Abstract:

Abstract The aim of this paper is to clarify some important features of a specific text genre called essay. There are discussed some strategies according to which we might successfully write and read the essays, instead of analysing a general concept of essay and traditional searching for the necessary and sufficient features. In this contribution the term of essay is divided into two categories named „academic essay” and „classic essay”. T he main part of this paper focuses on the classic essay that is explained by the triangle whose vertices are represented by „factuality”, „authenticity” and „literariness”. It is demonstrated that in this case we might criticise weakened coherence of the text, but just with the regard to the classic essay as a compromise between truth and elegance.

The author supports the claim that attempts to formulate a universal definition of the term “populism” are not worthwhile, because the sense of the term is usually determined by a specific social context. Understanding the utopian nature of populism provides a better understanding of the utopian nature of democracy and allows for a humble departure from dreams of a perfect social order, because, as has been shown in numerous survey studies, the contemporary shift of social mood, attitudes, and opinions toward some version of populism is a relatively simple consequence of the deficiencies of democracy in its neoliberal version.

Abstract:

Edwardsiella tardais an important Gram-negative pathogen that employs a type III secretion system (T3SS) to deliver effectors into host cells to facilitate bacterial survival and replication. These effectors are translocated into host cells through a translocon complex composed of three secreted proteins, namely, EseB, EseC, and EseD. The secretion of EseB and EseD requires a chaperone protein called EscC, whereas the secretion of EseC requires the chaperone EscA. In this study, we identified a novel protein (EseE) that also regulates the secretion of EseC. AneseEdeletion mutant secreted much less EseC into supernatants, accompanied by increased EseC levels within bacterial cells. We also demonstrated that EseE interacted directly with EseC in a pulldown assay. Interestingly, EseC, EseE, and EscA were able to form a ternary complex, as revealed by pulldown and gel filtration assays. Of particular importance, the deletion ofeseEresulted in decreased levels of EseB and EseD proteins in both the bacterial pellet and supernatant fraction. Furthermore, real-time PCR assays showed that EseE positively regulated the transcription of the translocon operonescC-eseE, comprisingescC,eseB,escA,eseC,eseD, andeseE. These effects of EseE on the translocon components/operon appeared to have a functional consequence, since the ΔeseEstrain was outcompeted by wild-typeE. tardain a mixed infection in blue gourami fish. Collectively, our results demonstrate that EseE not only functions as a chaperone for EseC but also acts as a positive regulator controlling the expression of the translocon operonescC-eseE, thus contributing to the pathogenesis ofE. tardain fish.

Abstract:

This is a metaphysical essay devoted to the phenomenon of parting. The author analyses two events that happened to the Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva on 31August 1941: parting with her life and parting with her son. A thorough analysis of the poet’s goodbye letter to her son, and in particular the handwritten underlining that is absent from reprints, sheds new light on why the great poet committed suicide. The main subject of discussion, however, remains the phenomenon of separation. The article is dedicated to the memory of Professor Cezary Wodziński, the supervisor of my doctoral dissertation, my teacher and friend. The methodology takes a phenomenological approach and linguistic analysis.

Abstract:

This essay was envisaged as a dialogue with Paweł Ciołkiewicz, author of the book Moje komiksy, Vol. 1, Od Tajfuna do Supermana [My Comics, Vol. 1, From Typhoon to Superman] (2019), who has for years been fascinated by the phenomenon of comics and made them the subject of scholarly reflection. When analyzing the history and contemporaneity of the comic book, he uses concepts from many fields familiar to sociologists, such as cultural anthropology, philosophy, history, psychology, and religious studies. In discussion with Ciołkiewicz, the author of the article addresses the following topics: (1) comics in the grid of academic concepts; (2) comics as an illustration of the fate of popular culture in the Polish People’s Republic and the USA; and (3) the comic book as myth. In summary, he recalls Ciołkiewicz’s statement that for him comics are not only an object to be studied but also an instrument for breaking through the veil of obviousness.

Rad je prikaz priprave i izvođenja nastavne jedinice Ispravak školske zadaće u okviru nastavnog predmeta hrvatski jezik u nastavnom programu gimnazija. Nastavna tema nalazi se u predmetnom području jezično izražavanje. Priprava i izvedba nastavne jedinice sadrži sljedeće elemente – nastavna tema, nastavna jedinica, broj sati, ključni pojmovi; obrazovna postignuća; tip, ciljevi i zadaće (obrazovne, odgojne, funkcionalne, komunikacijske) nastavnog sata; metodički sustav; nastavna sredstva, pomagala, oblici, postupci i metode;unutarpredmetna i međupredmetna korelacija te struktura i trajanje pojedinog dijela nastavnog sata. Prikaz izvedbenog dijela nastavne jedinice sadrži pjesmu nekadašnjeg učenika gimnazije o školskoj zadaći, elemente po kojima je trebalo napisati esej, esej jednog učenika i analizu eseja, jezične i stilske pogreške iz školskih zadaća (školskih eseja) cjelokupnog razrednog odjela s rješenjima, značajke uspješno napisanog eseja i zadatak za domaću zadaću. Nastavni sat, osmišljen različitim oblicima i metodama, potaknuo je zainteresiranost učenika na aktivan rad. Jezična naobrazba učenika (poznavanje pravopisne norme i gramatike) bila je povezana s pisanim izražavanjem – oblikovanjem eseja kao tekstovne vrste.

Abstract:

The aim of the following text is to present various manners of thinking about adults by five-year olds. On the basis of group interviews the author tries to recognize how children perceive adults. Despite the fact that this research ought to be treated only as a case study, the outcome shown in the essay depicts the children’s world. What is more it also shows how we, the adults, rear children. It was demonstrated that children view us as individuals physically resembling themselves, extremely busy at work, privileged when it comes to doing things that children cannot, great role models and good guardians. They do realize that in the adult world there are people who can do harm to them. To us it may seem that all these revelations are nothing new, but the results can show that we fail to treat children as partners.

Abstract:

The paper explores the role of the essay-test in acquiring reading and reading comprehension skills in the modern-day teaching of Serbian Language and Literature. The authors emphasize the importance of using essay-tests for obtaining the feedback on the reading comprehension level of the texts covered in regular classes, at final exams, and on the criteria-oriented knowledge tests. Two key domains are taken into consideration when designing the tasks: the narrative text, emhasizing its structure, narrative perspective, and the motivation of the characters in the function of artistic articulation; the cognitive approach to reading according to the constructive-integrative model of Walter Kintsch (Kintsch, 1988), relevant for presenting the reading construct and understanding the cognitive complexity of the tasks. The purpose of testing students using essay-tests derives from the need to assess the development of reading literacy among the students of the higher grades of elemen-tary school.

Abstract:

A remarkable book by Nina Witoszek, an outstanding compatriot of ours, originally published in the USA, where it has aroused well-deserved interest among both professional and avid readers, forms the background for this essay. Populist nationalist tendencies growing within existing, but also well-established democracies, having authoritarian thinking at their core, constitute a threat not only to individual freedom but also to the effective functioning of societies. The strengthening of democracies, i.e. systems that are fundamentally democratic but significantly imbued with authoritarian elements, is a serious challenge for contemporary states (Hungary, Belarus, Poland, the USA under Donald Trump, Taiwan, Turkey, Liberia, Hong Kong and others). Overcoming these authoritarian tendencies is seen in Witoszek’s book as an initiative taken by small social groups releasing social energy to build grassroots democracy known from history as constructive and effective initiatives, e.g. KOR and later “Solidarity” in Poland. The book is an apotheosis of the friendship of groups of so-called ‘humanist renegades’ who evoke the impulse of change and their energy and way of thinking are instilled in the broad masses of society thus delivering the anti-authoritarian message of sustainable modernity.

In this study, by comparing the profile of secreted proteins of the wild-type PPD130/91 and its T3SS ATPase ΔesaNmutant, we identified a new effector by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. This effector consists of 1,359 amino acids, sharing high sequence similarity with Orf29/30 ofE. tardastrain EIB202, and is renamed EseJ. The secretion and translocation of EseJ depend on the T3SS. A ΔeseJmutant strain adheres to epithelioma papillosum of carp (EPC) cells 3 to 5 times more extensively than the wild-type strain does. EseJ inhibits bacterial adhesion to EPC cells from within bacterial cells. Importantly, the ΔeseJmutant strain does not replicate efficiently in EPC cells and fails to replicate in J774A.1 macrophages. In infected J774A.1 macrophages, the ΔeseJmutant elicits higher production of reactive oxygen species than wild-typeE. tarda. The replication defect is consistent with the attenuation of the ΔeseJmutant in the blue gourami fish model: the 50% lethal dose (LD50) of the ΔeseJmutant is 2.34 times greater than that of the wild type, and the ΔeseJmutant is less competitive than the wild type in mixed infection. Thus, EseJ represents a novel effector that contributes to virulence by reducing bacterial adhesion to EPC cells and facilitating intracellular bacterial replication.

Abstract:

U okviru savremene književnosti često nailazimo na djela koja nije moguće obuhvatiti jednom književnom formom ili žanrom. U takva djela spada i djelo latinoameričke spisateljice Glorije Ansaldue Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestizakoje se žanrovski može definisati kao roman-esej, jer istovremeno sadrži elemente romana i esejističkog izraza. Uz to, ovo djelo predstavlja i mješavinu poezije, autobiografskog pisanja, istoriografije i magičnog realizma. Međutim, u ovom istraživanju se primarno razmatra upotreba eseja kao oblika ili forme, s ciljem da se pokaže da je Ansaldua pažljivo birala esejistički izraz u nastojanju da što adekvatnije oslika stvarnost latinoameričke populacije, posebno žena, s obje strane američko-meksičke granice. Istraživanjem se zaključuje da, kada je u pitanju pomenuto djelo, esej predstavlja najprirodniji književni i formalni ekvivalent onoj stvarnosti o kojoj Ansaldua piše i da ga ona s namjerom koristi kada govori o svojim ličnim stavovima vezanim za pitanja kao što su istorija, kultura, tradicija, rodne uloge i identitet latinoameričkih etničkih grupa.

Essay on the right to decide about some aspects of personal lifeThe essay is a reference to the statement of Professor T. Kaczmarek about the human right to a good death in Polish law. The starting point is recalling the provisions constituting the normative autonomy for refusing life-saving medical interventions, refusing abortion needed to save the lives or health of pregnant women and consent to organ donation ex vivo. These normative regulations are confronted with the criminalisation of the murder at the request of the victim and under the influence of sympathy for her and assisted suicide, as well as provisions permitting the forced treatment. The common ground is the principle of proportionality, as well as the provisions of the Constitution defining the protection of life and health, and the right to self-determination about personal life.

Poniższy artykuł poświęcony jest literackiemu reportażowi biograficznemu Papusza i obrazowi romskiej poetki, który tworzy jego autorka. Angelika Kuźniak bada losy Papuszy poza mitem utrwalonym w kulturze popularnej, a poszukując Papuszy z krwi i kości, trafia na postać absolutnie tragiczną. Co oczywiste, autorka prezentuje niezwykle krytyczne spojrzenie feministyczne, które wychwytuje grzechy, za które poetka będzie musiała zapłacić, a na ogół są one związane z faktem bycia kobietą. Ale tu nie ma publicystyki, autorka sprawia, że fakty mówią za siebie. Fabuła jest tak skonstruowana, że komentarz moralny jest zbędny. Jest to książka sucha, minimalistyczna, zbudowana na czystych dokumentach i skrawkach życia, pozornie bez obróbki literackiej: jej stylizacja wyraża się w językowej zgrzebności, jakby naśladującej twarde życie Papuszy (życie, w którym szuka się poezji), jej prymitywne pismo, a nawet jej ubogą i naiwną poezję. Jak zobaczymy, w losie Papuszy spotykają się trzy wielkie anatemy: kobiecość, cygańskość i inność. Ale Kuźniak wykracza poza konkretną relację biograficzną, która z kolei służy jako wektor mikrohistoryczny, dzięki któremu uzyskujemy dostęp do wizji historii polskich Romów w XX wieku. W ten sposób Papusza staje się esejem krytycznym dotyczącym dyskryminacji, płci i inności. Papusza’s Condemnation According to Angelika Kuźniak or the Biographic Reportage as an Essay The following article deals with the literary biographical reportage Papusza and the author’s impression of the Gypsy poetess. Kuźniak explores Papusza’s life beyond the myth rooted in popular culture. And in her search for the real Papusza she finds an absolutely tragic figure. Naturally, the author applies a highly critical feminist gaze that detects the “sins” for which the poetess will have to “pay”, and in general these are related to the fact that she is a woman. But there is no discourse here: the author makes the facts speak for themselves. The plot is constructed in such a way that the moral commentary is redundant. Kuźniak’s work is a dry, minimalist book, built upon bare factsand scraps of life, with no apparent literary work: its stylisation is expressed through linguistic coarseness, imitating Papusza’s austere way of life (a life where the poetry is sought after), her primitive writing and even her naive poetry. As we shall see, three great condemnations loom over Papusza’s life: femininity, gypsyness and otherness. But Kuźniak goes beyond the specific biographical account, which in turn serves as a micro-historical vector through which we gain access to a vision of the history of Polish Gypsies in the twentieth century. Thanks to that Papusza thus becomes a critical essay dealing with the issues of discrimination, gender and otherness.

Esej jest impresją krążącą wokół problematyki buntu i anarchii obecnej w dziele Witolda Gombrowicza od debiutu po ostatnie utwory. Problematyka związana jest z centralnymi w tej twórczości opozycjami dojrzałość – niedojrzałość i wyższość – niższość. W wywodzie autor nie pretenduje do rozstrzygania i stawiania arbitralnych tez, przyjmuje raczej pozycję związaną z gatunkiem eseju literackiego – wątpliwości i próby. To pozwala także na podjęcie próby odczytywania fragmentów utworów autora Ferdydurke przez pryzmat współczesności i hipotezę, iż „nauki” Gombrowicza nie zostaływ Polsce społecznie przepracowane, co zawdzięczać należy także politycznym i ideologicznym manipulacjom.
