Abstract:
AFDX (Avionics Full DupleX Switched Ethernet, ARINC 664) utilized in Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 represents a major upgrade in both bandwidth and capability; however some legacy systems are difficult to connect into the AFDX bus smoothly. A low cost AFDX end system based on SOPC (System On a Programmable Chip) is presented. A Xilinx Spartan 3AN FPGA is employed to build the whole system; and then a dedicated reduced Ethernet MAC controller for AFDX end system is designed; a MC8051 open core microcontroller is employed as the system controller and protocol processing unit. The whole design costs small FPGA resources and the experiments show that the designed AFDX end system works robustly and correctly.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to focus on the implementation of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850–9-2 standard based process bus with merging units (MUs) and sampled values (SV) to improve the protection and control systems. The digital process interface is important to be included on the process bus level. Design/methodology/approach The IEC 61850–9-2 process bus standard is not extensively used in regard to SV when the IEC 61850 standard is implemented by power utilities. Many protection and control intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) are connected to a substation communication network, routers and switches using fibre-optic linked Ethernet. However, inductive current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) secondary circuits are still hardwired to the IEDs. The paper highlight issues with the copper wires for currents signals and how these issues can be eliminated by using the MUs and the SV protocol. The voltage regulator control IED of each transformer is required to regulate the voltage level of the secondary side bus bar it is connected to. All the regulating IEDs of parallel-connected transformers are required to communicate with each other to share information. They collectively control the bus bar voltage depending on the switching configuration of the parallel transformers. Findings It is shown that process bus information such as the high voltage switchgear status information of primary plant in the yard, can be used to improve the substation protection and control systems. The power transformer protection and voltage regulator control are focused on. Research limitations/implications The deliverables of the research work can be applied in: The Centre for Substation Automation and Energy Management systems of the Department of Electrical Engineering, power utilities and other establishments using power systems and digital substations in the electrical supply industry. The research work on the thesis led to the development of a laboratory test-bench where students can learn and understand the basics of the IEC 61850–9-2 SVs principles. The test-bench components such as the IEDs, real-time digital simulator, standalone MUs and Ethernet equipment can be used for future research applications. The test-bench can be used to demonstrate during course work for students at the University, the basics of digital substations using a process bus network with IEDs, MUs and Ethernet equipment. Practical implications The research work showed where lab equipment is getting outdated and future equipment will be required for research work in IEC 61850–9-2 process bus. Originality/value Power utilities can benefit from implementing the IEC 61850 part 9–2 of the standard and by using MUs and other process interface information in substations. A cost reduction in high voltage equipment, substation installation and commissioning costs and better performance of protection and control system can be achieved.

A simulation system on information flow is designed to emulate the data communication on the RS-485 bus, the 1553B bus and the Ethernet bus. This simulation system has a high requirement for the extendibility, and it must have an ability to regulate and reconfigure the information flow on the three buses. To deal with the above problems, the simulation system has to be designed as a reconfigurable extendible real-time multi-bus simulation system. In order to meet the real-time requirements for the simulation of the information flow and the universal property for the most systems, this simulation system must be carried out based on a real-time operating systems (VxWorks) and a common hardware platforms. Firstly, this simulation system will have a total emulation and a whole simulation for the information flow, the communication status, the monitor nodes and the control nodes on each of the three buses. Secondly, this simulation system defines an extendible protocol between the simulation sever and the simulation terminals, and strictly plan the information flow among the simulation terminals to achieve the design requirements of the actual system. And then the simulation system has to own a reconfigure software components and a complete database functions of recording and stacking the data.

In order to speed up the acquisition and processing of signal, this paper has developed a signal acquisition and processing system based on zynq platform. Based on the ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core and editable logic unit architecture of Zynq AP SoC platform, this paper implements a fully functional signal acquisition and processing system by software and hardware collaborative design. ARM0 is the main processor that controls system and shared resources. ARM1 is the slave processor. ARM1 is responsible for receiving the data converted by the AD7606 analog-to-digital chip. The data is sent to the Hamming window function IP core created under vivado HLS through the AXI bus. After the data is processed by Hamming window function, it is sent to ARM1 again through AXI bus. OCM acts as the shared memory for ARM0 and ARM1 communication. The Linux system runs on ARM0. The processed data is sent to the upper computer through ethernet through UDP protocol. Utilizing the architecture of the Zynq platform, the system efficiency is improved, and the stability of the system is ensured, so that the FPGA can enter the field of embedded systems.

Abstract:
Numerous military platforms (land, sea and air) feature serial data bus technology based on the US MIL-STD-1553B data bus standard for integration of their digital systems. Many of these platforms have 15-20 years of operational life remaining, but the installed 1553B data buses (data networks) having only a 1Mbit/sec transfer rate are unable to meet many of the future data networking requirements. Research into new, higher performance data networks has concentrated on modern alternatives with throughput increases of two to three orders of magnitude (100Mbit/sec to 1Gbit/sec). These are generally based on modern commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) standards, good examples being Ethernet and Fibre Channel. Some are already being employed in military platforms having been ruggedised for the harsh physical and electro-magnetic environment. However these COTS systems while being a natural choice for new platforms may not be cost effective for upgrading older platforms. This paper plots the history of MIL-STD-1553, possibly the most successful military platform standard of all time, and discusses some of the options for increasing its performance and economically extending its life into the future.

Abstract:
With the global trend to digitalize substation automation systems, International Electro technical Commission 61850, a communication protocol defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission, has been given much attention to ensure consistent communication and integration of substation high-voltage primary plant assets such as instrument transformers, circuit breakers and power transformers with various intelligent electronic devices into a hierarchical level. Along with this transition, equipment of primary plants in the switchyard, such as non-conventional instrument transformers, and a secondary system including merging units are expected to play critical roles due to their fast-transient response over a wide bandwidth. While a non-conventional instrument transformer has advantages when compared with the conventional one, extensive and detailed performance investigation and feasibility studies are still required for its full implementation at a large scale within utilities, industries, smart grids and digital substations. This paper is taking one step forward with respect to this aim by employing an optimized network engineering tool to evaluate the performance of an Ethernet-based network and to validate the overall process bus design requirement of a high-voltage non-conventional instrument transformer. Furthermore, the impact of communication delay on the substation automation system during peak traffic is investigated through a detailed simulation analysis.

Abstract:
In engineering, combining a number of solutions and technologies can result in more effective systems than using only one approach on its own. In particular, it has been shown that in condition monitoring (CM), smarter maintenance systems may be obtained by integrating various sensors together. This paper extends this idea by integrating various non-homogeneous technologies horizontally. The proposed system is an internet-based condition monitoring (e-CM) prototype that can identify abnormal tension in moving belts. It is shown that by applying a classification technique, known as novelty detection, it is possible to decide the status of belt tension by processing the belt vibration signals from an optical sensor (i.e. an indirect sensing approach). A novel method for industrial network communication using XML to create a single standard format for sensor information is also used to link the sensor to the process controller via the internet using the flexible CAN bus technology; this is used together with low-cost microcontrollers with a built-in ethernet link for data acquisition and transmission. The resulting integrated approach is more efficient because: (a) it can reduce waste by minimizing process interruptions caused by direct belt inspection methods while obtaining high detection accuracy (99.67 per cent) and (b) it can provide on-line remote CM that is cost-effective, simple, standardized, and scalable across a wide area and for a relatively large number of sensors. This improvement is especially important when applied to bottleneck processes and critical components.

Abstract:
This paper discusses a network-based refueling control system with multiple control terminals that achieves the control input and display of near-aircraft position, refueling station, and centralized console. The system can achieve the closed-loop control of the refueling input flow, automatic control of the fixed refueling amount, and collection of environmental parameters, such as pipeline pressure, according to the refueling aircraft model. Moreover, the system can dynamically display parameter information of the refueling process in real time on three terminals. To meet the requirements of system functions and the real-time performance of tasks, this study selected the LPC2378 controller with the ARM core. The controller uses the µC/OS-II embedded real-time operating system as the software operating platform. To achieve the special requirements of the explosion-proof system, the explosion-proof 485 bus was employed to communicate with the display control unit (DCU) of the intrinsically safe contact aircraft stand and refueling station. The communication adopts the dual-redundant Ethernet communication and full-duplex 485 communication. To avoid the influence of external equipment on the control circuit, the power isolation method was adopted to ensure the stability of the system. After comprehensive debugging of hardware and software, we deem that the system has good performance and can be applied in engineering.

Abstract:
Abstract. The Millstone Hill Incoherent Scatter Data Acquisition System (MIDAS) is based on an abstract model of an incoherent scatter radar. This model is implemented in a hierarchical software system, which serves to isolate hardware and low-level software implementation details from higher levels of the system. Inherent in this is the idea that implementation details can easily be changed in response to technological advances. MIDAS is an evolutionary system, and the MIDAS hardware has, in fact, evolved while the basic software model has remained unchanged. From the earliest days of MIDAS, it was realized that some functions implemented in specialized hardware might eventually be implemented by software in a general-purpose computer. MIDAS-W is the realization of this concept. The core component of MIDAS-W is a Sun Microsystems UltraSparc 10 workstation equipped with an Ultrarad 1280 PCI bus analog to digital (A/D) converter board. In the current implementation, a 2.25 MHz intermediate frequency (IF) is bandpass sampled at 1 µs intervals and these samples are multicast over a high-speed Ethernet which serves as a raw data bus. A second workstation receives the samples, converts them to filtered, decimated, complex baseband samples and computes the lag-profile matrix of the decimated samples. Overall performance is approximately ten times better than the previous MIDAS system, which utilizes a custom digital filtering module and array processor based correlator. A major advantage of MIDAS-W is its flexibility. A portable, single-workstation data acquisition system can be implemented by moving the software receiver and correlator programs to the workstation with the A/D converter. When the data samples are multicast, additional data processing systems, for example for raw data recording, can be implemented simply by adding another workstation with suitable software to the high-speed network. Testing of new data processing software is also greatly simplified, because a workstation with the new software can be added to the network without impacting the production system. MIDAS-W has been operated in parallel with the existing MIDAS-1 system to verify that incoherent scatter measurements by the two systems agree. MIDAS-W has also been used in a high-bandwidth mode to collect data on the November, 1999, Leonid meteor shower.Key words: Electromagnetics (instruments and techniques; signal processing and adaptive antennas) – Ionosphere (instruments and techniques)

Abstract:
The high spectrum efficiency of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission traditionally depends on the high multiplexing gain in rich scattering environments, which will not always hold in the line-of-sight (LOS) environments, especially at higher microwave frequency band. In this paper, a novel antenna array design rule is proposed to guarantee full multiplexing gain for LOS-MIMO systems with one- or two-dimensional antenna arrays in LOS scenarios, and the strict perpendicular constraint is released in the two-dimensional case. The minimum antenna array area and the performance sensitivity to the area error are also obtained to guide the practical system design. Then, a demo MIMO-OFDM system with the designed square antenna array at 15 GHz carrier is implemented on a novel Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switch-based software defined radio (SDR) platform, which combines the hardware accelerating units (HAUs) with the general-purpose processors (GPPs). The field evaluation results show that the system throughput and spectrum efficiency are greater than 1 Gbps and 15 bps/Hz, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to demonstrate the Gbps LOS-MIMO-OFDM system at such microwave bands in the world, which can be a successful design example for the next generation wireless backhaul or fixed wireless access.

Purpose – The aim of this study was to develop a new generation of automatic systems based on cutting-edge design and practical welding physics to minimize downtime caused by defects and machine faults on the barges. Automatic welding has been used frequently on offshore pipeline projects. Design/methodology/approach – An automated welding robot system for sub-sea pipeline installation was constructed. The system utilized the double-car double-torch welding, which is light-weight and compact, suited for offshore applications. Several state-of-the-art technologies were integrated into the control system design, including a heterogeneous network based on EtherCAT technology, network communications based on CANopen, motor synchronization, all-position welding, etc. In addition, the utilization of the CAN bus reduced the number of cable lines and increased the extensibility of the proposed welding robot system. An internal clamp with copper shoes assured a nice root weld and narrow bevel design and the welding efficiency was improved accordingly. Findings – The trial was carried out to verify the rationality and effectiveness of the proposed automated system. The deposition rate of the backing welding could reach 17.78 kg/h; the average time for each welding was 340 s. This system was unique in that it features a dual-torch welding head that allowed for the deposition of one run with twice as much material as a single torch head. The experiment showed that the double-vehicle double-torch mode can greatly improve the welding efficiency of pipeline installation during the welding process. Research limitations/implications – The automated welding robot system will be applied to offshore pipeline projects. Originality/value – This robot is the first submarine pipeline installation welding robot to use a heterogeneous network based on EtherCAT technology. Various aspects of the submarine pipeline installation welding robot’s design and performance were discussed, including mechanical body design, control system design and welding process specification.

Abstract:
For the delay may degrade the performance of networked control systems, networked control systems based on 100 M switched Ethernet are proposed in this paper. According to the working principle of Ethernet switch, the formulas of the upper bound delay of the single-level switched Ethernet and the multiple-level switched Ethernet are deduced by the timing diagram method, and the values of the upper bound delay are also given. The key factors that influence the upper bound delay of switched Ethernet are analyzed; then, the characteristics of the upper bound delay are presented, which show that the delay induced by the single-level 100 M switched Ethernet has little effect on the performance of control systems, while the delay induced by the multiple-level 100 M switched Ethernet may meet the time requirements of all classes of control systems if the numbers of levels and the numbers of nodes connecting to switches are set properly. Finally, the performance of networked control systems is simulated by TrueTime, and the results further show the feasibility and superiority of 100 M switched Ethernet based networked control systems without modification of the network protocols.

This article focuses on field bus technology, a digital two-way conul1unications protocol. It is designed to take advantage of intelligent instrumentation equipped with microprocessors to communicate between the field and the control room. Because it can communicate large quantities of data from the field devices, industrial networks tying together field bus instruments open the way for complex control and automation tasks. As field bus evolves, some think that computer networking will play an increasingly important role and improve the performance in the plant. Both Profibus and Fieldbus Foundation provide for Ethernet capability. Wireless communication is also likely to play a potential role in field bus systems. There is a potential for wireless in data acquisition. Issues still needed to be worked out: electrical storms can interfere with communications and wires must be strung to power the devices.

Abstract:
In a large system with a lot of distribution solar sources which are all connected to the national grid, a communication system becomes the important part for data acquisition in order to control the whole system stable and efficiency. To deal with this challenge, this paper presents a solution based on Zigbee and Ethernet communication standard. Zigbee standard was created to be a specification of a high level wireless communication protocol which is not only secure, reliable, simple but also low cost and low power. With Zigbee, we can create a communication network for hundreds to thousands of mini solar sources in a large scale of photovoltaic system. Ethernet is a high speed wired communication technology that is used widely in industrial and automatic applications. Together Zigbee and Ethernet bring to us a real-time communication solution for the system. In the experiment prototype of this paper, we use the CC2530ZNP-Mini Kit to create a simple network includes one coordinate and one end device for the first step. The end device was configured to get current and voltage values from a 3-phase grid-connected solar inverter 800Wpk and then sends the values to the coordinate. After the coordinate received data, it would send them to an Ethernet controller board. To display the data through Ethernet, we embedded a web server on the Ethernet controller board. By this way, the data was easy to visualize and supervised by using any web browser.

Abstract:
An increasing number of intelligent transportation systems- (ITS-) after-market systems present a set of in-vehicle installation and use problems relatively unique in the history of automobile use. Many automobile manufacturers would like to offer these new state-of-the-art devices to customers, but are hampered by the current design cycle of new cars. While automobile manufacturers are indeed using multiplex buses [the automotive equivalent of a computer local area network (LAN)], problems remain because manufacturers are not converging on a single bus standard. A new dual-bus architecture to address these problems is presented with an in-vehicle information system (IVIS) research platform on which the principles embodied in the ITS data bus architecture can be evaluated. The dual-bus architecture has been embodied in a proposed Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standard, with support from both automobile and consumer electronics manufacturers. The architecture and a reference model for the interfaces and protocols of the new bus are presented and described. The goals of the ITS data bus are to be inexpensive and easy to install, and to provide for safe and secure functioning. These high-level goals are embodied in the proposed standard. The IVIS development platform comprises a number of personal computers (PCs) linked via ethernet LAN, with a high-end PC serving as the IVIS computer. In this LAN, actual devices can be inserted in place of the original PC that emulated them. This platform will serve as the development and test bed for an ITS data bus conformity test, the SAE standard for which is also being developed.

Abstract:
We consider routing in multiple-bus systems with faulty nodes and buses. A cube-based multiple-bus system is used as an example to demonstrate our approach. In this system, processors are partitioned into two sets based on the definition of a bipartite graph, one set is called a processor set and the other one becomes a bus set. A fault-tolerant routing scheme is proposed based on limited global information of fault distribution captured by safety level which is an integer associated with each processor and bus. A safety level is an approximated measure of the number and distribution of faulty components in the neighborhood. Each processor (also called node) is considered as an active entity while each bus is viewed as a passive one. The safety level of each bus is calculated by one of its adjacent nodes. Optimal routing between two nodes is guaranteed if the safety level of the source node is no less than the Hamming distance between the source and destination nodes. The proposed scheme is the first attempt to address fault-tolerant communication in a multiple-bus system with limited global fault information.
