Abstract:
Until recently, escapism was generally seen as a negative phenomenon, due to its common conceptualization as an escape from reality; however, with the new model a more positive approach, distinguishing between self-suppression and self-expansion, began. In our study, we looked into the mechanisms underlying both components of escapism, where a sample of 147 students individually chose their escapist activity. Building on the two-dimensional conceptualization of escapism, we assumed that self-suppression would be associated with higher levels of self-alienation, while escapism as self-expansion would be related to higher levels of dispositional mindfulness and indirectly to a tendency to achieve flow. Results confirmed that self-suppression escapism and self-alienation share a positive correlation, with later also being a significant predictor of self-suppression escapism. However, contrary to our prediction, self-expansion escapism is not associated with dispositional mindfulness, nor does it represent a significant moderator in the relationship between self-expansion and flow. This study has extended the current understanding of escapist activities' complex nature in relation to psychological factors. Moreover, we contributed to the currently still sparse knowledge of escapism, and shed light on its positive side, which certainly exists, since escapism can lead not only to suppression of self but also to its enrichment and expansion.

Abstract:
The article deals with the problem of cyber escapism and the dangers posed by escaping from reality into virtual space. While the desire for escapism in itself does not pose a significant danger to the escapist, specific ways of escaping to the "otherworld" can cause harm. The Internet allows you to find the fastest and most cost-effective way of such escape, but it can also cause the loss of one's own identity and the loss of the user's connection with reality. The formulation of the problem is based on the work of the culturologist E. N. Shapinskaya, who drew attention to the negative consequences of escapist experience in the cyber environment. The problem is especially relevant nowadays, given the almost ubiquitous transition of social and professional life to "online". The author comes to the conclusion that as a solution to the problem, it is possible to consider the use of augmented reality technology, in which a person does not completely immerse himself in the virtual world, but integrates virtual images into the environment. Thus, the space is transformed and satisfies the need for "escape", a change of environment and activity. However, reality is not replaced by an artificial one, which avoids the problems associated with excessive use of cyberspace. Studies in which augmented reality would act as a method of solving the problem of cyber escapism have not been conducted before.

Abstract:
The stress and anxiety resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic has lead to a significant increase in escapist media-based coping. This paper examines the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on social media escapist activities by the students at the State University of Tirana. In total 52 undergraduate and graduate students aged 20-24 were involved in the study. The students reported 39 digital media involved in their escapist activities, with media sharing networks having a dominant role. From the analysis of their discussion of the motivations and different forms of escapist activities using social media, 5 different but interrelated discourses emerged: (1) Social media have both positive and negative aspects; (2) Social media escapism distorts reality; (3) Social media offer easy and affordable ways to escape; (4) Social media escapism needs to be managed to avoid addiction; and (5) Social media escapism enhances English language skills. The impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic through restrictions on socializing, face-to-face interaction and online teaching were discussed within and across the identified discourses. Increasing their communicative competence in English while interacting with people of different cultural background, including English native speakers was one of most the positive aspects in students’ discussions of social media escapism. Abstract:
The article presents the results of a study of Subjective quality of life and Psychological adaptation level among individuals with low, normal and high level of Escapism (N=329, 18-52 years old Russians from big cities). Four tests were applied including the new Escapism Scale. Individual with high level of Escapism have lower Subjective quality of life in several parameters — Stability in Country, Confidence in Future, Ecology, Social recognition, Interesting Job, Health and Active life, Internal Harmony and Inner Conflict absence, Privacy (as a Personal Space), Self-Confidence, (Subjective well-being Questionnaire, T. Savchenko, G. Golovina). ‘Excessive’ escapists also demonstrate lower level of psychological adaptation including Self-acceptance, Loyalty, Internality, Emotional Comfort, Intention to dominate (SPA Questionnaire, C. Rogers, R. Diamond). Because of that, Escapism can be characterized mainly as a compensational mechanism which emerges due to the reduced level of an individual’s adaptation to his/her social environment. The consistence of theoretical layout and empirical data obtained confirm the validity of presented Escapism Scale and its applicability for further empirical research.

Thus could they express, in diluted Aesopic terms, their discontent with Romania’s political evolution in the 1940’s and afterward, under the more acceptable mask of longing for other realms. Elvira Bogdan’s lyrical outbursts in Rome or on the Valley of the Loire and Olga Caba’s enthusiastic soliloquies in Scotland turned into double emphasis discourses under the restrictive travelling mode that prevailed before 1990. Abstract:
Excessive online behaviors refer to harmful or disproportionate use of digital network applications. Such behaviors are likely to be associated with escapist motives. Our aim was to analyze whether escapism predicts excessive gambling, excessive gaming, and excessive internet use over time. A longitudinal sample of Finnish residents aged 18–75 years (n = 1022, 51.27% male) was surveyed at three time points during the COVID-19 pandemic in 6-month intervals: April 2021 (Time 1), October–November 2021 (Time 2), and April–May 2022 (Time 3). Of the original Time 1 respondents, 66.80% took part in the surveys at both Time 2 and Time 3. All surveys included measures for excessive gambling (Problem Gambling Severity Index), excessive gaming (Internet Gaming Disorder Test), and excessive internet use (Compulsive Internet Use Scale). Three escapism-specific questions were used to construct a dedicated escapism variable. Socio-demographic variables, alcohol consumption, and psychological distress were used as controls. The study was conducted with multilevel regression analyses using hybrid models. Our research showed that escapism had strong within-person effects on excessive gambling, B = 0.18, p = 0.003; excessive gaming, B = 0.50, p < 0.001; and excessive internet use, B = 0.77, p < 0.001 over time. The between-person effect of escapism was demonstrated on excessive gaming B = 0.91, p < 0.001, and excessive internet use B = 0.61, p = 0.036. Adverse societal events and uncertain times can manifest in excessive online behaviors motivated by escapism, highlighting a need to focus prevention efforts on healthy coping methods.

Kakkos, Athanasios Tommy. "Escapism in Euripides." Thesis, McGill University, 1995. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=23219.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the form, meaning and development of the escapist theme in Euripides' tragedies. The dramatist's corpus reveals an intense preoccupation with escapism and exhibits it in a wide range of escape wishes and escape choral odes. Most of these, because they fail of their objective, point to the inability of the tragic hero to escape his or her fate as determined by the dark forces of tragedy. Escapism intensifies the well-known Euripidean element of pathos, but in some of the plays its use becomes quite sophisticated evoking irony, ambiguity and paradox. In this way, it sheds light upon the tragic event from a different perspective. In the end, however, the Euripidean oeuvre betrays a strong affirmation of reality in spite of its escapist tendencies. Euripides' innovative use of escapism is, in fact, an ingenious modification and adaptation of older poetic, and as this thesis argues, ritual forms. Finally, the pervasive presence of escapism in Euripides is not irrelevant to the wider political and social atmosphere of late fifth-century Athens.

Abstract:
A fantasy world, that exists only in our minds, provides us a place where we can mentally escape from everyday reality. Escapism, such as indulging in daydreams, allows us to experience comfort and makes us feel safe, eliminating feelings of insecurity and vulnerability. This study aims to use playfulness and reverie as a tool to access and confront mental discomforts. Transforming disturbing situations into an experience of reverie; a correction of unsatisfying reality, by converting a solid component of the real world into a desirable infinite form will provide alternative viewpoints. Throughout my work, this method has been employed to address personal phobias, violent conflicts, political insecurity, and racial inequality. It is my hope to employ daydreaming as a form of serious play to provide a new way of perceiving unsatisfying reality.

Van, Sittert Lambert Petrus. "ZOO : Animatechnic : Architecture as Escapism." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29928.

Full text
Abstract:
To seek the essence of architecture in the provision of physical control would be to reduce architecture to mere building1. This dissertation questions the accepted pre-eminence of the rational over the intuitive in architectural design. Further investigation into the question forms a themed theoretical discourse around the origins of architecture, or enclosure and the escapism provided by ornamentation. The question is not restricted to the current architectural context and is discussed and ordered by the title trilogy. The investigation departs from a mythical scale gradually focussing to the macro and micro theories, ending on a site contextual level. Anima is the feminine Latin root for ‘soul’ or ‘spirit’, also ‘animal life’ (related to a creature’s breath); Technic is from the Latin technicus which means ‘details’ and ‘methods’. Combined, the words anima and technic refer to an imaginative creative ability, mediation between the unconscious and conscious mind2. Animatechnic becomes a mythological state of process and becoming in which the art of making or representation blurs the boundary between the emotional artisan and the technician; it is further viewed as a simile to the origins of architecture and the art of enclosure. Architecture as Escapism presents the post-modern theoretical debate regarding representation in the current age of production and consumerism, where the authenticity of product and experience plays a vital role. Ornamentation and representation provides objects with narrative lines and places objects in a metaphorical position against each other. The relevance of this understanding to the dissertation is in a possible neo-archaic approach to inventiveness and meaning in an age of production devoid or illusive of sacred being or awareness. ZOO becomes the metaphysical space where the situations of enclosure and escapism accumulate in multiple forms, a place where man’s perceptions of authenticity and reality is challenged. The concepts within the ZOO situation crystallises in the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa (NZG). ZOO is regarded as a collective, a world within a world, a representation in itself of the post modern situation, a microcosm. NZG is the place where, the situations and conditions of the mythical and further theoretical discourse are staged. It is a place where contemporary Animal and Man meets; a landscape of enclosure, cages or artificially copied habitats and representations to provide escapism. ZOO is a space where the collection of Animal and Man can be observed on a global spectrum; the mythical tempus of Paradise, of primordial plenitude. The dissertation aims to communicate the interconnectedness of the trilogy and investigates, interprets and gives form to the discourse and the metaphors or analogies surrounding the theme on various theoretical scales. The project hopes to inform intuitive design approaches by documenting and illustrating the design process involved. The building is redesigned and reinterpreted throughout the process. The investigation should therefore, be seen as the near final synthesis of method or the becoming of a structure and not the rationalised drive to a product.

Abstract:
This study examines the possibility of creating original video-based content for the video-enabled iPod that was released in October 2005. Current trends show that existing content created for conventional media like television, cinema and computers are simply being ported over to this new medium. However, when this project began, none of the production studios are concentrating on creating content specifically for this medium, which has its own unique properties like portability, screen size and the ability to easily start and pause content as required. The purpose of this project is to prove that such medium-specific content can be created and made financially viable for the creators. Further, this hypothesis is put to the test by presenting it to a group of Ball State University students and their responses are examined in detail.

Abstract:
Historically in the United States people have sought perfection in society. In the 1700 and 1800s America's immigrants attempted to create utopian communities. In the 1960s and 1970s people formed cults in which, like this country's first Utopian communities, they have been unable to isolate themselves from reality and create a society without problems.During the 1980s and 1990s emerging militias signaled a dissatisfaction with the political and moral structure of the country. At the same time a second group of people began to escape to gated communities. Gated communities are often promoted as a means of escaping from the problems plaguing many communities today, especially crime. The results of the gated community escape movement are that America has a large portion of its population removing itself from taking any responsibility for America's social ills. This isolation is going to affect not only the "gated escapists", but local governments and society overall. If municipalities address the reasons driving people to live behind walls the walls will no longer be needed.

This work will focus on Orkut, your identity tools and it idiosyncratic appropriations that each individual produce to represent themselves in that virtual space. Takes the premise that, by your organization, Orkut is the locus where individuals can try to build an unity, even in a discursive way. As a space constituted by immersion on narrative, this site establishes it own grammar, turning into identity support. Individuals take it self this grammar and subvert his rules. This creates new languages and potential resources to communication. In sites of coded universe as Orkut, users appropriate technology as a way to produce subjective.

Abstract:
The relatively new phenomenon of binge watching presents a dramatic shift from the norm of traditional television viewing. However, is this ubiquitously popular media marathon that contains negative connotations really bad for you? A survey administered to 157 television binge-watchers identified the role of stress and self-control in influencing both the gratifications sought and the consequences of binge watching through the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis. The current study found that binge watching to avoid problems is a commonly employed strategy for individuals to cope with stress. However, engaging in binge-watching behavior as a coping mechanism to purposefully avoid problems can result in feelings of guilt and regret. It is also surprising that self-control has no impact on one's binge watching gratifications. The findings of this thesis encourage future researchers and binge watching lovers to view this new behavior from a new perspective and to practice it with caution.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the "Closed Housing Project" (CHP), a building type found in the Colombian capital of Bogota. Responding to Bogota's problem of insecurity, CHPs are groups of dwellings that are organised around, or within, outdoor communal grounds closed to the public and surveyed by an armed guard.
The CHP, however, is much more than gates and guns. Due to its enclosure, it is isolated from Bogota's troubled urban setting. As a result, the CHP has become a marketing phenomena packaged and promoted by developers as an escape from many of the social problems of living in Bogota. The consuming public has accepted this option and popular culture now perceives the CHP as a necessary and appealing way of life.
Mostly drawing from the Bogota architectural press, this study argues that the insular nature of the CHP makes a return to earlier housing types typically found in Bogota, and thus is evidence of architectural continuity in the city. The thesis also analyses the role of the CHP type in contemporary consumer culture.

In Economic and Business Trends Shaping the Future. Ss Cyril and Methodius University, Faculty of Economics-Skopje, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.47063/ebtsf.2020.0037.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the four realms of experience economy model (education, entertainment, escapism, and esthetic) and to examine their impact on wine tourists’ arousal, memory and loyalty. The experience economy has recently emerged as a relevant framework for understanding the consumers’ experience across different industries. Wineries are facing new challenges where tourists are in search for exciting, unique, and memorable experiences. Consequently, wine institutions should strive to create desirable experiential environment as an essential source of differentiation and competitive advantage on the market. Data were collected from online surveys completed by 158 wine tourists in Macedonia. This study employed multiple regression analyses to test the developed hypotheses. The obtained results indicate that there is a significant and positive relationship among education and esthetics as experience dimensions and arousal and memory, separately. The others two experience dimensions are not significantly related neither to arousal, nor to memory. The results also indicate that loyalty is significantly and positively determined by entertainment and negatively influenced by escapism. The obtained results suggest that Macedonian wineries should emphasis the educational and esthetic aspects in their tourist offers in order to improve tourists’ arousal and memory. Understanding the concept of experience economy within the wine industry will lead to contemporary applications for all the involved parties.

Abstract:
Japanese animation or anime is one of the most popular and well-received types of Japanese popular cultures, translated into various languages, rendering these globally renowned. A plethora of studies has shown that interest in anime has led students to start learning the Japanese language. However, to date, studies examining the influence of anime consumption on Japanese language students, particularly in Malaysian contexts, are scarce. The present study aims to identify the effect of anime consumption on Malaysian undergraduates who enrolled in beginner Japanese language courses at three public universities in Malaysia. A total of 150 undergraduate students who are interested in anime participated in this study. The data was collected using an online survey and was coded and categorized by themes. The data revealed that most students are influenced by the characters, settings, and storylines of anime. The main positive effects are; broadening their knowledge on Japan and its culture, deepening their interest on Japanese language, strengthening relationships with family members and friends, releasing stress, instilling positive moral values and enhancing imagination and creativity. However, poor time management, negative moral values, negative emotion, antisocial behavior, escapism and buying characters’ goods are mentioned as the main adverse effects. The results of this study gave insightful perspectives to those working in Japanese language and cultural pedagogies.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of different dimensions of the camping tourism experience on satisfaction and loyalty. To achieve the purpose of this research, it was necessary to adjust and validate the measurement scale of the tourism experience in campsites. Furthermore, the goal was to investigate the relationship between camping tourists’ satisfaction and their loyalty to the camp. Methodology – An analysis of the recent literature on the topic of tourism experience and camping tourism was performed. Empirical research was conducted on a convenience sample of 143 visitors to campsites. Descriptive and multivariate statistics were used in the data analysis. Reliability analysis and exploratory factor analysis were applied. Hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analysis. Data analysis was performed using the software package IBM SPSS Statistic Version 26. Findings – The results of empirical research show that of the four extracted dimensions of the camping tourism experience, three have a positive and significant impact on tourist satisfaction and loyalty. These are education, escapism and aesthetics, while entertainment has no significant impact. Contribution – This research represents a starting point for further research about the camping tourism experience. The scale for measuring the camping tourism experience was validated and can be used in further research. Also, the results can help managers to develop marketing strategies and tactics, as the determinants of the tourism experience of camping tourists have been established.

Abstract:
The article is the first in Russia to present sociologically correct (relative to the general population) and simultaneously psychologically profound results of 2 All-Russian Internet surveys: screening-diagnostics of the level of resistance/vulnerability to Internet addiction in Russia and its federal districts (2017: n = 3 007, ages 10-40); identification of words - markers of values for norm and risk groups (2018: n = 144, ages 18-28). Methods: Internet addiction test (A. E. Zichkina), self-reports on the duration of the offline period per year, 16-FLO (R. Kettell, MD self-evaluation scale, B intellect scale), ‘Short portrait questionnaire of the Big Five (B5-10)’ (M.S. Egorova, O.B Parshikova), ‘Existence’ (A. Langle, K. Orgler, S.V. Krivtsova), author’s questionnaire, Deception scale. Results: 3/4 citizens of the Russian Federation fall within a normal range, but only 1/4 have no signs of internet addiction. Contrary to social prejudice and statistics from English-language studies, Internet addiction is least pronounced among 18-21-year-old Russian respondents (when they are virtually active). Normally young people are characterised by the needs for Career, Care, the ability to Manage/Control and Influence events/decisions, anticipate internet escapism when they lose their Meaning, Wisdom or Interest. The risk group includes 8.6 % males, and 23.6 % females. Internet addicts 2.3 % (coinciding with global statistics): twice as many women (different from global statistics). Girls under 14, teenagers, men aged 22-25 and women aged 30-35 are at risk and among those considered to be Internet addicts. Adults in this group develop existential indecisiveness, have unmet status-related claims (specifically Respect) and a strongly overestimated willingness to use coping strategies in reality instead of virtually. Internet addicts are most numerous in the Central Federal District (4.6 %), with the highest risk group in the Far East (37.8 %).
