Full textThis study aims to provide some answers to three basic questions concerning light verb structures: its identification, delimitation of other combinations that share the same surface structure and a review of its classical definition. Once identified and defined the object of our study, we adopt the linguistic theory of employ (G. Gross 2012), which allows us to approach light verbs from two perspectives: the contrastive study of French-Spanish light verbs and its translation

Full textAs we approach the second millennium the second millennium the Castilian version of Spanish has two imperfect subjunctive forms: - ra and -se. Two main works have been accomplished in our research project: bibliographic research: in order to provide a basis for my theoretical framework, the research of all linguistic schools of "the - ra and - se question" has been thoroughly examined. I have also taken into account both the approaches and the conclusions of research projects that have been conducted this century. Research concerning the corpus: I compiled a base line corpus (24797 pages) with extracts covering the last fifty years - including such diverse fields as narration, theatre and cinema. Following the comparative analysis of diverse examples according to a wide range of criteria, I often came across contextual or cotextual features which seem to suggest the use of either - ra or -se as a result of my analysis, the continuing existence of two imperfect subjunctive forms in contemporary Spanish appears to be justified by the fact that they express two distinct degrees of disengagement

Full textThe Spanish grammatical tradition affirms that the Spanish gerund has a lot of meanings. From a syntactic point of view, it is usually compared with the adverb or the adjective. Moreover, it is said to be able to signify all circumstantial values. Lastly, its temporal signification can be anteriority or simultaneity, but also - with some restrictions - posteriority. A critical study of articles on the Spanish gerund shows how important are normative prescriptions and reveals frequent confusions between the sphere of signification and the sphere of reference. The examination - according to Guillaume's theory - of examples extracted from newspapers and contemporary novels confirms that traditional opinions give the gerund meanings that it has not. In fact, the Spanish gerund does say none of these values. All the situations that can be identified in speech (anterior, simultaneous or posterior event, with or without identified agent) belong to the sphere of reference. Gerund does not signify them; it is only compatible with them. In other words, the relation between the signified of gerund and all the nuances of speech is a relation of compatibility and not of causality. These different meanings are the result of the interaction between many elements (signified of each component of utterance, context, pragmatic and encyclopedic knowledge of the interlocutor, etc. ) Finally, we could say that gerund gives the representation of a naked event, out of any circumstances (the identity of support is unknown and there is no temporal localization). For this, it is particularly qualified to refer to the most various situations

Full textA descriptive phase precedes the automatic treatment of language. The present study is an observation of predicates of event in Spanish. The syntactic and semantic behaviours were examined to end with the setting of subclasses of predicates. These classes get organized according to the type of support verb selected by the predicate or according to an appropriate operator (nominal, verbal or adjective operator). In Spanish and French there are created events, fortuitous events, events with double prospect an cyclic events. The four subclasses were observed then refined according to the same criteria. These descriptions are completed by the analysis of the support aspect verbs and by the study of intrinsic aspect of the predicate noun to specify again the syntactic and semantic characteristics of each subclass of predicates of events in Spanish

Full textThis work deals with a syntactic problem called " prepositional accusative ", a particularity of some Romance languages where the object complement can be preceded by the preposition a. The first part, after emphasizing the shortcomings of existing studies, introduces the theoretical framework of this study, the method, the tools and the postulates adopted, the main one being about the object's status : within the transitive structure, the function of the object is secondary to the function of the subject. The second part aims at establishing a hierarchy of the factors of prepositioning. For Spanish, we make the assumption, opposed to the traditional approach, that the verb is a fundamental factor ; it is its semantism which, alone or combined with the factors of the object's semantism, the syntax and the co-text, favors prepositioning by giving the object an unusual status, similar to that of the subject. Semantic classes of verbs with the same behaviour with respect to a can then be set up. The third part goes back to the significance of this phenomenon in tong. The signified of a on which we base this work, seems particularly fit for the effect described : by splitting the predicative space created by a transitive verb, the preposition a opens a second predication in which the object's function is the support, in accordance with the status which has been conferred to it by the highlighted factors. Is such an object complement, heightened, having become the equal of the subject, an " accusative " or a " dative "? This is the final issue debated in this work, through a general analysis of the system of transitivity

Full textA new approach for the teaching of the Spanish preterit and imperfect berb forms is proposed. The difference between these tenses is based on the aspectual perfectif - imperfectif oposition. Images are used to introduce the notion of 'aspect' to the students. An application program named vipi has been developed for this purpose. In order to verify its methodological value an experience has been carried out where three groups have followed different teaching approaches - vipi. Traditional method, pifu- and have afterwards been tested to measure the existing differences in acquisition levels. The statistical analysis of the results confirms that the pedagogical value of vipi is superior to the traditional methods

Full textThe study investigates the history of the word-class of participle through a close study of a corpus of French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian grammars which were published between the 15th and 18th centuries. The comparative approach is based on the methodological principle of “series of texts”, by grouping and collating a hundred works according to several variable parameters: the chronology, the theme or the grammatical tradition of the language in question. The first part of the study deals with the linguistic categorization and questions the nature of the non-finite verbal forms, especially the participle and its use in an analytical verbal form. The second part deals with the history of the participle from a more general point of view. Thus, after an overview of the problematic aspects of Greek and Latin grammarians, the analysis focuses on the treatment of the word-class in the grammars of the Romance languages. The third part focuses on the approaches and concepts used by the Renaissance grammarians to deal with compound tenses and on how they described and (re)-categorized the participle forms of these verbal tenses

Full textThe verbal system of historical Basque has been the object of big changes. Indeed, since its first long texts (15th and 16th centuries) until our days, it was modified at the level of tense, aspect, mood and valency. However, in spite of the works of Lafon (1943), Zulaika (1999) and Aldai (2002), our knowledge of the various synchronies of the verbal system, but also its diachronic evolution remains imperfect. The aims of this dissertation are (i) to supply precise descriptions of Basque’s verbal system in the 15th, 16th centuries, and in the first half of the 18th century, (ii) to study the evolutions it was the object between these two periods, (iii) to suggest a relative chronology of the forms of the system, and (iv) to open tracks for the reconstruction of the prehistorical verbal system. The systematic study of texts allowed us to raise two precise descriptions of these various synchronies. These reveal two very different verbal systems. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Basque’s verb is in full transformation, with numerous forms in competition and others taking on more than a function. In the first half of the 18th century, it is much more homogeneous, as many modifications accomplished. The comparison of the data of the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries reveals that in three centuries the verbal system of the Basque was profoundly modified. Indeed, we witness the reorganization of tense, aspect and mood as a consequence of the creation of new periphrastic constructions, and the disappearance, or the functional evolution of ancient forms. Besides, we observe changes at the level of valency

Full textThis empirical and synchronic study focuses on the actual uses of Spanish copulas ser and estar in predicative constructions in Mexican Spanish. The constructions studied here are those which admit both copulas. These constructions have been traditionally distinguished following Carlson’s (1977) Individual-level Predicates and Stage-level Predicates. Nevertheless, we have noticed that some of the occurrences of estar in Mexican Spanish cannot be explained by the Carlsonian distinction. This copula seems to be undergoing an extension process in some of the varieties of Latin American Spanish. Authors have studied Spanish copulas from different approaches and perspectives. To better understand the complexity of the matter, we have established a critical history of this issue. Then, following a discovery process based mostly on our native speaker’s intuition, we analyze the question applying a comparative experimental task between Mexican Spanish and European Spanish speakers, which shows important internal variations among Mexican native speakers. Finally, we propose a multifactorial analysis of our “natural”, i.e. spontaneous, written and oral corpora from different sources, which allows us to compare different patterns, and to identify which ones are significant for choosing estar. To conclude, the various potential semantic values entailed by copula choice are analyzed

Full textThis study focuses on the periphrastic form había- + do/-to/-cho that the grammatical tradition identifies as the ‘pluperfect (past perfect) indicative’ in contemporary Spanish. After reviewing the different approaches to this verbal form, we provide a unique signified for this form that is able to subsume all its discursive manifestations. For this purpose, we adopt the theoretical principles of the ‘Linguistics of the signifier’, which postulates the unity of the linguistic sign – i.e. a signifier corresponds to a single signified, and vice versa – and gives priority to the semiological structure of the signifier. This approach leads us to reexamine había- + do/-to/-cho within the signifying networks of Spanish, and to reconsider the modal structure of the verbal system. Finally, we describe the discursive syntactic behaviour of the Spanish pluperfect, in the development of narrative sequences, but also in certain Latin American diatopic occurrences (contact Spanish / Guarani in particular) since they are ‘borderline case’ among the pluperfect discursive occurrences

Full textIn this thesis, the study of the Copulus verbs Ser and Estar is approached from two complementary points of view. On the one hand, a grammatical analysis of a large corpus of authentic oral occurrences is carried out in order to evaluate the relevance of certain theoretical tools belonging to a cognitive approach to the question. On the other hand, from a second language teaching context, experimental research is conducted to examine the influence that the type of grammatical approach used in teaching can have on learners' outcomes. In both cases, priority is given to the empirical validation of working hypotheses according to methodologies belonging, in one case, to linguistics and, in another case, to language didactics. In this way, it was possible to identify the field of specialization of each of the disciplines in terms of the description of the above-mentioned copulas, as well as the points of convergence between the fields of study concerned
