Full textChoose an algebraic group G, and an algebraic subgroup H. Choose a Borel probability measure μ on G. Consider the Markov chain on the G-space X = G/H with transition probability Px = μ * δx for x ε X.The point of this dissertation is the study of the recurrence properties of such a random walk.We consider two types of recurrence : almost-certain recurrence (i.e. almost-every trajectory enters some compact set infinitely often) and the associated almost-certain transience (where almost-every trajectory eventually leaves every compact set) and recurrence in law (i.e. there exists a μ stationary probability measure on X).First, we show that, in general, there is no dichotomy between almost-certain recurrence and transience by constructing an example with both almost-certainly recurrent and almost-certainly transient points. We then prove a criterion for almost-certain recurrence when G is a semi-simple Lie group and X is a G-space. In fact, in this case, we have a dichotomy where either every point of X is almost-certainly recurrent, or every point of X is almost certainly transient. When G is the affine group GL(d,ℝ) α ℝd, we give a criterion for recurrence in law on the affine Grassmannians. In the final chapter, we give some partial results from an ongoing project, which give a criterion for recurrence in law the group SO(p,p+1)α ℝ2p+1

Full textIn this work, we study closed locally homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifolds through the notion of (G,X)-structure, introduced by Thurston in his geometrization program. We start by presenting the general problem. In particular, we discuss the link between geodesical completeness of those manifolds and another notion of completeness specific to (G,X)-structures. In chapter 1, we also give a new proof of a theorem by Bromberg and Medina which classifies left invariant Lorentz metrics on SL(2,R) that are geodesically complete. Conjecturally, every pseudo-riemannian (G,X)-structure on a closed manifold is complete. Here we prove that it holds for certain geometries, provided that the (G,X )-structure is a priori Kleinian . This implies that, for such geometries, completeness is a closed condition. When X is a Lie group of rank 1 handled with its Killing metric, this result complements a theorem of Guéritaud–Guichard–Kassel–Wienhard, acording to which completeness is an open condition. We then turn to the study of representations of surface groups into the isometry group of a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold M of curvature less than or equal to -1. Given such a representation ρ, we prove that the set of Fuchsian representations j for which there exists a (j,ρ)-equivariant contracting map from H2 to M is a non-empty open contractible subset of the Teichmüller space (unless ρ itself is Fuchsian). This result allows us to describe the space of Lorentz metrics of constant curvature -1 on a circle bundle over a closed surface. We show that this space has finitely many connected components, classified by an invariant that we call the length of the fiber. We also prove that the total volume of those metrics only depends on the topology of the bundle and on the length of the fiber

Full textThis thesis presents two results concerning homogeneous spaces of algebraic groups. In the first part, we consider the following question, recently asked by Burt Totaro:Let k be a field, G a linear algebraic k-group, and X a quasi-projective variety, endowed with the structure of a homogeneous space of G. Assume there exists a zero-cycle of degree d>0 on X; that is to say, there exists a family of closed points of X, having the property that the gcd of thedegrees (over k) of their residue fields divides d. Can we say that X has a rational point in a separable field extension of k, of degree dividing d ?We show that, in general, the answer is negative. In particular, we produce a counter-example X when k is a number field. The space X is geometrically rational, and a smooth k-compactification of X cannot have a k-rational point. This suggests to considerthe following general question: let X be a homogeneous space of an algebraic group (over a field k), such that X admits a k-compactification having a k-rational point. Then, does X itself possess a rational point ? In the second part of this thesis, we show the answer is positive,in full generality. Roughly speaking, we use cohomological tools to reduce the problem to the case of torsors under semi-simple groups, which is settled by the theory of Bruhat and Tits

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to construct new interesting complex algebraic Fano varieties and varieties with trivial canonical bundle and to analyze their geometry. In the first part we construct special varieties as zero loci of homogeneous bundles inside generalized Grassmannians. We give a complete classification for varieties of small dimension when the bundle is completely reducible. Thus, we prove that the only fourfolds with trivial canonical bundle so constructed which are hyper-Kahler are the examples of Beauville-Donagi and Debarre-Voisin. The same holds in ordinary Grassmannians when the bundle is irreducible in any dimension. In the second part we use orbital degeneracy loci (ODL), which are a generalization of classical degeneracy loci, to construct new varieties. ODL are constructed from a model, which is usually an orbit closure inside a representation. We recall the fundamental properties of ODL. As an illustration of the construction, we construct three Hilbert schemes of two points on a K3 surface as ODL, and many examples of Calabi-Yau and Fano threefolds and fourfolds. Then we study orbit closures inside quiver representations, and we provide crepant Kempf collapsings for those of type A_n, D_4; this allows us to construct some special varieties as ODL.Finally we focus on a particular class of Fano varieties, namely bisymplectic Grassmannians. These varieties admit the action of a torus with a finite number of fixed points. We find the dimension of their moduli space. We then study the equivariant cohomology of symplectic Grassmannians, which turns out to help understanding better that of bisymplectic ones. We analyze in detail the case of dimension 6

Full textIn 1963, Belinsky, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz have proposed a conjectural description of the asymptotic geometry of cosmological models in the vicinity of their initial singularity. In particular, it is believed that the asymptotic geometry of generic spatially homogeneous spacetimes should display an oscillatory chaotic behaviour modeled on a discrete map’s dynamics (the so-called Kasner map). We prove that this conjecture holds true, if not for generic spacetimes, at least for a positive Lebesgue measure set of spacetimes. In the context of spatially homogeneous spacetimes, the Einstein field equations can be reduced to a system of differential equations on a finite dimensional phase space: the Wainwright-Hsu equations. The dynamics of these equations encodes the evolution of the geometry of spacelike slices in spatially homogeneous spacetimes. Our proof is based on the non-uniform hyperbolicity of the Wainwright-Hsu equations. Indeed, we consider the return map of the solutions of these equations on a transverse section and prove that it is a non-uniformly hyperbolic map with singularities. This allows us to construct some local stable manifolds à la Pesin for this map and to prove that the union of the orbits starting in these local stable manifolds cover a positive Lebesgue measure set in the phase space. The chaotic oscillatory behaviour of the corresponding spacetimes follows. The Wainwright-Hsu equations turn out to be quite interesting and challenging from a purely dynamical system viewpoint. In order to understand the asymptotic behaviour of (many of) the solutions of these equations, we will in particular be led to: • carry a detailed analysis of the local dynamics of a vector field in the neighborhood of degenerate nonlinearizable partially hyperbolic singularities, • deal with non-uniformly hyperbolic maps with singularities for which the usual theory (due to Pesin and Katok-Strelcyn) is not relevant due to the poor regularity of the maps, • consider some unusual arithmetic conditions expressed in terms of continued fractions and use some rather sophisticated ergodic properties of the Gauss map to prove that these properties are generic

Full textLet f be a germ of holomorphic function in two variables which vanishes at the origin. The zero set of this function defines a germ of analytic curve. Although the topological classification of such a germ is well known since the work of Zariski, the analytical classification is still widely open. In 2012, Hefez and Hernandes solved the irreducible case and announced the two components case. In 2015, Genzmer and Paul solved the case of topologically quasi-homogeneous functions. The main purpose of this thesis is to study the first topological class of non quasi-homogeneous functions. In chapter 2, we describe the local moduli space of the foliations in this class and give a universal family of analytic normal forms. In the same chapter, we prove the global uniqueness of these normal forms. In chapter 3, we study the moduli space of curves which is the moduli space of foliations up to the analytic equivalence of the associated separatrices. In particular, we present an algorithm to compute its generic dimension. Chapter 4 presents another universal family of analytic normal forms which is globally unique as well. Indeed, there is no canonical model for the distribution of the set of parameters on the branches. So, with this family, we can see that the previous family is not the only one and that it is possible to construct normal forms by considering another distribution of the parameters. Finally, concerning the globalization, we discuss in chapter 5 a strategy based on geometric invariant theory and explain why it does not work so far

Full textIn the Information Retrieval field, documents are usually considered as a "bagof-words". This model does not take into account the temporal structure of thedocument and is sensitive to noises which can alter its lexical form. These noisescan be produced by different sources : uncontrolled form of documents in microbloggingplatforms, automatic transcription of speech documents which are errorprone, lexical and grammatical variabilities in Web forums. . . The work presented inthis thesis addresses issues related to document representations from noisy sources. The thesis consists of three parts in which different representations of content areavailable. The first one compares a classical representation based on a term-frequencyrepresentation to a higher level representation based on a topic space. The abstractionof the document content allows us to limit the alteration of the noisy document byrepresenting its content with a set of high-level features. Our experiments confirm thatmapping a noisy document into a topic space allows us to improve the results obtainedduring different information retrieval tasks compared to a classical approach based onterm frequency. The major problem with such a high-level representation is that it isbased on a space theme whose parameters are chosen empirically. The second part presents a novel representation based on multiple topic spaces thatallow us to solve three main problems : the closeness of the subjects discussed in thedocument, the tricky choice of the "right" values of the topic space parameters and therobustness of the topic-based representation. Based on the idea that a single representationof the contents cannot capture all the relevant information, we propose to increasethe number of views on a single document. This multiplication of views generates "artificial"observations that contain fragments of useful information. The first experimentvalidated the multi-view approach to represent noisy texts. However, it has the disadvantageof being very large and redundant and of containing additional variability associatedwith the diversity of views. In the second step, we propose a method based onfactor analysis to compact the different views and to obtain a new robust representationof low dimension which contains only the informative part of the document whilethe noisy variabilities are compensated. During a dialogue classification task, the compressionprocess confirmed that this compact representation allows us to improve therobustness of noisy document representation.Nonetheless, during the learning process of topic spaces, the document is consideredas a "bag-of-words" while many studies have showed that the word position in a7document is useful. A representation which takes into account the temporal structureof the document based on hyper-complex numbers is proposed in the third part. Thisrepresentation is based on the hyper-complex numbers of dimension four named quaternions. Our experiments on a classification task have showed the effectiveness of theproposed approach compared to a conventional "bag-of-words" representation

Full textIn this thesis we study different variations of sampling inequalities. First, mirroring a result in [56], we give the conditions for sampling-like inequalities for Besov functions on compact Riemannian manifolds and spaces of homogeneous type. The techniques used to prove these results are based on the decomposition of smooth functions into wavelets available in both of these settings. Further, as in the euclidean case, this characterization through a wavelet expansion allows us to deepen the study of Besov spaces, obtaining a trace theorem and results about their local regularity (inspired in the strategies developed in [21, 54]). Finally we shift to work within the classic setting of sampling theory but changing the way samples are taken: instead of taking a discrete set of points we consider certain type of curves. In particular we determine the Nyquist rate for spirals when sampling bandlimited functions. We then show that, below this rate, the amount of undersampling that compressible signals admit when sampled along spirals is limited

Full textThis thesis studies the unramified Brauer group of homogeneous spaces with non connected stabilizer and its arithmetic applcations. In particular, we develop different formulas of algebraic and/or arithmetic nature allowing an explicit calculation, both over a finite field and over a field of characteristic 0, of the algebraic part of the unramified Brauer group of a homogeneous space G\G' under a semisimple simply connected linear group G' with finite stabilizer G. We also give examples of the calculations that can be done with these formulas. For achieving this goal, we prove beforehand (using a theorem of Gabber on alterations) a result describing the prime-to-p torsion part of the unramified Brauer group of a smooth and geometrically integral variety V over a global field of characteristic p or over a finite field by evaluating the elements of Br(V) at its local points. The formulas for finite stabilizers are later generalised to the case where the stabilizer G is any linear algebraic group using a reduction of the Galois cohomology of the group G to that of a certain finite subquotient. Finally, for a global field K and a finite solvable K-group G, we show under certain hypotheses concerning the extension splitting G that the homogeneous space V:=G\G' with G' a semi-simple simply connected K-group has the weak approximation property (the hypotheses ensuring the triviality of the unramified algebraic Brauer group). We use then a more precise version of this result to prove the Hasse principle forhomogeneous spaces X under a semi-simple simply connected K-group G' with finite solvable geometric stabilizer, under certain hypotheses concerning the K-kernel (or K-lien) defined by X

Then we give some applications of these rules to the computation of the spectra of certain invariant invariant differential operators on complex Grassmannians. More precisely, we determine the spectra of the Hodge-Laplacian, the Bochner-Laplacian and the Dirac operator on homogeneous vector bundles over these manifolds. In the second part, we study some aspects of the equivariant geometry of complex projective spaces and Grassmannians from the point of view of ''fuzzy approximations''. In particular, using the abovely mentioned branching rules, we easily derive that every complex Grassmannian can be approximated by ''fuzzy homogeneous manifolds''. The appendix A of this work is essentially devoted to analysing the problem of computing the spectra of certain invariant differential operators on homogeneous vector bundles. In the appendix B, we compute the zeta-regularized determinants of the Dirac operator and its square on odd-dimensional complex projective spaces

Full textLet G be a semisimple Lie group (of higher rank) and Γ a Zariski dense subgroup of G (of infinite covolume). In this thesis, we discuss two questions related to the Benoist limit cone of Γ : one concerns random walks, the other topological mixing of the directional Weyl chamber flow. In the introduction, we state the main results of this thesis in their context. In the second chapter, we recall some general facts about Lie groups and loxodromic elements. In the third chapter, we prove that every point of the interior of the limit cone is a Lyapunov vector. In the fourth chapter, we construct local coordinates of G and give key tools for the remaining parts. In the fifth chapter, we introduce the invariant subsets of G. In the last chapter of this thesis, we prove the topological mixing criterion of regular directional Weyl chamber flow obtained with O. Glorieux and we generalize this criterion to Γ\G for a class of Lie groups including SL(n, R), SL(n, C), SO(p, p + 2)

Full textThis thesis deals with the spectral properties of the Toeplitz operators in relation to their associated symbol. In the first part, we give some classical results about Hardy space, model spaces and Bergman space. Afterwards, we expose some results about Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space. In particular, we discuss their spectrum and essential spectrum. Our work is inspired from two facts which have been proved on the Hardy space. First, considering a Toeplitz operator T, the norm, essential norm, spectral radius of T and the supremum of its symbol are equal. Secondly, on the Hardy space, spectrum, essential spectrum and essential range are strongly related. We answer the question of the equality between the norms, the spectral radius and the supremum of the symbol and between spectrum and essential range on the Bergman space. We look at these two properties on the Bergman space when the symbol is radial or quasihomogeneous. We answer these questions using the Berezin transform, the Mellin coefficients and the mean value of the symbol. The last part deals with the classical Szegö theorem which underline a link between the eigenvalues of a Toeplitz matrix sequence and its symbol. We give a result of the same type on Bergman space considering harmonic symbol wich have a continuous extension. We give a generalization, considering the sequence of the compressions of a Toeplitz operator on a sequence of model spaces
