Full textThis PHD dissertation specifically examines the determiner without nominal rection in contemporary Spanish. It contains three parts in which the occurrences of nounless nominal groups are studied. We first compare Spanish to four other languages (French, Italian, Portuguese and English) to show that Spanish can express certain things in a way the other four languages cannot. Then, we focus on Spanish itself and determine four kinds of grammatical categories that can be preceded with the definite article. Our main goal is to understand how a nounless nominal group can emerge with a nominal value, with non-nominal categories replacing the noun. We aim at finding what element gives the nominal value to those nominal groups and at testing what roles the article plays in the nominalization of those elements. Such a work first consists in detecting the cases of ellipses and the cases where the article has a pronominal value, so that those cases are eliminated from the scope of this study. The second part studies the grammatical categories introduced by the article (adjective, infinitive, subordinate clause and prepositional phrase). Restrictions are detected by tests opposing utterances to one another. It is shown that the determiner does not give any nominal feature to the construction and that syntax mainly depends on semantic criteria. We explain the utterance classes, their grammaticality and ungrammaticality through obligatory semantic features. The third part proposes to insert the hypothesis under DP hypothesis (Determinant Phrase) and we propose a [class] feature under D head, which enables to give a nominal value to the sentence with the help of a grammatical category bearing specific semantic features

Full textNominals in Chinese show several interesting phenomena that fascinate linguists working on the generative grammar. Among these characteristics, die use of individual classifiers and the DE element are especially important. These questions have been discussed in existing literature, but one can hardly find studies which cover the whole range of phenomena in question in order to propose a coherent solution in formai syntax. This dissertation intends to carry out such a research, by paying a special attention to the numeral construction and the role of die DE element in the XP-DE-YP construction among other issues. This dissertation is grounded within the generative grammar framework. More specifically, die phenomena will be studied in the "linearization" perspective in Kayne (1994)'s sense, fundamental work that considers the relation between linear order and syntactical hierarchy. The research is organized as follows: die Chapter I is dedicated to a complete presentation of different linearization theories and their evolutionary path. This part will not put emphasis on 'Chinese data in order to keep a more general and theoretical background; die Chapter II is concerned about die numeral construction, the main tasks are to find an appropriate syntactical representation of the construction and to account for phenomena that are semantics-related such as the distinction of count and massif nouns and the interpretation of singular and plural; die Chapter III will focus on the DE element and the three following structures- complementary propositions, deverbals and relatives; the Chapter IV will investigate die syntax of non-nominal syntactical categories in Chinese in order to complete the studies in the Chapters II and III. Some conclusions regarding the linearization previously obtained will also be reconsidered more profoundly within die Minimalist Program framework

Full textDid the Germanic languages fix the position of the adjective epithet before the substantive, did Albanian place it behind, then why French he would not make it ? This position in French being always variable, soon before and soon behind the substantive (of course, it is not valid for all), small problem pose to the French and to the French-speaking strangers. It is for it that we undertook such a research that is especially important that she/it also touches Albanian. From there, it comes out again that the comparative method is the one that predominated our research. A small preview on the source of these two languages appeared us indispensable. We also had need to really know the used terminology. The discovery of the ways of adjectives epithets, used to try to find the reasons of the positions different of this adjective in French as well as the concordances of Albanian on that point. These adjectives can be of the relational, of colour, of shape, of nominal or verbal origin ; they can be also monosyllabic or polysyllabic. Following their adherence in these divisions, their sometimes offer different senses in relation to the position that they occupy by the substantive. It appears us that the adverb also has a some role to play. Most adjectives epithets always have a fuzzy position in French, what makes that the anteposition and the postposition are always present, with a predominance rather important of the second. It doesn't prevent to have some adjectives epithets with a stationary place close to a substantive, either before, either behind ; coordinated juxtaposed either. All it made that this question has been called by specialists all domains, especially by the linguists. This problem has been landed of different sides. Of the linguists, of the old centuries, rather made it of a point of view unscientific, of others, more recent, from a structuralist or semantic view point, as well as from a stylistic and pragmatic view point. Does an acceptable solution exist then, to this phenomenon ? For us only one rule of after which we could choose the position of the adjective epithet in French doesn't exist. On the other hand, there are several choices. It is in relation to what we want to say, and in relation to the means that we use to say it, that these choices intervene in turns

Full textThe article in French constitutes one of the most important sources for learners of French as a foreign language. Regarded as a meaningless morpheme transmitting only few information, the article is often treated slightly in traditional and school grammar, but actually it represents considerable values in terms of "semantics" and "referential". The use of the French article was the subject of many researches (the work of Guillaume on the question is the most famous trace). Based on syntactic and semantic approaches, more "traditional", we propose a new approach - "semantico-referential" - which makes it possible to better account for the operation of the French article, in particular, for the operation of the article in a noun phrase : "N1 + de + N2"
