Abstract:
This thesis explains to statisticians what graphical models are and how to use them for statistical inference; in particular, how to use decomposable graphical models for efficient inference in covariance selection and multivariate regression problems. The first aim of the thesis is to show that decomposable graphical models are worth using within a Bayesian framework. The second aim is to make the techniques of graphical models fully accessible to statisticians. To achieve these aims the thesis makes a number of statistical contributions. First, it proposes a new prior for decomposable graphs

The widespread use of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models has long been underrepresented in the statistical literature. The most common methods for estimating parameters from ODE models are nonlinear least squares and an MCMC based method. Both of these methods depend on a likelihood involving the numerical solution to the ODE. The challenge faced by these methods is parameter spaces that are difficult to navigate, exacerbated by the wide variety of behaviours that a single ODE model can produce with respect to small changes in parameter values.<br>In this work, two competing methods,

Multi-object filtering essentially concerns the joint detection and estimation of the unknown and time-varying number of objects present, and the dynamic state of each of these objects, given a sequence of observation sets. This problem is intrinsically challenging because, given an observation set, there is no knowledge of which object generated which measurement, if any, and the detected measurements are indistinguishable from false ala
