestic fiscal policy, among others. The high inflation levels and respective expectations, which exceed the target of the world's main central banks, largely explain the observed and anticipated increase in their monetary policy interest rates. This environment has tempered the growth forecast for external demand. Disruptions in value chains, rising international food and energy prices, and expansionary monetary and fiscal policies have contributed to the rise in inflation and above-target expectations seen by several of Colombia’s main trading partners. These cost and price shocks, heightened by the effects of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have been more prevalent than expected and have taken place within a set of output and employment recovery, variables that in some countries currently equal or exceed their projected long-term levels. In response, the U.S. Federal Reserve accelerated the pace of the benchmark interest rate increase and rapidly reduced liquidity levels in the money market. Financial market actors expect this behavior to continue and, consequently, significantly increase their expectations of the average path of the Fed's benchmark interest rate. In this setting, the U.S. dollar appreciated versus the peso in the second quarter and emerging market risk measures increased, a behavior that intensified for Colombia. Given the aforementioned, for the remainder of 2022 and 2023, the Bank's technical staff increased the forecast trajectory for the Fed's interest rate and reduced the country's external demand growth forecast. The projected oil price was revised upward over the forecast horizon, specifically due to greater supply restrictions and the interruption of hydrocarbon trade between the European Union and Russia. Global geopolitical tensions, a tightening of monetary policy in developed economies, the increase in risk perception for emerging markets and the macroeconomic imbalances in the country explain the increase in the projected trajectory of the risk premium, its trend level and the neutral real interest rate1. Uncertainty about external forecasts and their consequent impact on the country's macroeconomic scenario remains high, given the unpredictable evolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, geopolitical tensions, the degree of the global economic slowdown and the effect the response to recent outbreaks of the pandemic in some Asian countries may have on the world economy. This macroeconomic scenario that includes high inflation, inflation forecasts, and expectations above 3% and a positive output gap suggests the need for a contractionary monetary policy that mitigates the risk of the persistent unanchoring of inflation expectations. In contrast to the forecasts of the April report, the increase in the risk premium trend implies a higher neutral real interest rate and a greater prevailing monetary stimulus than previously estimated. For its part, domestic demand has been more dynamic, with a higher observed and expected output level that exceeds the economy’s productive capacity. The surprising accelerations in the headline and core inflation reflect stronger and more persistent external shocks, which, in combination with the strength of aggregate demand, indexation, higher inflation expectations and exchange rate pressures, explain the upward projected inflation trajectory at levels that exceed the target over the next two years. This is corroborated by the inflation expectations of economic analysts and those derived from the public debt market, which continued to climb and currently exceed 3%. All of the above increase the risk of unanchoring inflation expectations and could generate widespread indexation processes that may push inflation away from the target for longer. This new macroeconomic scenario suggests that the interest rate adjustment should continue towards a contractionary monetary policy landscape. 1.2. Monetary policy decision Banco de la República’s Board of Directors (BDBR), at its meetings in June and July 2022, decided to continue adjusting its monetary policy. At its June meeting, the BDBR decided to increase the monetary policy rate by 150 basis points (b.p.) and its July meeting by majority vote, on a 150 b.p. increase thereof at its July meeting. Consequently, the monetary policy interest rate currently stands at 9.0% . 1 The neutral real interest rate refers to the real interest rate level that is neither stimulative nor contractionary for aggregate demand and, therefore, does not generate pressures that lead to the close of the output gap. In a small, open economy like Colombia, this rate depends on the external neutral real interest rate, medium-term components of the country risk premium, and expected depreciation.
