Full textColombia is a highly diverse country in sociolinguistic terms. Sixty six indigenous languages and several local varieties of Spanish attest this diversity. Indigenous minority groups as well as rural populations, coming from different regions of the country, converge within the largest urban metropoles such as Bogotà, Medellin or Cali. As a consequence, linguistic and dialectal contact situations emerge, and urge to be studied through a sociolinguistic approach as they may entai) linguistic and identity-related issues In this study, I worked with a Quichuan indigenous group from Equateur. They have lived in Cal for more than fifty years and their main income activity involves selling clothes at the city center. Quichuas in this city live within an asymmetrical contact situation vis-à-vis the Spanish speaking majority group. In their linguistic repertoires we can observe the Andean Spanish variety spoken in Equateur, the Quichuan variety which is their heritage language, and the Cali Spanish variety they adopted when they arrived in the city. In their linguistic social practices, we can particularly observe linguistic variation related phenomena such as codeswitching, dialect-switching, pronominal system and article system simplification, word order variation, anc phonetic variation, i. E. , /s/ phoneme. For this dissertation, I especially focused on variation of word order in the Andean Spanish variety they speak. From a corpus of linguistic social practices gathered in situ during an ethnographic-like fieldwork, I observed a high frequency of syntactic OV constructions and doubling constructions. For example, ella amiga noms es (Lit. She, friend only is), ah eso yo ne entiende (Lit. Ah that I don't understand) or even ahi yo vivo ahi (Lit. There I live there). Previous works on Andean Spanish (Haboud 1998; Merma Molina 2007; Palacios Alcaine 2013;Pfänder 2009; Muntendam 2009) suggest that these constructions are influenced by quichua word order (which is a SOV language), or that we deal with a case of linguistic convergence between Quichua and Spanish. They also suggest that pragmatic or stylistic factors (Muysken 1984) may motivate this kind of syntactic constructions in Andean Spanish. Even if these explanations are seductive, I consider that, following the multicausality principle (Thomason 2001; Heine & Kuteva 2005; Aikhenvald 2006), it is necessary to seek for multifactorial explanations to this phenomenon. In consequence, within a contact linguistic perspective taking into account language variation, I propose a plurifactorial analysis (Chamoreau & Léglise 2013; Léglise 2013) of word order variation in Andean Spanish spoken by Quichuas from Cali. To do this, two principles were followed: (1) contact phenomena are the result of the interaction of different intersystemic, intrasystemic, and extrasystemic factors; (2) the interaction of different factors may be meaningful in conversation for it may have implications on subjective and intersubjective positioning of speakers (Dubois 2002; Bucholtz & Hall 2005). I tried to show how these factors interact with each other producing word order variation. Findings reveal that word order variation is more complex than previous works suggested. In fact, it is extremely difficult to say that variations in word order are produced exclusively by language contact or by pragmatic strategies allowed by Spanish information structure. The high frequency of OV constructions observed in my corpus is the result of the interaction of several factors. Language contact, as one of these factors, may provoke a « snowball effect » (Thomason 2001) which reinforces the high productivity of OV constructions in Andean Spanish. Finally, following a sequential analysis of conversation (Auer 1995), I proposed complementary explanations which highlight the meaningfulole that OV constructions may have in social interaction. They seem to contribute to the expression of difference and/or similarity through ephemeral stances performed by speakers within conversation

Full textThe focus of our work is on “portmanteau words”. Indeed, results of studies of semantics and structural lexicology have shown that there is no sign that is not derived from another sign and therefore of lexical creation which is not a reminder of already existing structures. At the heart of reflection on the motivation of the sign, a portmanteau word represents the sign grasped in its totality and its segmentality. To understand the technique of the arrangement that leads to the formation of words, Alain Finkielkraut, argues that it is paramount to transgress the linearity of the sign by reciting one’s speech lesson backwards. The portmanteau word considers this assumption seriously considering that in reality words contained in the dictionary constitute stray pieces of an unknown lexicon. Henceforth, a word is no longer a group of different sounds corresponding to a meaning, a passive vehicle carrying a signification as taught by the old grammar dictionary. This is why Freud and Saussure have clearly demonstrated in a peculiar way, that through the mechanism of the slip, the meaning of a word can also be understood by metanalysis for one, and by anagrammatic derivation for the other. Thus, whatever the process, the analog mechanism remains the same, ensuring the fusion of sound and meaning. Finally, the purpose of this thesis will be to explore, in the context of a semiological study, the mechanisms at work in the formation of portmanteau words as well as the effects of meaning and generated style by this type of creation

Full textThe word-order in Greek only enjoys apparent freedom and must be analyzed as a linguistic feature and not as an exercise in style. Starting from a corpus of forty-two extracts that reflect as faithfullyas possible the spoken language, and ininterruptedly spanning twentyfive centuries, we have studied the place of the determiner in the genitive, of the object personal pronouns, of the subject (more accurately of its "epitaxis") and of the adjectives. From this analogical and contrastive study have emerged trends of evolution in the word-order as well as landmarks in chronology. Throughout the centuries, the polymorphism of ancient greek has evolved and becomed selective. Thus the Greek language has selected, rejected and retained, recently adopting a less flexible word-order, in which usage has eventually become the norm. A more comprehensive corpus and additional analyses would undoubtedly enable us to strengthen the scientific assessment that has already been achieved and to promote studies in greek diachronic syntax

Wang, Honglu. "L'ordre des mots et le changement d'ordre des mots en chinois : analyse synchronique et diachronique." Paris, EHESS, 2005. http://www.theses.fr/2005EHES0040.
Full textThis linguistic work on typology is a study on the order of constituents in chinese. Is chinese a S-O-V (subject - verb- object) language or a S-V-O language? This dissertation discusses in detail the different arguments given by the tenants of the two different hypotheses. It also deals with other word orders than the sole order of the "subject", "verb" and "object" constituents. The work is divided into three parts : one diachronic part untitled "Word order in ancient Chinese", one synchronic part on "Word order in contemporary Chinese" and one part in where our corpus is analyzed. The diachronic work shows that the Chinese was originally a S-V-O language and has been unchanged all along its history. The changes were however significant in other areas : prepositions, classifiers, etc. It is showed in the synchronic part, that the hypothesis of S-V-O is more convincing. The third part presents two oral speeches belonging both to Standard Mandarin. One detailed analysis of these two speeches show undoubdetly that contemporary Chinese is indeed a S-V-O language

Full textThe main objective of this study is to propose new taxonomic models to describe and interpret the main linguistic expressions of vulgarity within the Spanish-speaking countries, putting a special emphasis on "bad words" as criteria to class them have always been vague or ambiguous due to the following reasons : 1) Confusion between syntactic and semantic analysis, 2) Censorship and prudishness of lexicographers, 3) lack of consistent analytical grid. By overcoming those methodological obstacles, this study sets up the guideliness for a new "argoto-jurological" typology of the Spanish lexicon (based on the study of slang and bad words). To do so, we integrate universal categories such as "mot-souche" ("root-word") and "mot tabou" (taboo word") as well as some neologistic concepts applicable to mexican slang's specific phenomena such as "minimalist euphemism", "acrophonemic stigmatization" and "coaxial polysemous asemantism"

Full textThe word order appears to be the major problem in the phenomenon of the adverbial modification in chinese. The crucial distinction between the two types of adverbial elements, i. E. Adverbial and complement, is their pre- and postverbal position. In addition, they can be distinguished by their semantic properties, their scopes and their hierarchy levels. The adverbial sequence depends on the difference of scope. The locative which takes the initial position of the existential sentences functions as a topic. The adverbial propositions such as the causals and the conditionals, though their distribution is similar, do not have the same syntactic structure. The restrictive distribution of the adverbial elements in the cleft sentences can be accounted of by their scope as well as the stative nature of the predicates that they associate with

To enable us to do this we selected a complete collection of neological terms taken from spanish publications. Firstly we make a descriptive inventory of the lexical creation and neology by analysing the role of the press in this area. The second part presents and analyses the neological collection through its most productive process of neology: borrowing, derivation and the composition, the abbreviation. In the third part we offer an analysis of translation problems relative to computer and internet language. With this analysis we are able to put forward a typology of different ways of forming these new words. Finally in the fourth part we do a general review of the results and findings and give quantitive answers obtained from the analysis and data

Full textThis thesis deals with the postposition of subject in modern french. Both oral and written data have been collected. Three parameters have been used to describe four different types. Each of them is specific and can't be reduced to the others. The type i includes all the constructions in which a "quelement" appears before the verb. The oral data shows that the distinction between simple and reported questions is not the best way to describe that problem. All the verbs can be found in this organization which allows the clitic and non clitic subject. The type ii collects what is generally called the "incisor". Only a few verbs (five different groups have been described) can occur there. The verb is weakened : it has lost the property to construct any elements but a clitic on its left, it can't easily change of modality. It presents a combination of two units (a verbal one, the "incisor", and another one anteposed) between them the relations are not syntactic but belong to the macrosyntaxe. In the type iii, only the clitic subject is possible. The sentence always has a non assertive modality. The term which appears before the verb gives the modality. When no element is realized at this place, the interrogative modality is the most frequent. The type iv gathers together all the cases in which only a non clitic subject is possible. . .

Full textThis work examines the relations between word order and prosody in Modem Greek. The aim is to propose syntactic, prosodic and communicative criteria explaining the choice of one word order among all the possible linearizations. First, the possible word orders for a given dependency tree are determined. Second, the correspondences between a given linearization and all the possible melodic configurations (corresponding ta a given communicative structure) are established. Two experimental studies (on ward stress and on the contours of constituents) show the importance of the communicative structure in defining the prosodic contours. The analysis is placed in the Meaning-Text Framework. The grammar I present covers the analysis of complex structures. The Greek data are also compared to French and Korean. Finally, I present an implementation of the correspondences between the syntactic level and the sound output, via the topological and phonological levels

Full textThis research is part of a perspective of translation assistance and neological creation. The scientific object is to draw up the linguistic profile of the English, French and Spanish compound nouns of the Internet lexicon and to design a method for translating the English compounds to come into French and Spanish built upon a standard equivalence system between the source and target compounds. The first part aims at outlining the compound noun and isolating compounds among all the lexical units. The morphosyntactic and semantic profile of the English, French and Spanish compound nouns of the Internet terminology is outlined in the second part so that translators can be supplied with the required information and the foundations for the future equivalence system can be laid. The terms were collected in a trilingual corpus made up of computer magazines. The analysis of the compounds is divided into three parts (morphosyntactic profile, semantic profile and combination rules). The methodological and theoretical background required to develop the standard equivalences is set in the third part. The creation of the English-French and English-Spanish equivalence system, the obtained results and the identification of the exceptions are also explained in this part. After having considered the interest of computerizing the equivalence system for translators, the research ends with the automation of the equivalence system, i. E. The design of a translation assistance tool. A multilingual terminological database is created
Hennequin, Laurent. "Les relations syntaxiques dans la phrase en thai͏̈." Paris, INALCO, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997INAL0001.
Full textThis study gives a comprehensive description of syntactic relations in the sentences of contemporary standard Thai by using the methods affiliated to the Saussurian school of linguistics. After a review of the literature on the subject (Chapter I), the study proceeds in examining the working concepts used for the description, as well as the problems which occur when adapting them to a language such as Thai (Chapter II). Particular attention is paid to the importance of word order in this language and to the treatment which is given to the signifying units by examining the problems of their invariability and of their liability to asume various syntactic functions. This is followed by a description of the syntactic structure of Thai sentences with an analysis of their components, namely a predicate, participants, adjunct phrases, dependencies of the former elements, and relators, together with the devices used to establish the hierarchic structure of the sentence (Chapter III). The following chapter makes the inventory of the various syntactic relations the elements can contract between each other within a sentence depending on its hierarchy and the inventory of the paradigms instituted by the possible relations. Some other facts are observed concerning the behaviour of signifying units in order to indicate some features original to Thai. The last chapter (Chapter V) examines, in terms of tendencies, how the units are allocated to the various paradigms thus identified. Finally, the conclusion examines the correlations between the components of the syntactic system as identified and between these components and the rest of the system as a whole so as to present an insight into the outline of the systemic organisation of Thai in its originality

Full textThis dissertation gives a systematic and comprehensive description and analysis of the distribution of postverbal nominal subjects in French. Although Modern French is often described as a language with a generalized subject-verb word order (SV: JeanS arrivaV), in some contexts, the subject can follow the verb (VS: Alors arrivaV JeanS). All recent global approaches to VS have privileged either a syntactic, or a semantic or a pragmatic analysis. The present study challenges these approaches by offering a detailed description of the distribution of VS based on both syntactic and pragmatic factors, and an analysis which involves syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties of both the VS construction and the context it appears in

Full textThis research consists in a systematic analysis of the verbal constructions of classical arabic, in particular an analysis of simple transitive sentences. An investigation of the work of traditional grammarians has led us to reformulate certain criteria of transitivity, and re-examine the problem of word order in these constructions. The relationship between transitivity and intransitivity is studied from the viewpoint of morphosyntactic relations : middle forms, reflexive forms, etc. We then study the characteristics of certain complements, including the dative and locative. Finally, we present a commentary on the verb classes, which have been grouped into 13 tables according to their morphological, syntactical and distributional regularities

Full textIn this thesis, I study the principles of word order in Homeric Greek. As it is the case in classical prose, the fundamental principle consists in aligning constituents according to the information structure (IS) of the utterance, i.e. the expression of topic and focus relations. Topic expressions differ in their ratification status. As for focus, two constructions may be identified : a narrow focus construction, where the only element in the focus is placed immediately before the verb, and a broad focus construction, where the verb, optionally followed by other focal elements, builds up a focus domain ; the construal of this domain may be broad or narrow on its last element. Having described the expression of IS in the clause and the various contexts in which the different constructions occur, I explore the margins of the clause (pre- and postclausal positions), and I show that questions embed propositions with their own IS. In the demonstration, I make use of the prosodic partitioning of the utterance, as indicated by the position of postpositives and ratified topic expressions. Then, after studying hyperbaton in Classical and Homeric Greek, I show that tmesis, in Homer, is a kind of pseudo noun incorporation. Finally, building on this linguistic study, I reevaluate Homeric enjambment and try to identify a trope of Homeric poetry (narrative σῆμα), whereby a word (like kalós or stê/éstē) is placed in initial position in the line in order to mark the progression of the narrative

Full textThis dissertation deals with meaning construction of linguistic complex expressions, particularly with + adjective-noun ; conceptual composition. Its main goal is to build up a theoretic frame suitable for the analysis of semantic problems concerning grammatical polymorphy, lexical polysemy or even metonymy. Such a theoretic frame is mainly conceived on the basis of notions stemmed from langacker's cognitive grammar, but ideas and formulations from both formal semantics (predicate logic, situation semantics,. . . ) and generative lexicon (pustejovsky, franks. . . ) are also taken into account the work as a whole relies on the hypothesis that linguistic expressions are directly linked to the conceptualization devices used by a speaker-listener in order to construe and organize the conceptual space (i. E. The universe of interpretation). Such conceptualizations devices are specified and characterized at different levels of abstaction for example, syntactic forms are conceived as instructions which configure and characterize semantic categories on the basis of a very schematic informational content to carry out such a category characterization, this work examines in detail the internal organisation of predicate structures, particularly the assignment operation of an entity to a predicate role. Lexical forms are also conceived as instructions which configure and characterise entities in the conceptual space. Yet, they do not characterise schematic categories, but an undetermined amount of assumptions concerning the organization of informational content at different levels of specification. This work relies on the conceptualization devices to build up a formal pattern of the semantic composition process. Such a compositional process is conceived as a set of conceptualization operations working on several aspects of the combined entities in order to integrate them into a composite entity. Taking into account the theoretical pattern of semantic composition defined previously, the last part of the dissertation describes the conceptual construction of some adjective-noun expressions

Full textThis dissertation, devoted to hyperbaton in Latin, is divided into three chapters. The aim of chapter I is to examine the concept of hyperbaton used by Roman rhetoricians grammarians. It shows that this term is used in two distinct ways. Firstly, hyperbaton in the narrow sense covers anastrophe and transiectio, i.e. a discontinuous phrase, especially a discontinuous noun phrase. Secondly, Roman grammarians conceive hyperbaton in a broad sense for designating five types of inversion of word order. Furthermore, Julian of Toledo adds a type of “long hyperbaton”, i.e. long inserted parentheses. The first part of chapter II provides an overview of reflections about hyperbaton in philological and linguistic literature. Hyperbaton is traditionally regarded as a stylistic figure; however, Modern studies on this topic focus on pragmatic implication of the use of discontinuous phrases. The second part of chapter II presents the concept of framing and median field (sequence of inserted words), developed by German linguistics. Chapter III provides a typology of words inserted into a discontinuous noun phrase formed by a genitive and its head noun. Attention is paid to the order in which inserted elements are linearised. The research is based on a corpus of discontinuous noun phrases collected mainly in Caesar, Cicero, and Historia Augusta. The median field can be formed by various words or groups of words. Examples of median fields with two, three, and more words and their ordering are presented in synoptic tables

Full textThe object of study is to propose an approach which seems most relevant highlighting the various operating modes from circonstants of time, place and manner in the sentence of Gustave Flaubert. These modes are based on the psychomecanic of the language of Gustave Guillaume, and particularly on the theory of the incidence. But it is initially necessary to define circonstant and to propose the linguistic criteria for its identification. The thesis thus consists of three principal parts. The first part poses the theoretical framework of this research, starting from a definition of the concept of circonstant in language. This part deals in detail with grammars and work of linguistics (including the most recent aspects of the question). In the second part, we discusse as a starting point the typology of the incidences of Claude Guimier who concentrates on English adverbs (1988) and the adverbs in - lies in French (1996). Three operating modes of the circonstants can thus be distinguished: the endophrastic intra-predicative circonstants, the exophrastic circonstants and the circonstants which range from intra to extra-prédicativité. The third and last part of this work is the one which shows the stylistic importance and the poetic value of circonstants in the work of Flaubert

Full textThe goal of this dissertation is to study how the ablative prepositions yu, zi, cong, you, zicong and da evolve syntactically from the Pre-archaic period (14th - 11th c. BC. ), through the Early Archaic (11th - 6th c. BC. ), the Late Archaic (5th - 3rd c. BC. ), the Pre-medieval (206 BC. - 220 AD. ), the Early Medieval (3rd - 6th c. ), to the Late Medieval period (6th - mid 13th c. ). These prepositions have been attested for the first time at different periods : yu, zi, cong, and you appeared in the Shang inscriptions (the jiaguwen), zicong in the Late-archaic Chinese, da in the Late-medieval period. Furthermore, the word order distribution of PPs is also diverse. Except zicong and da, these prepositions occur in the postvebal as well as preverbal position. The PPs with yu tended to occupy the postverbal position before the Pre-medieval period, while the majority of PPs with zi, cong and you moved to the preverbal position since the Early Archaic period

Full textThis dissertation seeks to identify the constraints that define the use of the Homeric tmesis and the general characteristics of its syntactic aspects. First, this study describes and clarifies the degrees of dependency between the prepositions-preverbs used in a tmesis and the verb of the clause in which it is used, both on the actantial and semantic levels. It also examines the relation between the tmesis and the word order from the perspective of the separability between the prepositions-preverb (P) and the verb, by analyzing both the criterion of the initial position of the preposition-preverb in a tmesis, and the number and the function of the constituents present between P and the verb. Eventually, this study looks at the possible morphological constraints of a tmesis, like the number of syllables or the phonological status of the prepositions-preverbs, in relation with the metrical factor. The morphological study also involves the relations between the tmesis and the double preverbs, as well as between tmesis and augment, and considers eventually the possibility that the morphology of ἀντί and ὑπέρ explains why they cannot be used in a tmesis. This study of the syntax of the tmesis will allow for a better understanding not only of the use of prepositions-preverbs in the Homeric language, but also of the verbal construction in Homeric language and of the Homeric sentence itself

Full textDislocation is described as an emphasis process, obtained by separating and repeating as a pronoun an essential component of the sentence. Though it is now acknowledged as a typical feature of oral and colloquial language, dislocation belongs to the most ancient heritage of our literature. The practice and reception of dislocation mainly depend on the grammatical context caused by the redundancy phenomena from the XVIIth century onwards. Fluctuating between mistake and literary device, that structure will not be the subject of a syntactical analysis until the end of the XXth century. Dislocation seems impossible to reduce to a strictly formal description, as its identification mainly lies on intuition. That is the reason why our study intends to reconsider literary past of dislocation, to recount its history, a history wich is in touch with the evolution of the language, the development of grammatical reflection, but also with the building of the linguistic feeling

Full textThe aim of this study is to show how, in deep structure operations, word order in Korean takes on an important metalinguistic dimension, affecting the way the speakers see the world. Guillaume's psycho-mechanical theory, insofar as it does not cut off the speech act from the speaker and the context of communication is particularly well-equipped to examine this question. The study starts with the identification of the immediate constituents of the simple sentence in Korean (semasiological approach). Next, with a view to highlighting the morpho-syntactical and semantic organization of the language, the variations in meaning obtained by the different internal ordering of each functional constituent unit is examined at word level, at phrase level and at sentence level. To what extent is the speaker free to choose the order in which he arranges the elements of the sentence he instantiates in the speech act? These are just some of the questions that this study tries to answer. This study comprises four parts. The first examines the structure of Korean sentence: from the sentence to the phrase. The second focuses on the disposition of sentence constituents. The third part investigates the order of the constituents within the noun phrase, comparing relative positions of the determinant in the phrase. This relates to the rules governing the combination of lexical words and grammatical words; this sheds light on the internal syntax of each functional constituent of the utterance. Finally, the last part is devoted to syntax of the adverb, based on its mobility and the way that position affects adverbial incidence

Full textAmid the variety of francophone literatures and Vietnamese literatures, Vietnamese francophone literature – always in quest for its identity – appears the best, as it becomes the sharing spot for ideologies, thought attitudes of mind, then it allows inmost feelings to pour out as well as noble longings for human contacts and personal or national pride. But first of all, the Vietnamese francophone literature promotes the spreading of French, the very tongue Vietnamese authors adopt as the best language to show their literary creativity. Examining the order of words throughout seven novels of three writers: Cung Giu Nguyen, Pham Duy Khiem and Pham Van Ky, allows us to explore closely the connection between literary creativity and the structure of French language. To be more precise, the purpose of this essay is to examine the implementation of the “grammatical norm” constrained and compelled by the rules of the language, and to emphasize the particular structures stand out, as they result from the stylistic choice of the novelists. From that basic approach we want to enlarge our investigations to the field of textual linguistics or grammar of text, as well as the field of prose poetics. This questioning is mainly corroborated by the close examination of the position of three principal components: subject, complements and adverbs, and by the taking into account of their positional function in the textual and literary production

Full textThis dissertation aims at proposing the formal analysis of the linguistic phenomena, such as the case system, the double case, the flexible word order, the coordination, the subordination and the thematisation, in the two structurally distinct languages: Korean and French. The formalism of Applicative Combinatory Categorial Grammar, developed by Jean-Pierre Desclés and Ismail Biskri, allow us to analyze these problems by means of the combinators of the Combinatory Logic of Curry and the functional calculus of the Church's types. By taking account of these formal analysis applied to Korean and to French, we discuss on the « anti-anti relativist » hypothesis by finding some syntactic invariants from the different operations such as the predication, the determination, the quantification, the transposition and the coordination. We propose also a categorial parser, ACCG, applicable to Korean and French sentences, which generates automatically categorial calculus and the operator-operand structures

Full textThis thesis proposes a quantitative study of word order variations in Persian, focusing on the relative order between the direct object (DO) and the indirect object (IO). The latter plays a crucial role in the theoretical analyses of the VP, which in the absence of quantitative studies lack solid empirical underpinning. My first goal is to contribute to the study of Persian syntax by providing reliable data in order to evaluate the prevailing hypothesis according to which there exists a dual canonical relative order between the two objects triggered by the Differential Object marking (DOM). My second goal is to contribute to the ongoing debates on word order preferences in general linguistics and typology by bringing in data on an SOV language with mixed head-direction. To this end, I study the effect of factors such as grammatical weight (or relative length), which are claimed to influence the linear order across languages. First, the results of our corpus and experimental studies show that the DOM account of the relative order between the DO and the IO is flawed. Based on this conclusion, I also reject the two object positions hypothesis and plead for a flat structure view of the VP. Second, our data reveal a “long-before-short” preference, which is shown to depend on the effect of salience-enhancing factors such as definiteness, animacy and the grammatical role. I argue that while this preference is, either totally or partially, incompatible with the predictions of processing-oriented dependency-based models, it can be accounted for by production models assuming that the greater conceptual accessibility of longer constituents favors their early position in SOV languages

Full textThe study investigates the history of the word-class of participle through a close study of a corpus of French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian grammars which were published between the 15th and 18th centuries. The comparative approach is based on the methodological principle of “series of texts”, by grouping and collating a hundred works according to several variable parameters: the chronology, the theme or the grammatical tradition of the language in question. The first part of the study deals with the linguistic categorization and questions the nature of the non-finite verbal forms, especially the participle and its use in an analytical verbal form. The second part deals with the history of the participle from a more general point of view. Thus, after an overview of the problematic aspects of Greek and Latin grammarians, the analysis focuses on the treatment of the word-class in the grammars of the Romance languages. The third part focuses on the approaches and concepts used by the Renaissance grammarians to deal with compound tenses and on how they described and (re)-categorized the participle forms of these verbal tenses
