Full textBackground: Swedish investors have an increased interest in sustainable investments, thus the demand for measuring companies’ sustainability work, based on ESG criteria, has increased. Research on who, based on demographic and socioeconomic aspects, that choose to invest in ESG shares is limited. Previous research has mainly studied sustainable fund savings through surveys. Purpose: The thesis aims to analyze whether differences in ESG mean in the stock portfolios of Swedish SR-investors can be explained by demographic and socioeconomic differences. Furthermore, the thesis aims to identify what demographic group has the highest preference for each sub group of ESG. Completion: Through a unique data set, we perform multivariate regressions, which enables a comparison of ESG means in stock portfolios of different demographic groups. Through research questions, we discuss and compare the results with previous research. Conclusion: The study finds that the Swedish SR-investor with the highest ESG mean in the stock portfolio is most likely an older woman, with low income and living in a larger city. Furthermore, the study finds that middle aged and older women, with low income and living in and outside a larger city, have the highest preference for each sub group of ESG. In addition, the study finds both similarities and differences between these results and previous research.

Full textEcologic sustainability has become increasingly important in the public debate, as well as among companies and investors in the recent years. This causes the investments companies to further improve their product development processes to meet the requirements concerning sustainability. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the knowledge on how investment companies work with ecological sustainability in their product development process. The thesis examines four research questions, all of them linked to the investment companies' work concerning ecological sustainability. Initially, a literature study was conducted to provide the writers with knowledge and understanding of inclusion of ecological sustainability in the financial market. Five representatives representing four different investments companies in Stockholm were interviewed with focus on the integration of ecological sustainability in their product development processes. It has transpired that there was a big difference regarding how different investment companies worked with integration of ecological sustainability in working methods likewise in the scope. In conclusion, most investors somehow work with sustainability. The incentives for working with ecological sustainability varies. First, due to the increased demand from customers on ecologically sustainable products in more recent years. Secondly, many investments companies believe this will give a higher return. Although, the green market is still not big enough to give the investment companies the possibility to invest only in ecological sustainable companies. Also, reduced diversification can lead to an increased risk. Furthermore, there is still a shortage of guidelines concerning how an investment company can ensure whether an investment is sustainable or not. The new taxonomy aims to clarify this, although, it still has a need of further development in order to give a more nuanced picture of what actually is a sustainable investment.

Full textAim: ESG ratings can be used by investors who want to invest their capital in a sustainable way. However, the reliability of the ratings has been questioned by previous researchers. Previous studies have shown that the effect of a controversy on the ESG rating can vary depending on which aspect of the rating is studied. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a connection between environmental controversies and the environmental dimension of the ESG rating. Method: The study is quantitative and has a hypothetical-deductive approach. Two hypotheses have been formulated in the study and tested through regression analyzes in the statistical program SPSS Statistics. Secondary data has been collected from the Thomson Reuters database Refinitiv Eikon. The population has consisted of 64,800 public companies, from which a sample of 1752 companies has been made. Result & Conclusions: The results of the study show a positive correlation between environmental controversies and the environmental dimension, even though the definition of environmental controversies is negative. This means that the companies' environmental dimension of the ESG rating is positively affected by an environmental controversy. CSR report was the only variable of sustainability work that is positively affected after an environmental controversy. The study concludes that the company's ESG rating in the environmental dimension increases after involvement in an environmental controversy and that companies to some extent improve their sustainability work, in the form of sustainability reports, after an environmental controversy. Contribution of the thesis: The results of the study provide increased knowledge about how environmental controversies affect the environmental dimension of the ESG rating. For investors, this can be helpful when planning new investments because it provides an increased understanding of the effects of an environmental controversy that can be seen in the environmental dimension of the ESG rating. Suggestions for future research: Following the study's conclusions, several suggestions for further research arise. Since different credit rating agencies can give the same company different ESG ratings, the same study could be repeated with ESG ratings from other credit rating agencies. Another aspect that can be investigated is whether companies with higher ESG ratings are involved in fewer controversies than companies with lower ratings.

Full textBackground: SRI has grown in importance for investors, apart from risk and return. Universities do as moral leaders of society have a responsibility to reach an elevated level of sustainability. Donors, beneficiaries, students, organizations of interest and opinion formers differ in their demands and objectives for asset management in university foundations. This fuel a conflict of objectives that has no immediate solution. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to, from an investing perspective, map and analyse Swedish university foundations’ view upon and management of conflicts of objectives between return, risk management and internal as well as external demands for sustainable and responsible investments. A partial purpose is to give perspective and develop suggestions for guidelines for how a sustainable foundation management can be accomplished in relation to objectives for risk and return given restrictions for what is allowed investments from a sustainable perspective. Completion: We have conducted ten qualitative interviews with foundationand asset managers. The framework used to analyse our data have been built up from evidence based asset management summarized by William F. Sharpe. This has been extended with proven knowledge and legislation. Conclusion: The foundation managers do not fully interpret the conflict of objectives as a large problem and claim they have solved it. They believe sustainability and satisfying returns can be combined. We have although found a lack of risk awareness. We conclude that by having a continuous approach, prioritize the objectives and define sustainability a better solution can be reached.

Full textSocially responsible investments have experienced a substantial increase in popularity in recent years in both the academic and the financial world. A fund company has, in its position as an investor, both the possibility and incentives to transform a company from the inside. They can influence the company to choose a sustainable or a non-sustainable direction. There is a lack of an outside perspective that analyzes the strategies that fund companies apply to influence as investors, and what incentives they have to work with sustainable investing, which is what this study seeks to explore. This thesis takes its theoretical foundation from research in social responsibility, the effect of social norms on institutions and management of funds. The study is qualitative and the empirical data was collected from semi-structured interviews with representatives from ten Swedish fund companies. Interviews were considered to be an adequate approach to deeply explore how fund companies utilize their influence as investors. In this thesis, we conclude that institutions are subjected to social norms and value that their capital is invested in a way that is socially responsible. Institutions are the fund companies’ primary target group and their demand for socially responsible investment is the primary driver for the fund companies’ work with sustainability. This study shows that the exclusion of unethical companies from the fund managers portfolio, together with an active dialogue with the companies are the most widely used strategies. The least common is the inclusive strategy. The study finally concludes that the fund companies’ work with socially responsible investing is a strategic choice in order to attract investors.

Full textArea description: With time, sustainable funds have become a more popular investment alternative for fund savers. Together with a higher sustainable awareness among consumers, companies have had to adapt their strategies to reach up to the sustainable expectations from the society. The higher demand on sustainable alternatives, have contributed to that the number of sustainable funds have increased with time. The fund companies implementation of more sustainable alternatives, results in a positive marketing for those companies and thereby even a larger profitability. In the same time as the sustainability aspect has become a more popular focus area for the fund companies, the popularity have contributed to more strict regulations. These regulations include that the fund companies have a duty of disclosure towards the investors, who will get the possibility to examine if the fund companies actions, reach up to the investors preferences or not. Young adults have in previous studies, showed to have high sustainable awareness. With that in mind, it seems interesting to study how young adults preferences are and how these affect their attitude to invest in sustainable funds. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to study how students of economics, value sustainable funds today and if they see it likely that they will invest in sustainable funds in the future. The students preferences about sustainable funds, can give an indication on how fund companies can create legitimacy concerning investments in sustainable funds, towards the population in this research. Method: A quantitative research method have been used to study the students of economics, attitudes about investments in sustainable funds. The empirical material have been collected with an online survey, which was sent to the entire population in this study. Hypotheses have been made about how students preferences about sustainability and funds, affects their attitudes on investing in sustainable funds. Result: The results of this study highlights that the students preferences about sustainability and funds, have a positive effect on how their attitudes are about investments in sustainable funds. The result from this study confirms from previous research, that many private investors request funds which fulfill their ethical values. The study shows that young adults, even if they are in the beginning of their life savings, seek after sustainable alternatives. For example, most students consider that they are willing to get a lower return on their savings, if their investments corresponds with their ethical values. Regarding the fund companies, this study shows that sustainable strategies benefits their legitimacy seeking. At the same time, the results from this study shows that if the investments from the sustainable funds are not sustainable, a legitimacy gap can arise towards the population of this study.Limitations: This research is limited to study the preferences of economics students at Högskolan i Borås, which belong to the group of young adults. The limitation was made because a study with all young adults included, would have become to comprehensive. The same thought was behind the decision to only include economics students on one university, instead of including all universities in Sweden. The reason that economics students was choicen to the population, was mainly because these students seems to have more interests in the subject matter of this research.

Full textThis thesis has explored how the announcement of an inclusion or exclusion from the Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America (DJSI NA) affect stock price. This was done to further investigate the relation between sustainability performance and corporate financial performance. DJSI NA has been used as a benchmark on companies’ sustainability performance. An event study methodology has been conducted to examine the occurrence of abnormal returns due to the annual announcement of DJSI members, during the years 2017- 2019. The findings reveal several significant results where it is possible to reject the null hypothesis that inclusion or exclusion from DJSI NA does not affect stock price. The results also give a substantial insight on the development of abnormal returns from 2017-2019. A strong significant result for 2019, could possibly show that DJSI NA enhances companies’ sustainable identity and is therefore of interest to asset managers.

Full textDegree Project, The Business Administration and Economics Programme, School of Business and Economics at Linnaeus University Authors: Gustav Johannesson and Martin Westport Supervisor: Andreas Stephan Co-assessor: Anna Stafsudd Title: The relationship between Corporate Social Performance and Financial Risk - A quantitative study that examines Nordic companies Background: Corporate Social Responsibility has been on the corporate agenda in recent years following increased global challenges and greater pressure from stakeholders. One can see more risks associated with corporate sustainability. This has led to a great interest globally and an upward trend in Socially Responsible Investing where the Nordic region is at the leading edge. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to explain the relationship between Corporate Social Performance, both at a combined and an individual level, and financial risk. Method: Through the deductive research approach and the quantitative research strategy that is based on panel data, the authors test their hypotheses. The authors base their hypotheses on stakeholder theory and risk management theory and test them with a Nordic sample of 144 companies over the period 2002-2016. Conclusion: The study results show that there is a negative relationship between Corporate Social Performance and financial risk. There is also a negative relationship between social performance and financial risk. This is in line with the authors’ expectations. However, the results show no relationship between companies’ environmental and governance performance and their financial risk.

Full textTitle: Investors risk exposure for sustainable investments – A study of asymmetrical risk and how it is affected by positive screening and dynamic SRI Level: Bachelor thesis in Business Administration Author: Kim Jonsson & Jacob Larsson Supervisor: Peter Lindberg Date: May, 2018 Aim: “Investigate whether a portfolios negative asymmetric risk, from an investors perspective, is influenced by positive screening based on dynamic SRI, based on ESG-factors”. Method: Construction of a hypothetical portfolio consisting of stocks, based on dynamic SRI and positive screening. Financial backtracking measures how the portfolio performed regarding asymmetric beta values, provided it was implemented during a historical period of time. The portfolio is reallocated according to predefined criteria in the beginning of each year during the historical period. Results: The constructed portfolio consistently demonstrates lower beta values than the market, both traditionally and asymmetrically. The asymmetric beta value, is for the period of time including the 2008 financial crisis, higher than traditional beta value at outcomes below the mean value, then decreases in negative outcomes. As the study is adjusted for the financial crisis, the result changes to show gradually decreasing beta values for outcomes below average and further negative outcomes. Conclusions: The study results indicate that selection criteria based on ESG factors and positive selection screening, under certain conditions, affect the asymmetric risk exposure of the portfolio. This conclusion also indicates that companies through active sustainability awareness have the opportunity to reduce their cost of capital, as investors' required rate of return declines. Contribution of the thesis: Practical insight regarding asymmetric risk analysis, and the fact that a portfolio composed of a limited amount of assets potentially demonstrates lower systematic risk exposure than the market. Furthermore, selection methods and selection criteria can affect asymmetric risk exposure. Suggestion for future research: If any of the sustainability factors are of greater significance regarding the asymmetric risk exposure. Further research within AMH and its paradigms is also necessary as random walk is questioned. Key words: Asymmetric risk, sustainability, ESG, beta value, dynamic SRI, positive screening, selection criteria, portfolio allocation and RobecoSAM
