Constantinesco, Thomas. "Ralph Waldo Emerson : l'Amérique à l'essai - lectures de l'oeuvre en prose." Paris 7, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA070049.
Full textUpon his death in 1882, Ralph Waldo Emerson had already become a literary monument and was recognized as a founding figure of American culture. Published in 1837, "The American Scholar" is indeed hailed by many to be America's "intellectual Declaration of Independence. " However, if the "Belles Lettres" did contribute to creating the representation of a common imaginary whereby the American nation could invent itself and if, in the course of the nineteenth century, America wrote itself into existence, such an enterprise remained largely the province of fiction. Yet Emerson was always suspicious of fiction, which for him rhymed with illusion, choosing instead to write non-fictional prose, and more particularly essays. Contrary to some of his contemporaries who turned tales, romances, and novels into indigenous genres, free at last from the shackles of European Letters, Emerson turned towards the genre of the essay and made it one of America's privileged forms of literary expression. This thesis thus offers to read Emerson's essays as so many ways of approaching what "Experience" describes as "this new yet unapproachable America," considering them as the locus where the American democracy repeatedly writes and rewrites its social compact and continuously reinvents itself. By the same token however, and despite Emerson's aversion for fictional forms, the essays yield to the desire for fiction that haunts them in secret and become what he called "romances of character," fashioning the character of America's representative men even as the letters, the characters, take shape on the page

Full textOutside Russia, it goes without saying that Stanislavski's influence in the USA, the father of the art of modern acting, has been the most important of all. Because of its intensity, its impact, its longevity as well as its capacity for overcoming a large number of obstacles ( political, linguistic and cultural), Stanislavski ' relationship to the American theatre certainly appears as an astonishing and fascinating phenomenon. However, there have been few studies about this influence taking into consideration altogether the Russian heritage and the impact of the system on the American actor, in line with the historical, aesthetic and perhaps even the anthropological perspective. This research aims at defining the processes of reception, transmission and the means of assimilation of the system in the USA. Has this adventure brought about the preservation and enrichment of the Russian heritage or, has it, on the contrary, marginalized it, distorted it or, perhaps even betrayed it? We also need to understand whether this transmission has served the American theatre and has allowed it to evolve or has harmed it by causing a true aesthetic and identity crisis which has led to the breaking-up of the American theatrical milieu into a variety of denominations, each one advocating its own interpretation of the system as it appears in the latest works in the field most of which are essentially North-American

Full textThis dissertation examines the various figures of the American novelist which takes form in the famous literary interviews published by The Paris Review during the first two decades of its existence (1953-1973). In order to analyze the specificities and the impact of the new model of literary interview created by the inspired, yet inexperienced editors and interviewers of the review, this dissertation first traces the history of "little magazines" as well as the context in which the Paris Review interviews were shaped and polished, and then analyzes the complex history of the literary interview as a genre. Through the study of the archives of the review, the author casts a light on the collaboration between the editorial board and the interviewed novelists during the demanding rewriting process of the literary interviews. The literary interview thus appears as a space where negotiations take place, opposing the preconceptions of the interviewer to the various strategies displayed by the novelist in order to assert his legitimacy. What was originally designed as a single portrait composed by two instances actually turns into the novelist's controlled self-portrait.Ultimately The Paris Review literary interview becomes a form of biographical fiction, in which the writer, initally questioned on "the art of fiction", leaves center stage to the author, who takes great care of his own public persona

Full textThis dissertation presents a comparative study of the French and Spanish seventeenth century hagiographic drama. The first part is devoted to the theoretical problems raised by the two genres : a study of the generic terminologies, of the places where the plays were staged, and of the way their contemporaries (theorists and playwrights) considered them thus allows us to draw the outline of an essentially hybrid theatre. Indeed, in the two countries, it seems contradictory to associate a saint's life and a theatrical form. The second part presents a dramatic analysis of the plays. We show how the authors managed to integrate the figure of the saint in a real dramatic plot despite his passionless nature. The structures of the dramas rely on a conflict between the saint and his circle, on a conversion of the hero himself, or on a series of adventures through which the saint becomes an epic hero. This part reveals that the theatrical forms created by the French and the Spanish authors are less divergent than the traditional opposition between Spanish and French aesthetics of this period suggests. Finally, the third part deals with the spectacle of saintliness. We study how the playwrights succeeded in transforming the inward and unspectacular character of the saint into a living spectacle before the other characters' eyes. Being a perfect character, this specific hero cannot arouse the fear and pity Aristotle described and generates instead works in which admiration is the prominent aesthetic effect. These works thus rely on specific poetics which this dissertation attempts to define

Full textShakespeare presented madness as a necessary step towards awareness. This analysis was representative of a period during which the weight of institutions allowed only the king's fools or the artists to express themselves freely. In the twentieth century, we can witness a shift of interest. From 1960 to 1990, British and American playwrights were more interested in the treatment of madness, than in madness itself. The general dynamic of their plays is one of denunciation, thanks to a comical vein or to a scathing satire. Dramatists have actually exploited psychiatric issues to incriminate totalitarian powers

Full textReflexive writing at schoool : views, writing manners , text movements. At school, a French essay can offer the opportunity to reflect on school events. The essays analysed in this survey have been written by students preparing a Brevet d'Etudes Profesionnelles (Exam taken after a two-year vocational course following secondary-school). The students were assigned to give an account of a class debate then to speak their mind on one of the points debated. The paper presents a reflection on the notion of point of view, along with an analysis of the diversity of views illustrated by speaking manners. Such an approach allowed me to focus on some not only on the strains between the narrative and the augmentative linked to the complexity of the essay, but also on the notional strains thet may come up both in debate accounts and in the way personal views are expredded. This paper also gets into the position the student holds in his text
