Full textThe aim of the present research is to analyze the image of the Chinese in Latin American literature in the 21st century. It’s a novel topic which is little studied until now. The innovation of this research is not taking the country of China or its culture as the object, but the image of Chinese subjects or individuals. It is intended, on the one hand, to analyze the representation of the Chinese profiles and, on the other hand, to summarize the similarities and differences among the images of the characters, as well as the function and possible reason of such images. To achieve this objective, we have chosen six works in our corpus and divided them into two classes: that of the Chinese perceived by another subject from within or outside the Chinese culture. In the end, a preliminary reflection is added, prior to the final conclusions, to present three recent works, with which we extend the corpus to the present year, just before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in China. In the present thesis, we have introduced several theories: orientalism, imagology and stereotype, the last two are rarely used to study such topics. And some relatively new concepts are also included in the analysis, such as, the concept of auto-orientalism and the idea of Michel Foucault's heterotopia. The research shows that there still is a great number of orientalist stereotypes about the Chinese in Latin American literature. We believe that some writers create an oriental world, and the repeated stereotypical characteristics of Chinese characters demonstrate their orientalist strategies to attract and satisfy the values of Latin American readers. On the other hand, some writers, by exaggerating the caricatured image of the Chinese or directly exposing the prejudices about them, reduce or mock, to a certain extent, the stereotypes. But the most important thing is to reveal the problems of their own society: as the imagology indicates, the reflection on oneself is often carried out from the description of the Other.

Full textThis research is part of the condition of women in sports that does not correspond to their traditional gender role. Therefore, it has been proposed as the objective, understand the motivation to practice a sport such as rugby and the role of stereotypes and self-perceptions in this decision-making process. For this purpose, a qualitative research was conducted, with a hermeneutical phenomenological analysis design, through which it was sought to understand what this experience meant for them. We interviewed 11 women, members and former members of Rugby teams in Lima Metropolitana. The results showed that sociocultural, cognitive and motivational factors intervene in the decision to start, maintain and give up this sport. It was found that all of them, from childhood, received discouraging comments and disapproval of their behaviors and preferences that broke with those that is traditionally associated with feminine. Also, making the decision to practice a "masculine" sport has meant going through a personal process of questioning what is feminine. However, getting involved in rugby has involved finding an identification group, getting to know and accepting more of them. Even, this has involved responding to episodes of gender inequality by the immediate environment, acquiring coping strategies and positively impacting their personality and context. Thus, it was found that in some cases achievement predominated over the maintenance of the roles of gender.

Full textThe objective of the present study was to discover if there is a relationship between stereotypes of gender roles and attitudes towards women in leadership positions in a group of women workers of two organizations in Metropolitan Lima (N = 260). To this end, the three vignettes that make up the Scale to measure Attitudes towards Women in Leadership Positions and the Sexual Roles Stereotypes Scale (SRSS) were applied. The results show that there is no relationship between attitudes towards women in a leadership position and stereotypes of gender roles. Also, it was observed that women leaders who present communal attributes and mixed attributes when exercising their role receive positive attitudes and there is greater acceptance of them, in comparation whit women who have only agnostic attributes, who trigger neutral attitudes. Additionally, no differences were observed in attitudes towards women leaders, according to the organizational category of the study participants. Finally, there were no differences between the stereotypes of gender roles that were assigned to women and men in leadership positions.

Full textThis research aims to explore the relation between the culture of honor, codes of honor and gender stereotypes in peruvian men. To acomplish this purpose, the research follows a quantitative methodology, in which 103 men from Lima and provinces participated. The results suggest that higher scores in the culture of honor and its dimensions, presents a positive correlation with higher scores in the codes of honor and gender stereotypes (masculinity and femininity), which could be related to the legitimization of violence as a mean for the defense of honor and the fulfillment of gender stereotypes imposed on society. Finally, considering, the sociodemographic variables analyzed, results shows the existence of differences regarding the age of the participants.

Full textThe present study aims to verify the relationship between gender stereotypes and Athletic Identity (AI) in male and female university athletes from a private university in Metropolitan Lima. The sample is made up of 175 students from different disciplines and sports levels, who described a male athlete, a female athlete and a sports person. For this, the Sex Roles Stereotype Scale (Raguz, 1991) was used; and to measure AI, the Spanish adaptation of the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale-E (Peiró-Velert, Valencia-Peris, Fos-Ros and DevísDevís, 2016) was applied. The results showed that the sports field is still predominantly masculine, even if the same conditions of competition are maintained. Thus, the greater the identification as an athlete, the greater the assignment of masculine characteristics, regardless of sex. Finally, rather than age or sex, it is observed that the level of sports competition is the variable that would most alter the identification with the role of athlete and the assignment of male traits to this role.
