Abstract:
Norbert Elias and John Scotson’s analysis of the interconnection between positive and negative community identities in The Established and the Outsiders is well-known. Elias’s subsequent writing about community offers a more rounded analysis, going beyond established/outsider configurations by exploring community’s gendered character and the forces involved in the ‘we–I balance’ that counteract the pervasive process of individualization. Elias’s use of personal pronouns to reveal how community identity (‘we’) relates not only to outsiders (‘they’) but also to an individual member (‘I’) of communities is central to his extended theory of community.

Abstract:
This paper adopts Elias’ theory of established and outsider relations (Elias and Scotson, 1994) to argue that women riders are “outsiders” within the racing figuration. The paper draws on data collected from eight semi-structured interviews with experienced female jockeys. It is suggested by the authors that female jockeys remain outsiders within the racing figuration in the UK. In particular, female jockeys are largely resigned to their inferior position as their views of male jockeys remain deeply ingrained in stereotypes about gender. The increasing organizational changes that have allowed women to be a part of the Jockey Club, be granted licenses, train and compete alongside males do not appear to have changed attitudes toward female jockeys, who are largely perceived as weaker and less capable than male jockeys.

Abstract:
Mots clé: dichotomie Established/outsiders; jeux d’échelle; immigration; identité nationale; société coloniale; dichotomie urbain/rural In 1965, Norbert Elias and John Scotson published a seminal study on the dynamics of established/outsider relations. Their analysis has been criticized on several grounds, including its relative inattention to space. A number of recent studies have sought to build on Elias and Scotson's model by putting greater emphasis on space. These studies represent important interventions in the development of a relational approach to local established/outsider relations. Nonetheless, such an approach would benefit from further refinement. In particular, an Eliasian approach can be especially valuable to the study of local power relations and identity constructions if it takes into account the overlapping nature of configurations, emphasizes that individuals are simultaneously embedded in a large number of configurations, recognizes that different spatial contexts are not merely external resources to be manipulated by (local) actors, and refuses to treat conflicts that happen to play out in local contexts as purely local phenomena.

Abstract:
This paper will introduce readers to the field of sports in the Republic of Ireland with specific reference to changing power relations between the sexes. It will situate a present-day social phenomenon, that is, Irish females‘ increasing involvement in what are seen traditionally as male-associated sports such as Gaelic football, rugby and soccer, within the context of social processes in which more or less independent groups of people (that is, male and female sportspeople) are becoming more interdependent. Qualitative data including 12 in-depth interviews with high performance (elite) female athletes (conducted between 1999 and 2002), three in-depth interviews with leading Irish sports officials (1999–2003) and participant observation notes (from the author's involvement in the field of sports since the early 1990s) will be used to examine aspects of the sport-gender nexus in Ireland. These will be situated within a sociological analysis of the emergence and development of sports for women since the 1970s, and they will be used to argue that the relatively slight shift in the balance of power in favour of females since the 1970s has led to feelings of emancipation amongst females and resistance amongst some males, though this resistance is gradually becoming weaker. Elias's theory of ‘established–outsider’ relations will be applied to suggest that females who participate in sports such as rugby, soccer and Gaelic football to a lesser extent, can be described as an ‘outsider’ group – that is, as one that has lacked the organisational resources and networks of mutual assistance to shift significantly the uneven balance of power between the sexes. Moreover, typical of outsiders in their relations with the established, dominant stereotypical views of females remain embedded in the personality structures of ‘outsiders’.

Abstract:
In this paper we revisit The Established and the Outsiders (Elias and Scotson 1965; second edition 1994). We argue that Elias was so intent upon demonstrating the heuristic value of his theory of established–outsider relations that he allowed these concerns to cloud his assessment of Scotson's data. We argue that the paradox is Elias had already developed more sophisticated and flexible tools for analysing the dynamic complexities of human figurations. Finally, we suggest that the problems Elias encountered in maintaining an effective degree of detachment in this study may lead to a wider appreciation of the difficulties facing anyone wishing to move from an understanding of the principles of the involvement-detachment thesis to their practical application.

Abstract:
One facet of group identity is the construction and description of ‘the outsider’. A key dimension of this is the way outsiders are labelled. οἱ ἄπιστοι and τὰ ἔθνη, two outsider-designations used in Pauline texts, are examined here to determine what their use and function indicate about group identity. In these cases, we see the creation of a new designation and linguistic innovation in the way a designation is used, which includes the alteration of the referent of an established term. Defining and understanding ‘the outsider’, grappling with how to represent outsiders to ‘ourselves’ and negotiating across group boundaries were key undertakings that led to linguistic creativity, change and transformation. That such linguistic creativity can be seen as going on ‘at the boundary’, to create and define the boundaries of the movement, shows how important such boundaries were.

The goal of our focal article was to initiate a conversation on how I–O psychology can reengage in research on intelligence. We are encouraged by the ways in which the commentators have furthered this conversation. We discuss 4 overarching themes in the set of commentaries: the extent that I–O psychology is contributing to the intelligence field, outsiders' impressions of I–O psychology's contributions to intelligence research, ways I–O psychology can contribute to intelligence research, and ideas about what prevents us from doing this research. We hope this collection of articles serves to truly ignite research by our field on this critical construct.

Corliss, Cindy L. "The established and the outsiders : cyberbullying as an exclusionary process." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8175/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cyberbullying has become increasingly problematic over the past decade with extreme instances of young people committing suicide due to their victimisation. While the prevalence of cyberbullying along with its effects have been researched and identified, the theoretical underpinnings for determining why young people engage in these behaviours has been under researched. A clear understanding behind the motivations into cyberbullying as exclusion is necessary in order to help decrease the behaviours as well as addressing deficiencies in defining what cyberbullying is. This study used a mixed methods design, first using quantitative data via a survey designed to target pupils (n=450) in three Catholic Secondary schools in Glasgow, Scotland. Second, qualitative data was collected through interviews with educational professionals (n=13; nine teachers, four non-teacher educators). The discussion of findings focuses on the perceptions of cyberbullying through the eyes of educators and how they understand and recognise the exclusionary process. To facilitate understanding cyberbullying as exclusion, the results of this study were explored through the lens of the Established and Outsiders framework. The research finds that while teachers are undereducated and uninformed on social media and cyberbullying, young people continue to increase their knowledge and access to these sites for both socialisation and exclusion, which is having a significant effect on their physical and mental well being. While most young people surveyed claim not to have been victims of cyberbullying, the evidence from both the survey and interviews agree that girls were more likely to engage in cyberbullying as both victim and bully. Teachers from the three participating schools experienced challenges in understanding and recognising cyberbullying and the usage of social media by young people. Their abilities to recognise these behaviours were often underpinned by their lack of training in areas of technology in conjunction with their negative attitudes toward social media. This study enriches the wider literature by examining cyberbullying as exclusion through the lens of Elias’s Established and Outsider framework, providing a novel approach to understanding the exclusionary process. The study also provides evidence asserting the need for providing in-service teachers education, training and support in understanding and recognising cyberbullying behaviours.

Meredith, Steven. "Established AS outsiders? : figurational 'binds' and 'bonds' in a Welsh working-class community." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/109740/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about how people living in a typical urban working-class community located in South Wales get on with each other. Reflecting upon the empirical data collected over three years of ethnographic fieldwork, it tells the story of ‘Ashmill’ and the relationships which have developed among generations of residents. The focus is on ‘Blackacre’, a council estate geographically situated at the heart of Ashmill, its residents tending to be regarded as ‘rough’ and ‘antisocial’ by residents of the surrounding neighbourhood. The thesis presents an intensive case study of the community figuration of Ashmill, and makes theoretical-empirical contributions which may have resonance with similar communities. Council estates, as a result of deliberate policies and their unplanned consequences, have come to be seen as ‘residualised’ places for ‘problem’ people, who are frequently stigmatised as ‘chavs’: [C]ouncil [H]oused [A]nd [V]iolent. This thesis considers how this came to be, indicating the long-term, processual, relational, and transformational character of the problem which is investigated in this thesis using a figurational-sociological framing, specifically through the analytical lens of Elias and Scotson’s (1994) established-outsider model. Analysed figurationally, the stigmatisation of Blackacre and its residents as ‘rough’ and ‘antisocial’ can be understood as the outcome of long-term processes in which interdependent residential groups have become trapped in a power dynamic. A double-bind situation develops, involving feelings mutual fear and resentment between some residential groups, whilst also creating affective bonding among others. The established-outsider model is elaborated and adapted using ‘relative deprivation theory’ as developed by Lea and Young (1984). This more directly connects relational phenomena producing feelings of resentment between working-class residents with the generation of crime and violence. This thesis, therefore, presents an example of ‘sociological criminology’, synthesising figurational sociology and left realist criminology with the aim of adding to the corpus of reality congruent social scientific knowledge on collective processes of status honour and stigma.

Abstract:
Sama Dilaut are a marginalized, ethnic group in Malaysia and are known as seafaring nomads. The group is found in the whole Coral Triangle. Many groups around the world who share a history of nomadic origin, also face marginalization by society. One cannot help but wonder why these different groups face similar repercussions.   In Malaysia, the Sama Dilaut are stateless and considered to be in the country illegally, despite the fact that the group has been documented to live in the area as far back as the 16th Century. The future prospects for the stateless children in the country due Malaysia’s statement to ratify UN Convention for the Rights of Children but not UN Convention for Stateless People. The NGO, PKPMM, Sabah provides formal schooling for marginalized children in the state of Sabah. It thus seems paradoxical that the state aims to provide educational opportunities, while at the same time attempting to arrest and deport members of the Sama Dilaut.     This study is conducted as a deductive qualitative field study based on semi-structured interviews to collect empirical data. I traveled to Sabah, on Eastern Borneo in Malaysia, to visit PKPKM Sabah. The qualitative tradition of ethnomethodology provided my approach. Furthermore, the analysis is a thematic text analysis which is primary based on the explanations by Monica Dalen in the book Interview as Method (2011).   The theory the Established and the Outsiders, and the Durable Inequality theory provided the base for this research. These two theories have been used as theoretical framework and analytical assistance. With the awareness that the perspective of western sociology could become indistinct to apply globally. Yet, these two theories are most suitable.   The inequality between, the two categories, Sama Dilaut and the majority society is a natural routine and is manifested in most social contacts them between. This also consolidates and legitimizes the situation and the various positions, the members from each category, are in. Furthermore, it is presented how this takes place over generations; individuals are replaced within the categories, but the categorical behavior consistent. The group of Sama Dilaut does not only deviates from the majority society but also lacks a strong cohesion within their own ethnic group (Elias & Scotson 1999:50-51), which can be applied to other marginalized groups who share a similar history of nomadic traditions.   The organization, PKPKM Sabah, which has been working to legalize their operations, can now provide formal education for the underprivileged children of Sama Dilaut. At the same time, the policy pursued by the government towards illegal immigrants, deprives them of their educational rights, which are granted to them by Education for All. Despite the presence of the PKPKM schools and education centers, the children of Sama Dilaut have very little educational opportunities.

Abstract:
During recent years, America’s attitude toward immigrants has become increasingly excluding. Previous research shows that it is common for illegal immigration and crime to be related to one another, although research shows that there is no relationship between them. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, is known for dividing the American people from the illegal immigrants. Therefore, this study analyses how Trump portraits the American people and the illegal immigrants. Further, the study analyses how he divides these groups from each other. The study is based on a qualitative content analysis where six speeches made by Trump is analysed. The results of the study show that Trump positively portrays the American people by saying they possess unique values. Unlike this, he portrays the illegal immigrants as people that commit crimes such as murder and sexual crimes. Trump also portraits the two groups by dividing them from each other. He does this by giving a positive picture of the American people at the same time as he gives a negative picture of the illegal immigrants. Further, he divides the groups by creating a feeling of unity between the American people through talking about shared culture, values, and an unique history.<br>Under de senaste åren har USA:s inställning blivit alltmer exkluderande gentemot immigranter.

Abstract:
<p>Several studies have shown that the Swedish labour market for different reasons is characterized by ethnical discrimination and that people who have another cultural background than Swedish are being excluded. Most studies done within this area have been focused on why it is harder for immigrants to enter the labour market and identifying the contributing mechanisms for this phenomenon. Instead the aim of this study was to see how the immigrants view their own cultural identity and background and how they perceive that their cultural competences are being valued when they apply for a job. To examine this, the following problematic was used: How does a person who has been brought up with both the Swedish culture and another culture look at using this as a cultural competence when they apply for a job. Two different theories were then applied to analyze the problematic, Erving Goffman´s theory about Stigma and Norbert Elias theory about the Established and the Outsiders. To carry out the study, a qualitative method with interviews was used and 8 people from 6 different cultural backgrounds participated. The results show that if the knowledge that had emerged from a persons cultural background turned out to benefit that person in his or her work situation than that person was more likely to see cultural background as a competence. Although if the condition was the opposite then there was no need to see it or to use it as a competence. Therefore cultural competence seems to be useful in specific situations and in interaction with certain people or groups of people rather than being viewed as an overall, general competence. To accentuate cultural competence also proved to be difficult due to the stereotyped conceptions about immigrants that exist in society. The conclusion of this study is that emphasizing cultural competence can sometimes benefit a person although there is always a risk that it could lead to increased stigmatization.</p>

The main focus is the conflict between these two groups of professionals, a secondary and complementary are the malfunctions that contribute to the existence of conflict between groups. The hypothesis that guides the research is that, not educators-teachers, while veteran group, relies on the old, asserting itself through its tacit and empirical knowledge, and PDI, in turn, rely on titration/diploma. The survey was conducted through interviews and observation at schools, aimed to understand the differences between the established groups of educators and teachers, but above all, understand the way that both express the power relations in space and time in school. The research required as a base, three analytical frameworks: Norbert Elias (2000), which deals with power relations; the Study of the Sociology of Deviance Becker (2008) and Erving Goffman's Stigma (1891). From the three authors of the study was observed within the power relations between groups of educators and teachers, some trends and collective provisions, such as assertion of superiority by tradition, affirmation of superiority of securities, inclinations stigmatization, feelings of victimization and low institutional bureaucracy, we can see properly, with respect to the secondary focus of the research, studied in schools The presence of a low level of institutional bureaucracy, which helps to stimulate faculty conflicts between groups analyzed.

Abstract:
This qualitative text analysis has studied medias portrayal of Taimour Abdulwahab, Anders Behring Breivik and their respective terrorist attacks. The purpose of the essay was to study the newspapers portrayal of the terrorists, with one terrorist being part of an us group and the other one part of a them group. It also aspires to uncover whether the medias portrayal of the terrorists reproduce mechanisms which help sustain the gap between us and them. To answer the essays research questions we have used the media theory about agenda setting and the sociologists Norbert Elias’ and John L. Scotsons theory about established and outsiders. The analysis of news articles the first two days after the terrorist attacks in Swedish newspapers Expressen and Aftonbladet showed a difference in the portrayal of the established Breivik, whos persona and actions were explained on an individual level, whereas the outsider Abdulwahab was connected to groups and his acts explained on a more structural level. The results have also shown how deeply connected terrorism and Islam are, which especially came through in the articles about Breivik, a Christian ethnic Norwegian man.<br>Denna kvalitativa textanalysstudie har undersökt medias framställning av Taimour Abdulwahab, Anders Behring Breivik och deras respektive terrordåd.

Abstract:
The integration policy in Sweden shall encourage individuals to support themselves and take part in society. It shall alsocontribute to equal rights and opportunities for women as well as for men. In Borlänge this has resulted in a program ofintroduction for new arrivals from other countries. However, at the unit responsible for economic support, they havediscovered that women with immigrant background more often than men seem to have trouble starting or became to anending of the program, which then especially leads women to a long-term dependence for economic support. The purpose of this study has therefore been to investigate what factors affect immigrant women’s participation in theintroduction, and what significance this participation has for their possibilities to become economically self-supporting,and integrated into Swedish society. Previous research shows that some of the obstacles for the integration of immigrant women can be that they give birthto many children, are unskilled or have a low degree of education and that they tend to be living under patriarchalgender patterns. Another problem seem to be that some women are not even known as members of the municipalities. All of these problems are as well what was shown in my own study. I have used theoretical perspectives from Bourdieu, Elias & Scotson, Giddens, Roman and al-Baldawi in my analysis.Bourdieu have interesting thoughts about capital, habitus and field, which can help us to understand how individuals arebeing shaped and are given different opportunities to act in a special way or direction. Elias & Scotson describesthrough their study around established and outsiders how the process of integration can take place and what effects thatcan be shown for the opportunities to succeed in that part. Giddens, Roman and al-Baldawi then give us different waysto look at the patriarchy and family structures around the world. The result of this study shows that the willingness to integrate and be able to take care of your own support for living isan important part for the women for succeeding. For the other women, that don’t succeed, it turns out to be just like theprevious research has been shown. Gender patterns, many children and a low or no education skill all seems to be partof the issue. It is also suggested that the generosity of the Swedish welfare system might hinder rather than help someimmigrant women to become integrated into Swedish society.

Grounded in theories of Ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis (ECA) and in Interactional Sociolinguistics (IS), we analyze the linguistic and discursive choices of these students, observed from the talk-in-interaction in a focus groups, to identify how these students demonstrate membership in certain social categories. To collect the data, we used a focus group, through which students narrated their experiences of living in a peripheral neighborhood. After a detailed transcript of the data generated in the meetings with students, which was done according to the proposal from ECA, we analyzed it based on the concept of Sacks&#8223; Membership categorization (1992). Since the categorization processes are in use and in constant negotiations, we revealed, thus, students' discursive action, during interactions with one another, to build their identities through self-categorization and categorization. The results of this research indicate participants&#8223; orientation throughout the interaction, building, through speech, the identity of outsiders, ratifying the label assigned to them by those who occupy prestigious positions of power and by those who recognize themselves as the "good society", as Elias e Scotson (2000). By categorizing themselves as deviant, the participants seem to perceive their place in the city surveyed, but, they do not often accept this label passively: this generates reports of a conflictual relationship between these young people and the members of the so-called "good society". Thus, we conclude that through membership categorization, students build and assume the identity of outsiders, and that a description and categorization work is quite relevant to the study of the construction of social identities.<br>Partindo da premissa básica de que a linguagem é uma forma de ação social, o objetivo central deste estudo é analisar como alunos da Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA) de uma escola pública localizada em um bairro periférico de uma cidade do interior de Minas Gerais constroem e assumem as suas identidades sociais.

Abstract:
The University of Groningen has been an international university since its foundation in 1614. The first professors formed a rich international community, and many students came from outside the Netherlands, especially from areas now belonging to Germany. Internationalization, a popular slogan nowadays, is therefore nothing new, but its meaning has changed over time. How did the University of Groningen grow from a provincial institution established for religious reasons into a top-100 university with 36,000 students, of whom 25% come from abroad and almost half of the academic staff is of foreign descent? What is the identity of this four-century-old university that is still strongly anchored in the northern part of the Netherlands but that also has a mind that is open to the world? The history of the university, as told by Klaas van Berkel and Guus Termeer, ends with a short paragraph on the impact of the corona crisis.

Abstract:
Screens are ubiquitous today. They display information; present image worlds; are portable; connect to mobile networks; mesmerize. However, contemporary screen media also seek to eliminate the presence of the screen and the visibilities of its boundaries. As what is image becomes increasingly indistinguishable against the viewer’s actual surroundings, this unsettling prompts re-examination about not only what is the screen, but also how the screen demarcates and what it stands for in relation to our understanding of our realities in, outside and against images. Through case studies drawn from three media technologies – Virtual Reality; holograms; and light projections – this book develops new theories of the surfaces on and spaces in which images are displayed today, interrogating critical lines between art and life; virtuality and actuality; truth and lies. What we have today is not just the contestation of the real against illusion or the unreal, but the disappearance itself of difference and a gluttony of the unreal which both connect up to current politics of distorted truth values and corrupted terms of information. The Post-Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light Projections: Where Screen Boundaries Lie is thus about not only where the image’s borders and demarcations are established, but also the screen boundary as the instrumentation of today’s intense virtualizations that do not tell the truth. In all this, a new imagination for images emerges, with a new space for cultures of presence and absence, definitions of object and representation, and understandings of dis- and re-placement – the post-screen.

Abstract:
AbstractDevelopments in mobile digital technologies are disrupting conventional understandings of space and place for smartphone users. One way in which location-based media are refiguring previously taken-for-granted spatial traditions is via GPS-enabled online dating and hook-up apps. For sexual minorities, these apps can reconfigure any street, park, bar, or home into a queer space through a potential meeting between mutually attracted individuals, but what does this signify for already-existing queer spaces? This chapter examines how smartphone apps including Grindr, Tinder, and Blued synthesize online queer encounter with offline physical space to create a new hybrid terrain predicated on availability, connection, and encounter. It is also a terrain that can sidestep established gay neighborhoods entirely. I explore how this hybridization impacts on older, physically rooted gay neighborhoods and the role that these neighborhoods have traditionally played in brokering social and sexual connection for sexual minorities. Few would deny that location-based apps have come to play a valuable role in multiplying opportunities for sexual minorities. However, the stratospheric rise of these technologies also provokes questions about their impact on embodied encounter, queer community, and a sense of place. A decade on from Grindr’s release, this chapter evaluates the impact of location-based media on gay spaces and reflects on what the increasing hybridization of online and offline spaces for same-sex encounter might mean for queer lives of the future.

Abstract:
Abstract The question of a permanent Bologna Secretariat has been raised both within and outside of the BFUG, mostly after the 2015 Ministerial conference and as an element of the discussion of “the EHEA after 2020”. So far, discussions have mainly identified a number of obstacles. The article explores both political and practical aspects of establishing a more permanent Bologna Secretariat. Politically, whatever structure is chosen for the Secretariat needs to enable Ministers, the BFUG, and other key actors to develop and implement their priorities for the EHEA for the next period, realistically 2023–2030, since a permanent Secretariat cannot be established already from 2020. The organization of the Secretariat will have a clear impact on the shape of the EHEA and its policy making bodies and structures. The paper outlines the key tasks for the Secretariat, its formal status and considerations for deciding on its location; financial, staff; governance issues; and relations between the Secretariat and the authorities of the country hosting it as well as with those of the countries hosting Ministerial conferences. While the paper does not argue that a “permanent” Bologna Secretariat is the only possibility, it does explore and propose solutions to key obstacles and demonstrates that if it is judged politically desirable to establish more permanent Secretariat, it is practically possible to do so. The paper also lays a solid basis for developing such a Secretariat”.

Abstract:
AbstractTranscriptionally active HPV infection is recognized as a prognostic factor in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Also, p16 positivity has been established as an effective surrogate biomarker for HPV and shares its prognostic significance in cancer of the oropharynx. Less clear is the prognostic role of p16/HPV status in non-oropharyngeal head and neck cancers since relevant studies have produced conflicting results. The existing evidence suggests that p16 is a poor surrogate marker for HPV infection in non-oropharyngeal cancers, while the prognostic impact of HPV positivity is reserved for the oropharynx. Consequently, routine HPV testing is not recommended for disease sites of the head and neck outside oropharynx.

Full text
Abstract:
Preventing brittle fracture is an essential part of instituting life-cycle management strategies for fixed pressure equipment. Using fracture mechanics principles to establish permissible minimum pressurization temperature (MPT) envelopes for components is one way to mitigate the potential for unstable flaw growth. In the refining industry, heavy-walled, low-alloy hydroprocessing reactors are designed to operate at elevated temperatures and high hydrogen partial pressures. Components that operate in high-pressure hydrogen environments require special treatment and necessitate guidance that falls outside the bounds of current pressure vessel construction codes. This operating environment results in two factors that affect the MPT envelope: long-term temper embrittlement and hydrogen embrittlement. Additionally, hydrogen charging can manifest damage in two ways: fast (brittle) fracture due to a reduction in fracture toughness and slow (subcritical) hydrogen-assisted crack growth. When developing a MPT envelope for a given component, both failure modes need to be considered in addition to residual stress effects from weld overlay or cladding. MPT envelopes provide insight into the permissible pressure-temperature combinations for specific locations and for chosen reference flaw sizes. From a reliability standpoint, understanding the risk of brittle fracture associated with heavy-walled reactors for all operating scenarios is crucial. Furthermore, taking the appropriate life-cycle management steps, such as establishing MPT envelopes, coupling MPT analysis predictions with targeted inspection, optimizing process operating conditions, and developing a flaw acceptance criteria to mitigate the risk of crack propagation and ultimately, brittle fracture is essential. In this study, a fracture-mechanics based methodology is summarized that is fully documented in upcoming Welding Research Council (WRC) Bulletin 562 [1] to determine MPT envelopes for all components (in any service environment) based on fast fracture with supplemental MPT requirements based on slow fracture for equipment that operates in high-pressure hydrogen environments. Finally, a finite element analysis-based case study of a 2-1/4-Cr-1-Mo hydrotreater reactor is summarized and practical life cycle-management guidance is offered based on analysis results. This example highlights how evaluation of start-up and shut-down procedures for heavy-walled reactors has the potential to save significant time and related cost per unit shut-down cycle, while maintaining an acceptable risk tolerance against subcritical crack growth and brittle fracture.

Abstract:
Abstract The Aasta Hansteen spar platform in the Norwegian Sea has a polyester rope mooring system. The anchors and large parts of the polyester ropes are outside of the safety exclusion zone granted by the Norwegian authorities. Fishing vessels cannot be denied as long as they are outside of the safety zone, and the polyester mooring ropes need to withstand abrasion loads from the possible fishing activity. A fishing activity study in 2013 defined probability for fishing, size of possible fishing vessels and type of fishing equipment. Numerical simulations of the mooring system and crossing fishing trawl equipment made it possible to establish trawl abrasion load cases, including trawl wire lengths, speed and contact pressure. No jacket design or jacket material was at the time confirmed to withstand the established abrasion loads. The jacket solution to be chosen for the project thus needed to be specially developed, designed, tested and approved to give sufficient resistance against the established abrasion loads. Several vendors developed and offered different jacket solutions, and the selection of cut resistant jacket was dependent on adequate testing. Based on input and comments from Equinor and rope vendors, DNV constructed a test rig extension to their 2500T horizontal test bed, where the required length of trawl wire was pulled over the polyester rope with the needed contact pressure. Full-size (diameter) ropes with the proposed cut resistant jackets were tested, including break strength testing after the abrasion test. This paper presents how the possible trawl activity was defined, the numerical simulation of trawl/mooring line interaction, the test rig setup and some test results of the trawl wire abrasion testing.

Abstract:
With the purpose of enhancement of heat transfer performance and reduction of the volume of steam generator (SG), a structure of longitudinal finned tubes was proposed to replace the smooth tubes of SG in this paper. Taking the SG smooth tubes of Daya bay Nuclear Power plant as a reference, the simplified heat transfer model of new longitudinal finned tubes was established by ANSYS CFX. Three-dimensional numerical model was developed to investigate the fluid-solid coupled thermal hydraulic characteristics of different types of the longitudinal finned tubes compared with the smooth tubes. Analysis of calculation results were sufficiently discussed for the effect of mass flow rate, fin array, solid thermal conductivity and frictional resistance. The numerical results revealed that the heat transfer coefficient increase with the increasing mass flow rate in the secondary side. The material of the tubes has significantly influence on the heat transfer process. Different flow conditions have different thermal hydraulic characteristics. The evaluated criterion to judge the enhancement of the heat transfer of the coupled process was also proposed. The numerical results can provide some useful guidance for design optimization of longitudinal finned tubes in SG.

Abstract:
A series of experiments was conducted to observe nucleate boiling phenomena in horizontal tubes with inner diameters varying from 0.05 mm to 3.0 mm. Diverse behaviors of bubble growth were explored, identified by which tubes were classified into micro, mini and macro scales. In micro tubes (Di ≤ 200 μm), the liquid was emitted instantaneously with extremely fast liquid-vapor interfacial movement, referred as explosive emission boiling phenomenon. It is hard to record bubble growth process with high speed camera. In mini tubes (200 μm &lt; Di &lt; 2.5 mm), though liquid was also emitted outsides, the interface moves relative slow and the whole process of bubble growth can be observed. Two distinct stages, referred as spherical and oblate bubble growth stages, were divided. In macro tubes (Di ≥ 2.5 mm), only spherical bubble growth stage exists and the growth rate is much smaller than that in mini tubes. Furthermore, the mechanism of diverse bubble dynamics was analyzed. In mini/micro tubes, decreasing tube diameter can trigger a transition from spherical to oblate bubble growth and consequently establish a thin film between liquid-vapor interface and heated wall. The thin liquid film evaporates vigorously and accelerates the interfacial movement, which reversely enhances evaporation of thin film. A positive interaction between interfacial movement and thin film evaporation establishes, resulting in the interface moving faster and faster and consequently emitted liquid outsides instantaneously. In macro tubes, as tube diameter increasing, the transition and sequential positive interaction can not be raised. Hence, the bubble maintains growing spherically as that in pool boiling.

Abstract:
This paper introduces a framework for enhancing creative thinking in engineering design. As a flexible methodology, the proposed Creative Engineering Design (CED) framework integrates a new concept development tool, the Concept Assessment Taxonomy (CAT), which constitutes the core of the proposed methodology. By combining the procedures of concept generation, evaluation and selection in a single matrix, the CAT aims to systematize and simplify the overall conceptualization process, while delivering design process transparency. Early trials have shown the effectiveness of the CED framework in offering procedural guidance and a better comprehension of the multifaceted nature of engineering design. It complements well-established textbook-methods in an effort to reduce ad-hoc and trial-and-error approaches, while minimizing decision-making based on intuition and guesswork. In order to demonstrate its usefulness within a real world context, the proposed methodology is applied to a case study in the field of mechanical design: a new mechanical fuel injection system capable of curbing small engine emissions.

Abstract:
A one-dimensional heat transfer model was established for the three typical parts of Intermediate Fluid Vaporizer (IFV), namely, evaporator, condenser and thermolator used to vaporize liquefied natural gas (LNG). Seawater and propane were applied as heat sources and intermediate working fluid respectively for regasification and cold energy recovery of LNG in an IFV system. Based on the energy balance among the evaporator, the condenser and the thermolator, the heat transfer and thermodynamic model was established and the distribution of temperature of all fluids and heat transfer coefficients were predicted. The effects of several parameters, including the inlet temperature of seawater and LNG, the mass flow of seawater and LNG, the pressure of LNG, on the temperature distribution and heat transfer coefficients were conducted. The results show that the heat transfer capacity of evaporator was enhanced greatly by increasing inlet temperature and inlet mass flow rate of seawater and the thermal resistances in the two sides of evaporator were proportionate, and show that the heat transfer coefficient of condenser increases gradually along flow path and the curve exists convex firstly and another concave with the turning point, and also show that the heat transfer capacity of thermolator decreases gradually with the heat transfer coefficient inside tube keeping consistent along with the flow path and the heat transfer coefficient inside tube was much bigger than heat transfer coefficient outside tube. The results show that the main thermal resistance is the heat transfer of nature gas flowing across the outside tube banks for the thermolator and the propane condensing outside tube for the condenser, respectively.

Abstract:
Ship nuclear power platform is a small and movable power plant on the sea, aiming at generating electric energy and producing fresh water, it provides support for the national energy strategy. Subsequent to a loss of coolant accident (LOCA), steam is vented in the reactor containment following vaporization of liquid and/or steam expansion. The temperature as well as pressure in the condensation rises synchronously. For removing heat and reducing pressure inside containment subsequent to a LOCA, the Passive containment cooling system of Ship nuclear power platform is designed. In order to establish and maintain the passive heat removing channel, steam condenses on the containment condenser tube surface, coupling natural convection of the seawater inside the tubes. The heat transfer mechanism of Passive containment cooling system is very complex. To solve this problem, a three dimensional heat exchanging/one dimensional natural circulation coupling numerical computing method is proposed to obtained the safety performance of the reactor containment. Models of heat exchanging process between steam which contains non-condensable gas inside the reactor containment and sea water outside are firstly established. Then the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the steam and sea water beside the heat transfer tubes are obtained by a simulation which is carried out in a LOCA.

Abstract:
Following an accident, the passive nuclear power plant CAP1400 mainly uses cooling water evaporation on the outer containment surface to remove the decay heat inside containment to outside environment to ensure the plant to a stable status. But the outside surface of the containment vessel is attached by a large number of different forms of the disorder structure including circumferential welds and longitudinal welds on the containment surface, and small local bulge, which may affect water film flow and coverage outside containment surface. Once a large amount of water splashes and can’t return to the containment surface, the heat removal capacity of the system during and after an accident will be significantly reduced, and the safety of power plants will be threatened. This paper simulates the water flow characteristics on the containment surface. Firstly, a simplified analysis model of water film flow structure is established considering different forms of structures including the circumferential weld, small local bulge and etc. The circumferential weld is simplified with the horizontal protrusion. Local small uplift is simulated with point-like protrusion. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software STAR CCM+ is applied in this simulation with the volume of fluid method and surface tension model, and sets contact angle and other parameters according to the characteristics of the containment surface coating, so as to establish the CFD analysis method. The analysis results and water flow test results agree well. And then, the CFD analysis method is used to analyze the flow patterns of water film on the surface of the wall under different conditions. The results show that the circumferential weld has a certain influence on the initial water film covering only. But the film coverage rate of the water film is stable after the water film is stable, and there is no loss of the water film. For the circumferential weld on the vertical wall, the effect on the water film coverage is little. Water film loss of low-flow is negligible, and water film loss of high-flow is no more than 1%. For the form of local small protrusions, little change of the flow characteristics of water film can be observed. The structure form of the containment outside wall is various. According to the rules of the water film, including the water film covering width and the water film loss, it can be used as the design input of the accident analysis program WGOTHIC to guide the system design.

Abstract:
Flow-diverter (FD) stent implantation is an attractive treatment for cerebral aneurysms because of its low level of invasiveness. FD stent has a fine mesh structure, and the aim of FD implantation is to reduce the blood flow in an aneurysm by covering the aneurysm orifice. However, the fine mesh of the implant poses the risk of parent artery occlusion. One approach for avoiding this risk is to use a stent with a higher porosity. Previous studies have shown that placing a strut to disturb the inflow entering an aneurysm can promote a higher reduction in aneurysm flow. However, Hirabayashi et al. reported that a high-porosity stent can be sensitive to misdeployment in flow reduction. We hypothesized that a positioning error in flow reduction was sensitive to the relative position of the strut to the inflow configuration. In this study, we performed flow simulation to investigate the relationship between the inflow zone of the aneurysm neck and the positions of struts. Lattice Boltzmann (LB) flow simulation was performed to allow a comprehensive study of strut positions. Two rectangular solids were used as the strut model. Steady flow simulation was applied to models based on ideal and realistic three-dimensional (3D) aneurysm geometry, changing two strut positions along the neck plane. For both models, velocity boundaries were imposed on the inlet and a constant pressure boundary was imposed on the outlet. Average flow velocity in an aneurysm was calculated to evaluate the dependency of the flow reduction effect on the deployment position. We analyzed aneurysm flow using the following three strategies to observe the relationship between flow configuration, strut configuration, and flow reduction. Analysis A: Flow reduction rate (Rf) with one strut. A strut was moved from the proximal to the distal neck (perpendicular deployment) or from outside to inside (parallel deployment). Analysis B: Rf with two struts. One strut (strut A) was fixed in a specific position on the neck plane. The other (strut B) was moved along the neck plane in parallel to strut A. Analysis C: Rf with two struts. Strut B was located on the distal or inner side of strut A. The distance between the two struts was changed, and the two struts were moved along the neck plane while maintaining that distance. From the results of Analyses A and B, we confirmed a critical area in the inflow zone that maintained a high flow reduction regardless of the position of the second strut. The results of Analysis C confirmed that there were several distances between the struts at which flow reduction was almost constant. This constant reduction was maintained when one of the struts was located in the critical area, whereas the reduction was disturbed if both struts were located outside the area. These results suggest that the influence of positioning errors can be reduced by constantly placing at least one strut in a critical area, resulting in a high flow reduction. This may lead to optimal stent porosity for flow reduction and robustness of deployment.

Emelander, Tom. "Industry's First Sidetrack in 12-1/4-in Casing Enables Operator to Re-Establish Production in GOM." In Offshore Technology Conference. OTC, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4043/31245-ms.

Abstract:
Abstract In a Gulf of Mexico (GOM) ultradeepwater well, liner integrity issues forced an operator to consider milling a conventional casing exit to sidetrack as deep as possible to re-establish production. Milling a window in 12 -1/4-in. heavy wall casing above the liner hanger had never been achieved before because of the thickness and grade of casing. A successful installation would require significant preplanning and testing to prove capability before real-world application. The service provider recommended an off-the-shelf solution to accommodate a 12 -1/4-in. casing exit. It was determined that the best fit for the application would be the standard equipment used for exits out of 10 -3/4-in. casing, given the similar internal diameters (IDs). Despite never having performed an installation in this casing size, the provider had a successful run history for exits in heavy weight casing strings. Job challenges included avoiding cutting a casing connection, managing swarf, milling through a centralizer, and achieving a low dogleg for production packers. Additional challenges included torque limitations, mill gauge, and the limestone formation. An 8-in. outside diameter (OD) system with mechanical anchor and 9 -7/8-in. OD mills was sent to a test well designed to replicate the target section of the offshore well. Based on determinations made in the planning phase, milling of the window and rathole would be staged in two trips. Additionally, a replica drilling bottom hole assembly (BHA), 8 -5/8-in. casing, and a replica production packer would need to pass through the window to ensure both window quality and low enough dogleg. Dogleg data was acquired through multiple logging runs during the 10-day operation. The installation went as planned, along with an additional custom window elongation run to decrease the dogleg severity to approximately 4.5°/100 -ft (30m). Having successfully validated the equipment for the application, the operator and servicer prover were comfortable moving onto the GOM well. Considering the test results, the team planned to mill the window and rathole in one trip. They achieved the 22 -ft long window and 15 -ft rathole in one run that lasted 26 hours. This installation is the first sidetrack conducted with a whipstock in 12 -1/4-in. casing. This paper shows that a safe, reliable casing exit installation is possible in difficult applications, such as uniquely heavy wall casing, even though it may previously have been considered impossible. This successful application provides the industry with contingency options in similar scenarios.

Foster, Jessica. Survey of Legal Mechanisms Relating to Groundwater Along the Texas-Mexico Border. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Natural Resources Systems, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/eenrs.groundwateralongborder.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to present a factual picture of the multiple groundwater governance frameworks that cover the same transboundary aquifers on the Texas-Mexico border. The study can then serve as a foundation to support future research and as a reference for those sharing groundwater resources on the border to use in considering whether and how to coordinate management. Currently, Texas A&amp;M School of Law, the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&amp;M University, and the Texas Water Resources Institute are collaboratively pursuing a larger interdisciplinary project, and the study presented in this report is part of that concerted endeavor. First, the project establishes a study area, then identifies who are the stakeholders in the area, and finally summarizes the various rules each entity applies to groundwater. The study area selected is based on the aquifers identified in the 2016 study noted above (see Figure 1). Although there is currently no formal agreement between governments or users in Mexico and Texas for managing the reservoirs that cross underneath the international border, this survey represents a preliminary step in addressing the larger problems that the absence of a cooperative groundwater management framework presents. All of the institutional approaches employed in the various jurisdictions surveyed here model features from which developing management approaches could draw. Equally, noting gaps in the institutional approaches themselves and the ad hoc groundwater withdrawals occurring outside the reach of those institutions illustrates potential value in engaging local users in Texas’ and Mexico’s respective groundwater governance arrangements.

Abstract:
Forced by the 1997 Southeast Asian crisis to recognize the external vulnerabilities that openness to volatile capital flows result in and upset over the post-crisis policy responses imposed by the IMF, countries in the sub-region saw the need for a regional financial safety net that can pre-empt or mitigate future crises. At the outset, the aim of the initiative, then led by Japan, was to create a facility or design a mechanism that was independent of the United States and the IMF, since the former was less concerned with vulnerabilities in Asia than it was in Latin America and that the latter’s recommendations proved damaging for countries in the region. But US opposition and inherited geopolitical tensions in the region blocked Japan’s initial proposal to establish an Asian Monetary Fund, a kind of regional IMF. As an alternative, the ASEAN+3 grouping (ASEAN members plus China, Japan and South Korea) opted for more flexible arrangements, at the core of which was a network of multilateral and bilateral central bank swap agreements. While central bank swap agreements have played a role in crisis management, the effort to make them the central instruments of a cooperatively established regional safety net, the Chiang Mai Initiative, failed. During the crises of 2008 and 2020 countries covered by the Initiative chose not to rely on the facility, preferring to turn to multilateral institutions such as the ADB, World Bank and IMF or enter into bilateral agreements within and outside the region for assistance. The fundamental problem was that because of an effort to appease the US and the IMF and the use of the IMF as a foil against the dominance of a regional power like Japan, the regional arrangement was not a real alternative to traditional sources of balance of payments support. In particular, access to significant financial assistance under the arrangement required a country to be supported first by an IMF program and be subject to the IMF’s conditions and surveillance. The failure of the multilateral effort meant that a specifically Asian safety net independent of the US and the IMF had to be one constructed by a regional power involving support for a network of bilateral agreements. Japan was the first regional power to seek to build such a network through it post-1997 Miyazawa Initiative. But its own complex relationship with the US meant that its intervention could not be sustained, more so because of the crisis that engulfed Japan in 1990. But the prospect of regional independence in crisis resolution has revived with the rise of China as a regional and global power. This time both economics and China’s independence from the US seem to improve prospects of successful regional cooperation to address financial vulnerability. A history of tensions between China and its neighbours and the fear of Chinese dominance may yet lead to one more failure. But, as of now, the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s support for a large number of bilateral swap arrangements and its participation in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership seem to suggest that Asian countries may finally come into their own.
