Noorman, Judith. Art, Honor and Success in The Dutch Republic. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462987982.

Full text
Abstract:
Focusing on the interrelationship between Jacob van Loo's art, honor, and career, this book argues that Van Loo's lifelong success and unblemished reputation were by no means incompatible, as art historians have long assumed, with his specialization in painting nudes and his conviction for manslaughter. Van Loo's iconographic specialty - the nude - allowed his clientele to present themselves as judges of beauty and display their mastery of decorum, while his portraiture perfectly expressed his clients' social and political ambitions. Van Loo's honor explains why his success lasted a lifetime, whereas that of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Vermeer did not. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book reinterprets the manslaughter case as a sign that Van Loo's elite patrons recognized him as a gentleman and highly-esteemed artist.

Morton, Robert. A Life of Sir Harry Parkes. GB Folkestone: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9781912961160.

Full text
Abstract:
Harry Parkes was at the heart of Britain’s relations with the Far East from the start of his working life at fourteen, to his death at fifty-seven. Orphaned at the age of five, he went to China on his own as a child and worked his way to the top. God-fearing and fearless, he believed his mission was to bring trade and ‘civilisation’ to East Asia. In his day, he was seen as both a hero and a monster and is still bitterly resented in China for his part in the country’s humiliations at Western hands, but largely esteemed in Japan for helping it to industrialise. Morton’s new biography, the first in over thirty years, and benefiting in part from access to the Parkes’ family and archives, offers a more intimate and informed profile of the personal and professional life of a Victorian titan and one of Britain’s most undiplomatic diplomats in the history of the British Civil Service.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes the development of Transparency International (TI) through the remarkable story of the transformation of the personal idea of its founder, Peter Eigen, and its esteemed recognition as one of the world’s most influential NGOs. Peter Eigen founded TI in May 1993 after two decades at the World Bank, in response to his frustration over the refusal of the World Bank to take action against corruption. The discussion includes a description of the central ideas on which TI was founded, the initial resistance to the use of transparency in its name, and the strategic choice of a headquarters that would not be linked to the United States.

Collier, Jay T. The Church of England, Sources of Identity, and Theological Distinctives. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190858520.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the influence of the early church and the consensus of the Reformed churches upon the identity of the Church of England. It shows that these two sources of identity have been set against each other in modern scholarship rather than investigated to see how they interacted. This chapter first notes the perseverance of the saints as the most distinctive doctrine for the Reformed tradition and how Augustine was esteemed as the preeminent church father. Then the chapter proposes to survey several debates involving competing readings of Augustine on perseverance in order to see what contributions they make to the discussion on the identity of the Church of England.

Fox, Alistair. Family Secrets and their Destructive Consequences: In My Father’s Den (Brad McGann, 2004). Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474429443.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyses Brad McGann’s highly esteemed adaptation (2004) of Maurice Gee’s novel In My Father’s Den (1972) as evidence of a prevailing trend in New Zealand coming-of-age films whereby the vision of a source work is regularly updated to reflect the different values and perspectives of a later generation. In this case, the updating involves a shift of emphasis from the destructive effects on children of puritan religiosity and repressiveness to those of lack of communication among family members, combined with the preservation of unspoken, but collectively known, family secrets, reflecting historical changes that had occurred in New Zealand society since the generation of Gee (born 1931) and that of McGann (born 1964).

Abstract:
An instant landmark on its publication, this book remains the essential introduction to this vital area of research. Written by one of the world's most esteemed theoretical cosmologists, it provides an invaluable historical introduction to the subject, and an enduring overview of key methods, statistical measures, and techniques for dealing with cosmic evolution. With characteristic clarity and insight, the author focuses on the largest known structures — galaxy clusters — weighing the empirical evidence of the nature of clustering and the theories of how it evolves in an expanding universe. A must-have reference for students and researchers alike, this edition introduces a new generation of readers to a classic text in modern cosmology.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an introduction to Sinhala Buddhist music-making, focusing on the domain of drumming in religious ritual. These genres, with their accompanying dances, have become the most esteemed traditional music genres in Sri Lanka. The chapter also considers the ways that nationalism has influenced the use and placement of these genres, discussing a riot that broke out when Sinhala students agitated for Sinhala drumming to be performed at the head of a graduation ceremony at the Tamil-dominated University of Jaffna. The chapter provides basic information on drumming for the caste of drummers, dancers, and ritualists called the Beravā, and discusses the life and work of my drum teacher, a performer of the low-country Sinhala drum (pahata rata beraya, yak beraya).

Abstract:
John Woolman’s writings demonstrate a strong conceptual and theological coherence. This chapter describes the theological flexibility available to colonists and, especially, Quakers. Woolman was an esteemed member of his religious community, while disagreeing at times with both the reasons and the methods for their religious expression. It defines theology in a Quaker context, including a discussion of the “Quietist” category that has been applied to Woolman and skewed scholarly interpretations of his writings. Additionally, this chapter defines apocalypticism broadly to account for the variety of apocalyptic sentiments. Other approaches to Woolman and eighteenth-century Quakers, such as those by Kathryn Damiano, Geoffrey Plank, and Rufus Jones, are evaluated. The structure of the book is then explained, giving an overview of its contents.

Abstract:
Social class or ethnicity in a given religion, as much as gender, can be the factor which inhibits or permits the release of religious emotion. Accordingly, whether or not women and men's emotional expression is either esteemed or denigrated by their religious communities is multiply determined. This essay argues that male-dominated religions tend to regulate, transcend, and thereby “masculinize” emotion by its accommodation in the sublime: in the narrative, ritual, dogmatic, and ethical scheme articulated by, and primarily for, men. Where emotion cannot be thus accommodated, male religious discourse often reduces “natural,”, “private” emotion to a function of sexual desire. This essay also discusses subversion, power, and female religious emotion. It concludes with a brief account of the religious feminist reclamation of the spiritually and politically transformative power of religious emotion.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents the results of qualitative analysis, using NVivo software (version 10), of the responses of fifty-one philosophers of religion to the question “What is philosophy of religion?” posted at PhilosophyOfReligion.org. The core finding is that various differences of perspective within the field are correlated with whether or not the institution where a philosopher teaches is secular or requires a statement of religious faith. Beyond identifying this fault line running through the field, the chapter presents a complex portrait of contemporary North American philosophy of religion, including the diverse conceptions of the field that philosophers adhere to, how the field is understood to relate to religious studies and theology, which figures are esteemed as exemplary, what issues are most controversial, and what sort of programmatic visions for the future of philosophy of religion are presently being advocated.
