Rech, Eduardo. "Sounds of consumption : the influence of nonmusical sounds on services and retail settings." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/178398.
Full textPrevious literature shows that sensory stimulation, such as pictures and scents, can affect consumers’ choices in a retail setting. Visual stimulation (i.e., pictures of fruit), for example, make people choose more healthy foods, especially when they are hungry (Forwood, Ahern, Hollands, Ng, & Marteau, 2015). Following the same logic, sound might also trigger consumers’ choices and perceptions, meaning that specific products are expected to be chosen more frequently when congruent sounds are played. However, the extant literature has paid little attention to this role of sound. This work therefore focuses on auxiliary sounds (nonmusical) in the shopping environment, especially those intentionally set using audio systems to improve and compose the experiential shopping environment. More specifically, this research investigates whether auxiliary sounds influence people’s choice, decisions, and perceptions through the semantic properties (meanings) of sounds. Five studies were conducted to investigate these effects of auxiliary sounds; the first is a field experiment and the other four are lab studies. The field study showed exploratory results on the effect of auxiliary sounds on people’s choice behavior The first lab study (Study 1) considered a service context choice, where sounds were set in the “soundscape” of a fictitious travel agency. When city sounds were played as the background sound in the environment, the city destination was chosen more than the beach destination. Study 2 showed that congruence between sounds and options increase the choice of those options, even when more options are available. Study 3 found that when sound is strongly associated with product appeal or positioning, and this association is perceived by the consumer, it increases people’s intention to buy the product. The last study showed that, for an experiential positioning, congruent sounds can improve people’s intentions to visit the store by improving people’s attitudes toward the store. These results shed light on the study of auxiliary sounds in retail and services environments, bringing to surface some effects that serve as an initial parameter on the study of this phenomenon. It also has managerial contributions as sounds can be strategically used by marketers in order to promote a richer consumption experience.

The cytochrome oxidase fast mobilization was studied in twelve cats (Felis catus) and three monkeys (Cebus apella). Visual stimulus of low spatial frequency, with variations in colour and brightness and no spatial orientation allowed the observation of cytochrome oxidase-rich patches in flattened sections of cat's visual cortex. The patches appeared in Vl, V2 and V3 supragranular layers, as well as in other extra-striated areas. Morphologically, those patches are equivalent to the blobs recently described in cat by improved histochemical methods. The morphometric analysis reveals that blobs medium size tend to increase from Vl to V2 and from V2 to V3. The densitometric analysis of monocularly stimulated monkey' s striate cortex sections shows a cytochrome-oxidase activation peak after thirty minutes of stimulation, followed by a decrease in optical density at greater times. This indicates that the phenomena is composed of two distinct phases. The monocular stimulation by stroboscopic light shows ocular dominance columns in monkey's Vl after thirty minutes. The cytochrome oxidase fast mobilization phenomena may be the product of the immediate activation of one or more genes of the enzyme' s subunits, of allosteric interactions with ATP, or of local redistribution of mitochondria.

Abstract: The cochlear implant is an electronic device that allows its users to regain, or have for the first time, sound detection skills. Nevertheless, in order to learn other hearing skills (discriminate, recognize, comprehend, memorize) and oral language, it is necessary, in many cases, a rehabilitation and sytematically teaching process. The program "Learning to Read and Spell in Small Steps" ("Aprendendo a Ler e a Escrever em Pequenos Passos") is a proposition of systematic teaching based upon verbal behavior and symbolic functions' fields of research, and operated by the equivalence realtions paradigm. The goal of the present study was to assess the effects of the program Learning to Read and Spell in Small Steps on the speech intelligibility of hearing-impaired and implanted children. Two children with prelingual hearing loss and cochlear implant users, with ages between seven and eight years old, participated in this study. The data collection design consisted on the Reading and Spelling Web Assessment before and after the teaching Modulo 1's three first Units exposition. In the initial assessment, both participants were characterized as suitable for the program, with low reading and spelling scores, although, presenting good scores in word identity selection-based tasks. During the 13 teaching steps exposed, participants required a mean of two expositions of each step to present a 100% of correct answers in dictated - printed words matching tasks (AC) and constructed response syllable matching of dictated words (AEs) tasks, involving training words. In the assessment exposed after teaching, both participants presented superior scores than the initial tests, showing the teaching program effects' extension over the speech intelligibility, even without the adoption of any vocal topographic modeling procedure (i.e. imitation)... Full textThis work entitled Sensory Garden and Pedagogical Practices in Environment Education reports a research developed in a Private School located in Pato Branco, Paraná. The study aimed to analyze pedagogical practices conducted by teachers in a sensory garden installed in this school, in order to identify possible relationship between the practices developed by teachers and different perspectives on Environment Education in Brazil, even though the activities were not designated explicitly to Environment Education. In this dissertation we present a brief history of environmental and sensory in Brazil and make a revision of studies that have discussed the use of these spaces to the development of pedagogical practices. We focus theoretically the Environment Education, situating it historically in the context of environment crisis. We contemplate some theoretical considers about current trends in this education in Brazil. The data were collected through participant observation and surveys with teachers and students after the practices developed in the sensory garden. The development of pedagogical practices by teachers using this place raised questions and reflections that could be considered the scope of environmental education, which might have not appeared if such practices have been developed in classroom. Finally, this work demonstrates that the use of different spaces in pedagogical practices can promote mutual growth and learning between teachers and students, as well as promote Environmental Education in a creative way, in the opposite direction of the specific practices and meaningless, which have little or no lasting impact.

Twenty healthy castrated bovines (Bos taurus indicus) were used and divided into 5 slaughters, which were done at different time. The study was divided into two phases with ten animals each, and for each evaluation 5 electrically stimulated animals and 5 non-stimulated animals were used. The ageing time was 28 days. It has been evaluated shear force, myofibril fragmentation index and sensorial evaluation in the Longissimus dorsi muscle. When the shear force was evaluated, the electrically stimulated carcasses showed a meat more tender than the non-stimulated ones, with real differences among treatments in the periods of 2 and 7 days of ageing. The electrically stimulated carcasses did not show an increase in the myofibril fragmentation index toward the ageing time. Nevertheless, in the non-stimulated carcasses there was an increase in the myofibril fragmentation index evaluated after 21 days of ageing. In the sensorial evaluation, the electric stimulation improved the attributes of tenderness and mastication.

Full textThis work intended to develop and integrate techniques, algorithms and equipments to aid visually handicapped people with the familiarization of unknown environments, as involved in orientation and mobility techniques, making locomotion an easier task. In a second phase, it allowed the blind user to receive signals corresponding to signs with letters, allowing them to \"read\" these signs. In order to do that, it was proposed the sensory substitution of vision by touch. Images were captured, processed digitally to be simplified, have their edges detected (contours of objects) and have their resolution reduced. This reduced image was then passed to the user by cutaneous electro-stimulation on the abdomen. A hardware prototype was developed, as well as firmware to control it, software to digitally process the image, a flexible matrix of electrodes, and an ultrasonic distance estimation system, to compensate for the lack of stereoscopy. The system was designed to be as flexible as possible to allow several stimuli tests. Preliminary tests were conducted that proved the feasibility of this concept. A second prototype, larger, was then designed and built. This device proved valuable also as a tool for research in experimental psychology, in cognition and learning.

Full textTranscranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used in the rehabilitation of various diseases that involve dysfunction of the sensory system. However, the option for treating the mandibular branch paresthesia has not been already employed. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the effects of tDCS in patients with paresthesia in branches of the mandibular nerve. Six patients had paresthesia of inferior alveolar nerve (unilateral or bilateral) and symptoms that began after maxillofacial surgery. They received 10 sessions of tDCS (2 mA, 20 min). The sensory evaluation was conducted prior to the treatment, after the fifth and after the tenth application in 24 points in the branch innervation of topography study. The evaluation was composed by tactile sensitivity test with the Semmes-Weinstein esthesiometer and thermal test with spray solution -50 ° C. There was significant improvement in the sensitivity during the tactile test in hypoesthesia regions, with the third evaluation significantly different from the first (p-value = 0.0015), but not different from the second evaluation (p-value = 0.1932). In the thermal test, the participants recognized a larger number of cold areas in the course of ratings (p-value = 0.05). The use of tDCS seemed to improve the tactile and thermal sensitivity of paresthesia, as well as the relief of paresthesias caused by oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Full textIncomplete Spinal Cord Injury (iSCI) is a condition generated by lesional processes that partially affect the integrity of the spinal cord, causing impairment in the sensorimotor function due to the decline in the functioning of the spinal cord. Such impairment directly impacts on physical, psychological and social aspects, with consequent reduction of quality of life and functional independence. Thus, effective rehabilitation requires the reduction of the damage caused by iSCI and, therefore, depends on techniques capable of favoring the neuroplasticity of the remaining medullary circuits. High frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a technique capable of inducing increased excitability of the primary motor cortex, corticospinal tract and spinal cord, facilitating the development of connectivity responsible for sensorimotor and functional improvement . The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of high frequency applied rTMS on the lower limbs area in M1 on sensorimotor function and on spasticity levels in individuals with chronic iSCI. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated fifteen subjects with chronic iSCI (35.3 ± 7.9 years, mean ± standard deviation) included sequentially in five placebo rTMS sessions and five sessions of active rTMS at 5Hz separated by a washout period of one week. Clinical evaluations were done before and after the placebo and active rTMS. Statistically significant changes in the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury Patients (ISNCSCI) motor scores (T (1, 14) = 5,359, P <0.001) were observed, which were accompanied by clinically significant effect sizes. The superficial sensitivity assessed by the ISNCSCI also showed statistically significant changes in the scores after active rTMS (T (1,14) = 2,223, P <0.043). No changes in spasticity were observed. No participant reported severe adverse events, except for transient headache after a few sessions. The present study found consistent statistical and clinical changes in sensorimotor function in individuals with chronic iSCI after active rTMS. Thus, this technique can be an effective form of rehabilitation in individuals with iSCI
