Svensson, Karolina, and Nathalie Myhre. "Insights about the Swedish ethical consumer : a study on consumer behavoiur towards fairtrade coffee."

Abstract:
Fairtrade is one way to reach sustainable development in emerging countries, for example South America and Africa. Lately, Fairtrade has become highlighted and popular. This has led to studies on consumers’ view on Fairtrade, for instance in Belgium and America. Among the previous studies, the ethical consumer has been identified. At the moment, there is no research done in Sweden on who the Swedish Ethical Consumer is, regarding purchases of Fairtrade coffee. Therefore, with this thesis we want to fill the research gap on identifying the Swedish Ethical Consumer and which factors that influence him or her in the purchase decision. The study was performed on Swedish coffee consumers on Facebook. Different factors such as consumer related, environmental related, and product related, are measured to see if there is any relationship between these factors and how they influence the Swedish Ethical Consumer. With help from a snowball sampling technique and a self-administrated survey, 111 answers were collected. From that, we could identify the Swedish Ethical Consumer, given this sample. The result showed that product and demographics seemed to be the most affecting factors on ethical consumer behaviour. For this sample, brand (taste) of the product was by far the most popular product related factor to consider when buying coffee. From the environmental factors, the demographics were of greatest matter. Attitudes and knowledge were the most important consumer related factors. It seems like a majority of the respondents who think that Fairtrade is important (attitudes) also do buy Fairtrade coffee. Also, the respondents who possess much information (knowledge) about it tend to buy it. This study contributes to fill the gap in the lack of studies of Swedish Ethical Consumer behaviour. The conclusions can be used as a guideline and tool for companies to brand a new product. It could also be helpful for organisations to provide more information about Fairtrade to the consumers.

Hanel, Vanessa K., and University of Lethbridge Faculty of Management. "Socially conscious consumer behaviour : the role of ethical self-identity in the use of mental accounting / Vanessa K. Hanel." Thesis, Lethbridge, Alta. : University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Management, 2010, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10133/2598.

Full text
Abstract:
Consumers are becoming more socially conscious in their purchasing behaviours (Freestone & McGoldrick, 2008), and for some it is becoming a more salient aspect of buying criteria (Memery et al., 2005). Individuals‟ conceptions of themselves can influence behaviour (Aquino et al., 2009). An on-line experiment demonstrated the importance of consumers' ethical self-identity (ESI) in the mental processing of socially conscious consumer decisions. Findings reveal not only how individuals process decisions, but how they react to external stimuli. This study categorizes consumers into three levels of ESI, and shows differences and similarities between them. Individuals who feel an ethical orientation is part of their core self-identity were more inclined to mentally consult upon their previous behaviours when considering their current choice. Additional findings indicate that an assimilation effect took place; priming the environment led to more environmental purchase intentions (Herr, 1989). This study provides important insight into socially conscious consumer behaviour.

James, Alana. "Influencing ethical fashion consumer behaviour : a study of UK high street retailers." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2015. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/29612/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the process of ethical fashion purchasing through a qualitative research approach, to find insights to improve the provision and purchasing of socially responsible fashion on the UK high street. This was achieved through the investigation of both the consumers that purchase womens wear at a mid market level, but also the retailers who provide the merchandise. The relationship between these two parties was explored, with the communication methods also being investigated. Furthermore, the influence the communication of retailer Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) messages had on the final purchasing behaviour was also a key research area. This distinctive two-sided perspective was utilised to contribute to the creation of new knowledge in the area of ethical fashion purchasing behaviour, and consequently provide new perceptions of how positive, social changes can occur in the fashion industry. Much of the previous ethical fashion purchasing research has been criticized for several reasons including methodological weaknesses, survey instruments potentially overstating the importance of ethical issues, as well as participants having little to no incentive to answer truthfully (Auger and Devinney, 2007). As a result, researchers in this field have suggested that broader, more rigorous data collection tools need to be developed in order to advance this area of research (Dickson, 2011). With this in mind, a mixed method or bricolage approach (Kincheloe and Berry, 2004) was used to not only overcome the methodological issues identified, but to also address the knowledge gaps in a creative and innovative way (Bremner and Yee, 2011). As a consequence of using this approach, the interplay of data collection and analysis has resulted in an iterative process throughout the research undertaken. This iterative nature facilitated a five-stage data collection process, which included an ethnographic style case study with a major high street retailer, a consumer focus group and additional retailer, semistructured interviews. Between each of the five research stages, analysis and reflection took place, facilitating the development of the next data collection method. When addressing the study’s over-arching question: what influences ethical fashion purchasing, several factors were identified from both a consumer and a retailer perspective. It was found that whilst consumers do have a certain level of knowledge regarding social issues in the garment supply chain, they rarely implement this knowledge during their purchasing behaviour. The retailers surveyed, being evidenced in several of the additional interviews with CSR representatives, also identified this. However this lack of cohesion between consumer intentions and actual behaviour was found to be heavily influenced by the communication of CSR information from retailers to their customers. As a result, consumers were found to have a lack of understanding of social issues within the garment supply chain. Thus, it was concluded that the contribution to knowledge that this work makes is that an increase of retailer CSR communication, will aid in the development of a relationship between the consumer and supplier to increase connectivity, understanding and empathy, in order to influence ethical fashion purchasing. However, it is paramount that this CSR information is delivered in a simple way, in order for it to be understood by consumers. This was identified as an important factor due to a fundamental misunderstanding found in consumer understanding of the term ethical, and distinguishing this from closely related sustainable connotations. The approach and methodology utilised in this study was designed to address the problems identified in a new and innovative way, in order to lead to a series of new insights. The study of both the retailer and consumer simultaneously and the utilisation of creative methods attempted to provide a unique approach in dealing with the methodological issues previously mentioned. Due to the nature of the research, it has in the past been approached from a business or marketing perspective, however this study used creative skills and tools commonly used in design research. The value of this research has been evidenced in a results table, where the problems identified were addressed through a series of incremental stages towards change. These have been broken down into long and short-term changes, with the aim to gradually move the industry towards a more socially responsible future.

Minkova, Iliana, and Lozano Ana Isabel Castellanos. "The Ethical Colour : Exploring the intention-behaviour (I-B) gap among Generation Y women with relation to ethical makeup." Thesis, Högskolan i Jönköping, Internationella Handelshögskolan, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-43961.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Makeup has become the fastest‐growing beauty category in the last years, partly due to the effects of the digitalisation, and the growing importance conferred upon the digital image. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the business practices behind the goods they buy, and the impact of their purchases on the environment, and the human and animal welfare. However, not always ethical intentions are translated into purchases. This gap between the intention and the actual behaviour, also known as “I-B gap”, has been researched within the sectors of food or clothing; however, it remains unexplored in the case of makeup. Purpose: This thesis aims to explore the main reasons leading to the I-B gap in reference to ethical makeup. Method: An exploratory qualitative study based on 14 semi-structured interviews was conducted among European millennial females. Conclusions: The yawning gap existing between intention and behaviour towards ethical makeup is shown in this paper, as well as the factors that explain it. Despite the positive overall attitude and intention of the sample towards such products, the general lack of awareness associated with the ethical makeup is evidenced. Furthermore, the store environment, ranging from the products display and visibility, to the customer service, and the samples’ trial availability, exert a major influence on purchase. In addition, the brand or product attachment may play a crucial role in the final purchase decision. More specifically, this research reveals that consumers appeared to remain loyal towards makeup products that they are already satisfied and familiar with. These aspects seem to represent a challenge to overcome by ethical makeup companies, since above the ethical credentials, customers value other aspects such as the effectiveness, the suitability of the product with the skin type, the quality-price balance, the availability or the variety.

Abstract:
This study comprises what triggers ethical consumption, based on personality archetypes. It has been conducted through semi-structured interviews. The respondents were students at Linnaeus University in the ages of 20-27. The personality archetypes were mapped through a conceptual model, based on the foundations of a personality; ego or social, with tendencies of having freedom or order characteristics. The respondent’s ethical behaviour was mapped in a conceptual model, then analysed in accordance with existing personalities. The results show differences in what triggers consumers’ behaviour in ethical consumption and that the individual’s personality determines to what extent.

Abstract:
Purpose Ethical elaboration is an aspect of product involvement and this research examines the relationship between involvement and ethical consumption providing a more holistic understanding of ethical decision-making. This paper identifies antecedents of both low and high involvement ethical product decision-making at farmers’ markets, and with sustainable and energy efficient features in the housing market, respectively. Design/methodology/approach These aims are achieved through semi-structured and in-depth interviews with consumers and sellers of ethical products across low and high involvement domains. Findings The empirical investigation reveals new insights into the constructs considered when purchasing high involvement ethical products. Barriers are discussed and findings examine the relationships between trust, information, ethical motivation and signalling. Research implications A research process framework for the study of ethical decision-making is presented, demonstrating that constructs are approached differently between involvement levels. A conceptual model providing steps for transferring knowledge gained from the research to practice is also developed. Practical implications This research aids in the dispersion of information among stakeholders so that sustainability and energy efficiency can be part of the standard real estate conversation. Social implications Sustainability and energy efficiency (SEE) housing is seen as a niche market and this research will help alter the behaviour of the stakeholders in order to incentivise consumers to change their purchase patterns to include SEE features. Originality/value Most of the work on ethical consumption deals with low-involvement products. This study addresses high-involvement ethical consumption within the housing market through a qualitative approach.

Abstract:
Influencer marketing has an unethical side that was important for us to talk about. Thisstudy’s objective was to understand how impactful it was regarding the consumer and how itcould be really bad for a company to use this type of marketing in an unethical way. Theresearch then permitted us to investigate, see and understand consumer’s point of view onthis topic, especially thanks to the interviews that were conducted. The findings were varied, but most of the people that were asked about it were positive about the fact that unethicalpromotions impacted their behavior towards the brands in a bad way. This is the reason whycompanies must choose wisely the influencers they chose to use to promote their brands onsocial media. Indeed, as their name suggests, they influence their followers. That is thereason why they must be ethically correct.

Abstract:
The relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and consumer attitudes has been investigated in previous research; however, empirically there is no studies deliberate the role of consumer ethics in order to achieve the CSR, that is, to achieve greater CSR, there is a need to be accompanied with consumer ethics. Therefore, the emergence of consumer ethical behaviour has brought a new perspective to determining the influences of CSR on consumer attitudes. Based on The Theory of Planned Behaviour and Vitell-Hunt theory, this study aims to examine the link between CSR and consumer ethical behaviour, and its influences on consumer attitudes. In order to address the aim, this study explores the relationship between CSR from the philanthropic perspective, and consumers' ethical behaviour. It also determines the extent to which CSR affects brand trust and consumer affective behavioural attitudes. Finally, it examines the role of consumers' ethical behaviour in influencing consumers' attitudes alongside CSR. To address these objectives, this study adopted positivism research philosophy, using a quantitative survey method. The data were collected from consumers who make purchases from the retail sector in the UK. A self-administered questionnaire was developed based on the previous literature. Then, 500 questionnaires were distributed, of which 350 were completed and used for the final analysis. Multivariate analysis was employed, with the questionnaires analysed using a covariance-based structural equation modelling (SEM) approach. The findings reveal that as hypothesized, CSR 'philanthropy' is significantly associated with consumer ethical behaviour; however, this study reveals a negative relationship between them. This study also hypothesized that philanthropic retailers have an influence on (a) consumer affective attitudes and (b) consumer behavioural attitudes. This study does not support the hypothesized relationship between philanthropy and (a) consumer affective attitudes or (b) consumer behavioural attitudes. However, the study identifies a positive relationship between philanthropy and brand trust. Consumers' ethical behaviour is not statistically significantly related to brand trust or consumer affective attitudes. However, the relationship between consumer ethical behaviour and consumer behavioural attitudes is found to be statistically significant. Moreover, the study demonstrates a positive relationship between brand trust and consumer behavioural attitudes, and that consumer affective attitudes mediate this relationship. This study offers a number of theoretical contributions to the literature on CSR and consumer ethics. First, the important contribution lies in the attempt to explore the relationship between CSR and consumers' ethical behaviour. This study unexpectedly, discovers the negative relationship between CSR and consumers' ethical behaviour. The possible explanation is that when consumers perceive the company to behave philanthropically, they are less likely to evaluate themselves as ethical because they may attribute their ethical behaviour to the company's perceived philanthropic behaviours. This study further highlights the positive relationship between consumers' ethical behaviour and their behavioural attitude. The second contribution lies in the relationship between CSR and consumers' responses. In line with previous studies (e.g. Willmott 2003; Hustvedt 2014; Singh et al. 2012), this study concurs that CSR positively affects consumers' brand trust. However, the relationship between CSR and consumers' attitudes is not statistically significant. Instead, this study highlights the important role of brand trust; that is, based on this finding, brand trust is the key driver of both consumers' affective and behaviour attitudes. Third, this study discovers the partially mediating role of consumers' affective attitude on the link between brand trust and behavioural attitude; which seems to be an essential sub-process regulating the effect of brand trust on consumer behavioural attitudes. This study also has practical implications. Firstly, retailers are recommended to effectively communicate their philanthropic activities to consumers in order to enhance their brand trust. It is particularly important that they also aim at influencing consumers' trust in their brand because it is the brand trust that would positively affect their purchasing decision. The final recommendation is that management should focus their CSR communication on the ethical consumer segment because ethical consumers show strong intention to purchase from a socially responsible company.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the usage behaviour of legal and illegal digital music services on the internet and derive a theoretical model that includes the determinants for these behaviours. Based on this model, hidden heterogeneity will be examined amongst the sample population to extract different user-groups with similar attitudes, perceptions and behaviours and to derive and describe these different customer segments of digital music consumers. Design/methodology/approach: A theoretical framework has been developed through a synthesis of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), Unified Theory of Usage and Acceptance of Technology (UTAUT) and ethical decision making theories. A structured self- completion online-questionnaire has been conducted in Germany and Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) has been applied to analyse and validate the theoretical model. Hidden heterogeneity has been analysed using the Finite Mixture (FIMIX) algorithm for PLS-SEM to derive three different customer segments amongst the sample population. Findings: The cause-and-effect model has been proven valid and has revealed the most important antecedents of the usage of legal vs. illegal digital music services on the internet: performance expectancy, facilitating conditions, habit and usage behaviour, perceived risks and benefits, and attitudes including moral and ethical considerations. Besides this, three different segments of customers have been identified, which show different values, opinions and behaviours with the other segments, but homogeneous within the segments. The segments are: Legal Power-Users, Digital Laggards and Young Indifferents. Practical implications: The cause-and-effect model and the three customer segments inform practice for a better understanding of the digital music customer and provide important inputs for the development of new products and services, positioning of the services and communication strategies for current and future services as well as policy makers. Originality/value: Two research gaps have been closed: (1) newer legal digital music services have hardly been examined in the literature and (2) only student samples have been used in digital piracy studies. This study is the first to fill both gaps in expanding the scope explicitly to legal vs. illegal services and to a sample population beyond students. The synthesis of theoretical models to a more comprehensive model to understand the usage and determinants of digital music services has been created. The identification of the three customer segments with the FIMIX algorithm and their real-life description is a contribution to practice, knowledge and methodology. Additionally the research shows, that the evaluation of hidden heterogeneity enriches the pure SEM-analysis, has even improved the evaluation of the overall model and should be a new standard for future SEM-research.

Westberg, Ekerljung Frida, and Rebecca Jansson. Thesis, Högskolan i Borås, Institutionen Textilhögskolan, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hb:diva-16826.

Full text
Abstract:
The textile and fashion industry increasingly gain attention for not being a sustainable industry. As a result a range of fashion brands have been launched. They consider the impact on the environment and people within the production, why the products from these producers are called ethical fashion. The brands and the stores offering ethical fashion have customers who consider ethical aspects when they buy clothes, so called ethical consumers.Since research on Swedish ethical consumers is limited the authors of this thesis found it interesting to take a closer look at them. Previous research has noticed a gap between the ethical consumers’ attitude towards ethical fashion and their actual consumer behaviour, an attitude-behaviour gap.The purpose of this thesis is to understand, describe and explain what directs the Swedish ethical consumer's choice to buy or not to buy ethical fashion clothes, in order to increase the understanding of how companies can reduce the existing attitude- behaviour gap.A study with a qualitative approach has been carried out. The aim was not to be able to give answers or make any generalization, instead to understand the meaning behind the group of ethical consumers whose behaviour have been studied. For the gathering of empirical data, focus groups and unstructured interviews have been used as method. The empirical data has been analyzed using relevant background information, literature on the topic, previous research and theories about consumer behaviour, specifically ethical consumer behaviour. The outcome from the empirical data indicates that ethical consumers are characterized by being empathetic and to care more about the well-being of their environment than their personal financial gain. Their intentions are to buy ethical clothes, however this study support previous studies which have shown that ethical consumers not always act according to their ethical intentions. For ethical consumers, just like regular consumers, price and design are factors that have impact on their buying decisions. This qualitative study indicates that the ethical consumer buy ethical products when the products match their needs and when they have an interest in the product itself. The quantity of knowledge about the ethical problems increases the chance that the consumer will buy ethical products, but if information about the products and the retailers is not available there is a risk that the ethical consumer chooses other products instead of ethical ones. It is essential for companies to realize the importance of being available and making their products attractive. The study suggests that companies, both with and without ethical concepts, need to have good knowledge about their customers. Also the ethical consumers have different needs depending on where in life they are. The products and how marketing is used on them must therefore be adjusted accordingly to this.

Hogan, Stephen P. "Creating parental trust in children's toy brands : the antecedents and dimensions of trustworthy behaviour of toy companies." Thesis, Brunel University, 2006. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5332.

Full text
Abstract:
Based around a case study of the traditional toy industry, the research examines how companies create trust with parents, the main toy purchasers, and the importance of ethical behaviour in trust development when a vulnerable community is involved. Previous literature has revealed that trust leads to mutually beneficial company-consumer relationships but scholars have failed to agree on its definition, dimensions or measurement due to its complexity, diversity and intangibility. Few have distinguished between 'trustworthiness' as a moral quality of organisations and 'trust', which is a consumer judgement about companies and brands, made as part of their purchase deliberations. A review of the literature led to the development of a framework of trustworthy behaviour identifying five sets of antecedents (organisational, individual, control, relational and branding factors) and four key dimensions with related variables - 'Integrity' and 'Benevolence', relating to ethical constructs and 'Commitment' and 'Satisfaction', relating to organisational constructs. The model was then substantiated through qualitative research with a sample of senior managers in 12 leading toy companies and other stakeholders including industry body representatives, retailers and parents. The findings revealed that in a challenging economic climate, trust in toy companies is being driven principally by the marketing offer and by external influencers such as legislators, retailers, licensors, and the media. Examples of good ethical practices were identified, although often unnoticed by consumers, and the worthier companies, for whom trustworthiness was important, appeared to be faring less well economically than companies selling third party brands. Consumers' trust was significant in the preschool market but diminished in importance as children matured when their influence overrode parents' more rational purchase considerations. The research revealed a paradox that parents as well as children are vulnerable consumers who are often bypassed in the marketing process. Whatever children's consumer rights, there will always be a lack of trust in the industry whilst young children rather than parents are so blatantly targeted.

Mokhlis, Safiek. "The influence of religion on retail patronage behaviour in Malaysia." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/87.

Full text
Abstract:
Although culture and subcultural norms have been subjected to increased scrutiny in recent years as explanatory constructs for various dimensions of consumer behaviours, religion as a subsystem of culture has received only slight attention in the marketing literature. The purpose of this study was to examine the religious influences on some selected aspects of consumer behaviour. Utilising consumer behaviour model of retail patronage as a framework, religious influences on the following aspects of consumer behaviour were examined: lifestyle, use of information source, shopping orientation, store attribute importance and store patronage. Consistent with previous research, religion was viewed from two different perspectives namely religious affiliation and religiosity. Religious affiliation is the adherence of individuals to a particular religious group while religiosity, or religious commitment, is the degree in which beliefs in specific religious values and ideals are espoused and practiced by an individual. Fieldwork for this study was carried out in Malaysia where the populace contains sizable percentages of adherents to four of the world’s leading religions, namely Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity. The research data was collected by means of a survey through personal interviews with a structured questionnaire. Out of three hundred respondents targeted, two hundred and twenty-six questionnaires were deemed usable for statistical analysis. Statistical tests were calculated using statistical procedures of SPSS version 11.5. The main statistical techniques used include exploratory factor analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), multivariate ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis. Findings indicated significant differences between religious affiliation groups in the areas of lifestyle, store attributes and store patronage. Significant differences between religiosity groups were also revealed in the areas of lifestyle, information source, shopping orientation and importance of store attributes. The usefulness of religious variables was further tested using multiple linear regression analysis with demographics and lifestyles were entered as extraneous variables. Results indicated that when the effect of other predictor variables were explicitly controlled (i.e. held constant) during the regression analysis, religious affiliation appeared to influence the perceived importance of store attributes. Intrapersonal religiosity, when controlling for the effect of other predictor variables, appeared to influence the use of information source, shopping orientation and perceived importance of store attributes. Similarly, interpersonal religiosity, when controlling for the effect of other predictor variables, was found to influence the use of information source, shopping orientation and importance of store attributes. Overall, findings indicated that consumer religiosity, as compared to religious affiliation, was more useful in predicting aspects of retail patronage activities. Thus it is suggested that religiosity variable should be given consideration in future patronage behaviour model building and research efforts. The implications of these results for theories of consumer behaviour along with the practical implications of the findings were discussed and opportunities for future research were provided.

Abstract:
Background: The ethical clothing industry is subject to a persistent growth, and consumers become increasingly aware of where products come from, how they are produced and how they impact the environment and animals. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyse which values consumers have about ethically produced materials within the fashion industry, and how consumers act in purchasing decision. It is of interest to investigate which factors are decisive in ethical consumption to normalize the trend of ethical consumption. Research questions: - Which factors are decisive in consumer ethical purchasing decisions? - Do ethical values of consumers contradict their purchasing behaviour for shoes and bags? Method: Empirical data was collected through fifteen unique semi-structured interviews. Selected interviewees defined themselves as interested in fashion and their ages ranged 20-27years old. The interviews were conducted primarily over the internet through services such as Facebook video-chat and Google Meet video communication. The material was then compiled with a thematic analytic method. The material was quantified and divided into the following three sub-categories: (1) purchasing behaviour; (2) ethical values; and (3) animal welfare. Conclusion: The study finds that consumers value style and image the most in a purchasing decision, first runner up was perceived value, second runner up was comfort, and third runner up was environmental and social responsibility. The study also concludes that the pronounced ethical values of consumers contradict their actual behaviour. Consumers state they value animal welfare and ethical factors highly, but when it comes to their actual purchasing decisions factors such as style, image and perceived value are more decisive.

Abstract:
The Indian economy has grown over the last 10 years with new jobs created in the ITES sector, Biomedical, Automotive engineering, Apparel manufacturing and Civil engineering. The growth is strongly led by Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES); this is supported by the education sector with increase in the number of students enrolling for higher education and large numbers of students graduating every year thus creating a large pool of technical and managerial manpower. The working class people segment has grown since the economic growth and it has benefited middle class and upper middle class people. Due to the increase in the number of working people and substantial raise in income, spending power has increased over the years, and particularly the young Indians in the age of 15 – 25 like to shop more. The Government of India has laid down strict rules to protect the environment and avoiding child labor but there is no legality followed by companies in providing an ethical environment in means of working time and salary. The increase in food, energy and real estate costs makes people’s lives more difficult at this time. Are we going to follow the western countries and repeat the same mistake leading to a standstill? As resources are getting to near exhaustion, now is the time to think and ask ourselves question of what we are doing and justify ensuring that we buy only for our needs. This study focuses on the consumer behavior of young Indians in the age of 15 – 25 to understand and know their perception towards spending and to show a new path for the society and the industry for a sustainable environment.

Abstract:
A focus group and experiment were conducted to test the effects of psychological distance on participant affect, intentions, and behaviours in the realm of ethical consumption. Construal Level Theory (Liberman and Trope, 1998) posits that psychologically-near concepts are viewed differently than their psychologically-far counterparts, and this framework was used to guide the development of predictions relating to four dimensions of distance: temporal, spatial, social, and hypothetical. The study revealed that participants exhibit significantly higher levels of affect and intention when presented stimuli involve psychologically near impacts rather than psychologically-far impacts. This finding did not carry over into actual behaviour, however. Subject disposition toward psychological distance was measured but was found to not impact affect, intentions, or behaviour. Perceived Consumer Effectiveness (Kinnear, Taylor, & Ahmed, 1974) was found to be an important predictor of behaviour.

Abstract:
The care for the environment has been a hot topic during the last fifteen years. Ecological and Fairtrade products made from sustainable materials and methods can be found in almost every store. It seems like awareness regarding our environmental impact has increased and therefore changed our purchase behavior. The awareness has also created pressure on the companies to behave in an ethical manner, if the consumers feel that their ethical needs are not acknowledged, they will tend to stop purchasing products from that company. In this new aware society there is a new player that in a few years will make up the new buying force. Generation Z is individuals born after 1995 and is expected to bring new demands to the market. The purpose of this thesis is to study if ethical products and ethical consumption have an effect on the buying behavior of Generation Z. To better understand if the ethical awareness affect the purchase behavior of Generation Z and if they are willing to boycott companies that misbehaves, theory within the fields of CSR, consumer behavior and ethical consumption has been collected to form questions for a survey. The findings show that the ethical awareness do not affect the purchase behavior of Generation Z, however there is discovered attributes such as ethical profile that affect the frequency of purchases. The findings also show that Generation Z will actively boycott a company if that company misbehaves.

Tetley, Sarah. "Why the Big 5? : understanding UK seafood consumer behaviour." Thesis, University of Kent, 2016. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/54790/.

Full text
Abstract:
UK consumers bought just under 500 thousand tonnes of seafood in 2010, at a cost of £3.8bn. Despite rising prices, consumption is on a general upwards path, with the average UK adult now eating 2% more seafood than they would have eaten a generation ago, and demand predicted to grow by a further 17% by 2030. However, this demand is increasingly restricted to a narrow range of imported and wild-caught species (Cod, Haddock, Tuna) and farmed products (Salmon and Prawns) over locally-available species with the consequence that between 60% and 80% of UK domestic landings are currently exported and 80% of all the seafood eaten in the UK is one of either Cod, Haddock, Salmon, Tuna or Prawns – the so-called Big 5. The shortage of local markets for native fish species is arguably reducing the relative viability of small scale, over large-scale, fisheries in the UK. It also increases pressure upon wild stocks of commercially valuable species and is driving the rapid expansion of fish-farming operations which can have negative environmental and social implications. Considering the above, it is suggested that UK consumers could make a positive contribution to the UK economy and marine environment if they chose to buy native, locally-caught species, over farmed and exotic imports. In order to achieve this, however, significant behavioural change would need to take place; and for behavioural change initiatives to be successful, it is argued that it is first necessary to understand why these consumption patterns have developed, i.e. Why the Big 5? Accepting that no single theory has been found that can fully explain behaviours from intentions, this research used mixed methods to develop a consumer-centric view of the full range of factors that might be driving these unsustainable consumption patterns. Regular consumers of seafood from four contrasting localities in England were recruited to complete surveys, maintain shopping diaries and to take part in group and one-to-one interviews to understand their reasons for eating seafood in general and the Big 5 in particular. Drawing on the Literature on seafood consumption, demographic and geographic-induced differences in consumption were explored; and consumer understanding of, and concern for, the sustainability of their seafood was assessed. Retail behaviour was also examined by undertaking an on-line review of the seafood offered for sale by the UK’s five largest retailers. Consumers were generally ill informed and confused about the sustainability of their seafood and had little to no awareness of labelling. In their confusion/apathy, they tended to revert to habitual behaviours and safe choices tending towards the Big 5. They felt strongly that retailers should be making it easier for them to make sustainable choices. The evidence from this study is that Retail is failing in this respect. Interest in and demand for local seafood was very high, with consumers equating local with sustainable, even though the evidence to support this assertion is currently lacking. Consumer definitions of “local” and “sustainable” were found to vary from accepted policy and academic understanding, presenting the possibility of adding to consumer confusion when communicating about sustainable seafood; further, “sustainable” possessed negative connotations for these consumers who, in stark contrast to the average UK consumer, were found to score highly for Hedonism. In total, twenty eight distinct variables were identified as influencing unsustainable UK seafood consumer behaviour. Key amongst these were consumer ignorance/apathy regarding sustainability; retail behaviour; and habit – factors that are presented in the Trifold Model of Unsustainable Consumer Behaviour. This model brings much needed clarity to a complex and poorly understood area of consumer behaviour and marks a significant contribution to three areas of academic study: Sustainable Consumption; Consumer Behaviour; and Business Ethics. The Trifold Model is presented for further testing. Recommendations for policy and industry are highlighted as are areas for further research.

Abstract:
Researchers and companies are paying increasing attention to corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and the reaction to them by consumers. But despite such corporate efforts and an expanding literature exploring consumers' response to CSR, it remains unclear how consumers perceive CSR and which "Gestalt" consumers have in mind when considering CSR. Moreover, academics and managers lack a tool for measuring consumers' perceptions of CSR. This research explores consumers' perceptions of CSR and develops a measurement model for them. Based on qualitative data from interviews with managers and consumers, a conceptualization of consumers' perceptions of CSR is developed. Subsequently, this model is tested and validated on three large quantitative data sets. The conceptualization and the measurement scale help companies assess consumers' perceptions of CSR relative to their performance. They also enable managers to identify shortcomings in CSR engagement and/or communication. Finally, the paper discusses implications for marketing practice and future research. (authors' abstract)

Purpose: This study intends to deepen the knowledge about consumer behavior around ethical practices. An increasing body of research has analyzed whether and how consumers’ ethical concerns regarding business practices translates into actual behavior. Despite this burgeoning interest, consensus is far from granted. Whereas one strand of research claims that consumers are more willing to buy products embedded in an ethical environment, another strand asserts that consumers’ words and deeds do not match. Precisely, although consumers report having high ethical concerns and valuing brands whose practices follow ethical standards; they are not willing to purchase more products or services from these same brands. Design/Methodology: We conducted one experimental study manipulating three different ethics-related marketing appeals (donation, fair trade, control) to test these conflicting findings. Findings: In this study, consumers were more willing to purchase products associated with donations, but this difference vanished when we introduced a more realistic dependent variable (i.e., willingness to receive additional information via e-mail). Furthermore, fair trade appeals did not influence neither consumers’ purchase intentions nor their willingness to receive additional information. Practical implications are also discussed. Research limitations: The main limitation of this study is related to does not involve a totally realistic scenario and thus does not capture the real intentions of buying. A more realistic assessment of purchase intentions would avoid potential pitfalls of social desirability, creating a more accurate evaluation of the principal dependent variable. Practical and Social implications: By deepening the understanding of consumer ethical behavior, companies can evolve their offers delivering benefits to the consumer, to the business and to the collective well-being. Originality: Few studies related to Consumer Ethical Behavior were done using the experiment method and using also some specificities of the fashion Market.

Abstract:
How often have you walked around in the supermarket trying to decide what product by which brand to choose? The options are many. Some people look for the price tag while others are more influenced by the esthetic appeals of the packaging design. Some people might look for ethical or environmental aspects of the brand. The area of corporate social responsibility (CSR) interests many people today and is a growing concern. We found that consumers consider companies acting ethically while also new jobs among the most important responsibilities by firms today. These factors are making the purchase decision process even harder for consumers. Sweden is one of the most socially responsible countries in the world, making it important for Swedish companies to integrate CSR into the core of their businesses. One example of such integration is Fairtrade, a concept that has grown tremendously during the last decade, while the attention focused on socially responsible behavior by firms has increased. The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between Fairtrade and the purchase decision of consumers living in Sweden, to investigate the awareness and perception of Fairtrade and how that ultimately translates into making a purchasing decision. From this we developed the research question: “What factors influences Swedish consumers purchase decision in buying products from Fairtrade Sweden?” The target group of our research is young adults ages 18-30. The nature of our degree project is quantitative with a deductive approach. The research philosophy is objectivism since we do not intervene in any way as we observe the data collected from our survey. Furthermore a positivistic approach is used since we rely heavy on numbers and data rather than words. We received 158 participants in our survey. The theoretical framework consists of theories within the areas of CSR, branding, consumer attitudes-behavior and finally previous empirical studies about Fairtrade. From the theories we have developed a series of hypotheses, which we test statistically using independent-samples t-test and bivariate correlation tests. Statistical support for gender differences between men and women were found and also positive correlations between willingness to pay for Fairtrade products and how often participants purchase Fairtrade products were found. The findings from our research show that the 18-30 year old Swedish consumers find Fairtrade important and the general attitude towards Fairtrade is positive. Most consumers chose Fairtrade to help people and because it makes them feel good. The most common reasons why not to choice Fairtrade is because of the price or that the products simply cannot be found. Women are keener on purchasing and caring about Fairtrade products compared to men.

Abstract:
Neuromarketing is a new field of research, a mix between neuroscience, marketing, and psychology. With the help of brain research, neuromarketing has succeeded in identifying feelings and reactions which have benefited companies and helped them to construct efficient marketing strategies. Its effective tools and insights about consumer behavior have contributed to a growing optimism and usage. On the other side, neuromarketing has faced some criticism regarding vague guidelines and ethical issues concerning what should or should not be allowed. This study aims to investigate and analyze ethical dilemmas regarding messages and their influence with roots in neuromarketing from a consumer perspective. This thesis is based on a qualitative research strategy that aims to increase the understanding of phenomena and contexts as well as an insight into participants' perceptions of reality. The empirical material has been collected using semi-structured focusgroups and supplemented with scientific articles and literature. The findings of this study identify situations where neuromarketing and its strategies cross the ethical line. Heavy negative emotions and strong influence with an emphasis on indirect - and manipulative marketing are considered unethical. Furthermore, the results show that unethical behavior can be judged differently depending on the intention and the party involved. The conclusions shows that it is not possible to define a general boundary even though a couple of unethical actions have been identified.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how stakeholders’ view of sexual advertisement has been affected by the ‘#MeToo’-uprising and Time’s Up movement. A qualitative study has been conducted in order to gather information regarding stakeholders view of sexual appeal in advertising and how they have been affected by these movements. In this study, participants have been giving their thoughts and beliefs on this subject, which later on have been compared and analyzed in relation with existing theories. The findings of this study indicates an increased resistance to sexual advertising by the society due to the ‘#MeToo’-uprising and Time’s Up. Although, the resistance was greater among females than by males in this study. This is potentially due to the fact that women are the ones who constantly are being objectified in advertisement today, and throughout history. The practical implications of this thesis is that it could be to use for marketing firms who are engaged in advertising which contains sexual elements to better understand how ‘#MeToo’ and Time’s up have affected consumers’ view of sexual appeal in advertising. The original value of the study is new insights regarding consumers’ view of sexual appeal in advertisement as an effect of the ‘#MeToo’-uprising and the Time’s Up movement, which not have been studied before.

Abstract:
Consumers’ intentions don’t always result in actions. This study focuses on ethical consumers in order to investigate why a gap between intention and action occur. Based on this an improved understanding for the underlying factors that impact buying behaviour is created. A delimitation has been made to focus this study on retail apparel and ethical and sustainable clothes. Some factors have been seen to be of bigger importance to the gap than others, such as price, lack of information and convenience. The results also imply that there is a missing trust from the consumers’ point of view when it comes to trusting what is communicated about ethical and sustainable work within the clothing industry.

Abstract:
In recent years, second-hand products have received more attention and the demand for secondhand products has increased. In line with the demand for second-hand products, ethical consumption has also increased. There have been earlier studies done on ethical consumption and the drivers of its consumers. Meanwhile, there is a lack in the research regarding what it is that drives and motivates consumers to purchase second-hand products. The purpose of this study was to explore what drives and motivates consumers to shop second-hand products. The study used a qualitative method. The data was collected through interviews with employees and volunteers at second-hand stores, and through a focus group with second-hand customers. The empirical findings show that there are various drivers and motivations for second-hand consumption. However, there are some drivers and motivations which are more common than others. The conclusion is that consumers are motivated and driven by various factors. They are motivated by consumer responsibility, decrease of impulse purchases and reference groups. They are driven by dissonance, self-fulfillment, thrill of the hunt and finding unique products.

Abstract:
This study examines how consumers reason and their opinions about personal data collection online. Its focus is to investigate whether consumers consider online data collection as an issue with moral implications, and if these are unethical. This focus is partly motivated by the contradiction between consumers’ stated opinions and actual behavior, which differ. To meet its purpose, the study poses the research question How is personal data collection and its prevalence online perceived and motivated by consumers?. The theoretical framework consists of the Issue-Contingent Model of Ethical Decision-Making by Jones (1991), thus putting the model to use in a new context. Collection of data for the study was done by conducting focus groups, since Jones’ model places ethical decision- making in a social context. The results of the study showed that consumers acknowledge both positive and negative aspects of online data collection, but the majority of them do not consider this data collection to be unethical. This result confirms partly the behaviour that consumers already display, but does not explain why their stated opinions do not match this. Thus, this study can be seen as an initial attempt at clarifying consumer reasoning on personal data collection online, with potential for future studies to further investigate and understand consumer online behaviour.
Studiens data samlades in genom fokusgrupper.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the antecedents and reinforcements of fairtrade purchase intention and to examine the effect of reporting good fairtrade practices on consumers’ punishment behavior. A stratified sample of 240 English-speaking, American, adult subjects was collected online.

First, the Behavioral Perspective Model (BPM) (Foxall, G., 2007) was modified and four manipulations varying luxury/commodity product type and open/closed purchase settings were presented. The results of paired-sample t-tests demonstrated closed purchase settings did not increase luxury purchase intention by itself. A split-plot ANOVA combining closed setting and the participant’s fairtrade learning history did not produce significant results, but post-hoc testing revealed a significant effect of positive learning history on purchase intention. Two separate, repeated-measures ANOVA found that utilitarian reinforcement was not affected by purchase setting, but informational reinforcement was significantly increased by the presence of others.

Second, four manipulations of good/bad press events were presented without/without the firm’s fairtrade performance history mentioned in a news article. A two-way, between-subjects ANOVA produced insignificant results for the effect of information on willingness to pay. Importantly, the type of event significantly affected willingness to pay, accounting for 18% of the variation, with positive events generating higher willingness to pay than negative, regardless of whether fairtrade performance information was included.

This study suggested firms would benefit from including cues for the social reward aspect of luxury fairtrade purchasing in marketing efforts and from preventing missteps rather than bragging about past practices. Future research suggestions included further analyzing the effect of information on punishment of bad corporate actors, investigating the credibility of self-declaration of fairtrade certification versus independent certification labels, and incorporating the effect of culture into the BPM.

Abstract:
A proliferation of social movements and a large group of young, politically active individuals have pushed corporate firms to pay more attention to increase resource allocation to corporate social responsibility. As of now, corporate social responsibility refers to a wide definition of general efforts made by firms to support society through social impacts. A review of current literature on corporate social responsibility reveals a gap in the way the quality is calculated as well as does not take into account the influence of social movements in the past couple of years. This paper assesses the specific social and political justice positions that firms have taken and whether these positions have had an effect on financial performance given the more actively conscious consumer base. Tobin’s Q is used to quantify these effects and show that positive corporate social responsibility increases financial performance, supporting the hypothesis, while negative corporate social responsibility does not significantly affect financial performance. Future research recommends a closer look at the industry differences in the subject as well as a clearer definition of the variance between the different issues that constitute corporate social responsibility.

This study is focused on the ethical behavior of consumers in a broad perspective and under the expression Consumer Social Responsibility. This perspective, in the point of view of the marketing exchange system, has been neglected in academic research, since most such studies are dedicated to understand the offerer of the ex-change. The research is justified to the extent that the consumer is considered as one of the major agents of exchange system, with a potential of triggering unethical behavior that may disrupt the exchange system. It was developed a literature review addressing initially the subject ethics, from a macro point of view (as the general grounds of ethics) until issues in a micro sphere (emphasizing ethics applied in the context of marketing, the focus of our study). In addition, a theoretical construct about the Social Responsibility of the Consumer was conducted in order to understand how it was designed and operated by several authors over time. This process culminated in a reinterpretation of the construct through the integration of four dimensions de-fined (altruistic behavior, environmentally sustainable behavior, activist behavior and honest/ethical behavior). To enable the measurement of this construct, knowledge of the theory of scale development and of statistical procedures were applied to pro-pose the Consumer Social Responsibility Scale (ConSR Scale). The development of this scale of measurement required two data collections, the first with 202 students and just for the purpose of purifying the scale pool of items, and the second with 286 general consumers, with part of the data collected in two different Brazilian states, and part in the online version). The second sample had confirmatory purposes and allowed the consolidation of ConSR Scale in terms of reliability and validity. Addition-ally, the subject software piracy was studied and used as the empirical context for the first test of ConSR Scale, what required its inclusion as a topic in the literature re-view. Overall, the results indicated that the consumer social responsibility has very little influence, both in intention and practice of software piracy, and being honest be-havior dimension was the only one that presented statistically significantly influence. The theoretical and practical implications of research results were presented at and of the study, as well as limitations and recommendations for further research involv-ing the subjects here analyzed.

Abstract:
In contrast to fast fashion, which is tussled with mass production and with short lead times, the slow fashion movement has arrived and been adopted by several actors on the fashion scene. Slow fashion wants to inspire with a sustainable and timeless wardrobe that is well thought out and stands strong against the fashion world's quick turns and then, contribute so the consumption is not increasing in quantity but in quality. The problem in sustainable consumption is that consumers often choose not to act on the basis of a sustainable perspective even though their intention says it. Research show that there is a gap between what consumers intend to do and what they actually do, so called attitude-behavior gap. The aim of this study is to determine characteristics and examine customer behavior in connection with shopping slow fashion. Contemporary research has provided support for the gap and its existence, in our study we want to develop that result into further analysis. We want to investigate the theory about the attitude-behavior gap in contrast to slow fashion and its customer behavior and the reasons behind a purchase. Why does a consumer choose to buy slow fashion products and what is the profile of a slow fashion consumer? To understand and interpret the empirical material from this study, a theoretical framework was designed around three different theories, the Attitude-behavior gap, the Consumer culture theory and the theory of needs identification. The result of this study shows that reasons such as identification, price, timelessness and high product quality affect the consumer to buy slow fashion products. Further, it shows how these reasons will get prioritized and planned in a consumer journey within the buying process. The planning itself is through all stages by every respondent and the insights will be discussed further. Slow fashion are therefore consumed with engagement and a strong price acceptance. The study will continue in Swedish

Global sales of FT products have been growing consistently in the last years. According to the FLO, they jumped from less than €1 billion in 2004 to around €5,5 billion in 2013. Although the movement is still beginning in Brazil, some efforts aiming the institutionalization of FT are already being done. For instance, Schneider (2012) shows that there is a potential market for the FT products in Brazil, however the it is still not well developed. Therefore, there is a need to better understand the variables affecting purchase intention of these product. Past studies have identified factors that are considered predictors of Intention to Buy FT products. Considering these factors, this study aims to determine the variables that are most related to the consumers’ intention to buy and willingness to pay for FT products in Brazil. Based on the answers of 124 respondents, results show that intention to buy FT products in Brazil is linked to the consumers’ ethical consumption attitudes, product interest and quality, low skepticism and positive interest regarding the FT concept. The results also showed two antagonistic clusters of consumers regarding their attitudes. The group 'Activists' have positive attitudes, high intention to buy and willingness to pay. On the other hand, the 'Unbelievers' have negative attitudes, low intention to buy and are not willing to pay more. Based on the results of this study, organizations and individuals who aim to foster the FT market in Brazil can better understand the consumer and take more assertive marketing decisions, considering the relevance of factors affecting Intention to Buy, and differences between consumers.

Abstract:
The environmental organisation F/ACT Movement started as a reaction to the unsustainable business that the fashion industry represents. Their ambition is to change the fashion industry and give it a sustainable direction. They intend to accomplish this in collaboration with counties, universities and companies - but their prime audience is the consumers. The purpose of this essay was to study how F/ACT Movement engages their audience on social media around the subject sustainable fashion. In addition I aimed to examine how it can help them shape a strong community and long term public relationships. To attain the purpose of this study the theoretical framework includes theories of sustainability, consumption behavior and multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA). MCDA helped me analyze how F/ACT Movements structures language and visual text to engage the followers. Furthermore I added theories of social identity, communities on digital platforms and public relations. The method used in this essay was a multimodal discourse analysis, which intent is to study the meaning of how language and visual texts are constructed. Eight Instagram posts were studied and several patterns were found in the analysis. The results showed that F/ACT Movement engage their followers by using both a strong and confident language as well as visual symbols that benefits fashion as a sustainable lifestyle. Moreover they present sustainable facts and solutions which support the ideology of how a green lifestyle and consumption behavior can create a sustainable future. The results also showed that F/ACT Movement combines several different discourses in a complex way, which indicates that their vision is to contribute with a change on a social and cultural scale. Finally the results showed that F/ACT Movement values the dialog, community and relationship with their followers deeply. By inviting their followers to be a part of the group identity “sustainable consumers” they create a strong community. Furthermore they are communicating with an audience who already has knowledge and a high interest in sustainable fashion, which gives them a beneficial position to build strong public relations. In conclusion the study shows that F/ACT Movement uses a strong but friendly approach as a strategy to make the fashion industry a sustainable business.

The present work has as objective to analyse how religion/religiosity, as well as its impacts, and how those constructs can generate reactions positive or negatives ones in consumers behaviour. It is also being observed if there is a possible interrelation between the consumers behaviour and their decision process. To acquire those information, a quantitative approach was adopted as a methodological procedure, through the application of a structured survey with people from João Pessoa whose objective was to verify their behaviour as well as their perception of action illegality. The survey was organized in a two-leved model: in the first level, they were asked to answer questions about religion/religiosity; and in the second level, they answered questions about consumption and ethics. The sample for this study was of 194 respondents from survey face to face and internet. Overall, the tested hypotheses were partially valid showing a distorted speech between ethical and real consumption, with religion/religiousness being a non-totally determinant during the ethical consumption decision. It was concluded that although ethical consumption discourse fills the collective imagination up, there is a considerable discrepancy between the ethical discourse and its practice while related to the consumption practices in Brazil.

The present study aimed at understanding the behavior of individuals and groups in society in a context where social rules and/or legal matters are not clearly set: ethical consumption. If in relation to organizations ethical stance has been increasingly demanded by society in general, including rules related to corporate social responsibility, for consumers, the other actor in the process of buying, the demand for a responsible behavior is not yet a reality. We believe that marketing can contribute as a tool in understanding consumer behavior at the moment of deciding to purchase counterfeit products. This will occur by spreading ethical problems (as well as others that are understood by the social responsibility of the consumer) to be considered, leading to the awakening of the individual perception of the existence of the ethical dilemma in purchasing counterfeit videogames, as well as to the awareness of the many consequences for society in general, thus promoting actions that can be taken either by the companies involved in the sectors by the government or by society itself in order to find a balance in this process. Taking the above into consideration, this research is justified and becomes relevant due to the fact that it focused on understanding those issues. The analysis of the ethical behavior of consumers in relation to counterfeit videogames used materialism and ethical consumption (encompassed by the social responsibility of the consumer - SRCons) as references. Based upon this set of issues, the following research goal was proposed: to evaluate the social responsibility of the consumer and the degree of materialism in relation to the consumption of counterfeit videogames. A literature review was conducted where ethics issues were considered from a macro to a micro perspective by relating it to the marketing discipline. Then SRCons were discussed, which explored the possible dimensions of the construct components (altruistic behavior, environmentally sustainable behavior, activist behavior or engaged consumer, and ethical behavior or honest consumer). The scope of materialism as a motivator of behavior was also studied, since this construct is negatively related to collective as well as to ethical behavior. A brief background of the videogame market and its domestic supply chain was described in order to clarify its dynamics and therefore finally treat the case of counterfeit in the market of videogames. This process culminated in a proposal for a reinterpretation of that phenomenon based on the constructs of SRCons and Materialism. To enable the measurement of these constructs previously known and applied scales were used. The sample consisted of 225 consumers of videogames. Overall, the results indicated that SRCons and materialism do not influence consumer behavior in relation to counterfeit videogames, either in their intention, practice or in favorability. However, ethical behavior or honest consumer was the only dimension that slightly influenced it (statistically significant). At last a few considerations were woven, which answered the research problem and established objectives, containing the main results and their practical and theoretical implications, and recommendations for possible future research concerning the topic were made.

Abstract:
In the beginning of 2018, the fashion company H&M published a campaign with a dark-skinned boy wearing a sweater with the print “Coolest monkey in the jungle”. The picture was spread globally, H&M was criticised by the media and commentaries in both positive and negative terms was posted on the company’s own social channels. There after, H&M published three posts where they took responsibility for the incident and apologised to the public. Social media is characterised by an opened atmosphere where users and visitors freely can express their opinions, as well as it implicates a mined field for companies out of control for the information being spread. This study also discusses subjects as crisis management, unethical firm behaviour, consumers attitudes, and ethics from a consumer perspective. By conducting a content analysis of all commentaries directly related to H&M’s apology-posts, this study aims to map the clienteles perceptions of H&M as a brand after the incident and find signs of risks that might imply for the company. The results indicate a bisectional clientele where a considerate part expresses revolt and shows an establishment of negative attitudes towards H&M, where of an equivalent part expresses positive words of both the campaign and H&M as a company. The results can be explained by examining the clienteles ethical frame of reference and the theory of the buffering effect. The attitude changes identified within a substantial part of the clientele, in turn constitutes a risk for H&M by a weakened brand image, negative buying intentions and a viral spreading of information that could be unfavourable for the company.

Abstract:
Concern for design and the environment began in 1960. Since then, different approaches have emerged with the same objective, to seek to reduce the impact of the fashion sector on environmental and social degradation. Over time, different concepts related to sustainable fashion have emerged as ethical fashion, in which the social and environmental factor is included. Different companies in the decade of the 21st century are starting to leave behind the idea of ecological design and are focusing on a more complete concept that is sustainable fashion. Therefore, it is said that in this period that concept is born. Also, there are 2 groups of people who have responsible consumption habits and those who do not, so it is important to ask: Why do some consumers tend to consume sustainable products and why do others not?, Would buyers be willing to pay more for sustainable products? This work seeks to answer the questions raised, among others. This research seeks to understand the factors that influence the purchase decision of sustainable fashion consumers in Lima between 2015 and 2020. To this end, a study with a qualitative approach will be carried out in order to develop the proposed topic in depth. In this study, information will be collected through in-depth interviews.

Abstract:
The fast-fashion industry’s effect on the environment becomes more of a critical subject as the industry grows and dominates the apparel industry. Fast-fashion is based on frequently pushing new trends to consumers in order to increase sold volumes. This has led to overconsumption and fashion waste where large volumes of unsold garments are burned each year. Alongside of this, the industry has begun to understand the importance of ethical conduct and sustainability to positively affect or minimally harm humans and reduce their overall impact on the environment. Generation Z are said to be a finely tuned ecologically conscious generation, whilst being frequent shoppers of fast-fashion. This has led to the purpose of this study, to see how Swedish Generation Z’s increased ecological conscience affects their fashion consumption. This will be found by examining how shifts in thinking affects their attitudes towards fast-fashion retailers and their willingness to purchase sustainable and ethical fast-fashion. This, with the intent of addressing the behavioral-attitude gap that exists amongst sustainable fast-fashion, where consumers want sustainable fashion but do not purchase it. To answer this, the empirical foundation was obtained through 20 semi-structured video-interviews via telephones to give an understanding of Generation Z’s attitudes and behaviors surrounding sustainability and ethics in fast-fashion. Conclusions drawn were that there was an awareness of sustainability concerning fast-fashion, but that it was not something that changed their behaviors so much as their attitudes. What was found was a strong attitude about ethics in fast-fashion as the majority of participants felt that they were in the dark about what happens in the supply chain, and that they could do nothing about it. If companies would clearly define why something is more ethical, it was found that the majority would be willing to change their behaviors, and purchase ethical fast-fashion. Sustainability that was something they were aware of, was lacking in fast-fashion but something they compromised for price, whilst price was not such a sensitive subject regarding ethical fashion.

Abstract:
Collaborative consumption refers to a highly varied range of practices – including rentals, loans, gifts, bartering and sharing between consumers – that challenge the primacy of individual ownership. This rapidly growing phenomenon has been the subject of many research studies that have attempted to define, map or explain it by identifying its determinants or evaluating its impact. Few researchers have focused on the cultural background to this movement. That is the focus of this study, which studies collaborative consumption from an anthropological perspective, looking at the central question of our relationship with ownership. This research, rooted in Consumer Culture Theory (CCT), adopts a phenomenological approach centred on the meaning of consumer experiences. In empirical terms, it uses an ethnographic study conducted in three different fields that reflect the diversity of collaborative practices: co-housing, collaborative pleasure boating and clothes libraries. Its main theoretical foundation is the use of an original analytical framework – cosmological infrastructure, inspired by the work of Stosczkowski (2008) – which highlights the salient traits of a particular worldview. The results reveal the emergence, within a movement that remains largely consumeristic, of a counterculture that is comparable to voluntary simplicity and characterised by a new relationship with ownership, which, for proponents of this counterculture, is not only replaced by the notion of usage but is also charged with different meaning. We call this the “cosmology of alter-possession”. This research provides a better understanding of the behaviour of consumers who maintain an ambivalent relationship with possessions, somewhere between detachment and the search for lasting links, and aspire to more open and collective forms of ownership in response to the social and environmental challenges in a world with finite resources

Abstract:
Counterfeiting impacts upon all industries and economies and is a global phenomenon rapidly increasing worldwide. The thesis focuses on the non-deceptive counterfeit brands which resemble the genuine brands but are typically of lower quality in terms of performance and reliability. The pervasiveness of counterfeit brands’ manufacturing, their wide and easy availability makes it crucial to deal with their ever-increasing demand because of its importance in the context of consumers’ choice processes. The thesis explores the problem of counterfeit brands from a consumers’ perspective. The current research investigates the increase in the sales of counterfeit brands especially in developing countries, since the production, purchase and consumption of counterfeit brands are the disreputable attributes of Southeast Asian consumers; the research also attempts to identify the major factors motivating them to purchase these brands. Following an initial literature review of the counterfeiting phenomenon and marketing, the thesis details an empirical investigation. To achieve this purpose, the present research adopts a combination of qualitative (in-depth interviews) and quantitative (field-survey) research to examine the respondents in terms of how they view their own and other consumers’ use of counterfeit brands. In the proposed research model consumers’ self-congruity (SC), their perception about global brands (PGB)/about local brands (PLB), proneness to ethics (PE) and readiness to take social risk (RSR) have been identified as the predictors forming consumers’ attitude toward counterfeit brands (ACB) leading to their purchase intention (PI). Further consumers’ ethnocentrism plays its role as a moderator on the relationship between their perception about global brands and attitude toward counterfeit brands; similarly their collectivistic/individualistic orientation moderates the relationship between their readiness to take social risk and attitude toward counterfeit brands. Structural equation modeling has been used to measure the psychometric properties of the scale and to test the proposed hypotheses. The results show that consumers’ self-congruity, their perception about global brands and readiness to take social risk positively, whereas their proneness to ethics negatively influence their attitude toward counterfeit brands. Consumers’ perception about local brands is found to have no significant effect on their attitude toward counterfeit brands. Concerning the moderating variables it is found that the relationship between consumers’ perception about global brands and attitude toward counterfeit brands is stronger for low ethnocentric consumers and vice versa; further, contrary to our expectation, the relationship between consumers’ readiness to take social risk and attitude toward counterfeit brands was weaker for consumers having more collectivistic orientation. The research contributes a comprehensive understanding of the determinants of consumers’ choice process in a more complex context, i.e. where the markets abound in counterfeit brands, this will enrich the branding literature. The worldwide substantial growth of counterfeit brands has aroused concern and interest among the academic researchers and policy-makers. For the academicians and the managers’ understanding of illicit consumption activities, the research presents the implications. These highlight the factors that affect consumers’ proneness to counterfeit brands for the practitioners. For the academicians, they show that brand influence should not be ignored in exploring consumer behavior in the context of counterfeit brands

Abstract:
Consumption is part of the mechanisms that allow individuals to distinguish themselves, especially through culture, sports and food practices. Academics found that consumers express their ethics through their consumption choices. However, the definition of ethical consumption remains quite blurred in the field of consumer behavior and its measurement is not always appropriate. We propose in this research to clarify the concepts of consumer’s ethical sensibility (CES) and consumer’s ethical consumption behavior (ECB). Then, we build an appropriate conceptual framework to explore ethics in the field of consumption. First, a qualitative study was conducted with 14 in-depth interviews and then, in a second step, a quantitative data collection was conducted among 559 consumers. The results open interesting perspectives for academics and managers in the field of consumer ethics

Reducing the consumption of products that come from the informal economy and educate consumers on what regards to its dangers have been imperative not only for government agencies, but also private organizations and non-governmental institutions that value an improvement business environment. Nonetheless, in spite of the appeal made for consumers not to purchase products from the informal market, numerous informal outlets can be noticed. In this context, this research aims at identifying and analyzing the factors influencing consumer behavior on what concerns products purchased in the informal economy of the Greater ABC Paulista area. To this end, a qualitative study, with an exploratory character, was conducted. Its primary data was collected though semi-structured interviews. Secondary data were obtained through the literature that refers to consumer behavior, considering the following influencing factors: culture, ethics and social responsibility, as well as the informal economy. Subjects who participated in the interviews were economically active people aged between 25 and 44 years old, who consumed products from the informal trade and who were residents in the Greater ABC Paulista area. Based on the results of empirical research is possible to infer that consumers take part in informal trading due to low prices and accessibility to the market place. This is a culturally established consumption due to its widespread presence amongst social networks of which consumers belong. Overall, respondents showed awareness concerning social and environmental harms and ethical issues of the informal economy, yet little is considered at the time of purchase.

Abstract:
Piracy is the problem that you get when the copyrights are non respected. In this century new knowledge and their diffusion are faster than never before. These innovation lows the physical barriers to the copy and increase the acts of piracy. The purpose of this dissertation has been make a contribution to the knowledge of the piracy problem, the aims were to identify the factors that a consumer uses to decide their behaviour (piracy or not piracy) helping the firms and the legislator in their decisions. An extensive review of the literature was carried out in subjects as: business, legislation, consumer behaviour, ethical aspects in order to select variables and to demarcate the investigation.
This research has been focused in the music piracy that occurs in a country with a high index of piracy (98% according to the IIPA), using qualitative and quantitative methodology. The sample was of 1000 consumers divided into 500 consumers of original CD's and 500 consumers of pirated Cd's, aged between 18 and 30 years old. To build the measuring instrument explanatory variables of the behaviour were included that arose of the literature and of prior exploratory studies, these factors understood ethical aspects, aspects arisen of the theory of the decision reasoned (TRA), the involvement recommended to study the consumer behaviour, supply and demographic aspects.
The results show that the attitudes and the subjective norms of the polled indicate refusal towards the piracy, therefore the explanation of its conduct obeys to other factors. The moral philosophy of the polled is respectful of the universal values and distinguishes the correct conduct of the incorrect one, although there is a disposition to carry out exceptions. The variable implication showed that all the subjects were hardly implied with the musical product and that two of their dimensions (insecurity and symbolism) were able to influence in the conduct. The variable perception of supply and price of the product influences positively in the piracy, finally the demographic variables that influence are the availability of money to expense, the education and the occupation.
The conclusion of the study is that the pirated conduct of the consumer can be explained combining the theoretical models that include variables of the TRA and ethical models. The direct study of the behaviour instead of the intention make necessary the use of additional aspects like de supply of the product (controlled by the business bidder) and the demographic variables (affected by the environment and the economic situation of the place of study), leaving in clear that to change de piracy behaviour means so much tasks of the business firms as of the State.
Besides the final qualitative study contributed to improve the explanations obtained in the quantitative study, they justify their behaviour and give suggestions to improve it or to modify it. The limitations of this study refer to the choice of an specific kind of piracy centred in musical products and young consumers in a tolerant context to the piracy (not trust norms and legal aspects).
As recommendations for future investigations we suggest to carry out more studies of conduct in order to know the influence of the variables that a consumer is faced in a context of rapidity in the innovation and his diffusion by the web have. It is also suggested to tune up the use of instruments and to verify his operation in other cultures; in a global world is necessary to understand if there is a global behaviour.
