Abstract:
Constructed-response items are commonly used in educational and psychological testing, and the answers to those items are typically scored by human raters. In the current rater monitoring processes, validity scoring is used to ensure that the scores assigned by raters do not deviate severely from the standards of rating quality. In this article, an adaptive rater monitoring approach that may potentially improve the efficiency of current rater monitoring practice is proposed. Based on the Rasch partial credit model and known development in multidimensional computerized adaptive testing, two ess

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how, over three separate phases, George Gissing transformed his relatively unremarkable early short stories into the uniquely individualistic tales that elevated his work in the eighteen nineties to the front rank of realistic short fiction. Chapters one and two relate to Gissing's first venture into short fiction whilst living in America, which is notable for its accumulation of important themes that the author carried forward and repeatedly adapted to reappear in his later work. In order to establish its impact on subsequent work in terms of polit

Abstract:
This chapter explores the significance of the titles of essays and essay periodicals throughout the history of the genre. It argues that the essay has always played with titles. When Montaigne called his volume Essais, he was following a tradition of giving a volume of miscellaneous writings a modest, and yet richly expressive name which would gesture to the diversity of the writings found within, while implicitly indicating that no name could comprehend that diversity. This chapter follows this tradition from Montaigne through the eighteenth and nineteenth-century periodicals including the Sp

In her 1927 essay ‘Street-Haunting’, Virginia Woolf rambles across the history of the essay, realizing various metaphors which the essay has offered for itself. Abstract:
This essay aims at identifying the peculiarities of Alberto Spaini’s anthology, Novellieri tedeschi – published by Salvatore De Carlo in 1946 – in comparison with similar miscellaneous volumes published from 1912 to 1972 both in German and Italian. Starting from the paratexts, the essay analyzes Spaini’s choices of authors and themes in order to highlight the anthology’s criteria of inclusion or exclusion, which testify both the existence of a consolidated repertoire of German novellas and the editor’s decisional power.
