Full textThis doctoral dissertation explores the role that historical theatre played in the process of nation-building in Peru between the mid-nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. Local theatre’s dynamics mirrored the development of nation-building in this country. The period under study is of particular complexity in Peruvian history, and it allows us to understand the difficulties arising between the construction of the nation and the development of a Peruvian national identity. This research focuses on Lima, Peru’s capital city. It demonstrates that the historical dramas written in this period, even when not all of them were set on stage, sometimes conveyed a realistic image of the past whereas other times that representation was fictitious. These plays expressed the middle and/or upper classes’ national aspirations and ideals. Most play writers and the audiences that attended the plays belonged to the middle and/or upper classes and considered themselves as liberals. This dissertation also argues that Peruvian historical theatre only evolved in circumstances in which the local elites were filled by nationalist enthusiasm and optimism about Peru’s contemporary present and future

Full textThis work is a comparative study of the rise of political separatism in Western Europe at the end of 20th century from the perspective of the evolution of nation-states together with the development phases of stateless nations. More specifically, the work focuses on showing that phase C of the development of stateless nations coincides - according to Miroslav Hroch’s periodisation – with the post-modern epoch and is strongly marked by European integration as well by creation of political sub-national entities. In order to substantiate our hypothesis empirically, we resort to an analysis of internal and external resources of political separatism available during the post-modern epoch. The thesis considers the issues of separatist political organizations. Their political and ideological offer, as well as, their political and electoral strategies at infra-national, national, and supra-national levels. The research is based upon primary source material (such as ideological and electoral programs, interviews with separatist politicians), and upon official documents of the European parliament and Council of Europe

Full textThis comparative study will present and define a literary movement known as Magic Realism - situating it firsi with respect to other movements such as the fantastic, the marvelous, surrealism and postmodernism. An overview of its development during the 20th century in Europe, in Latin America and, finally in Canada, will allow us to bring out the various meanings that were attributed to the locution by the writers and critiques at various times and in different countries. We will show that its decline in Europe corresponded to its expansion on the New Continent where it represented, for the writers, more than a reaction against realism (mimesis), but the means to re-imagine and re-invent their word by an unusual use of the techniques of the fantastic rendered by a systematic manipulation of the dimensions of time and space and of the narrative voice in the narrative. Magic realism conveys the complete fusion of the real and the imaginary

Full textWhat does the situation of temporary workers teach us about social changes? Why do companies turn to temporary work (TW)? What part do the temporary employment agencies play in this evolution? How do the temporary workers react to their situation ? The answer to these questions are drawn on statistical and biographical data as well as on an investigation and many interviews, in particular with temporary workers and employees from these agencies allowing us to establish links between private carreers and the evolution of the work system. The boom of TW is a symbol of a growing tendency for flexible and casualized labour. These changes in the job system are connected in a systemic way to the mutations of the productive system, the variation of the standards of integration and the evolution of the system of values. The TW illustrates the contradictions and the tensions within the employment system which generate a latent social crisis challenging the future of the current social change
Sadat, shafai Yal alexandre. "Les justiciers du "vigilante movie" : essor et origines d'une figure postmoderne." Thesis, Normandie, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018NORMC027.
Full textWithin the nineteen-seventies, a Hollywoodian genre focusing on the vigilante archetype, wandering throughout urban or rural modernity in order to eradicate crime instead of legal institutions, came back in the public eye. Called "vigilante movie" by critics in the nineteen-seventies, this genre arose commercially within a period that we situate between 1968 and 1989. Since most works are, according to us, aware of the paradoxes and bewilderments of their characters, we try to analyze the critical view expressed by authors on vigilante justice - that is, a view often neglected by texts written against these movies, perceived as conservative glorifications of the most radical reactions to criminality. Therefore, we propose a collection of common aesthetic processes that define the pessimistic aspect of these action films. As we are about to see, filmmakers and screenwriters from major studios and exploitation channels have understood that the vigilante in itself is the ideal tool for the embodiment of America, its origins, its aspirations, its evolution, its dreams of liberty and independence

Moulinier, Henri. "Essor et déclin de la pêche industrielle à La Rochelle (1871-1994)." Thesis, La Rochelle, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014LAROF001/document.
Full textSituated in the heart of the bay of Biscay, La Rochelle, right from its foundation, at the beginning of the XIIth century, was a community of fishermen. It then became one of the most dynamic cities in western France. In 1890 the commercial port moved to a new site, liberating the old port in the city centre for fishing activities. Many sailing ships came to sell their fish on an attractive fish market boosted by the railway connection to the inland part of the country in 1857. A new era started with industrial trawling, a major innovation in Great Britain. In 1871, the English shipowner Craggs tried to introduce steam-powered trawling but suffered a setback . However from 1904 to 1920 important armaments in industrial trawling were created, making La Rochelle, in this early period of expansion, the second fishing port in France and the first one on the Atlantic coast. After the stagnation of French fisheries and a crisis of Rochelais steam-powered trawlers, a new expansion of the port occured after WWII. In the sixties, La Rochelle became the 4th fishing port in France, until in 1965 a break in industrial fishing activities resulted in the loss of the last big trawlers in 1994. There have been numerous documents about other fishing ports in France. This study aims to concentrate on the history of industrial fishing in the port of La Rochelle over a century, highlighting its economic, sociological, political and ecological dimensions. For this purpose a comparative study has been made, analysing the characteristics and the reasons of this expansion as well as the ones of a rapid and premature decline

Full textIn the mid-1990s the British cinema was thriving. The media was enthusiastic about the many successes both with the public and critics which the British cinema met, especially as it had been in a slump in the 80s. However, some were convinced that it was just a phase which would soon run out of steam as had already happened before. Actually, the history of British cinema shows a succession of crises and rebirths. It had a pool of talented artists, but, for these to be able to blossom and create a great variety of films, it could not do without money. A film cannot exist if there is no creativity. However, in order for the film to materialize and be seen by the public, it relies on big investment, both financial and human. It also depends on a complex system. The renaissance of the British cinema is therefore not due to one factor but studying the British film industry and its environment helps to explain this phenomenon. Examining how the relationship between government and film from the late 70s to the mid-2000s helps one to better understand the impact of some government policies on the cinema. The changes that took place in the three main sectors of the film industry – production, distribution and exhibition – are also among the essential factors which contributed to the new rise of the British cinema

Full textThe history of the eel fishery has been an activity emblematic of the evolving culture of the Kamouraska region and a source of identity for the region’s fishing population. The snake-like appearance of the eel and its mysterious life underwater made it a fish subject to multiple interpretations in the belief systems of several peoples. From its rise to its decline, the historical geography of the eel fishery is a medium for exploring the larger relationship of the peoples of Kamouraska with their environment. An integral part of the transhumance of First Nations peoples, it was equally an essential part of the fishing and agricultural subsistence activities of the French colonists of the region and became an economically important market activity in the 19th and 20th centuries.. The decline of the eel fishery in the 1970’s provides testimony to the long-term effects of environmental degradation of the St. Lawrence River. Full textThis thesis about the house at isenheim belonging to the order of st. Anthony is an attempt to appreciate its commitment concerning hospital affairs. A thorough study allowed to specify various methods of treatment used : the balsan of st. Anthony, discovered in a recipe of the 18th century, the holy wine, the amputations meticulously described by Hans Von Gersdorff, a surgean who worked for the hospital of st. Anthony at strasbourg at the beginning of the 16th century, in his book "feldbuch derwundarznei". Throughout the middle ages the fame of the hospital at Issenheim is attested several times. In the second part of the thesis the different types of income of the house have been examined. In the middle ages the collections were the most important part. The gifts, the tithes and the rents completed the income. With the reformation the principal sorts of income collections and gifts - faded away. This research also helps to complete our knowledge about the church for which the famous altar-piece of Mathias Grunewald was made. The results confirm those of A. Mischlewski about the order as a whole :the order of st. Anthony was a hospital order which till the 16th century and in some places even longer remained true to its principles : the care and support of the poor and the sick

Full textWe have constituted a corpus of 684 dits which were composed before 1340 (a total of more than 324. 000 verses). First, we tried to define a dit, putting it to external and internal tests. We analyzed then the transformation of the dit from its origins to 1340. A comparison of the dit with other literary genres such as "fabliau", "lai", "conte". . . Allowed us to define exactly the meaning of dit. Without constituting a particular literary genre, the dit corresponds with a "style of writing" which flowered in the XIIIth century. The dit appears as an extraordinary reflection of the medieval society and its sociological interest becomes evident when considering some notable characters of mark such as women, vilains and "clercs", and when looking at the different professions of the society. An analysis of the presentation of the actual events complete this thematic study. Authors of dits willingly cast a critical eye on the world surrounding them, but they are always careful to integrate god into their everyday life which then becomes justified and explained

Full textThe idea of nation is one of the most sensitive subjects of the history of the political philosophy. Having distinguished, among the political and social doctrines, the concentric doctrines from the transverse doctrines, and having classified the idea of nation among the first ones, we study the relationships which it maintains with seconds. Then, approaching the place of the idea of nation on the field of the only concentric doctrines, we observe that two traditional schools opposed in Europe for the 18th century, the “German” (or objective) school and the “French” (or subjective) school. The first one gets organized around the notions of people (Herder and Hegel), around ancestral territory (Barrès and Maurras) and of language (Fichte). The second participates of the theory of the contract (Rousseau and Renan), that came to complete the theories of the ethnicity (Barth and Connor) and the theses of the constructivist school (Gellner, Hobsbawm, Anderson, Smith). Behind this structuring opposition, which recovers in reality the opposition between determinism and electivity, is hiding a deeper affinity than it appears at first sight, on one hand, because several elements of the objective conception are presupposed in the subjective conception, and, on the other hand, because they have in common to oppose frontally to the couple Federalism/Multiculturalism. We have to then, having taken care of analyzing the intrinsic limits and the historic diseases, to discuss the conditions of its survival in a world which claims, by pursuing the cosmopolitan views of Kant, to make live the democracy by transcending borders forged by one thousand five hundred years of European history

Full textProblem:
Which of Thailand’s four main sectors that nation brands compete including tourism, FDI, export promotion, and talent attraction that should be develop a main focus in developing a stronger Nation Brand for the country comparing to other four countries in South East Asia including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines?
Purpose:
The purpose of this paper are 1) to study and analyze the current status of Thailand’s nation brand equity and 2) to examine the feasibility in each of Thailand’s four main sectors that nation brands compete including tourism, FDI, export promotion, and talent attraction by comparing to other four countries in ASEAN including Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia in order to generate recommendations for the country in developing a stronger nation branding strategy in the future.
Method:
In order to achieve our purpose, firstly, we chose ‘Asset-based Nation brand equity’ model to collect the information and perform analysis on the contribution of both nation internal and external assets towards nation brand equity. Secondly, ‘Nation brand internal analysis’ model was chosen in order to be a guideline for gathering data and performing analysis on Thailand’s nation brand capability in each of the 4 main sectors comparing to the other four countries. In addition, due to our research topic and limited time frame, we would rely on secondary sources as our main source of information with some guidance from our primary source. After the analysis had been performed, we had reached the conclusion and generated recommendation for our target group
Conclusion:
For the analysis of Nation brand equity, Thailand has equipped relatively strong internal assets both innate and nurtured as the country is rich with beautiful landscape and fascinating culture together with a strong support for the art from both governmental and private sectors. However, as for external assets, both disseminated and vicarious assets of Thailand still weakly contribute to the strength of the nation equity. Due to these reasons, we have recommended Thai governmental units to set up the organizations to improve the quality of disseminated asset and also start cooperation with private sector in order to come up with external portrayal in popular culture that can effective represent and enhance the country’s image.
As for the result of ‘Nation brand internal analysis’, Thailand has shown moderate to high capability in the Export Promotion sector which was the highest among the other 3 sectors. However, based on the data in the analysis part, there are still lots of things needed to be done both by Thai governmental units and private sector in order to boost the country’s nation brand capability to achieve competitive advantage in the international market in the long run. According to this point, we had listed some recommendations for the governmental units to use as a general guideline in obtaining a strong nation brand that could help the country become more competitive in the global market.

Eventually it is neither simply a land problem nor a heritage issue. Its being is evaluated as a conscious contribution for the cultural transformation of the Turkish nation. Therefore, its genesis is discussed in relation to the main definitions of culture in history: 1) cultivating nature with the idea of increasing the efficiency in products and lands
2) cultivation of minds in relation to the education of human beings
3) the process of social development
4) meanings, values, ways of life

Full textNorway and Switzerland are not member states of the EU, since the majority of the people rejected integration in several referenda. The emotionality and the enormous mobilisation in national debates on integration cannot sufficiently be explained by economic and political reasons, since the majority of the elites are supporting integration. Instead, the main resource of mobilisation for Eurosceptics lies in reactivating deeply rooted descriptions of national self and other. For carving out these collective images, this discourse-analysis compares how the major Eurosceptical actors of Switzerland, the “Action for an Independent and Neutral Switzerland” (AUNS) together with the tightly connected “Swiss People’s Party” (SVP), on one hand, and the Norwegian movement “No To EU” (NEI TIL EU), on the other hand, describe their actions as meaningful in their iconography and narrations. In doing so, the study refers to and interprets extensive material from Eurosceptical actors and contributes to the understanding of Eurosceptical self-perception, ways of thinking, rhetoric and virtue system. Here Eurosceptics perceive themselves mainly as defenders of the national community and its nation-state, which are regarded as warm, natural, close, justified, efficient, peaceful and democratic, while Europe is perceived as the cold, distant, bureaucratic superstate EU.

Full textWith regard to the french nation, aragon's works show a twoofold aspect: a systematic discredit on the one hand and an absolute song of praise on the other hand. Why? how? the world war i veteran first rejected nationalism which he always thought narrow, responsible for wars, meant to concedl the interests of the dominating class. Reading marx and barres more throughfly, aragon gradually realized what really makes up people and he then considered the land which they first see on the day they were born (natio). Moreover, the history of france is rich with the french revolution (1789), the commune and literary and pictorial traditions. By 1934, the writer was then philosophically ready to accept the french heritage as a whole and to praise it epically and lyrcally especially when the country was in danger (during world war ii, the americain hegemony which followed and the building of europe). He then used the heroes of legends and epinal printings from vercingetorix to joan d7arc, he drew his inspiration from michelet and peguy, he went back to classical versification, he participated in working out of communist national politics, he looked at the geography of france with love in the eyes. Finally he designed an original and eternal and wonderful france which is never so much itself as when it opens up to universality

Nevertheless, it was a fertile period of conceptual and methodological renewal in social science research that has resulted in institutional creations and the emergence of new fields of investigation. The survey provides an overview of the phenomenon of mass communications research and analyses the contribution of different actors in the legitimization of this scientific object in the French academic field after the Liberation to the recognition of ICS as discipline in the French academic bodies in the early 1970s. Based on the concepts of “field”, “network” and “configuration”, the survey examines this universe of knowledge production through the analysis of a selection of 253 texts published in the period 1945-1972 to identify the cognitive and institutional evolution of this scientific object. Considered in a constructivist perspective, the study relates to the field of the ICS history research

Full textAnchin is a late benedictine foundation (1079). After eremitic geginnings, the budding community becomes a abbey, granted a libertas designed to avoid lay rule. Following a leadership crisis in 1110-1111, the arrival of an authoritarian abbot concludes anchin's early days. The exploitation of two hitherto unpublished sources, the necrology and the customary, forms the core of this study. The necrology makes it possible to assess the importance of a community of whose numerical strengh evidence is found in a number of elements : an imposing architectural setting, an extensive network of altars and curtes, and three priories. The customary sheds a light on the internal organization. The interest of that manuscript justifies its inclusion in an appendix. Numerous monasteries ruled or reformed by anchin monks, and a large network of confraternities testify to the spiritual leadership exerted by the abbey. As any other monastery, anchin maintained relations with all ruling powers a large number of bulls bear testimony to its dealigns with the papacy. They make up a bullary presented in an appendix

Full textIn 1386, Philippe the Bold founded a Chamber of accounts in Lille, one of the main devices for the integration of the southern Low-Countries into the emerging Burgundian state. Faithful to the legacy of the Flanders and Artois administrations in its procedures, the newly created institution was also influenced by the Monarchy, a fact to which both its work methods and the origin of its officers bear witness. Within the frame of a bipolar princely state looking towards France, the institution was part of a network of Chambers (Paris, Dijon, Lille and soon Brussels) who exchanged data and competences. With more than 200 accounts to control every year, the institution was overwhelmed with work, but is was considered essentially by the Dukes of Burgundy for its ability to treat information obtained through a good network of correspondants and from accountancy and diplomatic archives. The Chamber managed, under John The Fearless especially, to broaden its field of action by increasing the domains of its competence and taking hold of strategic accounts like those of the royal receiver of aids or the ducal receiver of all finances. The Chamber also succeeded in establishing firm authority on land and currencies and acquired the status of a court of Justice recognized by Parliament. Sanctuary to the Dukes' authority, it was the voice of law enforcement but also celebrated the Prince's magnanimity. The Chamber, in its role as a counsel to the Prince and in sometimes managing his finances, arrived at the threshold of power ; it could never, however, fully control the financial administration
