As machine-readable data comes to play an increasingly important role in everyday life, researchers find themselves with rich resources for studying society. The novel methods and tools needed to work with such data require not only new knowledge and skills, but also a new way of thinking about best research practices. This book critically reflects on the role and usefulness of big data, challenging overly optimistic expectations about what such information can reveal, introducing practices and methods for its analysis and visualisation, and raising important political and ethical questions re

Abstract:
First appearing in the published medical literature in 1992, evidence-based medicine (EBM) promotes a seemingly irrefutable principle: that clinical decision-making should be based, as much as possible, on the most up-to-date research findings. Nowhere has this idea been more welcome than in psychiatry, a field whose practices continue to be dogged by a legacy of controversial clinical interventions. For advocates, anchoring psychiatric practice in research data makes psychiatry more scientifically valid (meaning more accurate and value-neutral) and, as a result, more ethically legitimate. But

Both modes of inquiry generate actionable data in specific contexts to facilitate positive social change and to further social justice. Abstract:
This book gathers contributions engaging with different data strategies along with their interdisciplinary (legal, economic, and ethical) implications. It aims to contribute to a well-founded discourse about current (and future) data strategies. It does this by using a multi-dimensional approach, combining insights from academia and governmental practice as well as legal and economic viewpoints. Data strategies from both the ‘Global North’ and the ‘Global South’ are covered. The international and comparative focus allows for a discussion of regulatory convergence and dissonance.

This chapter presents the results of the 2011 Psychiatric Times ethics survey of psychiatrists. The nearly seven hundred participants responded to questions exploring opinions on general questions regarding ethical dilemmas and short scenarios on topics in the domains of end-of-life, professional boundaries, conflict of interest and public health. Qualitative and descriptive analysis of the data reveals three broad areas of ethical conflicts in current psychiatric practice: rise of technology, competing agendas, and the ascendency of medication management.

As education becomes more dependent on data-intensive algorithmic systems, private corporate power continues to grow. A netnography is a specific set of related data collection, analysis, ethical, and research practices. The approach has been used to study online collaboration, and the conversations, languages, online behaviours, and symbolic repertoires of different groups. Online netnography is distinct from traditional in-person ethnography. Ethnography focuses on single field sites; netnography addresses the dispersed nature of online sociality. Prolong
