Full textPeople with disabilities are excluded from society because of the negative mark of discrediting received by the social environment - for his appearance or his way of being different - that puts out the standard classifying them as being deviant. In everyday school say whether these brands and they reproduce, not encouraging people with disabilities overcome such a stigma. The research aims to examine how stigma built by students with disabilities influence the process of interaction and inclusion school, studying evidence as it develops the process of stigmatization in the light of school everyday thoughts of Erving Goffman. It is used a literature review of the specific theme, based on studies of Erving Goffman together the empirical research based on the ethnographic experienced by the author in his studies of community, is used as strategies for research, interviews with teachers and 3 comments recorded scenes of daily life through school, 2 public schools in Brazil. In chapter.1 we seek to understand the constructs of Goffman mainly through his academic career in chapter.2 the work focused on understanding the social interaction and mainly defined by the author in question as an order of interaction, where people are authors within of a social scene in chapter 3. the research revolves around the end stigma and how this influences the interaction and the advancement of people with disabilities, finally finishes the work in chapter .4 presenting the analysis of records of interviews and scenes of everyday school life. The selected scenes show the actors involved, the scenario, and the plot of the interactions, identifying the strategies of stigma built by students with disabilities, seeking connections with the inclusive policies and the Brazilian schools. First comes the research identifying the school as a means of socialization and creation of knowledge has an important role in this process of change, although often play the social stigma. The school can help in changing the look that excludes, unmasking some of the masks and own social inclusion; their renewal and their stakeholders should value the differences in construction of new knowledge(AU)

Abstract: The entrepreneur's identity is usually studied in order to assign to this person characteristics thought to be desirable to his functions, thus promoting the notion of entrepreneurial profile. Alternative approaches to the identity of this individual are little used and, among them, Goffman's dramaturgical metaphor (1959) can be beneficial, as it relates human action to the representation of socially constructed roles, as the entrepreneur one. This dissertation aims at understanding how the entrepreneur's role constitutes the personal identity, that is, the subject's conception about himself. Dramaturgical metaphor and micro-analysis serve this purpose, being complementary to the proposed qualitative analyses, enabling greater understanding of the latent content, adding the particular nuances of the interactions and selfrepresentations study to the analysis of verbal communication. The results reveal that the understanding of the individual about the role, perceived social expectations for the entrepreneur role and representation in response to these expectations result in the internalization of values and behaviors of this role, constituting the identity of this individual. The results show yet that the individual assumes the entrepreneur's role seeking approval for their venture, to increase self-esteem and the selfaffirmation of his desired identity to the public. Keywords: Personal Identity; entrepreneurship; entrepreneur's role; symbolic interaction; Erving Goffman; dramaturgical metaphor.

Full textWorks of art remain a problematic object for sociology, yet they nourish the thoughts of sociologists and, in a variable way, the processes of knowledge that these researchers devote to other objects of study. Occasionally, turning the works of art into a precious analyzer of what escapes from gaze of science allows them to examine their own paradigms. In that case, some evoke the possibility of building a fertile epistemological partnership between art and sociology, a partnership whose challenges are opened and methods yet to be explored and questioned in the same movement. This is the path I have chosen to follow, by exploring the way in which the work of Pina Bausch could help me to reread that of Erving Goffman. Goffman's sociology is often associated with the analogies that the author elaborates to analyze face-to-face interactions - the dramaturgic metaphor that he develops in The Presentation of the Self being the best known. As for Pina Bausch, she became famous as a choreographer by experimenting, in her plays, with different kinds of continuities between the ordinary performances of the interactant and the feats one would expect from an actor on stage. I have considered this "dramaturgic amalgam" as a borderline object of Goffman's metaphors, an object able to set these conceptual devices in motion and put them to a test, in an unusual and fruitful way. Based upon three plays of Bausch, Kontakthof, 1980 and Walzer, this analytical experiment enabled me to explore and analyze the complexity of the Goffmanian text and, following this exploration, to defend the possibility of using art as a reading tool for sociology and the sociological writing

Under a unthropological view, Theater and a computer have an important relationship. Whereas the individual in their human relations often presents himself before the others exerting social roles and regulating her performance so as to control the impression that people have about him, we have taken the Erving Goffman's theory of Theatrical Metaphor to analyze the interactions between Banco do Brazil, the bigest bank of Latin America, and it customers. The study environment is the company's fanpage on Facebook social network the Internet. We have applied the symbolic interacionalism approach in which people assign meanings to things according to their experiences and modify it through interpretive criteria. This communication, especially computer-mediated communication process, and the language are key elements. Computer-mediated communication environment created new arrangements and new modes of interaction that forced such areas as administration and Advertising to rearrange themselves. Under a market view mecadológico, companies can not be overlooked about the phenomenon of relationships in socialnetworks. In this sense, the Marketing Services presents as a substantial area of knowledge, because the clients are co-creators of value and they are active participant in their interactions too. We have used as a research method netnography. It is a derivation of ethnography that examines the behavior of individuals on the internet.

Full textSocial theory by Goffman in the 60’s can still be applied to our society, especially to the new social form of Facebook. ”What precautions do Facebook members take when they publish content (text, photos, video) to avoid problems caused by the collapse of different social arenas? What do they think of their own self-presentation on the social website?” Data was collected trough an online survey, available for my Facebook friends in April-May 2010, and personal interviews with seven of the respondents. The results show that 126/128 respondents state they are their “true self” in their daily life, and not Facebook. Simultaneously, 75 respondents claim they have never had problems being themselves on Facebook. 65 people don’t recognize the presentation of people they know on Facebook, but 124 people say they have never received comments stating this. The norms and rules of social interaction on this social site are not yet set, and Facebook members respond to this by strict control of what they publish. It is evident that Facebook members enjoy peeking behind the self-presentation of people they know. Further research could show that this is one of the reasons why Facebook is so popular.

Full text: This essay consists of an investigation into the role of the artist as represented in a selection of self-portraits by the artists David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl and Anders Zorn. In accordance with Michael Baxandalls theories regarding the Period Eye, a number of cultural and social circumstances relating to the role of the artist influencing the self-portraits are investigated. From Erving Goffmans dramaturgical perspective the selfportraits are viewed as part of a performance where the role of the artist is acted out. This amounts to an attempt of a nuanced interpretation and a view contemporary to the artists time.

Full textThis work deals with the global justice movement –“altermondialisation”- in the French press. The first part precises the theoretical perspective used when we study the media discourses. The notions of frame and framing are presented and adopted. They encourage to give up the approaches of media discourses which are discussed in terms’ of “representation of” and to recognize their power in the foundation of the common world. The part B is about the global justice movement like an event. Indeed, it’s through and by the event that the movement appears and finds, after the Seattle summit in 1999, a consistence and an esthetic in the mediated public sphere. Then, it’s through the paradigm of events that the global justice movement finds his identity and story and becomes a political actor. The part C concerns the year 2001. The violence becomes a problem. In July, violent fights between demonstrators and the Italian police end with the death of a young man. In September, it‘s the terrorist attack against the Twin towers in New York. The events are both studied through the consequences they have on the media discourses which deal with the global justice movement. In the last part, we analyze “altermondialisation” like a specific social discourse and his spread and circulation –his triviality- in the global social discourse

Full textThis work points the importance of the visibility and of publicity in the social reality constitution understood as stage putting, at both interaction and political space levels. The anthropologic basis of such forms putting is that men claim a singular image of them-selves and, more widely, a humanity conception, when they appear to each other in social situations. The thesis follows a progression which try to grasp the intentional and reflexive objects of social forms to different institutional levels. Starting with H. Arendt's normative conception of an appear desire which can only be realize on a politic gratefulness stage, it follows with the Simmel's and Goffman's interactionnist approaches. Simmel's association forms (Vergesellschaftung) reveal the difficulty about thinking institutions different levels. We can also question with him the contemporary social forms conditions. Such a visibility socio-anthropology can be developed with Goffman's radical interationnism study. At the end, the association intermediate spaces, taken as appear social forms, are the best revelator of actual visibility conditions. In associations, the personal or collective gratefulness quests find a new visibility mode and articulation. It represents new sociability an socialisation ways for contemporary personalities

Full textThis thesis is a spatial reading of the Ulla Isaksson novel Kvinnohuset (first published in 1952) where the focus is on the spatial aspects of the novel and the House as a motif. Kvinnohuset is set in 1952 and revolves around a group of women who live in a residential building for single working women, Stockholm. The main plot is a love triangle between the director Tryggve, his wife Anna and his new mistress Eva, an actress. For the analysis I use contextualization on both an internallevel and an external level and an interdisciplinary selection of theories are used – performativity theory, spatial theory, narratology. The novel is also seen in relation to the historic context of socialdemocrat twentieth century Sweden. The house is found to function as a main organizing principle of the novel. The novel is also found to be a rich example of narrative space being intertwined with the social and emotional aspects of the text. The fabula revolves around the house – from Eva moving in to Anna being brought out – and narrating is often situated within the apartments, even when the events narrated take place in the city or elsewhere. The House is referred to as a creature, sometimes at the sametime referring to the collective of women residents as a social unit. The character of The House depends on the focalizor, and therefore shifts. Individual women characters' spaces are also used tocharacterize them and their relations – to the House, the novel and the narrative universe. The interplay between rooms and human relationships are thematized in the novel – each love affair isassigned its own space. The interaction in the stairways and the connection between the collectiveand the outside male world are also found to be central for the novel. In this thesis the construction of female and male in relation to homes and public space is also explored, since the novel is set in the 1950's when the idea of the woman as a housewifepeaked in popularity. The women are found to act as hostesses in their homes, using housework as acomforting practice in difficult situations.

The Maids by Jean Genet(1910-1986)was published in 1947. In this play, two maids Claire and Solange sarcastically play the role of their mistress and Claire respectively, while their mistress is away. It is by examining the interactions between the characters in this play through the perspective of Erving Goffman’s (1922-1982) sociological theory that the researcher attempts to re-interpret Genet’s The Maids. According to Goffman, how people behave in front of others is always determined by whom they are facing. In other words, it is illuminating to draw a parallel between how people play their social roles in front of others and how actors play their parts on stage for the spectators. To elaborate his arguments, Goffman underlines such concepts as “total institution”, “removal activities”, “front” and “back stage”, all of which cast new lights on our understanding of The Maids. The mistress’ house in the play to which the two maids are confined can be well understood as a “total institution”. The maids try to palliate the misery of their life in the house by means of a role-playing game, which can be seen as a “removal activity” inside this “total institution”. For the maids, their “front” is when their mistress is around, while their “back stage”, their mistress is absent. Although being sarcastic on appearance, their mocking game at “back stage” is after all not essentially different from their life at “front”, in terms of the similar hierarchical mistress-maid relationship in both cases. Hence, the self-value of the maids totally depends on this hierarchical relationship, no matter whether they are at “front” or at “back stage”. It is not until the final scene when the maid Claire in the role of the mistress, helped by the maid Solange in the role of Claire, drinks the poisonous linden tea and dies that the mistress-maid hierarchy has finally come to an end for both of them. This conscious decision made by the maids can be understood as a process of self-awareness which brings about the true liberation of these two maids who used to indulge themselves in the endless hierarchical game. To decide rather than to be decided is not only a perspective of interpreting The Maids but can also be a revelation for us today.

Full textThis master’s thesis analyses the paths taken by individuals who exit ultraorthodox Jewish communities. More precisely, it illuminates the process by which certain Hasidim take it upon themselves to leave behind the lifestyle and the community in which they were born and raised. My research primarily uses interviews and field notes to show how certain individuals manage to exit such ultra-religious communities despite the presence of strong social controls to prevent leaving. This study examines adjustment strategies and ruses used by Hasidim to avoid religious control and prompt their departure process. Drawing from Goffman’s theory, I will show how in a controlled environment individuals are still able to succeed in creating some marges de manoeuvre. These particular spaces of liberty shaped by each individual allow for the ultimate success of completely leaving the community.

Full textIn this research I explore the pastoral activities offered at a women’s detention center in the province of Quebec. Based on participant observations conducted in the Catholic chapel of the establishment, I examine the interactions that are part of religious activities : gestures, words, and behaviors that take place before, during, and after the performances. Drawing on Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical approach I first reconstruct the various situations that compose the prison’s pastoral activities in order to describe what the actors say and do during these activities. By reconstructing religious activities, I discover the presence of “incidents”. What I call “incident” are words or gestures that keep manifesting themselves and slowing down the pace of the religious activities. Secondly, I try to understand and explain the recurrence of these « incidents ». This allowing me to reflect on 1) the “total” character of the institution in which they emerge, 2) the culture of participants by which they are incurred, and 3) the structure of religious activities in which they take shape. Through the portraying of situations, the analysis of interactions, and the description of their specificity, this research provides a better understanding of the religious activities as they are performed in prison without neglecting to look at its contents and manifestation in situ.

The research aims at explicating the perspectives of Erving Goffman’s Interaction-Relationship, and as point of view, through the trial transformation, deconstruction and restructuring the interaction concept, and through the self-interpretation of the text and dialogue with other scholars, hoping to produce new recognition and understanding of Teacher-pupil Interaction, to deepen the original meaning of Teacher-pupil Interaction, and provide a new mode of interaction and interaction strategies. " Interaction-Relationship " as the title of the research, segmenting the theory of Goffman's into "structure" and "strategy" two parts. "Structure" is mainly based on an interactive discussion of social relationships, the process of interaction mode building, and to shape an orderly and stable interaction structure, and to seek a universal interaction rules. "Strategy" concerned about the structure outside the order of action and destruction caused by the misuse of interaction-relationship, and interaction strategies used in the resumption of normal interaction. To establish the structure of interaction-relationship is to maintain the basis of social order, and the interaction strategies is the practical knowledge to complete the construction of interaction-relationship. The two are complementary. From an orderly situation to the conflict situation, and restore the ceremony, forming the cycles of the interaction course. Such "strategic interaction" mode providing another point of view and of a reference of value of the teacher-pupil interaction . The mode of interaction with particular emphasis by both the interaction of the "initiative", is committed to strategically plan to change the rules of interaction, and the two sides have the right to withdraw at any time to treat each other point of view of equality. To know each other as "strangers", so we were able to escape the framework of the role of teachers and students to think, given the appropriate respect for the other party without violation of privacy. Such interaction is with the nature of the game, undermine the repression and restrictions of the teachers and students in schools, adding to the fun of campus life.
