This essay examines how Japanese Esperantism developed after the Russo-Japanese War in a manner that departed from the global Esperanto movement. Esperantists viewed Esperanto as a language that amplified the diversity of and symbolized equality between cultures. Esperanto was studied and discussed by elites and nonelites alike in noninstitutional spaces such as in rural homes and coffee shops, often at night, when institutions privileged by state and financial power had closed. By looking at these hidden space-times outside the realms of state guidance, we become privy to an imagination and p

The case of the Bulgarian Esperanto movement under state socialism demonstrates a social movement can survive under authoritarianism by establishing a legitimate activist culture acceptable to the regime while pursuing its intrinsic goals. Bulgaria, a close Soviet ally, was a difficult case of movement survival. In the early years following World War II, the national Esperanto periodical Bulgara Esperantisto was a key organizing tool for the movement reporting on its activities, reaching out to potential recruits, and legitimizing the movement under the new communist-led regime. This article examines how Esperanto coalesced with leftist and anticolonial thinking in East Asia during the 1930s and early 1940s. It aims to complicate understandings of language, including planned languages, as a neutral and apolitical medium and to contribute to a growing body of Anglophone scholarly work on Esperanto by turning to the history of East Asian Esperantists. Examining the linguistic theories by Esperantist and Latinization activist Ye Laishi (Ĵelezo, 1911–1994) and the Esperanto writings of Hong Hyŏng-ui (1911–1968) and An U-saeng (1907–1991), the article argues that Esperanto

In 1933–34, Kurisu received a coded warning from a Soviet citizen (a veteran Communist and Esperantist) against Stalin’s terror regime. Kurisu put this experience aside for a long time. Abstract This paper explores how Esperanto (Esperantists) plays an important role in Chinese language reform during 1911–1958. It divides the period into three stages and describes Esperantists’ activities from three perspectives accordingly: roles, goals/results and motives. The paper reveals Esperantists’ roles have transformed from “people with influence” to “people with expertise” and then “people with power.” From the perspective of goals/results, the first stage failed because it didn’t achieve the goals as expected while the second and third stages were successful. Organizado inicialmente nos centros urbanos de Lisboa e Porto, os primeiros cultores do Esperanto tinham origem numa pequena burguesia progressista, orientados por interesses comerciais, cosmopolitas e pacifistas.
