Kakkos, Athanasios Tommy. "Escapism in Euripides." Thesis, McGill University, 1995. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=23219.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the form, meaning and development of the escapist theme in Euripides' tragedies. The dramatist's corpus reveals an intense preoccupation with escapism and exhibits it in a wide range of escape wishes and escape choral odes. Most of these, because they fail of their objective, point to the inability of the tragic hero to escape his or her fate as determined by the dark forces of tragedy. Escapism intensifies the well-known Euripidean element of pathos, but in some of the plays its use becomes quite sophisticated evoking irony, ambiguity and paradox. In this way, it sheds light upon the tragic event from a different perspective. In the end, however, the Euripidean oeuvre betrays a strong affirmation of reality in spite of its escapist tendencies. Euripides' innovative use of escapism is, in fact, an ingenious modification and adaptation of older poetic, and as this thesis argues, ritual forms. Finally, the pervasive presence of escapism in Euripides is not irrelevant to the wider political and social atmosphere of late fifth-century Athens.

Pairoj-Boriboon, Tanruk. "Escapism: Indulging in Daydreams." VCU Scholars Compass, 2018. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5463.

Abstract:
A fantasy world, that exists only in our minds, provides us a place where we can mentally escape from everyday reality. Escapism, such as indulging in daydreams, allows us to experience comfort and makes us feel safe, eliminating feelings of insecurity and vulnerability. This study aims to use playfulness and reverie as a tool to access and confront mental discomforts. Transforming disturbing situations into an experience of reverie; a correction of unsatisfying reality, by converting a solid component of the real world into a desirable infinite form will provide alternative viewpoints. Throughout my work, this method has been employed to address personal phobias, violent conflicts, political insecurity, and racial inequality. It is my hope to employ daydreaming as a form of serious play to provide a new way of perceiving unsatisfying reality.

Van, Sittert Lambert Petrus. "ZOO : Animatechnic : Architecture as Escapism." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29928.

Full text
Abstract:
To seek the essence of architecture in the provision of physical control would be to reduce architecture to mere building1. This dissertation questions the accepted pre-eminence of the rational over the intuitive in architectural design. Further investigation into the question forms a themed theoretical discourse around the origins of architecture, or enclosure and the escapism provided by ornamentation. The question is not restricted to the current architectural context and is discussed and ordered by the title trilogy. The investigation departs from a mythical scale gradually focussing to the macro and micro theories, ending on a site contextual level. Anima is the feminine Latin root for ‘soul’ or ‘spirit’, also ‘animal life’ (related to a creature’s breath); Technic is from the Latin technicus which means ‘details’ and ‘methods’. Combined, the words anima and technic refer to an imaginative creative ability, mediation between the unconscious and conscious mind2. Animatechnic becomes a mythological state of process and becoming in which the art of making or representation blurs the boundary between the emotional artisan and the technician; it is further viewed as a simile to the origins of architecture and the art of enclosure. Architecture as Escapism presents the post-modern theoretical debate regarding representation in the current age of production and consumerism, where the authenticity of product and experience plays a vital role. Ornamentation and representation provides objects with narrative lines and places objects in a metaphorical position against each other. The relevance of this understanding to the dissertation is in a possible neo-archaic approach to inventiveness and meaning in an age of production devoid or illusive of sacred being or awareness. ZOO becomes the metaphysical space where the situations of enclosure and escapism accumulate in multiple forms, a place where man’s perceptions of authenticity and reality is challenged. The concepts within the ZOO situation crystallises in the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa (NZG). ZOO is regarded as a collective, a world within a world, a representation in itself of the post modern situation, a microcosm. NZG is the place where, the situations and conditions of the mythical and further theoretical discourse are staged. It is a place where contemporary Animal and Man meets; a landscape of enclosure, cages or artificially copied habitats and representations to provide escapism. ZOO is a space where the collection of Animal and Man can be observed on a global spectrum; the mythical tempus of Paradise, of primordial plenitude. The dissertation aims to communicate the interconnectedness of the trilogy and investigates, interprets and gives form to the discourse and the metaphors or analogies surrounding the theme on various theoretical scales. The project hopes to inform intuitive design approaches by documenting and illustrating the design process involved. The building is redesigned and reinterpreted throughout the process. The investigation should therefore, be seen as the near final synthesis of method or the becoming of a structure and not the rationalised drive to a product.

Abstract:
This study examines the possibility of creating original video-based content for the video-enabled iPod that was released in October 2005. Current trends show that existing content created for conventional media like television, cinema and computers are simply being ported over to this new medium. However, when this project began, none of the production studios are concentrating on creating content specifically for this medium, which has its own unique properties like portability, screen size and the ability to easily start and pause content as required. The purpose of this project is to prove that such medium-specific content can be created and made financially viable for the creators. Further, this hypothesis is put to the test by presenting it to a group of Ball State University students and their responses are examined in detail.

Abstract:
Historically in the United States people have sought perfection in society. In the 1700 and 1800s America's immigrants attempted to create utopian communities. In the 1960s and 1970s people formed cults in which, like this country's first Utopian communities, they have been unable to isolate themselves from reality and create a society without problems.During the 1980s and 1990s emerging militias signaled a dissatisfaction with the political and moral structure of the country. At the same time a second group of people began to escape to gated communities. Gated communities are often promoted as a means of escaping from the problems plaguing many communities today, especially crime. The results of the gated community escape movement are that America has a large portion of its population removing itself from taking any responsibility for America's social ills. This isolation is going to affect not only the "gated escapists", but local governments and society overall. If municipalities address the reasons driving people to live behind walls the walls will no longer be needed.

Wang, Weipu. "Is Binge Watching Bad for You? Escapism, Stress, Self-Controland Gratifications?" BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7757.

Full text
Abstract:
The relatively new phenomenon of binge watching presents a dramatic shift from the norm of traditional television viewing. However, is this ubiquitously popular media marathon that contains negative connotations really bad for you? A survey administered to 157 television binge-watchers identified the role of stress and self-control in influencing both the gratifications sought and the consequences of binge watching through the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis. The current study found that binge watching to avoid problems is a commonly employed strategy for individuals to cope with stress. However, engaging in binge-watching behavior as a coping mechanism to purposefully avoid problems can result in feelings of guilt and regret. It is also surprising that self-control has no impact on one's binge watching gratifications. The findings of this thesis encourage future researchers and binge watching lovers to view this new behavior from a new perspective and to practice it with caution.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the "Closed Housing Project" (CHP), a building type found in the Colombian capital of Bogota. Responding to Bogota's problem of insecurity, CHPs are groups of dwellings that are organised around, or within, outdoor communal grounds closed to the public and surveyed by an armed guard.
The CHP, however, is much more than gates and guns. Due to its enclosure, it is isolated from Bogota's troubled urban setting. As a result, the CHP has become a marketing phenomena packaged and promoted by developers as an escape from many of the social problems of living in Bogota. The consuming public has accepted this option and popular culture now perceives the CHP as a necessary and appealing way of life.
Mostly drawing from the Bogota architectural press, this study argues that the insular nature of the CHP makes a return to earlier housing types typically found in Bogota, and thus is evidence of architectural continuity in the city. The thesis also analyses the role of the CHP type in contemporary consumer culture.

Abstract:
In the immediate post-Second World War period, London's criminal cultures generated popular understandings of fantasy and cinematic escapism as a modern mode of life, a pleasure-seeking activity and a form of rationality. These narratives centred on increasingly visible but enigmatic genres of urban transgression: notably the phenomenon of spivery. Mixing petty crime, gambling and the black market with proletarian dandyism, urban waywardness and celebrity posturing, the cultural iconography of spivery was also associated with the deviant lifestyles of confidence tricksters, army deserters, good-time girls and mass murderers. Drawing on cinema, popular literature, courtroom drama, autobiography and psychiatry, this thesis explores how debates about the escapist mentalities of the spiv shaped the public discussions of crime as a socio-aesthetic practice. The central aim is to explore the cultural and symbolic associations between street-wise forms of deviant illusion and the cinematic representation of fantasising criminals in 1940s London. The thesis reveals how contemporary historical actors and cultural institutions understood the imagination as a popular and contested form of knowledge about the self, social change and erotic life. The method interweaves intertextual analysis of a key cinematic subgenre of crime, 'spiv films', with a historical focus on two 'true crime' stories: the cleft chin murder (1944) and the serial killings carried out by John George Haigh (1944-45). Utilising the criminals' self-confessions, trial transcripts, autobiography and popular journalism, these cases studies show how spivery was rooted in the experience and representation of everyday metropolitan life. The interdisciplinary examination of cinematic text and historical evidence emphasises how Hollywood aesthetics and indigenous national culture co-determined the public construction of 1940s crime as an embodiment of the contradictions of post-war British modernity.

This is done in order to determine if these are reproduced in an online society consisting of thousands of players, which of the forms of capital are of outmost importance and how the accumulation of these affect the players lives using qualitative methods. Results show that the forms of capital in-game carry similar characteristics to the accumulation of such in the real world but are not transferable to the real world to the same extent. Which of the forms of capital was most of importance than others was not evident from the results, however, the empirical material shows of an interrelationship between the accumulation of capital between the dimensions; real world and game world.

Myers, Megan Kathryn. "Becoming Faramir: Escapism as Responsibility and Hope through Adaptation and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8492.

Full text
Abstract:
When Peter Jackson sought to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings to film, many fans worried about the changes that could be made to such a beloved story. Though the response to the films was generally positive, all three movies did have their detractors. Many of the complaints centered on his badly adapting the source material, specifically the characters. When Jackson released The Two Towers, fans were outraged further by how Jackson had handled Faramir. However, these interpretations of The Lord of the Rings and Faramir are a narrow evaluation of the larger problem facing fan and scholarly communities, that being, the devaluation of Escapism and what Tolkien calls, “escapist texts,” in today’s society. Tolkien claims that the main purpose of escapist texts is that they allow audiences to recover previous experiences that gave them feelings of happiness or joy. Despite criticism of Escapism, escapists texts don’t urge people to abandon their lives and seek something else. Rather, escapist texts encourage audiences to identify with and empathize with the characters represented in these texts, in order to return to their lives and accept responsibility for and connection with other people. When audiences see The Lord of the Rings and Faramir (whether in book form or in film form), they identify and connect with these stories and characters and seek responsibility in their own lives, which brings them, and those around them, hope.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the concept of cosplay by critically engaging earlier theories that have claimed cosplay to be a form of escapism for fans of Japanese manga and animé. Theories have so far been concerned mainly with identifying cosplay as a type of theatre. By interviewing active cosplayers in focus groups, this thesis instead focuses on the ways in which cosplay functions as an arena for identity-creation. By looking at theories of identity, the thesis has analysed how identity is created, not by an individual, but in a reciprocal relationship with social groups. Cosplay is an element around which social groupings are built and through complex social structuring identity is created by attaching one self to the group. The group is structured by the amount of symbolic capital each member possesses, which is to say that knowledge about the stories within the group, and social relationships are determining the structure of the group. By looking at the structure of the group, we are able to gain insight into the question of cosplay as an object for identity-creation, and by looking at the interactions in the focus groups we are furthermore able to actively analyse the distribution of capital. This thesis thus asserts that cosplay does not function as a simple form of escapism that allows for cosplayer to escape their mundane lives, but that it is instead an important field for the creation of identity for the fans of manga and cosplay.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a chronologically comparative study of fairy culture and belief in early modern and Victorian Scotland. Using fairy culture as a case study, I examine the adaptability of folk culture by exploring whether beliefs and legends surrounding fairies in the early modern era continued into the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a single culture system, or whether the Victorian fairy revival was a distinct cultural phenomenon. Based on contextual, physical, and behavioral comparisons, this thesis argues the former; while select aspects of fairy culture developed and adapted to serve the needs and values of Victorian society, its resurgence and popularization was largely predicated on the notion that it was a remnant of the past, therefore directly linking the nineteenth century interpretation to the early modern. In each era, fairy culture serves as a window into the major tensions complicating Scottish identity formation. In the early modern era, these largely centered around witchcraft, theology, and the Reformation, while notions of cultural heritage, national mythology, and escapist fantasy dominated Victorian fairy discourse. A comparative study on fairy culture demonstrates how cultural traditions can help link vastly different time periods and complicate traditional conceptions about periodization. Ultimately, this thesis reveals how issues of class impacted the popularization and persistence of fairy culture across both eras, reflecting ongoing discussions about Scottish identity.

Forster, Jason John. "Commodified Evil's Wayward Children: Black Metal and Death Metal as Purveyors of an Alternative Form of Modern Escapism." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Philosophy and Religious Studies, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/966.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on Black Metal and Death Metal music as complimentary forms of commodified evil, which, in contrast to most other forms of commodified evil, provide an alternative form of modern escapism. In particular, it demonstrates that in glorifying evil their respective natures and essences effectively suggest to us that the ability to overcome our problems, and cope with the world's atrocities, lies not in the vain hope that justice will prevail, but rather, in embracing evil and actively cultivating a desensitizing ethos of utter indifference to the plight and suffering of others. In addition, because Black Metal and Death Metal have both generated their own distinct sub-cultures, which are predominantly populated by marginalized youths, this study simultaneous begs the question: What is it that motivates them to produce and/or endorse forms of music, and thereby become members of sub-cultures, which ostensibly promote such a negative world view? Consequently, it also demonstrates some of the important ways in which they can serve to help their proponents regain a sense of power and control over their lives. It then concludes by looking at Black Metal and Death Metal's (potential) social effects - both negative and positive.

Abstract:
This study examines how pop culture fandoms are formed, based on five communications theories: Escapism, Mood Management, Parasocial Relationships, Identification, and Social Capital. The researcher examined the Harry Potter fandom specifically because of its global pervasiveness. Using Q Methodology, 47 respondents fell into one of four categories: Relationship Experts, Happy Introverts, Identifying Isolationists, and Isolated Self-regulators. Relationship Experts like Harry Potter because of parasocial relationships with the characters as well as the story's capacity for escapism, and Happy Introverts focus on liking Harry Potter for their own enjoyment (not that of others) and mood management. Identifying Isolationists like Harry Potter because they identify with the characters and enjoy discussing the books with those around them, while Isolated Self-regulators do not have any parasocial relationships and focus on the books' mood management capacity. It is interesting to note that Escapism played a supporting (but never leading) role in each of these Factors. All respondents agree that Harry Potter has been, and will continue to be, an important part of their lives. It is hoped that this conclusion can form the foundation of future popular culture studies.

Full text
Abstract:
Anxiety disorders are some of the most prevalent mental illnesses in the United States, and young adults have developed a variety of coping mechanisms to deal with their symptoms. One of the most common is escapism, or the act of escaping reality by delving into alternate stimuli, fantasies, or media content, but this often leads to social or emotional isolation. Cooperative roleplaying games, such as Dungeons and Dragons, can alleviate symptoms of anxiety disorders while facilitating social interaction through escapism, creative thinking, play, and community building. The companion piece to this paper, Reflections of Fate, is a D&D 5e quest specifically designed with challenges and storylines to further these potentially healing effects.

Edwards, Lydia Jenny. "Dressing the past : historical escapism' in the costume design of Herbert Beerbohm Tree productions at Her/His Majesty's Theatre, London, 1898-1912." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.550306.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates historical interpretation in late nineteenth and early twentieth century stage costume, approached through a study of Herbert Beerbohm Tree's (1852- 1917) productions. The concept of 'Historical Escapism', an idea developed by the author, will be put forward as an alternative to the more commonly used 'Historical Realism' as a more suitable and all-encompassing phrase. Tree staged many historical eras and covered wildly varying themes, from Shakespearean tragedy to modem comedies. To a large extent the success of these plays depended upon the beauty of the 'stage tableaux' presented. At first glance, surviving stage photographs might seem to be perfectly straightforward representations of a given historical period. On closer inspection it becomes clear that they were, on the contrary, heavily influenced by the contemporary fashionable line-and overwhelmingly so in costume. It is in this respect that the idea of 'Historical Escapism' will be used as an academic theory. Whilst there is a wealth of information on Tree from a theatrical, performance and literary history point of view, practically no scholarly research has been undertaken from the perspective of the fashion and art historian. A practice-as-research technique will be employed here to definitively illustrate to what extent these costumes mirrored or influenced contemporary dress-and therefore how nineteenth and twentieth century practitioners referenced and re-imagined both their past and their own contemporaneousness. This thesis will look at four plays, one costume from each discussed in detail, coupled with an overview of the cultural climate into which the play was launched, and the implications of Tree's staging choices on the art and fashion of the period. Providing such an overview will lead us to a consideration of the reception of the costumes by the audience and press, with emphasis on whether the--often predicted- resurgence of historical fashions in mainstream and couture dress actually happened. Throughout, the question of how these influences were modified or exaggerated in the quest for Historical Realism, familiarity, extravagance and poignant nostalgia on the nineteenth and early twentieth century British stage will be discussed.

Abstract:
Using psychoanalysis as a theoretical framework, this essay examines the subject of escapism in The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Defense mechanisms of the ego, first thought of by Sigmund Freud, allow for a clearer understanding of what takes place during the plot. By taking the author’s background into account, along with clues in the plot of the novel, a more realistic reading of the novel is made possible instead of a supernatural take. A psychoanalytic perspective allows the essay to explore why and how the protagonist chooses to escape in the novel. The main focus of the analysis is how the protagonist of the novel carries the theme of escapism with increased intensity as the plot progresses. The essay considers why and how Dorian chooses to escape reality and utilizes the theoretical framework for two defense mechanisms used as an aid during escapist activities. Dorian progressively uses the defense mechanisms known as repression and rationalization to support his escapist behavior and protect his ego from anxiety derived from internal and external conflicts.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore ways in which ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers introduce different forms of literary writing such as poems, plays, fiction, genres and fantasy in the ESL classroom. The main method used was semi-structured interviews with six upper secondary ESL teachers in the South of Sweden. The interview questions were analyzed taking into account current research within the area, and further based on our own experience. The benefits of using the fantasy genre in teaching was one of the main focuses for this study. The compiled results showed varying strategies to teaching fiction in general. Only fifty percent of the interviewed teachers would actively have chosen the fantasy genre in their teaching practice. However, the interviewees saw potential beneficial outcomes from using the fantasy genre. All but one would consider incorporating the fantasy genre in their future teaching. Despite the negative view on fantasy being an unhealthy escapism, the positive effects outweigh the negative. In conclusion, the results and the analysis are in line with the established author Lloyd Alexander who states the following: “Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It’s a way of understanding it.”

Abstract:
History welcomed the screwball comedy genre in 1934, a time where cinema was in urgent need of providing escapism to audiences victim of the Great Depression. Screwball films, therefore, chose to underline the distinction between social classes and to emphasise on the imperfections of the upper class. The following thesis aims to determine how Depression screwballs (screwball comedies released from 1934 to 1938) used their narrative power to establish this distinction between opposed social classes and how this reflects the undeniable importance of an overlooked genre. It is with a socio-historical approach, personal analyses and observations, that the following research has been conducted. In conclusion, it has been recognised that the genre drew its importance, not only in the way it represents social classes but also how it depicts their mutual interactions, therefore forming a significant whole.

Abstract:
This essay discusses the effects of mass culture on the Loman family in Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman. The focus is to identify whether conformation to mass culture and alienation have caused the characters to be lonely and to give up what they enjoy and to fall in line with a system where individuality is replaced by totality. The theoretical framework used is the Frankfurt School’s critical theory which further developed Karl Marx’s socialist economic theory by putting an emphasis on the role of media and culture. The Frankfurt School critical theory purports that people in a mass culture society are estranged from themselves and others as large corporations and machines eradicate individual skills. Consumerism and meaningless media control and keep fatigued workers happy in their leisure time and thus distract them from starting a revolution. Advertising and entertainment create heroes to be revered which leads to a society where people strive for success, but this also results in competition and further estrangement. The conclusion is that the behaviour of the Loman family members is a result of conforming to the expectations of a mass culture society. Willy and Biff fail in their professional fields as they are not engaged in the manual work they are qualified for and that would fulfil their true needs. The constant effort to live up to expectations leads to immoralities, lies, contradictions, and loneliness. A false consciousness conveyed through media has indoctrinated a belief that someone who is not successful should be excluded from society. Willy’s escape after his own and his sons’ failures is suicide.

Morgan, William J. "Escaping from homelessness." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2011. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/49320/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the question of what helps the homeless to escape from homelessness. It comprises an empirical paper, a systematic literature review and a paper reflecting on the experience of conducting research with once-homeless men. The empirical paper details a qualitative exploration of the experience of escaping from homelessness for five once-homeless men. Semi-structured interviews were carried out and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Emergent themes were: life breaking in, decision to change, bad past and good present, better future. Life breaking in considered how life events and relationships 'broke into' cycles of homelessness and drug abuse participants were caught in. Their combined effect seemed to be to bring participants to a ‘turning point’, where they made a clear decision to change. Participants' relationship with their past, present and future seemed key in maintaining their escape. Escape from homelessness was discussed in terms of identity change, especially the need to repair a broken identity. The systematic literature review evaluates the evidence for the effectiveness of therapeutic communities (TCs) for dually-diagnosed homeless. PsycINFO, Web of Science, ASSIA and PubMed were searched using terms relating to therapeutic community, homelessness and effectiveness. A total of 113 unique articles were retrieved and of these ten met inclusion criteria and were reviewed. The review found that TCs with adaptations for patients with mental illness, in addition to substance dependency, led to small improvements in substance abuse, mental health and housing outcomes. However, these effects were short-lived and few were still present after a year. In the reflective paper, the experience of conducting research, as a therapist, with once-homeless men was reflected on and the question of what therapists bring to research was considered. While therapists may struggle with some aspects of clinical research, they bring a range of skills and experience to this endeavour.

Abstract:
This project aims to create physicalambience for escapism, that can take place in a variety of ways. Inmoderation it can be a healthy habit, that in times of fast pace of life, hectic schedules and information overload, can help us keep our sanity. The building is located in heart of Stockholm, on the waters oflake Mälaren, by the forgotten part of Gamla Stan – the infamousother exit of the subway.  This project tries to intertwine reality with fantasy in a form of a new culture house – a public institution of our time. In the age of celebration of individualism on one hand and affirmation of communication, teamwork and cooperation on the other, this project aims to reflect those two natures of a contemporary person and translate them into architecture. Therefore one can find a sequence of spaces for individualistic, introvert, spiritual escapes, as well as rooms for extrovert activities, places for people to gather and reconnect in an analogue way, tête-à-tête, in times of prevailing digital communication. The building is located in the middle of the capital, but aside the main focus. Jetting out from land, part is submerged, half above water. What is underwater is solid, austere, opaque, concrete. What is above is light, flexible, wooden, translucent. It serves the individual, but can host masses. Architecture mirrors the society and zeitgeist of our times. Hence this projects reflects the contradictions that we impose on ourselves and are expected of us. One has to be strong, but gentle; spontaneous, but disciplined; social, but self-aware.Therefore one can find in this project set of binary architectural qualities: intimate and overwhelming spaces, solemn and lively, warm light and blue light, open perspectives and framed views…

Malo-Fletcher, Natalie. "Ethically Authentic: Escaping Egoism Through Relational Authenticity." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/19885.

Full text
Abstract:
Philosophers who show interest in authenticity tend to narrowly focus on its capacity to help people evade conformity and affirm individuality, a simplistic reduction that neglects authenticity’s moral potential and gives credence to the many critics who dismiss it as a euphemism for excessive individualism. Yet when conceived ethically, authenticity can also allow for worthy human flourishing without falling prey to conformity’s opposite extreme—egoism. This thesis proposes a relational conception of authenticity that can help prevent the often destructive excess of egoism while also offsetting the undesirable deficiency of heteronomy, concertedly moving agents towards socially responsible living. It demonstrates how authenticity necessarily has ethical dimensions when rooted in existentialist and dialogical frameworks. It also defines egoism as a form of self-deception rooted in flawed logic that cannot be considered “authentic” by relational standards. Relational authenticity recognizes the interpersonal relationships and social engagements that imbue meaning into agents’ lives, fostering a balance between personal ambitions and social obligations, and enabling more consistently moral lifestyles.

In this thesis we present Bolt, a novel system for escaping infinite loops. If a user suspects that an executing program is stuck in an infinite loop, the user can use the Bolt user interface, which attaches to the running process and determines if the program is executing in an infinite loop. If that is the case, the user can direct the interface to automatically explore multiple strategies to escape the infinite loop, restore the responsiveness of the program, and recover useful output. Bolt operates on stripped x86 and x64 binaries, analyzes both single-thread and multi-threaded programs, dynamically attaches to the program as-needed, dynamically detects the loops in a program and creates program state checkpoints to enable exploration of different escape strategies. This makes it possible for Bolt to detect and escape infinite loops in off-the-shelf software, without available source code, or overhead in standard production use.

Abstract:
Statistical graphics are often augmented by the use of color coding information contained in some variable. When this involves the shading of areas (and not only points or lines) - e.g., as in bar plots, pie charts, mosaic displays or heatmaps - it is important that the colors are perceptually based and do not introduce optical illusions or systematic bias. Here, we discuss how the perceptually-based Hue-Chroma-Luminance (HCL) color space can be used for deriving suitable color palettes for coding categorical data (qualitative palettes) and numerical variables (sequential and diverging palettes).

This study focuses on a discursive analysis of the institution and representation of Professional Education (PE) in Brazil. The documents from which we elect our analysis consist of Decree No. 7566/1909, Article 129 of the Federal Constitution of 1937 and Law 12,513/2011 Pronatec institution. The analysis takes into account the interweaving of linguistic materiality with the imaginary formations of the subjects represented in it, and the discursive memory. To do this, we mobilize the principles and procedures used by French Discourse Analysis. Production processes of this discourse were investigated, paying attention to the constitution and to the specificity of sense relations in the various documents, taking into account their socio-historical conditions. The study is divided into four chapters: two for the production of a reading of the epistemological framework and two, the discussion of an interpretative procedure. The analysis identified socio-ideological and imaginary determinations involved in the construction of the discourse of PE, related not only to the institution, but also to the concreteness of the social relations of contemporary without, however, rule out the possibility of leaks.

Sturrock, Robert C. "Factors associated with inmate escapes from correctional institutions." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6938.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study is to examine the factors which might be related to escapes from correctional institutions. Static and dynamic/situational factors were analyzed. Data were collected on escapees and non-escapees. The escapee sample consisted of 35 inmates who had escaped from federal (medium and maximum security) correctional institutions between 1990-04-01 and 1992-03-31. The escapee sample was compared to a random sample of inmates (N = 35) who did not escape during the same period, so that static variables which might differentiate the two groups could be identified. Analyses of the results of static factors showed that significant differences were found between escapee and non-escapee groups. Escapees were more frequently found to have had a history of the following: property offences as the major offence, parole revocation, escape, federal term, drug/alcohol abuse, and institutional misconduct. Escapees were serving significantly longer sentences, were younger, and had more previous criminal convictions. They served an average length of sentence of 5.7 years prior to escape. Among some cases in which escapees and/or staff did identify the factors precipitating the escapes, the following factors were noted: family problems, parole problems, problems with other inmates, outstanding criminal charges, or institutional administrative problems. Moreover, approximately one-quarter of all escapees were under the influence at the time of escape. Slightly over one-quarter had recent parole revocations. Almost one-third had received recent transfers prior to escape. The majority of escapes were planned. Approximately three-quarters of the escapees fled with 1 or more other inmates. Most of the escapees absconded during the evening hours. Findings from this study showed that both static and dynamic/situational factors should be taken into account when explaining escape behaviour. Escape behaviour can be best explained by a combination of prisonization theory, rational choice theory, moral self-transcendence, and the cognitive model. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mercury is the tiniest planet in the solar system and that closest tothe Sun. It has a similar magnetosphere like the Earth, which to firstorder can be described as a magnetic dipole. The center of the dipoleis shifted 0.2 Mercury radii toward north, hence, the magnetic strengthare not equal at same latitude on the north and the south hemisphere. This asymmetric magnetosphere in reference to Mercury's equatorialplan, leads to the consequences that only some of the photoelectronsemitted from the south surface will reach the conjugate surface, andsome of them will mirror, whereas all the photoelectrons from the northwill reach the south surface. This phenomenon induces a potential difference,an electric field, and a current. It is the aim of this project thatto study the structure of Mercury's magnetosphere, the distribution ofthe photoelectrons, the electric field and the photoelectron currents.

Abstract:
Roma in former Czechoslovakia have historically experienced economic and political marginalisation and been treated and portrayed as inferior to ethnic Czechs and Slovaks. Roma thereby became perceived as different from non-Roma citizens, as not belonging to the Czech or Slovak nation, as an 'exception'. The post-socialist transition produced economic precarity, new inequalities, and a climate of rising nationalist sentiments in Central and Eastern Europe. The perception of Roma as not having the same rights as ethnic Czechs or Slovaks to access state care became even more salient than during the socialist period. Following the enlargement of the European Union in 2004, Roma are now able to move freely across EU borders and to find employment and settle in the United Kingdom. Migration to the UK, including Leeds, offered Roma new economic opportunities as well as the promise of escaping ethnic stigmatisation. It seemed to offer the possibility to lead what I refer to as a 'normal life' as equal citizens. This thesis is based on ethnographic research among Czech and Slovak Roma in Leeds. It reveals the processes that contribute to Roma becoming defined as an exception after migrating to Leeds, and looks at the ways in which Roma resist this. It recounts the interactions that Roma have with different aspects of state care, namely welfare provision, services and projects aimed at improving the well-being of Roma, and with non-Roma Czech and Slovak interpreters. Some Roma in Leeds have converted to a Roma Pentecostal Church, the Life and Light. In this thesis I argue that by providing material support to Roma, both converts and non-converts, and through a narrative that Roma are a lost tribe of Israel, the Church constructs Roma as a moral collectivity and subverts their position of inferiority and 'exceptionality'. The Church provides a way for Roma to be respectable, to live with dignity and to have what they understand to be a 'normal' life, whilst retaining their Roma identity.

Closed quasigeodesics. A closed quasigeodesic on the surface of a polyhedron is a loop which can everywhere locally be unfolded to a straight line: thus, it's straight on faces, uniquely determined on edges, and has as much flexibility at a vertex as that vertex's curvature. On any polyhedron, at least three closed quasigeodesics are known to exist, by a nonconstructive topological proof. We present an algorithm to find one on any convex polyhedron in time O(n2[epsilon]-2- 2Ll-1 ), where [epsilon] e is the minimum curvature of a vertex, l is the length of the longest side, and t is the smallest distance within a face between a vertex and an edge not containing it. Escaping from polygons. You move continuously at speed 1 in the interior of a polygon P, trying to reach the boundary. A zombie moves continuously at speed r outside P, trying to be at the boundary when you reach it. For what r can you escape and for what r can the zombie catch you? We give exact results for some P. For general P, we give a simple approximation to within a factor of roughly 9.2504. We also give a pseudopolynomial-time approximation scheme. Finally, we prove NP-hardness and hardness of approximation results for related problems with multiple zombies and/or humans. Conflict-free graph coloring. A conflict-free k-coloring of a graph assigns one of k different colors to some of the vertices such that, for every vertex v, there is a color that is assigned to exactly one vertex among v and v's neighbors. We study the natural problem of the conflict-free chromatic number XCF(G) (the smallest k for which conflict-free k-colorings exist), with a focus on planar graphs.
