Abstract:
Parties are the key actors shaping women's representation in advanced parliamentary democracies. Based on traditional patterns of feminist organizing, conventional wisdom suggests that parties of the left are the strongest advocates for women. Despite the prevalence of this claim, a burgeoning body of work indicates that parties on the right can—and often do—seek to represent women. To address these competing narratives, this article offers the first large-N, party-level study of women's descriptive and substantive representation over place and time. The results suggest that party ideology continues to affect women's representation: right parties lag behind their left counterparts with respect to women's presence in elected office, and right and left parties address women differently on their platforms. At the same time, there is significant heterogeneity among right parties. Christian democrats, for example, are more likely than conservatives to adopt voluntary gender quotas and make policy claims on behalf of women. The traditional left-right distinction is thus too coarse to fully explain party behavior in these states.

Abstract:
Abstract Context: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 5–8% of fertile women and is often accompanied by insulin resistance, leading to increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Skeletal muscle from insulin-resistant PCOS subjects display reduced expression of nuclear encoded genes involved in mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. Objective: We aimed to investigate whether there was a primary mitochondrial dysfunction or difference in mitochondria content that might contribute to the in vivo detected insulin resistance. Design: The ATP synthesis with and without ATP use and the mitochondrial mass was determined in mitochondria isolated from myotubes established from PCOS subjects and control subjects. Patients: Myotubes were established from eight insulin-resistant PCOS subjects (verified by euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp) and eight healthy weight- and age-matched controls. Results: Mitochondrial mass and measurable mitochondrial ATP synthesis, with and without ATP use, were not different between PCOS subjects and control subjects. Conclusion: We found no evidence for a primary impaired mitochondrial function or content in myotubes established from PCOS subjects, and our results suggest that reduced expression of oxidative genes in PCOS subjects is an adaptive trait.

Abstract:
Osteoporosis is a significant concern for postmenopausal women and is a critical factor in hip fracture. Examining evidence for osteoporosis medications in hip fracture is important for optimizing treatment. Purpose Review risedronate's role for hip fracture in postmenopausal women. Methods A literature search was conducted using Medline and Web of Science. The search was limited using the terms “risedronate” and “hip fracture,” and to studies that included women. Similar articles linked to the search and pertinent articles in bibliographies were also examined. Results Risedronate has demonstrated efficacy and cost effectiveness for hip fracture, but may not be beneficial for patients with low fracture risk. Risedronate is generally well tolerated, but may cause side effects in some patient populations. Conclusion Risedronate has benefit for hip fracture, but patients should be carefully screened to determine the appropriateness of risedronate before starting treatment.

Abstract:
BackgroundAtrial fibrillation (AF) is a stronger risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women than men. We assessed whether there are sex differences in the effects of 43 established and novel risk factors and the risk of incident AF.MethodsData were used from the Scottish Heart Health Extended Cohort, a prospective cohort study with over 20 years of follow-up for AF incidence. Cox regression models were used to obtain the adjusted sex-specific HRs and 95% CIs, and the women-to-men ratio of HRs (RHRs), of incident AF associated with personal characteristics, smoking, physical measurements, diabetes mellitus, lipid, inflammatory, cardiac, and diet- and renal-related markers.ResultsOverall, 15 737 participants (52% women) were included. There were sex differences in the relationship between a 1 SD increase in body mass index (BMI), NT-pro-BNP, uric acid, and cystatin-C and the risk of AF. The HRs were 1.17 (95% CI 1.08 to 1.27) in women and 1.36 (95% CI 1.24 to 1.49) in men for BMI (RHR 0.86, 95% CI 0.77 to 0.97); 1.84 (95% CI 1.62 to 2.09) in women and 1.54 (95% CI 1.40 to 1.68) in men for NT-pro-BNP (RHR 1.22, 95% CI1.05 to 1.42); 1.27 (95% CI 1.14 to 1.41) in women and 1.10 (95% CI 1.00 to 1.20) in men for uric acid (RHR 1.17, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.35); and 1.22 (95% CI 1.13 to 1.32) in women and 1.07 (95% CI 0.96 to 1.18) in men for cystatin-C (RHR 1.16, 95% CI 1.05 to1.27).ConclusionHigher BMI is a stronger risk factor for AF in men whereas elevated NT-pro-BNP, uric acid and cystatin-C were more strongly associated with the risk of AF in women.

Abstract:
Ravn P, Overgaard K, Spencer EM, Christiansen C. Insulin-like growth factors I and II in healthy women with and without established osteoporosis. Eur J Endocrinol 1995;132:313–9. ISSN 0804–4643 We measured serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factors I and II (IGF-I and IGF-II) by radioimmunoassay in 107 healthy women aged 28–78 years and in 116 women with established osteoporosis. The women with established osteoporosis were randomized to a 1-year double-blind, placebo-controlled treatment with continuous estrogen/progestogen, anabolic steroids, salmon calcitonin or placebo and the IGFs were measured every 6 months. Women less than 35 years of age had 29% higher levels of IGF-I (p < 0.001) as compared to women above that age. For women more than 35 years of age, we found no correlation between IGF-I and age (r = 0.02). Correspondingly, we found no significant changes in serum IGF-I in 10 women, who were followed with serial measurements of IGFs every 3 months from 2 years before to 1 year after menopause; IGF-II revealed no correlation with age (r = 0.04). In the group of 116 women with established osteoporosis, IGF-I was 30% lower (p < 0.01) as compared to a group of 19 height-, weight- and age-matched nonfractured women (mean age 64 years). The IGF-II levels were equal in the two groups. Over the 1-year therapeutic intervention period, an increase in IGF-I of 13–15% (p < 0.05) was seen in the nandrolone decanoate-treated group. The same tendency was seen for hormone replacement therapy, although it was not significant. In conclusion, the serum level of IGF-I is high in young women, when peak bone mass is attained, and low in postmenopausal women with established osteoporosis. Abstract:
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the pattern of suicide and extent of depression among female commercial sex workers (CSWs). Methodology: 200 female CSWs classified as beginners and established depending on the number of years of sex work were referred to Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, India, by an NGO called Swathi Mane which works for the betterment of these women. Results: The pattern of suicide and the number of attempts among both the groups were different indicating that the number of years of sex work played a major role among these women in deciding the number of attempts and pattern of suicide. The reasons for attempting suicide also are interesting to the fact that the women who are new to this profession suffer from depression and guilt and attempt suicide, while women who are into this profession for quite some time now are accustomed to this trade and have lesser or no suicide attempts. The depression scores among these two groups were also higher as per Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression scores.

Abstract:
The Women Entrepreneurship Programme (WEP) was developed after a need had been identifiedfor such a training intervention. The WEP provides entrepreneurial and business management training to women entrepreneurs. This empirical paper measures the effectiveness of the WEP after the respondents had been through the training intervention. The sample consists of 180 women entrepreneurs, where 116 respondents form the experimental group and 64 respondents the control group. Factor analysis is presented and several statistical tests executed to present the statistically significant differences between the two groups in the sample. The findings highlight the WEP delegates’ acquisition of new entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. Furthermore, the respondents reported an increase in the number of employees, turnover, productivity and profit. It was statistically proven that the WEP is effective in training potential, start-up and established women entrepreneurs in South Africa.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is recommended as the best practice which results in normal growth and development of the healthy infants.  In cases where the mother is unable to provide adequate breastmilk due to unavoidable circumstances, pasteurised donated breastmilk from the bank should be considered for hospitalized or preterm babies.

OBJECTIVES: To explore and describe women’s knowledge and attitudes related to established breastmilk bank in Mankweng area.

METHODS: An explorative descriptive contextual qualitative research was conducted. Data was collected using semi-structured, one-on-one interviews at the rural hospital and a rural clinic in Limpopo province. Purposive sampling method was used to select participants of this study. Adherence to criteria for trustworthiness was aimed at ensuring that the findings become credible, transferable, confirmable and dependable. Ethical standards were adhered to in order to protect identity, dignity, rights and welfare of the study participants. Data was analysed using Tesch’s open coding method.

FINDINGS: Women at the hospital have knowledge related to breastmilk bank whilst the ones at the clinic have insufficient knowledge about breastmilk bank. The participants have shown positive attitudes towards donating breastmilk to the bank, whilst on the other hand negative attitudes towards receiving donated breastmilk from the bank were identified due to fears of contracting infections mainly HIV.

CONCLUSION: Women at the clinic, have insufficient knowledge and negative attitudes towards the established breastmilk bank. However, they were more willing to donate rather than to accept donated human milk from the bank. On the other hand, women at the hospital are knowledgeable about the breastmilk bank and they revealed positive attitudes towards the established breastmilk bank. It is recommended that the established breastmilk bank should be well promoted and well publicised to the community members in order to utilise the bank effectively and efficiently.

Abstract:
Aim. To analyze the specifics of comorbidity forming and agerelated correlations of the risk factors (RF) distribution in arterial hypertension (AH) patients living in rural areas.Material and methods. In 20152017 a retrospective analysis of 2500 patients database was done at two general practitioners offices in Konakovsky District of Tverskaya Oblast. Of those, 350 were selected (14%) at the age 4453 (164 males, 186 females) among the charts containing most complete data on the dispanserization. Additionally, surveying of the group was done for more detailed retrospective analysis of comorbidity and RF existence during lifetime of 2535 years.Results. In the structure of comorbidity AH predominates, which has been diagnosed in 50,86% of patients; mostly it is diagnosed at the age 4453 (81,06%). After AH, 2nd place is held by dorsopathies (24%), 3rd — gastrointestinal disorders (12%). For chronic pulmonary obstructive disease and cerebrovascular disease — it is less than 3%. 96,1% of men with AH are smokers at the age 18 to 53 y. o. By the age 53, in 40,26% of men and 36,63% of women there is bodyweight increase; and raised cholesterol — in 48,05% and 22,77%, respectively.Conclusion. In rural areas inhabitants, the formation of comorbidity is ongoing mostly at age 4453 y. o. Of the specifics of comorbidity in these patients, there is often combination of AH with dorsopathies, and quite rare — with chronic obstructive lung disease or cerebrovascular diseases. The observed at the age 3443 “diagnostic gap” points on the necessity for attention to this exact age strata with the aim of ontime diagnostics and early stages of diseases reveal. The structure of RF during the lifetime is not homogenic and is the highest at the age of comorbidity forming (except smoking and professional harms). All the considered RF are more prominent in men than in women.

Abstract:
AbstractThis research responds to calls for studies aimed at developing a more nuanced understanding of women small business owners’ networking behaviours and structures. The study examined whether business start-up motivations and phase of the business (prestart-up, start-up and established) influenced women’s networking behaviours and structures. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 28 women. Interview data were used to categorise participants into classic, forced, and work–family owners. Analysis of the interviews found no marked differences in networking behaviours and network structures of participants during prestart-up phase. During start-up and established phases differences began to emerge. Given that classic and forced owners had established their businesses for financial reasons, a diverse network was more relevant for them. However, work–family participants established the business for family/work balance, thus a small network of close ties was sufficient to achieve their business goals. Theoretical, practical and research implications of the findings are outlined.

Abstract:
As this issue of Screen Bodies went into production, the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was concluding, and Vogue published a short online piece on Hillary Clinton’s sartorial choices for her acceptance speech. While Clinton had often worn brighter, bolder colors and styles for her major appearances, on this evening she donned an ivory suit—a simple canvas against which to continue painting an image of the woman behind the candidacy. At the same time, the Internet continued to disseminate more negative reviews of the rebooted Ghostbusters (2016)—starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, directed by Paul Feig, written by Katie Dippold and Paul Feig. I think the film is (pace Lucille Ball) funny and brave. It hilariously reverses many sexist tropes and assumptions out of mainstream Hollywood films; it is crude and inappropriate in the best of ways; and responses to it—especially patriarchal, masculinist, heteronormative, and racist ones—continue to demonstrate the importance of critical comedic revisions for feminist interruptions of established paradigms.

Abstract:
The ectopic pregnancy frequency is studied by the data of one of the great puerperal houses in Kazan for 19931997. It is established that following the ectopic pregnancy, the pregnancy comes in each fifth woman; among women wishing to give birth, the pregnancy comes in each second one. Hence, in ectopic pregnancy complications of tuboperitoneal sterility in calculations it is necessary to take into account the womans wish to retain reproductive function.

Abstract:
This study examines two American online organizations established as networks of support for Muslim women artists: Muslim Women in the Arts (mwia) and the International Muslimah Artists’ Network (iman). While the broader context is to explore the intersections of three important identity markers, namely, gender (woman), occupation (artist) and religion (Muslim) often overlooked in identity theory (Peek 2005), the more specific aim is to probe the effects of these digital culturescapes on Muslim women’s artistic agency and success. The data collected from interviews with member artists confirm the necessity of such organizations, offer suggestions on how they could be improved and outline the difficulties they face due to their largely volunteer and online nature.
