Full textSeismicity in Peru and the Andean orogeny possess a common origin, the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate. This convergence has velocities of 8 cm/yr., giving form to the current topography characterized by the presence of the Andes Cordillera. During interseismic phases the seismicity has a complex spatial distribution, with seismic activity correlating with topography, where the subducting plate (slab) presents seismicity of inverse fault type in the forearc zone, normal seismicity in the backarc zone, diminishing this seismicity between the two zones, specifically in the high Andes (2000m). The lithospheric weight of high topography modifies the state of tectonic stresses, generating an increment in the vertical lithospheric stress, which produces the compensation of tectonic stress generated by subduction, thus producing a decrease in the seismicity.
