Full textABSTRACT: This research aimed to describe the relationship between perceived stress and sexual functioning in a sample of 36 patients with cervical cancer, between the ages of 31 and 46 years (M = 41.25, SD= 4.35) who received ambulatory attention in a specialized oncological institution in Lima. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) (Gonzales and Landeros, 2008) and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) (Blümel, 2004) were used. Perceived stress and sexual functioning were not correlated. Furthermore, a significant and direct relationship was found between age and the level of desire (rs= .44, p = .00). Also, women from Lima (MDN = 2.40, SD = 1.23) scored higher in desire (U= 82.50, p= .035) than women from rural areas (MDN = 1.20, SD = .86); also women who practice a religion (M = 2.80, SD = .98) report higher levels of satisfaction (t (34) = 2.36, p = .024) than women who do not practice any religion (M = 3.75, SD = 1.20). Possible explanations for the findings are analyzed and future recommendations are proposed.

Full textThe present research aims to analyze the relationship between Physical Activity with Perceived Stress and with Emotion Regulation in a group of university students. The participants were 102 students of both sexes, whose ages oscillated between 16-23 years and that they were attending the first cycles in a private university of Lima. The Global Questionnaire on Physical Activity (GPAQ) was used in its version translated into Spanish (WHO, 2007); The Perceived Stress Scale (EEP), in its version translated and validated into Spanish (Remor y Carrobles, 2001) and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQP), adapted for Peru (Gargurevich and Matos, 2010). It was found that Physical Activity inversely correlated with Perceived Stress, whereas no association was found with Emotion Regulation. In addition, a direct relationship was found between the Sedentary Behavior, the final section of the GPAQ and the emotional regulation strategy of Suppression. Finally, we found differences in the strategy of Suppression by sex. The possible explanations of these findings are discussed, the limitations of the investigation are reported and possible future lines of research are proposed.

Full textThis research aims to describe the relationship between perceived stress and physical activity in older adults diagnosed with Type II diabetes mellitus. Thirty five members of support groups for older adults between the ages of 60 and 75 years with type II diabetes participated voluntarily. They were evaluated with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) to measure perceived stress and the long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to measure physical activity. The results indicated a normal level of perceived stress and moderate to high levels of physical activity. There were significant differences between physical activity and age (rho=-.49, p<0.01), and physical activity and time since diagnosis (rho=-.40, p<0.05). The dimensions of the IPAQ demonstrated the following correlations: a direct correlation between moderate physical activity and other diseases (rho=.38, p<0.05), a direct correlation between vigorous physical activity and the number of medical complications caused by diabetes (rho=.42, p<0.05), and an inverse correlation between vigorous physical activity and time of diagnosis (rho=-.44, p<0.01). Finally, an inverse correlation between perceived stress and physical activity (rho = -.35, p <0.05) was obtained. The results contribute to the knowledge about the variables that are related to the health status of senior citizens with diabetes mellitus type II. It also demonstrates the need to create a physical activity questionnaire for older adults that can measure the intensity of physical activity more precisely.

Full textThis research aims to explore the relationship between social support and perceived stress in young homosexual gays between the ages of 18 and 32 (M=24.53) in the metropolitan city of Lima. For this purpose we conducted a research based on a quantitive methodology (N=53), which allowed to explore such relationship. In addition, we observed the relation between social support and perceived stress with other sociodemographic variables. Through a web link, a social demographic questionnaire, the MOS (Sherbourne & Stewart, 1991) and the EPP (Cohen et al., 1983) was applied. The results, unlike what was expected to be found based on other studies, do not show any correlation between social support and perceived stress. Nevertheless, it was found that the bigger the social support net, higher levels of positive interaction and emotional support.

Full textThe aim was to analyze whether there are differences in the levels of stress perceived by the parents of children with chronic health problems, according to the type of locus of control (external or internal). The participants were 113 parents who have children with chronic health problems, and who voluntarily agreed to answer the prepared questionnaires and that are part of the measurement booklet, 65.5% being women and 34,5% being men. The Rotter Locus of Control scale, adapted in Peru by Brenlla and Vázquez (2010) and the Perceived Stress scale adapted in Peru by Guzmán (2016), were applied to this sample. The analysis of the data found determines that parental stress is not significantly differentiated by the type of locus of control that it possesses, but differences are reported according to the diagnosis of the child with chronic disease and by the origin of the same.

Full textThe self-care strategies are desirable practices to reduce the stress and to promote the holistic wellness among Clinician Psychologists (Colman, et al., 2016). However, little has been researched about the stress experienced in the context of undergraduate internship and the role of self-care in psychology students. Thus, the present study has the purpose to find about the relationship between the self-care strategies and the perceived stress’ levels in 107 Psychology students who are enrolled in an internship in clinical and health contexts. The sample consisted of 81 women and 26 men, whose ages were between 21 and 35 years (M=24.35 years; DE=2.40), from 3 universities in Metropolitan Lima. The Scale of Self-Care Behaviors for Clinical Psychologists (EAP for its acronym in Spanish; Guerra, Rodríguez, Morales & Betta, 2008) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS; Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein, 1983) were used. The results suggest a relationship between self-care and perceived stress (r=.36; p<.01). Likewise, significant differences were observed regarding self-care in terms of the type of relationship of couple, the sector of the internship area and the space of emotional support. In addition, significant differences were found on the perceived stress based on university, the student mobilization and the space of emotional support. On the other hand, significant correlations were found between self-care and some academic variables. Subsequently, regression analyzes found that self-care, emotional support and mobilization predicted the stress intensity model (R2=.23, p<.001).

Full textThe purpose of this research was to describe the binge watching behaviour and explore the relationship between it, the motivations to watch tv series and perceived stress in students of a private university in Lima, Perú. Although there is no common agreement for the definition of binge watching, it is commonly defined as a person watching two or more episodes in one sitting. In order to characterize this behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic, a quantitative study with a cross-sectional descriptive design was conducted in a sample of 141 students, 28 men (19.9%) and 113 women (80.1%) between 18 and 25 years old (M = 20.37, DE = 1.93) that were currently enrolled and taking courses in the chosen university. The instruments used were the Watching TV Series Motives Questionnaire (WTSMQ) and the Perceived Stress Scale (EEP-14). Furthermore, six questions were included to help describe the binge watching behaviour in the sample. These questions were elaborated on the basis of the questionnaires made by Winland (2015) and Flayelle, Maurage y Billieux (2017) and were adapted to the purpose of this thesis. The results of this study indicated that 96, 5% of the participants watched two or more episodes in one sitting. No significant correlation was found between the number of episodes watched in one sitting and perceived stress as well as between the number of episodes watched in one sitting and the motive of social interaction. A significant association was found between perceived stress and the motive of coping-escapism for watching tv series which indicates that university students use tv series as a coping-escapism mechanism in light of perceived stress.

Personality traits play a significant role in individual differences in cortisol response (LeBlanc, Ducharme, & Thompson, 2004). However, the nature and underlying mechanisms of the relationship between cortisol secretion and personality traits still remain unclear. Cortisol, an end product of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis (HPA), is a glucocorticoid that our body naturally secretes according to a pronounced diurnal cycle with increased values under stressful situations (cortisol reactivity). The aim of the present PhD dissertation was to elucidate how personality traits influence the cortisol secretion of undergraduate students in three different conditions; stressful, baseline, and relaxation. This work began by evaluating the cortisol response facing a stressful situation (public speaking) of psychology students. We believed that cortisol reactivity would be positively related to Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness, and negatively to Extraversion, Neuroticism and Psychoticism. In our second study, we assessed the baseline cortisol in students with extreme scores in Neuroticism (N) attempting to prove a theoretical expected association between N and diurnal cortisol secretion. We postulated that high N participants would display elevated diurnal background levels of cortisol compared to low N participants. Finally, we examined whether one week of Abbreviated Progressive Muscle Relaxation (APMR) was effective in reducing overall levels of psychological and physiological stress of high- and low-N participants. Our results confirmed, firstly, that public speaking significantly increased cortisol secretion when compared to a non-stressful academic activity. In addition, Conscientiousness was associated with an enhanced cortisol response to public speaking, and Psychoticism with a blunted one. Secondly, we found that high levels of Neuroticism were associated with elevated cortisol secretion on daily stress, but only after the first 45 min following awakening (CAR). This association was independent of sex and age, smoking status, awakening time, and day of study. Finally, in third place, APMR was effective in decreasing both psychological and physiological stress in all participants independently of their N-score, gender, or age.
