Summer, Saralyn Ellen. ""Like Another Esther": Literary Representations of Queen Esther in Early Modern England." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2006. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/3.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the significance of Queen Esther in early modern England by examining her literary representations in light of historical, religious, political, and social contexts. Although she is often linked to Deborah and Judith, Esther’s multifaceted character allows for greater flexibility in representation than is the case with other biblical heroines. The differing aspects of her character – obedient orphan, beautiful virgin, clever and courageous queen, savior of Diaspora Jews – inspire multiple, at times even contradictory, depictions of Esther in early modern literature. Whether Protestant or Catholic, male or female, Queen or commoner, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English writers appropriate Esther in ways that paradoxically challenge and support women’s traditional roles in society. Chapter One introduces the Esther narrative as presented in the Old Testament and Apocrypha. Chapter Two examines Esther in relation to female authority, focusing specifically on references to Queen Elizabeth as an Esther figure. Chapter Three studies the dramatic interlude Godly Queen Hester, while Chapter Four analyzes works of prose featuring Esther as an exemplum for virtuous and heroic women. Chapter Five studies poetic depictions of Esther, and Chapter Six concludes the study by noting briefly how women authors engaged in the querelle des femmes enlist Esther to refute their opponents.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study aims to compare the figures of Moses in the Exodus narratives and Queen Esther in the Esther narratives. The study will proceed to argue that Esther, a remarkable Jewish deliverer figure in the Persian period can be viewed as a reinterpretation of the Moses figure in the Exodus narratives. Within a broad analysis of these narratives, the researcher investigates how Esther fits into the Old Testament deliverance motifs. Commonalities between Moses and Esther and their parallels and characterization as Old Testament deliverer figures assist in drawing a comparative analysis between the two. The study proceeds to prove that Esther is a new Moses figure, arguing that the Esther narratives are presented deliberately in such a way that they reinterpret the Moses narratives. A survey of previous studies that investigated the two narratives provides further evidence for the view that the Esther narratives are reinterpreting the Moses narratives, and hence that Esther can be regarded as a new Moses in the Old Testament deliverance motifs. This study argues that Esther stands within the same category of Old Testament deliverer figures like Moses and that female figures like Esther are not ignored in the deliverance of God’s people. The concluding part of this study investigates what implications the Old Testament narratives of Moses and Esther as deliverer figures may have for the modern-day context of African leadership. The focus is on investigating whether biblical models of leadership and deliverance offer anything to the discourse on African leadership. In the last section, the models of Moses and Esther are applied to modern-day ethical problems of leadership in African societies. It is postulated that Old Testament ethical reflections on biblical characters such as Moses and Esther may inform modern-day reflection on responsible leadership.

Memmott, William R. "Oratorio: Esther - "For Such a Time As This"." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2016. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2171.

Full text
Abstract:
This oratorio tells the story of Queen Esther as presented in the Old Testament Book of Esther. Its format includes choruses and solos with an orchestral accompaniment. The main characters in the story are Esther, King Xerxes, Esther’s uncle Mordecai and their antagonist Haman, with occasional insertions by a narrator. In addition to the primary scripture used, there are several inclusions from the Psalms, Song of Songs, and a commentary poem by Wayne Watson highlighting the oratorio’s sub-title, “For Such a Time as This,” which is the overriding textural theme. The orchestration focuses on reed woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion, including consistent use of the Persian tanbak (bongo type drum). Rhythms are regularly freely used to support the text. Dissonant melodic construction and its resulting harmonic dissonance present a panoply of sound beyond the traditional classical approach of dominant/tonic tonality.

Wilkins, Katrina M. "Characterization in Ælfric's Esther : a cognitive stylistic examination." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2018. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/52051/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines characterization in Ælfric’s Old English version of the biblical book of Esther, from the perspective of cognitive stylistics. This area of study uses concepts and methods from linguistics in order to better understand both how literature works and how language works. The study investigates explicit characterization cues, discourse presentation, semantic fields, and deixis to illuminate how Ælfric’s careful linguistic choices construct characters that remain true to their biblical exempla, make sense to his Anglo-Saxon audience, and underscore the doctrinal themes of the narrative. Chapter 1 describes the textual history of Esther, from its origins to its reception in the early Middle Ages. This is followed by a discussion of the history of Ælfric’s version of the story and its treatment by scholars in the modern era. Chapter 2 outlines my methodology, based in cognitive stylistics, which draws on concepts from cognitive science and related fields to understand what happens in the reader’s mind during reading. In addition, I occasionally draw on corpus stylistics methods, and this is also described. The results and discussion of this analysis form the bulk of Chapters 3 through 6. Chapter 3 focuses on explicit cues, those things that directly describe a character’s personality traits. Speech, thought, and writing presentation are the focus of Chapter 4, which examines how these modes of discourse are presented and how this presentation contributes to the characterization. In Chapter 5 I examine two semantic fields of particular importance in this text: emotions and food. Finally, Chapter 6 addresses two aspects of deixis: relational deixis and Deictic Shift Theory. Although, in all chapters, the analysis primarily focuses on the five main characters (Ahasuerus, Esther, Vashti, Mordecai, and Haman), other apposite characters are also discussed, including the Jews, the Persians, God, and even Ælfric. This kind of cognitive stylistic analysis of Old English and other historical literature is doubly useful. First, it offers new and valuable insights into this literature. The present study, for example, notes minute linguistic details that offer significant characterization cues and also explains the peculiar sense of many Anglo-Saxonists (and other historians) that they know very well people whom they have never met. Second, such examination demonstrates that the chosen methods are robust enough to cope with literature much older than that normally engaged in modern stylistic studies. This not only verifies the utility of the methods, but also attests to the universal nature of their underlying principles.

Dobianer, Nicole S. "Auto-fiction and identity in Esther Tusquets' trilogy." Thesis, University of Kent, 2013. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/55458/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates personal development and identity formation in Esther Tusquets and the female protagonists in her trilogy, composed of El mismo mar de todos los veranos (EMM) (1978), El amor es un juego solitario (AJS) (1979) and Varada tras el último naufragio (VUN) (1980). Recent autobiographic publications had made it possible to shed light on the author behind the literature and had provided indications that supported a hypothesis of life influencing literature. This thesis approaches the question of identity formation primarily through the female protagonists in the trilogy. Their emotional and sexual development, analysed in Chapter 2 and 3, is seen as indicatory of a similar developmental path taken by Tusquets. Chapter 2 and 3 therefore focus on the protagonists’ identity development in emotional and sexual terms and elicit further parallels that exist between the literary plot and the author’s life by complementing the analysis with a conceptual background on autobiography, auto-fiction and psychoanalysis in women’s development. The backdrop of auto-fiction suggested that textual analysis of Tusquets’ autobiographic literature should also allow for a margin of scepticism regarding the reliability of its content. The conclusions derived from Chapters 2 and 3, were seen as paramount because they allowed for putting the later analysis of the author on issues, such as love, sex, motherhood, career, solidarity, individuality and independence, into context. The objective of Chapter 4 was to extract Tusquets’ perspective on womanhood and identity put forward in the trilogy. To do so, her definition of femininity, evidenced by her autobiographic works and her novels, was analysed against the backdrop of patriarchal history, thought and theory provided by Marilyn French, Kate Millett and Gerda Lerner. All this led to a conclusive portrait about Esther Tusquets’, her identity and development in regards to womanhood, as well as, a renewed analysis of her protagonists and their identity formation process.

Fountain, Allison Kay. "Literary and empirical readings of the books of Esther." Thesis, University of Auckland, 1999. http://wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations/fullcit/9943764.

Full text
Abstract:
This project involved a close literary analysis of the three texts of Esther. The results of the literary analysis indicated that the texts displayed different textual tendencies and also represented God, the four main characters, and some minor characters, differently. The texts were then presented to real readers for an empirical study of their perceptions of the characters. The empirical data indicate some support for the difference in perception expected from the literary analysis. Readers of the AT considered the king to be more just, Mordecai to be more just and moral, and less dominant, and Esther to be more moral, than in the other two texts. Readers of the BT considered Mordecai more dominant than in the other two texts. For the justice of the king and the justice and morality of Mordecai they rated the BT between the AT and the MT. Readers of the MT considered the king to be less just and Mordecai to be less just and moral than in the other texts. However, for the dominance trait they rated Mordecai between the AT and BT. They also rated Esther between the AT and BT on the morality trait. Some of these effects, however, were modified by the factors of gender and religious affiliation. The literary analysis also suggested that there is a difference in the moral reasoning level between the three texts. This was indirectly supported by the empirical study. The fact that all except one of the differences in perception were related to the character traits of justice and morality indicates that the character traits which are most obviously related to the ethics involved in the text were the ones for which real readers perceived differences.

Abstract:
The thesis is composed by three parts. The first contains a state of the art of the Jewish and Christians researches about Esther. The second part consist of the analysis of the biblical sources - Bible of the LXX, Vulgate, Targumim -, of the post-biblical sources - Flavius Josephus, Midrashim and Josippon -, and a chapter about the book of Esther in the Christian and Jewish exegesis. The third part develops the historical and iconographical themes. The historical background is focused on the phenomenon of the Marranos, that may be considered as the cause and the effect of the presence of Jewish and Christian elements in the same image. The iconographical study is focused on a certain number of cycles ; it faces the problems of interpretation of the story of Esther and analyses its symbolical values. It is completed by a specific analysis of a French cycle, drawn by Antoine Caron and engraved by Denis de Mathonière (1572-1582). The work is completed by an ample bibliography, a series of representative images and two annexes containing a comparative file of the chosen cycles and a series of iconographical datas

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis takes a metacritical VIew of the application of feminist methodology to the fictional writing of Rosa Montero and Esther Tusquets. It places this in the context of current debates concerning the relationship between aesthetics and ideology in readings of literature, drawing on theories of both feminist and democratic aesthetics. Whilst I take the view that the appropriation of the authors' work as feminist is problematic, it is not my concern either to deny its gender-political content or to critique its gender-political stance. Instead, I contend that critical associations between feminism and form have been limiting, relying too strongly on an idiom of subversion, and creating homologies between social and narrative structures. I therefore argue that a different kind of attention to form and language is necessary. Outlining an individual 'aesthetic' for each writer, I aim to describe the 'perceptual values' (Wellek and Warren 1956: 34) according to which political and formal concerns are brought together in the authors' writing. This not only allows for a more nuanced reading of the ways in which politics inhere in their texts, but generates a more democratic understanding of the ways in which gender-political writing inheres in the social and political realm.

Fausett, L. Clayton. "Evidence for a Typology of Christ in the Book of Esther." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8654.

Full text
Abstract:
Initially the Esther text was disputed and discarded by the early Church fathers. More recently in the 20th and 21st centuries Christian scholarship has dramatized, distorted, culturalized, feminized, or even politicized it. Indeed, the book has scarcely been defined as divine or devotional. While it has received condemnation from scholars, theologians like Martin Luther concluded that it would be best eliminated from the canon altogether. This thesis seeks to bring the text of Esther back into consideration for valid Christological interpretation by presenting evidence of a typology of Christ as exhibited in God's plan of salvation. In making such an assessment, this thesis presents a lexically-based evaluation from the Hebrew content of various words and phrases from the text, as well as within the larger biblical text. Determining their meaning and usage will serve to elucidate whether the text strategically incorporates Christological connections evidencing of this claim. I consider and apply a popular typologically related assessment of figurative language and symbolism, which also provides diagnostic criteria for typologies. This research thus entails a broad and varied examination of the figurative language and diverse use of symbolism including allusion, intertextual referencing, narrative sequencing, and rhetorical devices among others. Consequently, this broadly-based analysis provides a rich array of evidence that supports a valid typology for Christ in His various roles including His messianic kingship within God's plan of salvation for mankind, as well as other key concepts within God's plan, or associated roles, for example that of Satan.

Wetzel, Thomas A. "Violence and the Survival of Israel in the Book of Esther." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:22801840.

Full text
Abstract:
The book of Esther stands in a complex relationship to the Christian tradition. Accepted as canonical by ancient Israel, Judaism, and Christianity, the book nonetheless is known in the Church not for its powerful narrative of Jewish deliverance, but rather for the ways in which Christian interpreters have rejected the narrative as too violent and too “Jewish” to be normative in any way for Christians. Reading the Hebrew version of the Esther story preserved in the Masoretic Text, one at first notices the story’s complete lack of overt references to Israel, Torah, or even the God of Israel, suggesting to many gentiles throughout Christian history that it is not a religious narrative, but rather a story of Jewish nationalism “gone mad” in a willful excess of ethnic violence, as one interpreter has described it. Reading the narrative with attention to the myriad of canonical allusions contained within the story, however, the interpreter will recognize that the God of Israel is indeed present in the Esther story, manifest precisely in the perduring presence of his covenantal partners, the Jews. This reading of the narrative is made apparent in the Septuagint versions of the Esther story, which display their religious sensibilities overtly. But this reading is also evident in the Masoretic Text, seen first in the victory of Esther and Mordecai over Haman. This victory both represents and embodies the Jewish victory over Amalek, the cosmic opponent whose existence throughout history has continually challenged and undermined the divine order in creation. The reader then sees that Israel is present in the Esther story in the zeraʻ hayyĕhûdîm, the seed of the Jews who (perhaps even unknowingly) enact a real and efficacious form of liturgical memory in their fasting, penitence, and military action. Despite the characters’ (and the narrative’s) religious silence, the portrayal of Jewish victory in the Esther story challenges the Church to rethink its understanding of salvation history, as well as the Church’s place in the biblical understanding of God’s covenant with Israel and the divine order of creation.

Abstract:
The thesis is focused on the first three novels of Esther Tusquets: El mismo mar de todos los veranos (1978), El amor es un juego solitario (1979) and Varada tras el ultimo naufragio (1980).
It is inspired by the central theme of the three novels--the Spanish middle-class woman's search for identity--and it aims at showing that the female protagonists' search for identity and their failure in the process is inextricably linked with General Franco's dictatorial policy of imposing traditional norms and values on the Spanish people between 1939-1975.
The introduction summarizes the novels, explains the objectives of the thesis and looks at some critique of Tusquets' novels. Chapter one provides the socio-historical setting of the novels. It highlights details of the Civil Code and Francoist law and propaganda and their influence on women's identity and male/female relations.
Chapter two analyses the depersonalized condition of the protagonists and the third chapter takes a look at an attempt to redeem the women's identity. Chapter four examines the protagonists' failure and it is followed by a brief section of conclusions.

Abstract:
Today in 2015 the game industry grows and games become more advanced. This leads to that the ways interactive media such as games portray their narrative are also improving. Therefore we chose to examine what factors affected how five experienced gamers viewed the narrative in the game Dear Esther (The Chinese Room, 2012) the first time they played it. The investigation used stimulated recall in order to collect data and the data were analysed with the help of the EPP methodology. Our study showed there was a diversity in how the game’s narrative was perceived and that a number of factors affected the interpretations of the narrative. These factors were organised in four categories: exploration, feeling and atmosphere, player experience, and identification with the player character and theories around the narrative. A fifth category evaluation of the storytelling, described the player’s thoughts about the way the narrative was told. Our main conclusion was that the factors affecting the way players perceived the narrative of the game varied much depending on who played the game and what their regular experience of games were. For example some were more affected by environment and monologue while others was more affected by earlier experiences of how games used to work. The respondent’s perception of the game narrative were also affected by their own thoughts and theories around the narrative and what might have happened. We could also see there were several different thoughts and opinions on how the narrative style of the game worked and three participants thought it worked well.

Thambyrajah, Jonathan Arulnathan. "Loanwords in Biblical Literature: Rhetorical Studies in Esther, Daniel, Ezra, and Exodus." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20026.

Full text
Abstract:
Loanwords in Biblical Literature have been studied extensively from etymological and lexicographic perspectives—the purpose of loanword study has been to identify them, elucidate their origins, elaborate on international contact and to utilise them for the dating of texts. However, we do not access the loanwords of the Hebrew Bible without context; because the Hebrew Bible consists of literary texts, it is necessary to consider loanwords not only as data but as rhetorical elements of the literary texts of which they are a part. Because of the potential of a loanword to carry associations with its culture of origin, such words are ideal rhetorical tools for shaping a text’s audience’s view of the nations around them and their own nation. This thesis focuses especially on this phenomenon in the court tales in Esther and Daniel, the correspondence in the Hebrew and Aramaic sections of Ezra 1–7, and the accounts of building the tabernacle in Exodus.
