Abstract:
ABSTRACTRichard Hooker's theology of law was rarely far from pragmatic concerns. He wanted to promote a peaceful and prosperous human community before God while holding that moral right consists in conformity to the divine will. In this paper, we tread a narrow path between Hooker as ‘villain’ because of his role in preparing for the modern separation of ethics from metaphysics and as ‘unqualified hero’ whose ethically substantive and teleological theology of law took inspiration from Holy Scripture and the angels' worship of God. The claim is that Hooker's theology of law still provides a fertile environment in which to think practically today about questions such as: What is the nature of divine authority? What is law for? What should characterize the human exercise of authority?

Aristodemou, Georgia. "Eros Figures in the Iconography of Death." Eikon / Imago 10 (February 8, 2021): 25–42. http://dx.doi.org/10.5209/eiko.74134.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the intense presence of Eros figures in funerary monuments from the region of Macedonia during the roman period, evolving around the perception of death, the familial bonds and social structure that these monuments reveal. Eros, depicted either leaning on or holding an inverted torch, or sleeping on a rock, when placed upon graves is perceived as Eros funéraire. The funerary connotations of Eros figures often assimilate them with Sleep, Death, and the eternal sadness of Death. Especially when used in the funerary monuments of children, these figures accentuate the parental grief for the loss of their children. On the other hand, the childlike representation of Eros symbolizes the eternal beauty of youth and the parental hope that their deceased children will continue enjoying a happy afterlife.

Abstract:
The aim of the research was to study the antibacterial effect of plant essential oils on the basis of nanoparticles of metals in vitro with the use of test microorganisms on test objects. In experiments, broths of S. aureus (strain P-209) were used. To prepare the broth culture, 25 cc of the nutrient medium was poured into the flask and 0.25 cc of the daily broth culture of microorganisms was added to it. A day later, broth culture was filtered through a sterile gauze-wool or paper filter. In a test tube with various dilutions of a disinfectant in 5 ml, 0.5 cm3 of 24-hour broth culture of the test microorganisms was applied. After 10 minutes holding the platinum loop from the flasks, samples were taken and transferred to Petri dishes from the MPA. The indicated types of work were conducted in compliance with the conditions of sterility. After 30 minutes, keeping the same interval, again took samples and carried out the next sowing on agar. After this, Petri dishes were placed in a thermostat with a temperature of 37 °С. Seeds were viewed 24 and 48 hours. A similar method was also used when conducting a study to determine the bactericidal effect of E. coli. The bactericidal activity of the drug “Barez” on the basis of nanoparticles of silver, benzalkonium chloride and essential oils in vitro with the use of test microorganisms on test objects was investigated. The drug has a high bactericidal effect on S. aureus, which exceeds the activity of phenol in 12.7 times, in comparison with E. coli – 24 times. By protein contamination of surfaces bactericide decreases in 1.9 times in relation to gram-positive microflora and in 1.4 times – in gram-negative. Complex disinfectant “Barez” starting from 0.05% concentration for 10 minutes completely inactivates E. soli and S. aureus on various materials with different structure of the surface. The investigated solutions of essential oils have a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action and can be used for disinfection in diseases of animals, the pathogens of which are equated with resistance to E. soli and S. aureus. Microorganisms, in prolonged contact with silver nanoparticles and essential oils, practically do not produce resistance to them, which is a significant advantage over antibiotics and can be used in humane and veterinary medicine.

Endress, Gerhard. "Averroes' De Caelo Ibn Rushd's Cosmology in his Commentaries on Aristotle's On the Heavens." Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 5, no. 1 (March 1995): 9–49. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0957423900001934.

Abstract:
Averroes defended philosophy by returning to the true Aristotle. For this purpose, Aristotle's book “On the Heaven,” in which he explained the eternity, uniqueness and movement of the universe, occupied a place of special importance. But the Aristotelian philosopher had a hard time holding his own in the face of contradictions within the book and with respect to Aristotle's later works. In his early Compendium, later Paraphrase, and final Long Commentary of De Caelo, Ibn Rushd continued the efforts of the Hellenistic commentators in order to integrate all the elements of his doctrine into a unified system, to harmonize his early cosmology with his later Metaphysics – the early doctrine of natural movement of the elements, and of the self-moving star-souls (a Platonic element), with the doctrine of potency and actuality and the theory of the First Mover – and to uphold his models of homocentric planetary spheres against the mathematical paradigm of Ptolemaic astronomy. By insisting throughout on demonstrative arguments based on rational principles, he asserted the philosophers' claim to irrefutable truth.

Abstract:
Al-Ghazali (Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Tusi al-Ghazali,1058-1111) is one of the most important thinkers in the history of Islamic andArabic thought. He lived and wrote at the height of the intellectual ferment ofIslam. Originally from Tus (in modern day Iran), he traveled extensivelythroughout the Muslim world. Al-Ghazali was a leading religious intellectualduring his lifetime; he was a jurist (faqīh), a theologian (mutakallim), as wellas a Sufi. Three of his most famous works are: The Incoherence of the Philosophers,Deliverer from Error, and Revivification of the Religious Sciences. Thefirst work contains al-Ghazali’s famous and devastating attack on philosophy, and while it deals in large measure with theology and theological claims, it isprincipally a refutative work. In this book, al-Ghazali investigates philosophicaldoctrines and criticizes philosophers for holding many heretical opinions, especially for three blasphemous views that are deserving of death: the beliefin the pre-eternity of the world (in effect denying God’s creation of the world),the denial of God’s knowledge of particulars, and the denial of the resurrectionof bodies and their assembly at the Day of Judgment. This work is largely ...

Abstract:
When one works in the field of Shari'ah studies, a field widelyperceived as holding little excitement (for those who pursue careers init and for those who don't), one rarely encounters a book that sendsone into the poetic ecstasy of a Keats, for example, on the occasion ofhis first looking into Chapman's Homer. Nonetheless, in any intellectualenterprise there are joys that perhaps only the initiated, so tospeak, may truly share. In fact, in the field of Shari'ah studies, as inmany of the fields related to the study of classical Islamic disciplines, the esoteric delights to be tasted these days are many, particularly inview of the continual stream of carefully edited works from theclassical period ... especially when so many of them were believedlost, eaten by worms in some dreary desert setting or sent tumblingtoward eternity in the bloody waters of the Tigris when Baghdad wasoverrun by Mongol hordes. But, to return to the present, it is certainlynot everyday that something really significant happens in the field. InThe Search for God's Law, that significant something has happened.Less than a decade ago, a distinguished western scholar lamentedin the Journal of the American Oriental Society that "despite the greatinterest shown in U$iil al fiqh by Orientalists throughout the world, nogeneral and systematic work dealing with this most important Islamic ...

Abstract:
It is rare to find a philosopher so fixated on a single issue as the much-neglected thinker, prominent at the court of Shah ʿAbbās, Mīr Dāmād. His corpus is very much concerned with reconciling the key theological dispute between the “philosophical” position holding that the cosmos exists as a logical consequence of the principle and hence a cosmos that is coeternal with God, and the theological (scriptural even) imperative that God creates out of nothing in time. Mīr Dāmād offers a solution that mirrors some early modern scholastic approaches to middle knowledge and a way to reconcile eternal and temporal origination of the cosmos through the notion of “perpetual creation” (ḥudūth dahrī). We consequently find thinkers in the later Safavid-Mughal period contesting this solution, with some key students of Mīr Dāmād defending it. But broadly it remained an artifact of Islamic intellectual history in the early modern period.

Abstract:
The final chapter briefly touches on Richardson’s second divorce but focuses on her difficulties finding and keeping employment. After holding a series of jobs in various corporate and not-for-profit agencies, Richardson eventually earned a permanent civil service position with the City of New York, where she worked until the twenty-first century. In one way or another, all her jobs involved some kind of social justice. Over the last five decades, Richardson has paid close attention to social change movements, including Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter, and this chapter discusses her thoughts about them, particularly her view that young people have the capability and vision to lead the nation to greater freedom, just as young people did in the 1960s. She advises them to replicate the group-centered and member-driven model student activists employed in the early 1960s and to avoid becoming ideological.
