Full textThe goal of the present study is to analyze Francophones’ acquisition of double mood selection in subordinate clauses in Spanish L2. 42 intermediate-advanced and advanced learners as well as a control group of 17 native Spanish speakers completed a grammaticality judgment test composed of 38 items. This test measured the (in)ability of Francophones to attain near-native proficiency in Spanish L2 as well as the factors that influence this interface phenomenon. The results demonstrate that there is a correlation between a high level of Spanish proficiency and the acquisition of double mood selection. They also show that certain Francophones possess near-native proficiency in Spanish, five having had a high level of contact with the L2 (marriage, family, long term immersion experiences) while four having had contact only in an educational setting. Finally, the results demonstrate that Universal Grammar acts as an omnipresent factor throughout the different stages of acquisition and that language transfer and individual aptitude both play a significant role in acquisition.

Full textThis thesis provides an explicative case study method to explore the "sequence of tenses" in Old Spanish thanks to the theory of moods developed by Gilles Luquet. We first examined the contributions of grammars and linguists on this syntactic phenomenon. Nevertheless, the ongoing controversy on the existence of a rule – the 2007 "new rule" proposed by Jerzy Kowal –, its contradictions and weaknesses ("violations") are all factors that make it essential to rethink the criteria that determine verbal forms. The collected data, drawn from linguistic databases, were classified according to the traditional terminology of embedded clauses : substantive, adjective and adverbial clauses. We attempted to determine the factors underlying the alternation, the emergence or disappearance of certain verbal forms. Variations – diachronic, diaphasic, diastratic and diatopic variations – were also analyzed. Statistics were used to fix the magnitude of the patterns and to guarantee the reliability of the observed evolutions. This study reveals that the medieval speaker wasn't more governed by a ''sequence of tenses'' based on mechanical congruence than the actual speaker. On the contrary, the speaker himself was able to (in)actualize parts of his speech in function of specific communicative purpose

Full textThe practice of Spanish in speech implies different possibilities of expression. It comes up against the normative rigidity of the temporal concordance of prescriptive grammars: tense of the principal / tense of the subordinate, sometimes including the anteriority and posteriority of the processes. Our objective attempts to determine this misunderstood mode that is the subjunctive. Our approach consisted in accounting for the different reasons for the temporal discordance in the contemporary peninsular press. Indeed, sometimes the journalist-reporter has the choice between two temporal possibilities of the subjunctive. Thus, we show that a single meaning includes all the meanings attributed to this mode whose parameters can be determined thanks to L. Gosselin’s computational theory of modalities. Our research highlights the multifactorial causes that are sometimes interacting (i.e. the double semantics of modal alternation introductory verbs, the type of discourse, the enunciative double positioning, the speaker’s point of view, the temporal dislocation, the adverbs of opposite time in the two propositions, the textual coherence, the inferences, etc.) which can lead, despite the non-concordance, to a better expressiveness thanks to the sense effects of the times of the subjective

Full textAs we approach the second millennium the second millennium the Castilian version of Spanish has two imperfect subjunctive forms: - ra and -se. Two main works have been accomplished in our research project: bibliographic research: in order to provide a basis for my theoretical framework, the research of all linguistic schools of "the - ra and - se question" has been thoroughly examined. I have also taken into account both the approaches and the conclusions of research projects that have been conducted this century. Research concerning the corpus: I compiled a base line corpus (24797 pages) with extracts covering the last fifty years - including such diverse fields as narration, theatre and cinema. Following the comparative analysis of diverse examples according to a wide range of criteria, I often came across contextual or cotextual features which seem to suggest the use of either - ra or -se as a result of my analysis, the continuing existence of two imperfect subjunctive forms in contemporary Spanish appears to be justified by the fact that they express two distinct degrees of disengagement

Full textUnder a multidisciplinary approach that combines linguistics, foreign language acquisition and applied linguistics, this dissertation aims to analyze three features of the Spanish language that French-speaking learners find hard to master and use effectively 1) past tenses, 2) modal choice and 3) ser vs estar. We consider tenses as deictics and, therefore, we propose not to separate them from the notions of time and space. Moreover, the existence of an epistemic space (the speaker’s situation) and a deictic centre (the space from which the speaker organizes his utterance) will enable us to explain the modal values of the tenses. Furthermore, we intend to demonstrate that the organization topic-comment influences the choice of the tense and the mood in a sentence. As for the difference between ser and estar, we focus on the aspectual nuances (dynamic versus static) that each verb carries. Our conclusions in linguistics are completed by case studies: one case study in foreign language acquisition and three case studies in applied linguistics. Through a cross-sectional study in language acquisition, we have been able to describe the interlanguage of a sample group whose subjects were French monolingual college students. We also carried three study cases in order to determine how our teaching, which was inspired by the analysis of these features, helped first and second year French college students perform better. The case studies in foreign language acquisition and applied linguistics have helped us to identify the rules that govern these features of the Spanish language

Full textThis study focuses on the periphrastic form había- + do/-to/-cho that the grammatical tradition identifies as the ‘pluperfect (past perfect) indicative’ in contemporary Spanish. After reviewing the different approaches to this verbal form, we provide a unique signified for this form that is able to subsume all its discursive manifestations. For this purpose, we adopt the theoretical principles of the ‘Linguistics of the signifier’, which postulates the unity of the linguistic sign – i.e. a signifier corresponds to a single signified, and vice versa – and gives priority to the semiological structure of the signifier. This approach leads us to reexamine había- + do/-to/-cho within the signifying networks of Spanish, and to reconsider the modal structure of the verbal system. Finally, we describe the discursive syntactic behaviour of the Spanish pluperfect, in the development of narrative sequences, but also in certain Latin American diatopic occurrences (contact Spanish / Guarani in particular) since they are ‘borderline case’ among the pluperfect discursive occurrences

Full textMinorities are the product of history, conquests, defeats and border changes. No two national histories are alike, however, minorities, in their diversity, find themselves in situations that appear similar the one another. In this overall context, the objective of this research is to better understand to what extent national and international minority rights effectively meet the needs of individuals belonging to those minorities. To do so, two issues that reoccure in the grievances of members of minorities have been selected for study. These are firstly the consideration shown towards housing specificities (in their diversity) and secondly, the possibility of communicating in one’s own language. Following the presentation of international law related to these issues, is studied the way this law, or better said these laws, are transposed and implemented in the national systems (in fact, there are major variants between the protection offered by universal organs and the one offered by European and American regional organs). In order to take into consideration the diversity of national situations, six countries were selected for this study. These were Spain, France and Lithuania in the European context, and Canada, Costa Rica and Paraguay in the American context. Our findings show that those who govern pretend to be unaware of the benefits related to adequate protection of minorities for the stability of national societies, as well as for democracy at large. As such, they are not always ready to implement the provisions that aim to protect persons belonging to minorities and claim the interest of the public good or arguments based on the unity of their people, territory or nation as reasons for doing so. In addition, it should be mentioned that some practical difficulties exist in the implementation of adopted norms. These include difficulties caused by financial reasons, for example, the cost of positive measures aiming at effective equality in the field of education, media, private and family life or the obligation to share with indigenous people the benefits generated by mining. Other reasons may be linked to underlying intolerance present in the majority population, for example, attacks on Roma settlements or prohibition on speaking a minority language in some spheres or places. However, the international rights of minorities are constantly evolving, drawing on the diversity of regional contexts and based on human rights and the right not to be discriminated against, as well as on the application, to all minorities, of elements of the rights recognized to indigenous peoples as the first inhabitants of a given territory. Moreover, in an effort to promote genuine democracy of a participatory nature, human rights bodies push national authorities to involve ever more members of minorities in decisions that affect them, thereby taking their needs into consideration. The comparative study of the protection of minorities in Europe and in America enables reporting the practical difficulties preventing minorities from being effectively protected and assists in understanding to what extent international law can help countries overcome these difficulties
