Full textThe aim of this thesis is to establish the characteristics that distinguish Chinese and Spanish commercial correspondence and to use the results of the research to provide guidelines for teaching commercial Chinese and Spanish and for translators when they translate these genres from Chinese into Spanish or vice versa. We start from the general hypothesis that certain discourse aspects of commercial correspondence, in particular rhetorical moves and politeness strategies, reflect the context, institutions and cultures in which they have been created and will therefore differ in different cultures. Starting from earlier studies on Chinese-English and Spanish-English Contrastive Rhetoric we have formulated two specific hypotheses: 1) in Spanish the ideational function is stressed, whereas in Chinese the interpersonal function, the relationship between the addresser and the addressee, is more important. This difference will affect the rhetorical moves used; 2) Politeness strategies used in Chinese correspond to the asymmetrical and hierarchical politeness system, while the strategies used in Spanish belong to symmetrical and deferential politeness system. In order to achieve the general objective of our research the thesis was carried out in three stages: 1) to establish a theoretical and methodological framework to analyze and compare discourse aspects in Chinese and Spanish commercial letters; 2) to build a corpus of model sales letters (from manuals) and real letters in Chinese and Spanish; 3) to describe the main discourse aspects of commercial correspondence found in the established corpus. In the first part of the thesis we have established a theoretical framework based on Translation Theory, Contrastive Rhetoric, Genre Analysis and Politeness Strategies (Chapters 1, 2 and 3). The object of our study is a corpus of 93 sales letters: 21 are model letters (13 in Chinese and 8 in Spanish) and 72 are real letters circulated in the business world in Taiwan and Spain during the last few years (36 from Taiwan and 36 from Spain). The model established to analyze rhetorical moves and politeness strategies in the corpus is based on the model of moves of sales promotion letters proposed by Bhatia (1993) and the politeness systems of Scollon and Scollon (1995). The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the results of the analysis of the corpus. Chapters 4 and 5 analyze Chinese and Spanish sales promotion letters from two sources: model letters and real letters. The parameters of the model letters were used to describe the differences and similarities of the Taiwanese and Spanish model and real letters. Chapter 6 is a contrastive analysis of the Taiwanese and Spanish letters, making use of the results about rhetorical moves and politeness strategies obtained in the two previous chapters, in order to test the two hypotheses formulated in our research. Crossing data from this analysis has given us qualitative and quantitative results. The results, collected in the tables shown in each chapter and summarized in the conclusions, have confirmed our original hypotheses and fulfilled our general objective: to provide guidelines for teachers of commercial Chinese and Spanish and for translators.

Full textLearning strategies for Chinese literacy have been previously studied (Shen, 2005). However, very little research exists regarding the application of these strategies in a Latin American context of higher education. This research studies the learning strategies that university students use for improving their Chinese learning. The present study identified learning strategies focused on Chinese literacy and got students’ assessment on them. Surveys and a focus group were the tools used in this research and were applied to a total of 18 students at different instances of Chinese learning. The results of this study point out the most used strategies among students and, moreover, suggest a classification for the strategies (cognitive, metacognitive, input-based and output-based). Besides, this study shows a notion of effectivity that only these students have towards the strategies they prefer.

Full textThe importance of mother tongue teaching for translation students is emphasized on translation student training studies. However, these studies have not addressed the way in which these contents are taught, although they have focused on the type of content for its courses. The aim of this study is to identify students' textual production problems and to explain the teaching strategies used by the mother tongue teachers of a Translation and Interpretation program. A qualitative exploratory methodology was used to interview the professors of four courses of the Mother Tongue curriculum line and do class observation in their respective class sessions between April and May of 2019. The study concluded that teachers their own teaching strategies which produced scaffolding as well as constructivist-based teaching strategies in their class sessions. In addition, argumentation and orthotypography in textual production were identified as the main problems regarding use of mother tongue. This study is expected to promote further research related to mother tongue teaching strategies in other translation and interpretation programs.

The translation of dialects and linguistic varieties is a branch of translation studies which has been briefly tackled by several authors. To date, a clear and definitive solution on how the translator should (or could) deal with this type of texts has not been found yet. This project does not claim to solve this problem, but aims to shed light on Spanish translators' past and current tradition in the translation of Italian novels in the period that goes from the second half of the XIX century to the XX and XXI centuries. We intend to defend the hypothesis of the possible application of Spanish dialects to the translation of Italian geographical-linguistic varieties. Concretely, we pursue two goals in this project. The first is a descriptive goal: the analysis of the translation of dialect varieties within a corpus of Italian novels and the corresponding Spanish translations, whose originals versions date back to the second half of the XIX century, to the XX and XXI centuries. Far from the implementation of a quantum-empirical methodology, we intend to prove if, as we do believe, the standardization of linguistic varieties is the most considered option within the Spanish translation tradition, and, besides, to proceed with a detailed analysis of those cases where an alternative option was proposed. The second goal concerns the elaboration of a translation proposal: we aim to propose a way to translate the Italian dialects into Spanish. Concretely, we aim to elaborate a translation model which includes the Spanish linguistic varieties, in the light of a socio-cultural perspective and not necessarily of a geographic correspondence. The elaboration of such a proposal requires specific material and a deep knowledge of the graphic representation of Spanish dialects within the Spanish linguistic and literary polysystem.

Full textTranslating from Spanish into Quechua is an activity that, after approximately two centuries, has gained importance in Peru again. This is largely due to the enactment of the Peruvian Indigenous Languages Act, which establishes that all official documents must be translated into the language of the territory where they are issued. Given this situation, the Peruvian government started to provide training programs for translators and interpreters of indigenous languages, including Quechua. Quechua translators play an important role in society and their work is complex because of linguistic and cultural aspects inherent in this indigenous language. However, there are very few studies that have researched their translation process. In this context, the present qualitative research has focused on analyzing different and common translation strategies of Spanish-Quechua translators employing strategies established by Translation Studies, which serve as a tool for analysis that helps to classify them. To this end, we conducted interviews with seven translators residing in Lima. The results reflect that the most frequent strategies are loan, cultural filtering, paraphrase, neologism with new senses, phrase structure change and naturalization. Likewise, we found that there are factors that participants considered to choose their strategies: receiver, purpose of translation, client's requirements, culture, and context. Furthermore, we discovered that translators shared common viewpoints related to those strategies.

Engholm, Elin. "Cuando el gerundio español se sustituye por otras formas verbales en sueco : Un estudio sobre las estrategias de traducción usadas para expresar algunos gerundios de la novela El paraíso en la otra esquina de Mario Vargas Llosa en sueco." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för språk, litteratur och interkultur, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-31100.
Full textThe present study investigates how some gerunds in the novel The Way to Paradise by Mario Vargas Llosa is translated to Swedish by the translator Peter Landelius. The analysis shows that different strategies are used, such as the past tense, the construction “and” + the past tense, prepositions, omission of the verb or subordinate relative clauses. In very few cases, 6 %, the gerund is kept in the translation. The analysis confirms the hypothesis, when the gerund in the Spanish text is replaced by other grammatical constructions in Swedish, some semantic and stylistic nuances configured in Vargas Llosa’s novel are lost or modified in the Swedish translation.

Full textIn the professional translation training it is necessary to develop different competences, one of the most important is the linguistic competence. However, in recent years, the development of this competence has been affected due to the widespread belief that translation students have a comprehensive knowledge of the second language. Furthermore, the development of reading comprehension and writing skills is closely linked to the linguistic competence, and both are essential for students’ academic performance in translation courses. Therefore, this investigation focuses on describing the teaching strategies applied by English teachers in order to develop reading comprehension and writing skills in the translation and interpreting English program at UPC. To achieve this, we proposed to analyze the documents used for teaching English courses, observe classes, and conduct interviews in the last two levels of English teaching (Ingles TI4 and Ingles TI5).

Full textErotic language is a phenomenon that addresses both the field of eroticism and sexuality through linguistic elements which are part of the author's style. There are difficulties in translating erotic language that lie in the comprehension and reexpression of these elements and its symbolic meanings, as well as in the sexual and erotic constructs of a given culture and ideology. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the English translation of Aphrodite: A Memoir of the Senses, a novel written in Spanish by Isabel Allende and translated by Margaret Sayers. The discursive analysis of the erotic language allows for understanding the characteristics of the style, voice and mode. Our aims consist of discovering how erotic language is presented in the source text and of identifying which are the strategies and techniques that Sayers chose for the translated version. We propose to apply the content analysis technique, so that linguistic elements of erotic language may be analyzed in the source text through a codification book. We also propose to elaborate index tabs to analyze the voice and mode at a macro-textual level. Furthermore, the contrastive textual analysis technique will be applied, so that selected fragments and elements may be compared and analyzed in both versions through index tabs. By this way, the strategies and techniques used by Sayers for the translation of erotic language in Aphrodite will be explained.

Full textThe following study focused on the comics and graphic novels translation under a multimodal approach. There is several research that analyze linguistic resources used in comics translation, but only a few focus on the interrelation between text and image when it comes to the construction of an identity. This study will help to identify in which ways the representation and self-representation of Chineseness is presented in the source version in French and target version in Spanish of both graphic novels: Shenzhen by Guy Delisle and Une vie chinoise by Philippe Otié and Li Kunwu. A multimodal corpus analysis will be applied to demonstrate how text and image build this imaginary. Furthermore, identifying the translation strategies applied in the Spanish version will allow us to recognize if this representation and self-representation is maintained in the translations.

Thesis, Stockholm University, Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-8225.

Full textThis research seeks to identify and explain the perception that medical laboratory professionals (clinical pathologists and medical technologists) of three Lima hospitals have concerning the quality of laboratory test's user manuals translated from English into Spanish. For this purpose, a study with a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative) was carried out to characterize the users' general opinion and the differing perceptions regarding their experience with translated user manuals. Surveys based on the 5-point balanced Likert scale provided quantitative information on four variables adapted from Navarro's characteristics of scientific language (Navarro, 2008): clarity, accuracy, terminological precision and textual function. Afterwards, interviews were held to delve into the rationale behind the survey’s answers, to explore conflicting opinions, and to identify strategies developed by the personnel when facing unfamiliar elements in the translation. In response, the laboratory professionals developed strategies to address the elements affecting translation quality during their practice. The qualitative data revealed two types of strategies: individual and social; the type chosen is related to the level of experience of pathologists and technologists. Experience proves to be a major factor in the use and evaluation of translations. This research contributes to the acknowledgement of specialized end users as potential quality evaluators during the translation process and by providing feedback on the translation product.

This doctoral thesis is a descriptive study which falls into the general framework of discourse and translational analysis. The study has two main aims: on the one hand, it firstly analyses the role of some French cohesive devices in two different types of texts (a political text and a literary one) in order to show how relevant they are to the construction of meaning. On the other hand, the study describes and compares the main translational strategies used in the Spanish target texts to translate these linguistic devices. Moreover, the analysis shows the consequences of these translational strategies both on the microstructure and the macrostructure of the target texts.
The cohesive devices we have chosen to analyse include repetitions, pronominal anaphors, order into the sentences, ellipsis, lexical creativity, punctuation, the French conjunction "et" and some discourse markers.
