Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to respond to the circumstances that have made hybridity both a popular term in cultural analysis and a contested, problematic concept. It promotes the need to look at what has been dismissed in discussions of hybridity, namely, mundane and un-exotic examples of cultural mix. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a conceptual and interpretive approach to theoretical and empirical work that engages with the theme of hybridity. Findings The findings highlight how a celebration of hybridity has limited the ways in which the concept can be used for empirical work. It proposes the paradigm of everyday hybridity to work with practical examples of cultural hybridity. Research limitations/implications The implications are to decentre the Western bias that has theorised hybridity without exploring how the concept is relevant to other regions, such as East Asia. Originality/value The value of this work is in providing an audit of the concept of hybridity and a working paradigm for future qualitative research.

Bennia, Fatiha. "Le risque cardiovasculaire : l'environnement de diffusion des facteurs de risque modifiables." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015AIXM5060/document.

Abstract:
Health is a dynamic and multifactor construction which has both an individual and a social dimension. The latter may have a direct or indirect effect on the behaviour of individuals and their life choices. The Framingham study has revealed that cardiovascular risk is multifactorial and, as such, its estimate should be global. However, the assessment of global cardiovascular risk methods do not take into account the living environment of individuals, which would factor the development of modifiable risk factors. Through this work, we highlight the characteristics of the environment of dissemination of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors: metabolic and behavioural. Since decades, the North region of France has, for cardiovascular diseases, a high level of global and premature mortality. We are asked about the determinants of the situation of this region, by comparing it to other French regions and by exploring the link between a high cardiovascular risk and an unfavourable economic situation. Thus, we are interested in the link between the distribution of cardiovascular risk and the distribution of income, using normative criteria based on the concept of expected social dominance in terms of poverty. Shedding a light on factors favouring the occurrence of cardiovascular problems and analyzing the knowledge about the individual’s life environment allows a better understanding of the mechanisms of diffusion of the modifiable risk factors, with a double objective to lower the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and to reduce the social inequalities in health

Abstract:
Research suggests that self-esteem is influential in many aspects of schizophrenia, including symptomatology, experience ofillness, quality of life, and recovery (Barrowclough, et aI, 2003; Freeman, et aI, 1998). However, this field of study has been limited by a number of factors including a lack of longitudinal research, difficulties in interpreting the construct, and problematic measurement techniques (Andrews & Brown 19903). Barrowclough et al. (2003) used an interview-based method ofself-esteem assessment (SESS-sv), which was found to be superior to past measures ofthe construct. Using this measure, Barrowclough and colleagues (2003) found a relationship between negative self-evaluation and positive symptom severity and an inverse relationship between positive self-evaluation and negative symptoms. The general aim ofthe current research is to investigate the relationship of self-esteem to aspects ofpsychopathology in a clinical and a non-clinical sample, using new measures that address past inconsistencies in the self-esteem literature. Method The relationship between self-esteem and psychopathology was assessed in three ways: (1) A follow-up investigation ofBarrowclough and colleagues (2003) study was conducted to address the stability ofself-esteem and its effect on outcomes over time; (2) A new self-report measure of self-evaluation was developed based on an established interview to see if the benefits of the SESS-sv are due to its interview format or to its specific conceptualization ofthe construct; (3) The psychometric properties ofthe measure and its relation~hip to positive and negative symptoms of psychosis were tested in a clinical and a non clinical sample. Results Self-evaluation appeared to be relatively stable at follow-up. Time to relapse was associated with High negative self-evaluation and inversely with High positive selfevaluation. The Questionnaire for Evaluation of Self (QES) was found to be a reliable and valid self-report assessment of self-evaluation. As predicted, negative selfevaluation was strongly associated with positive symptoms ofpsychosis, specifically feelings ofparanoia and persecution. Participants in the clinical sample had greater levels ofnegative self-evaluation than a university sample, but their levels ofpositive self-evaluation were comparable. Discussion/Conclusions This research emphasizes the importance ofrecognising the multi-dimensional nature of self-esteem and its potential long-term impact on outcomes. The QES is a useful new measure of self-evaluation that will be appropriate for use in both research and practice settings, as it provides a more comprehensive assessment of self-evaiuation than traditional self-report measures.

Abstract:
Data from 183 participants were collected through an online survey focusing on the relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem across a specific age range. Parenting styles were assessed using a four-factor model while self-esteem was evaluated using two different scales. Multiple analyses were completed to find that self-esteem changed across the age range, and across parenting styles. The study looks at the ways in which these two variables changed. Implications, limitations and future research opportunities are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of the shame that inheres in not being able to self-admire. I call this incapacity to admire oneself ontological shame, and I argue that it is the source of the masquerades, concealments and negative emotions that surround the pursuit and defence of a self-esteem founded on an impoverished form of pride. I argue that there is a radical asymmetry between our admiration and esteem for others and how we evaluate our own sense of self-worth. Where admiration at its highest pitch is the wonderful agape experience of apprehending preciousness in others, our own sense of self-worth is limited to experiences of pride and other forms of self-affirmation; none of which allow us the joy of seeing ourselves as wonders in the world. Because we can admire and want to be admired, not being able to self-admire amounts to a limitation of a sort which carries with it a primordial resentment against life itself. It is largely how we respond to our ontological limitation and to our resentment that determines the positive or negative manner in which we interact with others, and whether or not we are likely to have an envious or humble disposition. In the first three chapters I lay the groundwork for the main argument of the thesis by highlighting the difficulties self-esteem theorists have in agreeing upon the value of ‘high’ self-esteem, introduce the relation between self-esteem and shame, argue for a distinction between self-esteem and public esteem, and provide an account of the gift-exchange nature of admiration which explains why we cannot self-admire. In the central chapters I focus on shame; on acts of concealment that can be either appropriate covering for, or deceitful denial of our ontological limitation; how self-worth is created through a reconciliation to shame, and why the ‘self-act dissociation’ theories of guilt fail to capture the shame attached to ‘being guilty’ of a wrongdoing. In Chapters Seven and Eight I examine envy, first in how it can be disguised as moral resentment; how it differs to admiration in its role in emulation, and finally how as a disposition it stands in stark contrast to humility. It is in humility that we grasp the benefits associated with our own incapacity to self-admire through our need to interact and exchange gifts with others.

Abstract:
Focusing on the interrelationship between Jacob van Loo's art, honor, and career, this book argues that Van Loo's lifelong success and unblemished reputation were by no means incompatible, as art historians have long assumed, with his specialization in painting nudes and his conviction for manslaughter. Van Loo's iconographic specialty - the nude - allowed his clientele to present themselves as judges of beauty and display their mastery of decorum, while his portraiture perfectly expressed his clients' social and political ambitions. Van Loo's honor explains why his success lasted a lifetime, whereas that of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Vermeer did not. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book reinterprets the manslaughter case as a sign that Van Loo's elite patrons recognized him as a gentleman and highly-esteemed artist.

Abstract:
Harry Parkes was at the heart of Britain’s relations with the Far East from the start of his working life at fourteen, to his death at fifty-seven. Orphaned at the age of five, he went to China on his own as a child and worked his way to the top. God-fearing and fearless, he believed his mission was to bring trade and ‘civilisation’ to East Asia. In his day, he was seen as both a hero and a monster and is still bitterly resented in China for his part in the country’s humiliations at Western hands, but largely esteemed in Japan for helping it to industrialise. Morton’s new biography, the first in over thirty years, and benefiting in part from access to the Parkes’ family and archives, offers a more intimate and informed profile of the personal and professional life of a Victorian titan and one of Britain’s most undiplomatic diplomats in the history of the British Civil Service.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the interaction between nanoparticles in buoyancy-driven flow. The nanoparticles suspended in a base liquid are driven to stochastic motion by rapidly fluctuating forces, this phenomenon is termed as 'thermal dispersion' resulting from the dissociation of the ambient solvent molecules taking place within the mixture. Such thermal dispersion is esteemed to play an aggressive role in the increase of energy exchange rates in the fluid. Under the influence of these forces, the suspended nanoparticles may experience interparticle collision and attachment of the colliding particles and form aggregates. The theme of the present work is to understand the thermal transport phenomena of buoyancy-driven nanoparticles as well as to analyze the enhancement mechanism of energy transport from the nanoparticles. By considering physical properties of both the base fluid and the nanoparticles, as well as the structure of the nanoparticles and aggregates, a mathematical model has been developed to predict the axial velocity and temperature of both the fluid and the nanoparticle arbitrarily moving inside the system. The model proposed is a two-equation model, one for the fluid and the other for the nanoparticles, which are later combined together to form a non-homogeneous equation in x- and y-direction respectively. The solutions to these equations are presented in this work.

Abstract:
Chinese calligraphy is a popular, highly esteemed art form in the Chinese cultural sphere and worldwide. Ink brushes are the traditional writing tool for Chinese calligraphy and the subtle nuances of brush movements have a great impact on the aesthetics of the written characters. However, mastering the brush movement is a challenging task for many calligraphy learners as it requires many years’ practice and expert supervision. This paper presents a novel approach to help Chinese calligraphy learners to quantify the quality of brush movements without expert involvement. Our approach extracts the brush trajectories from a video stream; it then compares them with example templates of reputed calligraphers to produce a score for the writing quality. We achieve this by first developing a novel neural network to extract the spatial and temporal movement features from the video stream. We then employ methods developed in the computer vision and signal processing domains to track the brush movement trajectory and calculate the score. We conducted extensive experiments and user studies to evaluate our approach. Experimental results show that our approach is highly accurate in identifying brush movements, yielding an average accuracy of 90%, and the generated score is within 3% of errors when compared to the one given by human experts.

Abstract:
One Thousand and One Nights, which can be traced back to as early as the 9th century, is probably the greatest introduction to Arabic culture through literature. This colossal and diverse book has drawn the attention of scholars, researchers and students to classic Arabic literature as well as influenced many prominent authors and filmmakers. It is not just a book of careless and unconnected stories but rather a piece of esteemed literature which has been read and analysed in many countries all over the world. However, it is also true that this book has been criticised for its sexual promiscuity and degraded portrayal of women. The aim of the presentation is to prove that underneath the clumsy and seemingly funny structures of One Thousand and One Nights, there is a description of overflowing sexuality. Through the sexualised or erotic description of female bodies, the book gives agency to women but at the same time depicts them derogatively, and thus fulfils the naked desire of the then patriarchal society. The presentation will highlight how sexual promiscuity or fathomless female sexual craving is portrayed through figurative and grammatical language, which objectifies the female characters but at the same time enables them to be playful with the male characters, and thus motivates them to become more powerful than the males. Finally. the presentation will focus on language or narrative as an act of survival from the perspectives of the female characters, which is most evident in the case of Scheherazade who saved not only her life but also lives of countless maidens by her mesmerizing storytelling talent.

Abstract:
Islam has been very influential in shaping societal developments in the Malay world. Such an influence manifests in various aspects of their lives, one of which can be clearly seen in several influential works carried out by Malay intellectuals in a number of fields. Old Malay manuscripts that deal with many Islamic aspects of knowledge has become a great legacy left by esteemed Malay religious scholars and intellectuals that serves as a testimony of the spread of Islam to the Malay world. Against such a backdrop, this study was carried out to examine the positive (good) and negative (bad) signs associated with Islamic months that helped Malays decide the appropriate months in which houses should be built. The study was based on a mixed-method approach based on a quantitative method and a qualitative method to help yield empirically reliable findings. The corpus-based analysis was the main analysis used by focusing on significant lexical values and concordant synthesis to highlight the good and bad signs associated with Islamic months. The researchers selected five (5) manuscripts that belonged to a corpus called Petua Membina Rumah. The analysis showed 50% of the Islamic months had negative signs while 42% of such months had positive signs. The remaining 8% had a mix of positive and negative signs. In addition, there were some instances involving a combination of positive and negative signs. Such occurrences provide an interesting view of the impact of signs on the Malay society, especially on its civilization. These significant findings highlight not only the Islamic months deemed suitable for building houses but also the thinking of Malay scholars in shaping the civilization of the Malay world.

In ASME 2016 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2016-63682.

Abstract:
Seismic analysis and design of high-hazard nuclear facilities requires evaluation of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects on structure and soil response due to earthquake ground motions. The industry-wide methodology of computing SSI response of buildings is through linear SSI techniques using the computer code SASSI. Technical issues were identified by users and regulators (Ref. 1) resulting in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) commissioning a large scale, multi-year Validation and Verification (V&V) Project for SASSI (Ref. 2). The project was a highly peer reviewed process that included an esteemed Participatory Peer Review Team, DOE oversight, as well as regulatory and stakeholder input. The project goal was to develop benchmark SSI solutions for the range of SSI problems associated with high-hazard facilities within the DOE complex. As per industry software quality control requirements, an acceptance limit for the benchmark solutions must be provided to define the acceptable accuracy of the results produced by SASSI relative to the benchmark. In order to define this limit, variation in the solution of foundation impedance must be related to an expected level of accuracy in structural design quantities of interest (e.g., response spectra, base shear, etc.). Therefore, extensive parametric analyses were performed for coupled soil-structure systems having a broad range of SSI parameters defined by foundation size, soil properties, building stiffness and mass properties, building height, etc. Based on the results of the parametric analyses, ASCE 4 code guidance, and engineering judgment of CJC&A and the peer review team, an acceptable level of accuracy in computed foundation impedance was determined for SASSI solutions. This supported the successful qualification of SASSI for use in two large-scale DOE projects.

Abstract:
This article discusses the development of self-esteem in primary school age, its changes and factors of self-esteem in students from the first to fourth grades. The article gives the concept of self-esteem. The authors note that the primary school teacher should take into account the psychological, individual and differentiated approach to learning. Self-assessment of a junior schoolchild is an unstable phenomenon and becomes differentiated. This is manifested in the emergence of the emotional orientation of the general self-esteem and the child's ability to self-assess.

Abstract:
The paper interprets and explores two main constructs: “self-esteem” and “motivation for affiliation”. They are placed in the field of psychology of youth, the subjects are students of humanities. The study was conducted at Southwestern University “Neofit Rilski”, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. The aim of the study is to reveal the relationship between self-esteem and motivation for affiliation, as they are compared in students majoring in psychology with students majoring in pedagogy and speech therapy. Self-esteem is the core of personality, experiences and behavior. It is important for interactions in young people. The need to belong to the group (affiliation) is a prerequisite for self-knowledge and satisfies a number of basic needs. Using a standardized self-assessment test and Albert Mehrabian’s affiliation test, we track how the level of self-assessment determines affiliation needs. These: 1. Students with average and above average level of self-esteem have a higher motivation for affiliation, compared to students with low and very high level of self-esteem. 2. We assume that there will be statistically significant differences in the manifestations of the two constructs in students from the specialty of Psychology and other students from the humanities. We expect that psychology students will have average and above average levels of self-esteem, which will affect their motivation for affiliation, compared to students from the other group. The results of the research provide information about the personal development of students in the humanities, which could be used by university professors in order to optimize the learning process and create conditions for full inclusion of students in university life.
