Abstract:

Abstract:

People with disabilities are excluded from society because of the negative mark of discrediting received by the social environment - for his appearance or his way of being different - that puts out the standard classifying them as being deviant. In everyday school say whether these brands and they reproduce, not encouraging people with disabilities overcome such a stigma. The research aims to examine how stigma built by students with disabilities influence the process of interaction and inclusion school, studying evidence as it develops the process of stigmatization in the light of school everyday thoughts of Erving Goffman. It is used a literature review of the specific theme, based on studies of Erving Goffman together the empirical research based on the ethnographic experienced by the author in his studies of community, is used as strategies for research, interviews with teachers and 3 comments recorded scenes of daily life through school, 2 public schools in Brazil. In chapter.1 we seek to understand the constructs of Goffman mainly through his academic career in chapter.2 the work focused on understanding the social interaction and mainly defined by the author in question as an order of interaction, where people are authors within of a social scene in chapter 3. the research revolves around the end stigma and how this influences the interaction and the advancement of people with disabilities, finally finishes the work in chapter .4 presenting the analysis of records of interviews and scenes of everyday school life. The selected scenes show the actors involved, the scenario, and the plot of the interactions, identifying the strategies of stigma built by students with disabilities, seeking connections with the inclusive policies and the Brazilian schools. First comes the research identifying the school as a means of socialization and creation of knowledge has an important role in this process of change, although often play the social stigma. The school can help in changing the look that excludes, unmasking some of the masks and own social inclusion; their renewal and their stakeholders should value the differences in construction of new knowledge(AU)

Whiteside, Bethany. "The hidden dancers : a Goffmanian analysis of participatory dance activity and practice in Glasgow, Scotland." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/11017.

Abstract:
Sociology of dance is an evolving discipline that takes as a central focus the social makeup of dance – the societal structures and individual agency that are inherent within dance activity and practice. Relevant ethnographic literature that adopts particular sociological concepts and models is generally narrow in focus, with attention centred on the frameworks of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault and the conformation of vocational and professional ballet and contemporary dancer minds and bodies, to particular practice-specific behaviours and beliefs. Through drawing on Erving Goffman's (1959/1990) model of dramaturgy, this interdisciplinary thesis uncovers and interrogates the two-way relationship between sociological micro relations (social interactions), and various types of dance activity and practice. Six case studies undertaken encompass a wide range of dance and social settings; the professional ballet class, inclusive creative dance class, line dancing class, salsa club, Highland dancing class, and dance in primary education. Data was collected through undertaking participant observation (primary method) and qualitative interviews (secondary method): each specific combination was influenced by the reflexive approach followed, the nature and setting of each case study and as researcher, my own dance ability. The transcripts and field notes were analysed and situated within Goffman's (1959/1990) framework to interrogate the social and dance ‘performances' given. The research aims to firstly, uncover and present the nature of the ‘realities' (Goffman, 1959/1990) within each setting and secondly, to interrogate and demonstrate the applicability of the dramaturgical model to dance scholarship. The findings reflect the sociological binary of individual agency and societal structures as realities were shaped by the ‘place' of each dance activity and practice in the field of dance, and challenged, maintained or supported existing dominant perceptions.

Abstract:
In various social networks available on the Internet, including LinkedIn, individuals may present themselves in a profile with a personal presentation in aim to find a new job. However presentations do differ depending on from which line of profession individuals present themselves from. Do to previous research LinkedIn users utilize strategies to manipulate information they present, also seen in controlling and handling of how an individual should be perceived. The theoretical framework was found in Erving Goffman's theories about impression management which is used to examine the phenomenon on a deeper level. The method used for this study was qualitative method with text analysis where the material was collected from the LinkedIn website and consisted of four different profession categories with ten profiles per category. The study's results showed how profession categories present themselves on LinkedIn, where was even shown what was common and what distinguished. The conclusion was that profession categories present themselves with expressions which are contingent on the norms, values and expectations as conditioned by the given profession. They are therefore the result of an tradition in their social profession which requires that specific form of expression.

Abstract: The entrepreneur's identity is usually studied in order to assign to this person characteristics thought to be desirable to his functions, thus promoting the notion of entrepreneurial profile. Alternative approaches to the identity of this individual are little used and, among them, Goffman's dramaturgical metaphor (1959) can be beneficial, as it relates human action to the representation of socially constructed roles, as the entrepreneur one. This dissertation aims at understanding how the entrepreneur's role constitutes the personal identity, that is, the subject's conception about himself. Dramaturgical metaphor and micro-analysis serve this purpose, being complementary to the proposed qualitative analyses, enabling greater understanding of the latent content, adding the particular nuances of the interactions and selfrepresentations study to the analysis of verbal communication. The results reveal that the understanding of the individual about the role, perceived social expectations for the entrepreneur role and representation in response to these expectations result in the internalization of values and behaviors of this role, constituting the identity of this individual. The results show yet that the individual assumes the entrepreneur's role seeking approval for their venture, to increase self-esteem and the selfaffirmation of his desired identity to the public. Keywords: Personal Identity; entrepreneurship; entrepreneur's role; symbolic interaction; Erving Goffman; dramaturgical metaphor.

LeBlanc, Matthew. "Face-Work Within Blogs: The Use and Modification of Real World Rituals Within a Virtual Setting." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2009. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/982.

Full text
Abstract:
In his Essay "On Face-Work" Erving Goffman identifies the rules for a number of face-to-face interaction rituals. Among these rituals are two ways of correcting participants within an interaction. The first correction ritual, the interchange, allows offending interactants a chance to save face. The second ritual, the points making game, is a way for interactants to cause other participants to lose face. This thesis analyzes the content of a random sample of blogs to see if the rituals described above are employed in online interaction, specifically looking at blogs and how the context of the rituals is modified, including whether and how they are modified. It was found that the ritual of the interchange was modified. The ritual of the points making game though left unmodified occurred with greater frequency.

Paris, EHESS, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EHES0088.

Full text
Abstract:
Works of art remain a problematic object for sociology, yet they nourish the thoughts of sociologists and, in a variable way, the processes of knowledge that these researchers devote to other objects of study. Occasionally, turning the works of art into a precious analyzer of what escapes from gaze of science allows them to examine their own paradigms. In that case, some evoke the possibility of building a fertile epistemological partnership between art and sociology, a partnership whose challenges are opened and methods yet to be explored and questioned in the same movement. This is the path I have chosen to follow, by exploring the way in which the work of Pina Bausch could help me to reread that of Erving Goffman. Goffman's sociology is often associated with the analogies that the author elaborates to analyze face-to-face interactions - the dramaturgic metaphor that he develops in The Presentation of the Self being the best known. As for Pina Bausch, she became famous as a choreographer by experimenting, in her plays, with different kinds of continuities between the ordinary performances of the interactant and the feats one would expect from an actor on stage. I have considered this "dramaturgic amalgam" as a borderline object of Goffman's metaphors, an object able to set these conceptual devices in motion and put them to a test, in an unusual and fruitful way. Based upon three plays of Bausch, Kontakthof, 1980 and Walzer, this analytical experiment enabled me to explore and analyze the complexity of the Goffmanian text and, following this exploration, to defend the possibility of using art as a reading tool for sociology and the sociological writing

Richey, Michelle. "Exploring social media use in small firms : a cultural toolkit perspective." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/22006.

Abstract:
Social media platforms have proliferated rapidly, altering societal norms of communication. Whilst a number of studies (Treem & Leonardi, 2012; Leonardi, 2014; Koch, Gonzalez & Leidner, 2013) have shed light on the implications of social media use for firms, there remains a limited understanding of how firms interpret and implement social media. This thesis seeks to address the gap by exploring the psycho-sociological processes underpinning social media use in small firms. Data was collected during a qualitative study of social media use in 31 organizations in the United Kingdom (UK) and interpreted using concepts from Swidlers (1986) cultural toolkit framework. This thesis contributes insights about the wide variety of resources required to participate in the networked society (Harris, Rae & Misner, 2012) using social media platforms. Previous studies have suggested that interpretations play an important role in social media use (i.e. Treem & Leonardi s affordances, 2012) but have failed to explicate how interpretations of social media are formed. This study found that respondents drew on a wide variety of cultural tools (Swidler, 1986) in order to interpret and operate their social media accounts. These included their embodied skills, habits and styles as well as resources that were available through their social networks. The study found that the respondents interpretation of social media as a low risk and highly uncertain endeavour prompted their experimentation with various combinations of cultural tools as attempts were made to overcome the common challenges of social media use (i.e. finding time for social media, knowing what to post on social media). One such challenge related to the marked difference between social media interactions and face-to-face encounters. The findings are used to extend Goffman s notion of situation-like encounters (1979). It is contended that social media provide a rich example of a situation-like context.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Given the social importance of understanding violence and why it is applied, this study offers a thorough discussion on antifascists actions and perceptions in relation to violence. While previous research has examined antifascism, a substantial understanding of the concept and justification of violence through individual frames has fallen short. With the objective to contribute to the field of peace and conflict through theoretical approaches in the discipline of sociology, this study aims to contribute to decreasing this gap. With the help of Erving Goffman’s Framing Analysis, previous research, and thematic analysis, this study accounts for the individual perceptions and meanings ascribed to social situations and violence within anti-fascism. By conducting eight semi-structured interviews with individuals who identify themselves as active antifascists, this study has been able to demonstrate the importance of recognising the subjective understanding of violence as a means for an antifascist goal. Indeed, the antifascist perceptions are highly individual, where the mere notion that is agreed upon is that fascism has to be countered. While certain individuals justify violence for an antifascist purpose, it is framed as self-defence – but that violence is justified for the greater aim of antifascism, is not proved as a commonality.

This dissertation presents a comprehensive qualitative study of the decision-making aspects of emergency department (ED) triage at a large urban Trauma I hospital in the Southeast. Specifically, this study addresses the following research questions: (1) What do triage nurses perceive as the primary role of the triage process? (2) How do triage nurses interpret patient performances? These questions are explored through illuminating the intricacies of triage decision-making by the use of semi-structured interviews and observations. The findings of this study indicate: (1) a better understanding of the triage decision- making process yielding more practical insights related to the informal, emergent, and often improvisational ways patients are received, categorized, and treated was needed, and (2) providing a clearer understanding of the processes involved in sorting patients may provide much-needed insight regarding clinical concerns and/or issues regarding patient categorization, adverse clinical events, and excessive patient wait times. These findings are of particular importance due to the widespread overuse of EDs for nonemergent care. Essentially, EDs are designed for patients to visit due to an alteration in their physical and/or mental state. Once a patient enters the ED, a medical professional is tasked with the responsibility of interpreting the physical and/or mental state of the patient, which is generally achieved by interpreting the patient story - the precipitating event that brought them into the ED. What this study contributes to the literature is a deeper understanding of the communicative processes that ED triage nurses leverage to make sense of patient stories.

Under a unthropological view, Theater and a computer have an important relationship. Whereas the individual in their human relations often presents himself before the others exerting social roles and regulating her performance so as to control the impression that people have about him, we have taken the Erving Goffman's theory of Theatrical Metaphor to analyze the interactions between Banco do Brazil, the bigest bank of Latin America, and it customers. The study environment is the company's fanpage on Facebook social network the Internet. We have applied the symbolic interacionalism approach in which people assign meanings to things according to their experiences and modify it through interpretive criteria. This communication, especially computer-mediated communication process, and the language are key elements. Computer-mediated communication environment created new arrangements and new modes of interaction that forced such areas as administration and Advertising to rearrange themselves. Under a market view mecadológico, companies can not be overlooked about the phenomenon of relationships in socialnetworks. In this sense, the Marketing Services presents as a substantial area of knowledge, because the clients are co-creators of value and they are active participant in their interactions too. We have used as a research method netnography. It is a derivation of ethnography that examines the behavior of individuals on the internet.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the aesthetic presence of social performance in six French and Czechoslovak New Wave films of the 1960s. The New Wave was particularly interested in portraying everyday life, and the film corpus studied in this thesis focuses specifically on the representation of the characters' social lives. In addition, the films share the commonality of being made with an aesthetic of authenticity inspired more or less by the 1960s observational documentary genre of cinéma vérité. In the film corpus, ordinary social situations occupy a more prominent place on screen than usual, and instigate a social kind of engagement with the films. Where narrative context conventionally provides the framework for a character's actions, in these unconventional films, it is the characters' social environments that more precisely contextualize their way of being. The aim of the thesis is to engage with these social contexts to understand the characters' social behaviours, and to examine how the 'vérité aesthetic' evokes a social kind of reading of the films. To this end, I develop in the first chapter a Goffmanian approach to the films, inspired by sociologist Erving Goffman's writings on social reality as a performative realm. I use his notions of social performance, social framework, and social perception to engage with each film through what I call a 'social gaze' that inspects the social dynamics of the characters' behaviours. Over the course of three case study chapters, I apply this approach to the films to unearth and discuss their social range of meaning. This thesis thus aims to contribute both to film historical scholarship on the 1960s European New Wave, and to a study of the aestheticization of social reality in film in general.

Abstract:

Social theory by Goffman in the 60’s can still be applied to our society, especially to the new social form of Facebook. ”What precautions do Facebook members take when they publish content (text, photos, video) to avoid problems caused by the collapse of different social arenas? What do they think of their own self-presentation on the social website?” Data was collected trough an online survey, available for my Facebook friends in April-May 2010, and personal interviews with seven of the respondents. The results show that 126/128 respondents state they are their “true self” in their daily life, and not Facebook. Simultaneously, 75 respondents claim they have never had problems being themselves on Facebook. 65 people don’t recognize the presentation of people they know on Facebook, but 124 people say they have never received comments stating this. The norms and rules of social interaction on this social site are not yet set, and Facebook members respond to this by strict control of what they publish. It is evident that Facebook members enjoy peeking behind the self-presentation of people they know. Further research could show that this is one of the reasons why Facebook is so popular.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The ways in which advertisements can affect social and brand-related aspects is an area of interest for both companies and society at large. The aim of this study is to examine and identify differences in the production and interpretation of advertisements on Instagram, targeted towards men versus women. There are two research questions: (1) How can the production of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram targeted towards men and women differ? (2) How can the interpretation of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram targeted towards men and women differ, based on the gender of the interpreter?  The study includes a gender perspective and Goffman’s theory on gender and advertisements has been applied. To answer the second research question, Hall’s encoding/decoding theory has been applied.  The study consists of two research methods, a semiotic photo analysis and semi-structured interviews. The photo analysis was used for RQ1 and consisted of six photos, three from Gillette’s Instagram account and three photos from Gillette Venus’s account. The semi-structured interviews helped answer RQ2. A total of ten interviews were carried out, with an even distribution of male and female interviewees. A comparative analysis was used for both research methods to enable comparison between the two genders.  The results showed that there are three main differences in the production of Gillette and Gillette Venus’ advertisements on Instagram. As for RQ2, it was concluded that the gender of the interpreter affected how the advertisements’ overall message was interpreted.

Abstract:
This study aims to explain the demarcations regarding which crimes that are seen as “acceptable” to commit as an police officer, and those who categorizes as “not acceptable”. The study is based on a qualitative, narrative method of semi-structured interviews. Antecedent research shows the strong subculture in the police force and the approach of seeing the police profession as a lifestyle. This study uses Erving Goffmans dramaturgic perspective on society by applying “Team”, “Front Stage and “Back Stage” to explain why the demarcations is the way it is. By studying “Front Stage” as police officers in front of the public and “Back Stage” as a closed space for the police officers, the essay intends to see how police officers, seen as a team, deal with wrongful acts made by an police officer. By using an constructed sorting model the study separated the data from ten interviewed police officers by categorizing into ways of legitimizing crimes commited by an police officer. The study aims to show understanding in why unethic and unlegal deeds by police officers are not reported, and therefore legitimized by the subculture. The conclusion of this essay is that there are two ways to legitimize wrongful acts of police officers. These two ways are by the norms “Us versus them” and the silence code. We created two concepts in combination with the use of the theories of Goffman. This paper will show how the two concepts, ”team offset” and ”team censoring”, can legitimize crimes as a part of the subculture. To be able to legitimize a wrongful act, the police officer needs to use his team. If the team can not legitimize the crime, it categorizes as “not acceptable”.

Abstract:

Abstract:

In accordance with Michael Baxandalls theories regarding the Period Eye, a number of cultural and social circumstances relating to the role of the artist influencing the self-portraits are investigated. From Erving Goffmans dramaturgical perspective the selfportraits are viewed as part of a performance where the role of the artist is acted out. This amounts to an attempt of a nuanced interpretation and a view contemporary to the artists time.

Abstract:
This work deals with the global justice movement –“altermondialisation”- in the French press. The first part precises the theoretical perspective used when we study the media discourses. The notions of frame and framing are presented and adopted. They encourage to give up the approaches of media discourses which are discussed in terms’ of “representation of” and to recognize their power in the foundation of the common world. The part B is about the global justice movement like an event. Indeed, it’s through and by the event that the movement appears and finds, after the Seattle summit in 1999, a consistence and an esthetic in the mediated public sphere. Then, it’s through the paradigm of events that the global justice movement finds his identity and story and becomes a political actor. The part C concerns the year 2001. The violence becomes a problem. In July, violent fights between demonstrators and the Italian police end with the death of a young man. In September, it‘s the terrorist attack against the Twin towers in New York. The events are both studied through the consequences they have on the media discourses which deal with the global justice movement. In the last part, we analyze “altermondialisation” like a specific social discourse and his spread and circulation –his triviality- in the global social discourse

Abstract:
This work points the importance of the visibility and of publicity in the social reality constitution understood as stage putting, at both interaction and political space levels. The anthropologic basis of such forms putting is that men claim a singular image of them-selves and, more widely, a humanity conception, when they appear to each other in social situations. The thesis follows a progression which try to grasp the intentional and reflexive objects of social forms to different institutional levels. Starting with H. Arendt's normative conception of an appear desire which can only be realize on a politic gratefulness stage, it follows with the Simmel's and Goffman's interactionnist approaches. Simmel's association forms (Vergesellschaftung) reveal the difficulty about thinking institutions different levels. We can also question with him the contemporary social forms conditions. Such a visibility socio-anthropology can be developed with Goffman's radical interationnism study. At the end, the association intermediate spaces, taken as appear social forms, are the best revelator of actual visibility conditions. In associations, the personal or collective gratefulness quests find a new visibility mode and articulation. It represents new sociability an socialisation ways for contemporary personalities

The purpose of this compilation thesis (sammanläggningsavhandling) is to render explicit and analyze relations of power and modes of control comprising the social tissue of early medieval Benedictine monasteries. By bringing up the examples of tenth- and eleventh-century monasteries of St Gall, Fulda, and Bury St Edmunds, this thesis seeks to understand what power was in medieval monasteries, how and between whom it was exercised, what and how it affected in terms of collective and individual identity. The thesis consists of three introductory chapters, four previously published empirical articles, and a concluding remarks section. Article 1 investigates the problem of surveillance and patterns of social control dispersed in the monastery of St Gall. Article 2 studies the early and high medieval institutional expectations and means of enforcement of the monk’s role. Article 3 scrutinizes an example of a persecution process and a set of defense measures in the hands of the St Gall community warding off an unwanted visitor. Article 4 examines a number of internal monastic conflicts from several monasteries and strategies, both political and cognitive, guiding them. In investigating these problems, the thesis proceeds in a manner of deliberate anachronism. It asks questions about how human subjectivity was manufactured in early medieval St Gall, what were a medieval monastery’s ‘conditions of possibility’ to operate as a social regime, or oral and literary means of conflict management etc. The crucial modern social theories on which the thesis hinges are: Erving Goffman’s notion of ‘total institution’, and Michel Foucault’s analysis of power, as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s logic of action.

Abstract:
This thesis is a spatial reading of the Ulla Isaksson novel Kvinnohuset (first published in 1952) where the focus is on the spatial aspects of the novel and the House as a motif. Kvinnohuset is set in 1952 and revolves around a group of women who live in a residential building for single working women, Stockholm. The main plot is a love triangle between the director Tryggve, his wife Anna and his new mistress Eva, an actress. For the analysis I use contextualization on both an internallevel and an external level and an interdisciplinary selection of theories are used – performativity theory, spatial theory, narratology. The novel is also seen in relation to the historic context of socialdemocrat twentieth century Sweden. The house is found to function as a main organizing principle of the novel. The novel is also found to be a rich example of narrative space being intertwined with the social and emotional aspects of the text. The fabula revolves around the house – from Eva moving in to Anna being brought out – and narrating is often situated within the apartments, even when the events narrated take place in the city or elsewhere. The House is referred to as a creature, sometimes at the sametime referring to the collective of women residents as a social unit. The character of The House depends on the focalizor, and therefore shifts. Individual women characters' spaces are also used tocharacterize them and their relations – to the House, the novel and the narrative universe. The interplay between rooms and human relationships are thematized in the novel – each love affair isassigned its own space. The interaction in the stairways and the connection between the collectiveand the outside male world are also found to be central for the novel. In this thesis the construction of female and male in relation to homes and public space is also explored, since the novel is set in the 1950's when the idea of the woman as a housewifepeaked in popularity. The women are found to act as hostesses in their homes, using housework as acomforting practice in difficult situations.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The Maids by Jean Genet(1910-1986)was published in 1947. In this play, two maids Claire and Solange sarcastically play the role of their mistress and Claire respectively, while their mistress is away. It is by examining the interactions between the characters in this play through the perspective of Erving Goffman’s (1922-1982) sociological theory that the researcher attempts to re-interpret Genet’s The Maids. According to Goffman, how people behave in front of others is always determined by whom they are facing. In other words, it is illuminating to draw a parallel between how people play their social roles in front of others and how actors play their parts on stage for the spectators. To elaborate his arguments, Goffman underlines such concepts as “total institution”, “removal activities”, “front” and “back stage”, all of which cast new lights on our understanding of The Maids. The mistress’ house in the play to which the two maids are confined can be well understood as a “total institution”. The maids try to palliate the misery of their life in the house by means of a role-playing game, which can be seen as a “removal activity” inside this “total institution”. For the maids, their “front” is when their mistress is around, while their “back stage”, their mistress is absent. Although being sarcastic on appearance, their mocking game at “back stage” is after all not essentially different from their life at “front”, in terms of the similar hierarchical mistress-maid relationship in both cases. Hence, the self-value of the maids totally depends on this hierarchical relationship, no matter whether they are at “front” or at “back stage”. It is not until the final scene when the maid Claire in the role of the mistress, helped by the maid Solange in the role of Claire, drinks the poisonous linden tea and dies that the mistress-maid hierarchy has finally come to an end for both of them. This conscious decision made by the maids can be understood as a process of self-awareness which brings about the true liberation of these two maids who used to indulge themselves in the endless hierarchical game. To decide rather than to be decided is not only a perspective of interpreting The Maids but can also be a revelation for us today.

Abstract:
This master’s thesis analyses the paths taken by individuals who exit ultraorthodox Jewish communities. More precisely, it illuminates the process by which certain Hasidim take it upon themselves to leave behind the lifestyle and the community in which they were born and raised. My research primarily uses interviews and field notes to show how certain individuals manage to exit such ultra-religious communities despite the presence of strong social controls to prevent leaving. This study examines adjustment strategies and ruses used by Hasidim to avoid religious control and prompt their departure process. Drawing from Goffman’s theory, I will show how in a controlled environment individuals are still able to succeed in creating some marges de manoeuvre. These particular spaces of liberty shaped by each individual allow for the ultimate success of completely leaving the community.

Guertin-Tardif, Etienne.

Abstract:
In this research I explore the pastoral activities offered at a women’s detention center in the province of Quebec. Based on participant observations conducted in the Catholic chapel of the establishment, I examine the interactions that are part of religious activities : gestures, words, and behaviors that take place before, during, and after the performances. Drawing on Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical approach I first reconstruct the various situations that compose the prison’s pastoral activities in order to describe what the actors say and do during these activities. By reconstructing religious activities, I discover the presence of “incidents”. What I call “incident” are words or gestures that keep manifesting themselves and slowing down the pace of the religious activities. Secondly, I try to understand and explain the recurrence of these « incidents ». This allowing me to reflect on 1) the “total” character of the institution in which they emerge, 2) the culture of participants by which they are incurred, and 3) the structure of religious activities in which they take shape. Through the portraying of situations, the analysis of interactions, and the description of their specificity, this research provides a better understanding of the religious activities as they are performed in prison without neglecting to look at its contents and manifestation in situ.

Abstract:
How do retail service industry employees perform appearance and identity to generate capital? This thesis is data collected through interviews with 5 female retail employees, analyzed in conjunction with relevant readings about performance at work through appearance and identity (Chapter 1 Erving Goffman), the involvement of the self at work for financial gain of the self and the employer (Chapter 2 Arlie Russell Hochschild) and the sale of self for the accumulation of forms of capital (Chapter 3 Pierre Bourdieu, Henri Lefebvre, and other theorists concerned with consumer culture). The thesis begins at the level of the individual, expands to the realm of the retail environment and its associated relationships, and finally moves to examining the circulation of forms of capital. I assert that the research participants, as embodied employees of lifestyle brands, provide a form of capital for their employers. The employees performances positively reinforce the retailers brands and images, and thereby reproduce consumer culture by inciting desire.

Medeiros, Daniela Sousa. "“This is an acknowledgement that we are acting, for what else can we do in such a setup?”: Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in light of Goffman’s Dramaturgy." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/91700.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, a novel set in a theocratic patriarchal society which employs an omnipresent and dissimulated surveillance of its citizens, through the Dramaturgical theory of social interaction formulated by the Canadian-American sociologist Erving Goffman, as presented in his work The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life. By exploring how the dystopian dictatorial regime of Gilead forces its citizens into submitting to a role imposed by those in power, it stands out that most individuals will perform their assigned role only as faithfully as the powerful audience they are in front of at that specific moment requires it to be. Most characters are cynical about their public performances and try to covertly go against what is expected of them by whatever means they can, avoiding being caught subverting those expectations and suffering the consequences their disobedience would bring. The most effective form of defiance proves to be enacted through “team-performances”, a term devised by Goffman which designates the cooperation between two or more people invested in keeping a performance common to all involved, particularly when that performance has some sort of secret that must be kept from general knowledge. It is by apparently adapting herself to what Gilead expects of her and rebelling silently that Offred, the protagonist, manages to survive and escape her oppressors, unlike other characters who openly revolt against the regime, proving how important it is to perform a role convincingly any society.

The research aims at explicating the perspectives of Erving Goffman’s Interaction-Relationship, and as point of view, through the trial transformation, deconstruction and restructuring the interaction concept, and through the self-interpretation of the text and dialogue with other scholars, hoping to produce new recognition and understanding of Teacher-pupil Interaction, to deepen the original meaning of Teacher-pupil Interaction, and provide a new mode of interaction and interaction strategies. " Interaction-Relationship " as the title of the research, segmenting the theory of Goffman's into "structure" and "strategy" two parts. "Structure" is mainly based on an interactive discussion of social relationships, the process of interaction mode building, and to shape an orderly and stable interaction structure, and to seek a universal interaction rules. "Strategy" concerned about the structure outside the order of action and destruction caused by the misuse of interaction-relationship, and interaction strategies used in the resumption of normal interaction. To establish the structure of interaction-relationship is to maintain the basis of social order, and the interaction strategies is the practical knowledge to complete the construction of interaction-relationship. The two are complementary. From an orderly situation to the conflict situation, and restore the ceremony, forming the cycles of the interaction course. Such "strategic interaction" mode providing another point of view and of a reference of value of the teacher-pupil interaction . The mode of interaction with particular emphasis by both the interaction of the "initiative", is committed to strategically plan to change the rules of interaction, and the two sides have the right to withdraw at any time to treat each other point of view of equality. To know each other as "strangers", so we were able to escape the framework of the role of teachers and students to think, given the appropriate respect for the other party without violation of privacy. Such interaction is with the nature of the game, undermine the repression and restrictions of the teachers and students in schools, adding to the fun of campus life.
