Séonnet, Marie. "Vers une grammaire intonative de l'espagnol de Cuba." Paris 3, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007PA030085.
Full textDespite the large development of intonation studies in recent years, many investigators still deplore the absence of such studies in Spanish. Understandably so, if one looks at the few, but nevertheless existing studies, which raise questions such as the applicability or the objectivity of the employed theory, or the representativeness of corpuses. Morel and Danon-Boileau developed their Grammaire de l’intonation from a varied, spontaneous corpus. Most of all, they combine intonative feature analysis with the syntactic organisation of speech, thus pointing out the complementarity between segmental and suprasegmental constituents. The point was thus to collect a spontaneous oral corpus of the Cuban Spanish variety, before analysing it within the above theoretical framework. A detailed study of intonative features (fundamental frequency, intensity, time and pause) alone or in conjunction, enabled to point out some of these features’mechanisms, more often than not very close to the results found for French. Additionally, some of the constituents of the collected corpus were studied in relation to their intonational pattern. This study focused on ligateurs, ponctuants, postrhèmes and terminal parenthesis mechanisms, as well as on a communicational strategy called Nucleus-Catalysis

Full textIn this piece of work, we aim at giving an account of productiveness of deverbal substantives in Spanish. To do so, we begin from a systematic study of various creation forms of those terms. It goes from suffixation to transcategorisation of verbal words. In the first part of our work, we shall make an inventory of all the suffixes used and we shall offer our own analysis. There are two different groups. The first one is referred as "progressive derivation". The common characteristic of those suffixes is to create a phonological expansion regarding the verb basis. The second group represents "regressive derivation". We can then talk about phonological shortening. Finally, we shall tackle to the third group : the transforming of a verb into a substantive. We will thus use examples and at the same time, we will have to bring out a coherence between the signifier and the signified. Our second part deals with the evolution of deverbal substantives. We shall point out creation and renewal parameters and examine the notion of doubleness by reconsidering synonym and homonym concepts. We shall finally discuss neologism and come back to what builds on the acceptability of a new word. In the last part, we will offer a new approach of the sign through the signifier. This part is entitled semantics of the signifier. We shall consider the signifier as somethnig justified and not as something arbitrary. We view a reflex ion on a signifier form by using examples

Full textIn Balkan Judeo-Spanish the forms loke and siendo (ke) have grammatical functions that related linguistic structures in peninsular Spanish (gerondive of the verb ser ; nominalised relative clause marked for neuter gender introduced by lo que) don’t have. Siendo (ke) is an adverbial subordinator for cause, while loke functions as an interrogative pronoun and as a subordinating element. Based on the Judeo-Spanish diachronic corpus that covers the period between 1550 and 1935, the thesis describes the usage of these forms in modern period (last decades of 19th and first decades of 20th century), as well as their emerging and evolution in time. The diachronic analysis reveals the relationship between the new grammatical functions of loke and siendo (ke) and the pragmatic and semantic meaning of complex structures to which these forms are associated at discourse level. The grammaticalisation processes that can de identified according to the usage of these two forms in Judeo-Spanish at different periods seem to be conditioned in many ways by the existent linguistic structures (the constructions to which the interrogative pronoun qué and the subordinator que belong in the case of loke ; other adverbial subordinate clauses in the case of siendo (ke)). Within this perspective, the results of the analysis suggest that the analogy plays an important role in the lexicalisation of new grammatical units, and by this way, in the renewal of complex linguistic units components, as it is the case with subordinate clauses and interrogative constructions in Judeo-Spanish

Full textThis thesis analyses how important is verbal and lexical aspect in Spanish; in fact, this category allows us to explain and distinguish some grammatical pairs considered as being always commutable or even neutralized. This study examines, on the one hand, the final value of the prepositions por and para and how lexical aspect influences their commutation in a final proposition. On the other hand, this thesis analyses the values of the Spanish past (cantaba) and the periphrastic spanish form estar + -ndo from an aspectual point of view. This study also develops the role taken by verbal and lexical aspect on the commutation of these verbal forms. Furthermore, some lexical incompatibilities due to interaction of verbal and lexical aspect are treated here

Full textThe goal of the present study is to analyze Francophones’ acquisition of double mood selection in subordinate clauses in Spanish L2. 42 intermediate-advanced and advanced learners as well as a control group of 17 native Spanish speakers completed a grammaticality judgment test composed of 38 items. This test measured the (in)ability of Francophones to attain near-native proficiency in Spanish L2 as well as the factors that influence this interface phenomenon. The results demonstrate that there is a correlation between a high level of Spanish proficiency and the acquisition of double mood selection. They also show that certain Francophones possess near-native proficiency in Spanish, five having had a high level of contact with the L2 (marriage, family, long term immersion experiences) while four having had contact only in an educational setting. Finally, the results demonstrate that Universal Grammar acts as an omnipresent factor throughout the different stages of acquisition and that language transfer and individual aptitude both play a significant role in acquisition.

Full textOur approach is based on a simple principle according to which linguistics as a science of language is an enveloping process founded on the permanent questioning of the acquirements. Questioning motivated on one hand by the limited and relative different linguistic models relevance through the confrontation of the different tendencies that constitue them, and on the other hand by the multiplicity of approaches in the teaching of french and/or spanish grammar, both in the onomasiologic and semasiologic viewpoints. Even though our approach lays emphasis on the synchronic aspect of the language, it is obvious that it cannot exclude the diachronic aspect from its domain of action, considering its importance as regards to the historic evolution of language, constantly interrogated during language teaching. It is therefore about an analysis based on some specific components of language, notably morphological, syntaxical, semantic, lexical, phonetic and phonological aspects, for it's true that traditionally, these components as regards to the grammar are supposed to correspond to many components in language. Our methodology aims at analysing every domain concerned by the similarities, ambivalences and sometimes ambiguities of some structures in french and/or in spanish, having in mind the wish to see these too scientific grammars converted into more pedagogical ones
Lescano, Alfredo. "Vers une grammaire argumentative de la phrase : le cas de l'article défini et indéfini en français et en espagnol." Paris, EHESS, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008EHES0054.
Full textThe general aim of the present thesis is to develop the first stage of an argumentative grammar of the sentence supported by the description of the French articles LE and UN, and Spanish EL and UN. By the term "argumentative grammar" we designate the knowledge that allows to predict the meaning of a sentence in the argumentative layer of sense. We suppose that two semiotic layers coexist in the sense. Of utterances: one relevant to the study of reference and truth conditions, and another one formed only by discourses (that we will assume of an argumentative nature) and relationships between discourses. Our work attempts to describe this argumentative layer in an explicit way by integrating the Semantic Blocks Theory and the Theory of Polyphony. Our analysis of the article leads to the following main conclusions: firstly, that the argumentative grammar of the sentence must simultaneously take into account the theoretical objects of these two theories and secondly, that this grammar is independent of referential phenomena

Full textThe framework of our study is focused on the assessment of linguistic and metalinguistic knowledge of francophone adults learning Spanish as a foreign language. This knowledge constitutes the basis of grammatical competence built by learners as they develop skills in the target language. Our aim is the observation of linguistic and metalinguistic knowledge used by francophone adult learners of Spanish as a second language (L2). Thus, we designed and directed an experimental study to 30 French-speakers with a threshold-level in Spanish, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001). Our approach consisted of two experimental tasks: A decision making task and a task of oral production. The first task was conducted with a grammaticality judgement test in which participants had to evaluate, in a limited response time, a corpus of 36 sentences (presented one after the other, at both written and oral). The second task was conducted with the definitive confirmation of judgments about the corpus. Participants were thus asked to give a final judgement about the correctness of sentences (without measuring response time). If they judged a sentence as incorrect, they have to specify the error and explain it. As for the oral production task, the participants were asked to produce a descriptive and narrative speech in Spanish by using visual stimuli (a comic strip). The results achieved allowed us to collect data on the response time, on the sentences judgment ability, on the type of speech used to explain the error and on syntactical structures used spontaneously in oral speech. Those data were analyzed and discussed with the aim of providing insights on the capacity of francophone adults learning Spanish as a foreign language for detecting and explaining errors in the target language; on their difficulties in acquiring the Spanish grammatical system; and on their knowledge to analyze and produce structures in target language. The results enabled us to reconsider the learning of Spanish grammar otherwise with a view to teaching models adapted to the metacognitive and metalinguistic skills of francophone learners

Full textThrough statistical analysis, this is a survey of the overall working of argumentative connectors in French and Spanish. The calculation has been made from a significant corpus of written material, selecting thirty connectors in each language and defining the underlying structure of argumentative discourse. The grammar of usage thus obtained makes it possible to tackle the problems of comparison and translation and to study in a pragmatic way the logical operations favoured in each language. Major differences appear, notably as regards the choice of a range of connectors which is more restricted in Spanish, together with the way fundamental logical notions like opposition, cause and consequence are used. The whole research tends to prove that French is more likely to justify what has been said using abstract logic (the logic of enunciation) while Spanish will rather operate on clauses and the semantic content of utterances (the logic of the uttered sentence)

Full textThe practice of Spanish in speech implies different possibilities of expression. It comes up against the normative rigidity of the temporal concordance of prescriptive grammars: tense of the principal / tense of the subordinate, sometimes including the anteriority and posteriority of the processes. Our objective attempts to determine this misunderstood mode that is the subjunctive. Our approach consisted in accounting for the different reasons for the temporal discordance in the contemporary peninsular press. Indeed, sometimes the journalist-reporter has the choice between two temporal possibilities of the subjunctive. Thus, we show that a single meaning includes all the meanings attributed to this mode whose parameters can be determined thanks to L. Gosselin’s computational theory of modalities. Our research highlights the multifactorial causes that are sometimes interacting (i.e. the double semantics of modal alternation introductory verbs, the type of discourse, the enunciative double positioning, the speaker’s point of view, the temporal dislocation, the adverbs of opposite time in the two propositions, the textual coherence, the inferences, etc.) which can lead, despite the non-concordance, to a better expressiveness thanks to the sense effects of the times of the subjective

Full textIn this thesis, the study of the Copulus verbs Ser and Estar is approached from two complementary points of view. On the one hand, a grammatical analysis of a large corpus of authentic oral occurrences is carried out in order to evaluate the relevance of certain theoretical tools belonging to a cognitive approach to the question. On the other hand, from a second language teaching context, experimental research is conducted to examine the influence that the type of grammatical approach used in teaching can have on learners' outcomes. In both cases, priority is given to the empirical validation of working hypotheses according to methodologies belonging, in one case, to linguistics and, in another case, to language didactics. In this way, it was possible to identify the field of specialization of each of the disciplines in terms of the description of the above-mentioned copulas, as well as the points of convergence between the fields of study concerned

Full textThis thesis provides an explicative case study method to explore the "sequence of tenses" in Old Spanish thanks to the theory of moods developed by Gilles Luquet. We first examined the contributions of grammars and linguists on this syntactic phenomenon. Nevertheless, the ongoing controversy on the existence of a rule – the 2007 "new rule" proposed by Jerzy Kowal –, its contradictions and weaknesses ("violations") are all factors that make it essential to rethink the criteria that determine verbal forms. The collected data, drawn from linguistic databases, were classified according to the traditional terminology of embedded clauses : substantive, adjective and adverbial clauses. We attempted to determine the factors underlying the alternation, the emergence or disappearance of certain verbal forms. Variations – diachronic, diaphasic, diastratic and diatopic variations – were also analyzed. Statistics were used to fix the magnitude of the patterns and to guarantee the reliability of the observed evolutions. This study reveals that the medieval speaker wasn't more governed by a ''sequence of tenses'' based on mechanical congruence than the actual speaker. On the contrary, the speaker himself was able to (in)actualize parts of his speech in function of specific communicative purpose

Full textThis doctoral research work is embedded in the field of applied linguistics but it is also based on Educational Sciences research. Its main goal is to study grammar teaching practices in the school context of England. The specificity of this field lies in the fact that learners are only slightly exposed to explicit grammar learning during primary school. Therefore, they are trained to think about language as they start their first modern foreign language lessons at school. Our research aims at understanding in what ways modern foreign language teachers bring their students to develop their language awareness in this particular context. We wish to figure out whether teachers use peculiar strategies to make up for the lack of metalinguistic awareness of their students. To do so, we conducted an exploratory and qualitative field research built on a holistic, ecological and interdisciplinary approach, taking into account the various foreign languages taught at school (German, Spanish and French). The collected data (MFL classroom observations and teachers semi-structured interviews) has revealed interesting analytical perspectives which bring light on teachers’grammar practices

Full textThe study investigates the history of the word-class of participle through a close study of a corpus of French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian grammars which were published between the 15th and 18th centuries. The comparative approach is based on the methodological principle of “series of texts”, by grouping and collating a hundred works according to several variable parameters: the chronology, the theme or the grammatical tradition of the language in question. The first part of the study deals with the linguistic categorization and questions the nature of the non-finite verbal forms, especially the participle and its use in an analytical verbal form. The second part deals with the history of the participle from a more general point of view. Thus, after an overview of the problematic aspects of Greek and Latin grammarians, the analysis focuses on the treatment of the word-class in the grammars of the Romance languages. The third part focuses on the approaches and concepts used by the Renaissance grammarians to deal with compound tenses and on how they described and (re)-categorized the participle forms of these verbal tenses

Full textPossessives invalidate the opposition between Western (Spanish and Portuguese) and Eastern (Catalan) Ibero-Romance languages. Nowadays, in Catalan and European Portuguese, in the pre-nominal position, possessives are mainly preceded by the article (o meu amigo, el meu amic), while in standard Spanish, they are constructed without an article (mi amigo). In the Middle Ages, possessives may allow the article or not and the two systems alternate in the different linguistic areas of the Peninsula. This thesis sheds light on the evolution of the alternation between [article + possessive + noun] and [possessive + noun] in Catalan, Spanish and European Portuguese from the 13th to the 20th century. More specifically, this work addresses the question of the motivation of the variation by morphosyntactic, semantic or pragmatic factors. This research is carried out using the idiolectal method proposed by Barra Jover (2015), according to which variation must be analysed within productions to be considered separately and the relevant hypotheses must be tested against all the data of a text and each individual text, in order to check their solidity or to falsify them. The large chronological scope of the corpus and the substantial dataset, due in particular to the large number of examples examined per text, together with the detailed manual analysis of each occurrence of the possessive, and a systematic comparison with other languages, allow this thesis to combine precise analysis with a broad overview of the phenomenon.Ultimately, this thesis aims at contributing to a better understanding of the process by which a variation phenomenon may or may not lead to linguistic fragmentation

Full textThis work presents a study of linguistic expressions of opinion from different sources in Spanish texts. The work includes the definition of a model for opinion predicates and their arguments (source, topic and message), the creation of a lexicon of opinion predicates which have information from the model associated, and the implementation of three systems. The first system, based on contextual rules, gets good results for the F-measure score (partial match): predicate, 92%; source, 81%; topic, 75%; message, 89%; full opinion, 85%. In addition, for source identification the F-measure for exact match is 79%. The second system, based on Conditional Random Fields (CRF), was developed only for the identification of sources, giving 76% of F-measure (exact match). The third system, which combines the two techniques (rules and CRF), gives a value of 83% of F-measure (exact match), showing that the combination yields interesting results. As regards the identification of sources, our system compared to other work developed for languages other than Spanish, gives very satisfactory results. Indeed these works had scores that fall between 63% and 89.5%.Moreover, in addition to the systems made for the identification of opinions, our work has led to the construction of several resources for Spanish: a lexicon of opinion predicates, a 13,000 words corpus with opinions annotated and a 40,000 words corpus with opinion predicates end sources annotated

Full textThis MA thesis is dedicated to the learning of the Spanish prepositions by French-speakers. We are interested in identifying and analyzing the most frequent errors in the use of the prepositions by French-speakers, which will bring us to create activities that will help them make fewer mistakes. We believe that the difficulty partly lies in the fact that students don’t know how to use them correctly. Therefore, we find it important to present the uses of the main prepositions in Spanish given by the Manual of Nueva gramática de la lengua española and other studies. The teaching of grammar in classes of Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) in Quebec follows the guidelines established by the Common European Framework and the Plan curricular of the Cervantes Institute. The students develop their grammatical competence in an inductive way; they try to understand the rules by themselves and create their own hypotheses which they will later confirm or refute thanks to some formal explanations from the teacher and practice. On the other hand, this tendency to leave the learning of the grammar mostly in the hands of the students can also bring about the fossilization of certain errors if there aren’t enough explanations or practice. The method of Error Analysis is the most effective to analyze the process of Spanish learning as a foreign language. The errors are a starting point to understand where the difficulties of the students lie and allow the teachers to bring the necessary changes in their teaching methods. Our revision of some investigations made with this method of analysis will allow us to better understand the causes of the most frequent errors French-Speakers make using Spanish prepositions. Our analysis of three textbooks used today in the classrooms of cégeps and universities of Quebec will prove that the prepositions are not practiced enough, especially in the intermediate level. We will consequently propose activities that will allow the students to practice the Spanish prepositions in a more effective way.

Full textAbstract According to Leeneberg's critical period hypothesis from the sixties, a child can acquire a second language approximately until puberty, for afterwards the lateralization of the brain takes place and the acquisition of second language becomes more difficult. Further on, Chomsky’s research would contribute to this theory with the Universal Grammar idea or the inborn universal linguistic elements that we use in order to acquire mother tongue. While the Universal Grammar is still on, the already acquired Mother Tongue continues to develop. As a result, the acquisition of another language during this period becomes a natural process, leading to the conclusion that the earlier a child starts learning a second language, the better its acquisition will be. Therefore and for the purpose of this research, a theoretical framework and the error analysis, the tool allowing the teacher to predict some error in order to create the adequate language strategies for effective second language acquisition, are used.
