Full text--- This research aims to reduce absorbed dose of patients in clinical examinations using diagnostic X-ray, based on the results of the evaluation of each parameters that modify the X-ray spectrum. This study analyzes how to modify the X-ray spectrum with the variation of the following factors: tube potential (kVp), filtration and current multiplied by time (mAs). First, we determine the discrete and continuous X-ray spectrum using a computer simulation, this program that we use to calculate X-ray intensity is founded on the theory of Birch and Marshall. Moreover, from input data as values of tube potential, filtration, tube current, anode angle and a factor for energy, also with the program response (average energy and photon fluence), we analyze kerma reduction in the proposed techniques. We managed to reduce absorbed dose or kerma until 56,69 % in radiographic examinations. Besides this, we are studying the feasibility of implementing alternatively the use of tantalum filters in order to reduce absorbed dose of patients. The advantage of this methodology is that it is possible to optimize as well as implement new radiological techniques, which significantly reduce the absorbed dose. Therefore, guaranteeing the quality and safety in X-ray diagnostic procedures.

SEM analyses and x-ray spectra were used to identify sites of Al accumulation in leaves. Chrome azurol S was demonstrated to be a sharper and more contrasting Al-specific dye in relation to hematoxylin. We confirmed that the main sites for Al accumulation are cell walls of non-lignified leaf tissues of Al-accumulating plants. In these plants, we also observed Al-constitutive granules confined in cavities formed in the cortical parenchyma. The anatomical description of Al accumulation in leaves and the consistent pattern of Al association with cell walls strongly suggest structural rather than physiological roles of Al in leaves of Cerrado woody plants

Full textThe maintenance of dose levels below the limits required by national and international standards are essential in all applications of ionizing radiation. The dose constrains levels in Brazil are established in terms of the quantity ambient dose equivalent, H*(10), while the radiation levels in radiometric surveys are calculated by means of measurements with ion chambers using the quantity air-kerma converted to ambient dose equivalent by a constant factor. The present work aims the experimental study of the relationship between the air kerma and the operational quantity ambient dose equivalent, by measuring X-ray beams transmitted through materials used in dedicated chest radiographic facility. An experimental methodology, based on spectroscopic techniques was developed for the X-ray spectra measurements. With the results, estimates of ambient dose equivalent quantity through conversion factors between this quantity and the air-kerma, become more realistic by taking into account the spectral changes resulting from the attenuation of primary beams by anthropomorphic phantoms and different attenuating materials. The maximum difference founded between these coefficients and the one adopted in Brazil by ANVISA (1.14 Sv I Gy) was 53.52%, which indicates underestimation of the value. The spectral behavior of the X-ray beam transmitted by primary barriers and attenuators present in radiological procedures presented influences on results related to radiometric surveys and procedure calculations barriers.

The project aims to study the disturbances (responses) of the low solar atmosphere caused by solar flares, using Hα, 30 THz (10 μm), UV/EUV, soft and hard X-rays observations, and a wide range of radio waves emissions (microwaves, millimeter, sub-millimeter). This set of multispectral data enabled us to (i) examine in detail various aspects of the phenomena, (ii) determine the origin of the radio emission during the gradual phase, and therefore (iii) understand the mechanism of the particles acceleration. The data we used for the completion of this study are based on Hα and 30 THz (10 μm) observations, made by the high cadence flare imaging system installed at OSM4 and CASLEO5 observatories, additionally data from HASTA (H-Alpha Solar Telescope for Argentina) telescope installed at OAFA6 observatory. In the sub-millimeter and millimeter domain at 212, 405 GHz and 45, 90 GHz, were from SST (Solar Sub-millimeter Telescope) and from POEMAS (POlarization Emission of Millimeter Activity at the Sun) solar radio telescopes, respectively. Complementary radio observations in the microwave range (0.2-15 GHz) from RSTN (Radio Solar Telescope Network) were considered. In addition, solar observations obtained by RHESSI (Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager), Fermi and GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) satellites in X-ray channels, and from AIA (Atmospheric Imaging Assembly) and HMI (Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager) instruments, onboard the SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) satellite, respectively.

Full textA complete characterization of a diagnostic X-ray beam is based on the measurement of its fluency spectrum. The fluency spectrum can be measured directly using spectroscopic methods, however, require specialized equipment and is not easily performed in a clinical environment. In this work a methodology was implemented that allows to obtain the X-ray spectrum in an indirect way. This methodology is based on the application of a mathematical model that uses an inverse Laplace transform of the beam attenuation curve, generating data on a spectral distribution of this beam. The attenuation curves are measured by means of an ionization chamber and high purity aluminum filters. The reconstructed spectra were validated by means of the comparison of energy fluency calculated from them and an energy fluence calculated from the experimentally obtained attenuation curves. As an application, some characteristic beam data were also calculated, such as first and second half-value layers, mean energy, 10th percentile and kerma factor. The energy fluency calculated from the reconstructed spectra and the energy fluence calculated from the experimentally obtained attenuation curves showed good agreement, validating the reconstructed spectra and showing the value of the attenuation curve analysis in comparison with one spectroscopic methods attenuation data can be obtained with comparative ease. The characteristic beam data calculated from the spectra obtained in this work presented satisfactory results, as expected, since it is a regularization process for a spectral distribution
