Abstract:
The destruction of man in the Shoah or Holocaust did not mean that Levinas argues in favor of turning away from the socio-historical reality to cultivate his own little garden. The deepest truth of subjectivity can be found in an alterity that calls for a socio-political responsibility. The political implications are rooted in different layers of Levinas’s thought. In his Talmudic comments, Levinas questions the reality of war as the truth of politics. But his explorations of subjectivity, ethical relationality and society allow to understand different political options such as contract theory (responsibility in the first person), liberation philosophy and human rights (responsibility in the second person) and the necessity of building a just society (ethics in the third person). Paradoxically, a just and equitable society ignores the uniqueness of the unique other. While organized responsibility is necessary, it introduces a new form of violence. In this article, we bring together the different layers in Levinas’s political vision and we explore its limits. A fundamental question is whether Levinas’s vision of politics is based on ethics or whether his ethics is a critique of politics.

Abstract:
Diversity matters – theoretically and practically, within philosophy and beyond. It is less clear, however, how we are to conceive of diversity. In current debates it is quite common to discuss diversity as a diversity of social identities. In this paper, I will raise five major concerns with regard to this approach from a philosophical perspective. All of them cast doubt on the flexibility and openness to ambiguity of identity-based concepts of diversity. Contrary to an identity-based concept of diversity, I will propose a perspective that stresses ambiguity and fluidity. In pursuing my argument, I will, after an introduction in §1, outline in §2 how the term ‘diversity’ is commonly used and how social identities come into the picture. In §3, I describe the dangers of an identity-based diversity concept. In my critique I will build on Adorno's thoughts on the formation of concepts and on Appiah's reflections on identity. I will illustrate my critique with examples from a growing field of Applied Ethics, data ethics. In §4, I will sketch an alternative understanding of human diversity, taking up considerations by Thomas Bauer on ambiguity and ambiguity tolerance.

Abstract:
As technology advances, health care decisions have become increasingly complex. American hospitals, based on accreditation standards, are required to have a system and process to address ethics, patient rights, and responsibilities. These practices vary widely, and there is very little consistency and few standards across the country. Key court cases have provided minor structure, and the federal government has been silent in the formulation of these structures but not necessarily in this arena. Most often, these accreditation standards related to clinical ethics are managed by Healthcare Ethics Committees (HEC). Bioethics has become a growing field, the level of integration between this discipline and healthcare practice varies widely. Using qualitative methods based on Grounded Theory, this analysis presents six key thematic findings, as well as interpretations to identify current challenges and opportunities to make recommendations for improvement by enhancing clarity and reducing ambiguity.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis focuses on philosophical themes implicit in corridor conservation, using the Big Thicket National Preserve as an example. The way in which corridors, boundaries and communities are ambiguous, as both limits and connections, is dealt with. Corridor-patch matrices assemble ecological and human groups into temporary communities, often with conflicting interests. Such constellations foreground how a foreigner's boundary crossing is a notion important to both conservation and a philosophical study of being, seen as being always in relation with otherness. In this context, the notion of foreignness and Jean-Luc Nancy's idea of being-with is explored. Understanding the complex network of relations in which an entity exists leads to an awareness of its ambiguous nature. To facilitate judgment with such ambiguity, one needs a contextual understanding of a situation.

Robinson, Jennifer J. "Mindfulness, Tolerance of Ambiguity, and Attitudes Toward Interracial Relationships." Thesis, Alliant International University, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13426037.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> This investigation considered the relationship among attitudes toward interracial relationships, tolerance of ambiguity, and mindfulness using a correlational design. The exploratory research question was: Does a tolerance of ambiguity plays a role in the acceptance of interracial relationships? Adult participants (<i>N</i> = 253) between the ages of 18 and 78 included male, female, and genderqueer adult individuals in the United States. Participants were recruited through online advertisements. They responded to items on a demographic questionnaire, along with four assessment instruments measuring mindfulness (MAAS), tolerance for ambiguity (MSTAT-II), attitudes toward interracial relationships (ATID), and cognitive load (WPM). The key finding in this study was that level of mindfulness was positively related to the level of tolerance for ambiguity (<i>p</i> &lt; .001). However, no significant relationships among mindfulness, cognitive load, or attitudes toward interracial relationships were found. Results for the variable measuring attitudes toward interracial relationships was heavily skewed in the negative direction, indicating a very accepting group, which influenced the nature of data analysis.</p><p>

Gavin, Price. "The reward contingency of ethical attitudes of business stakeholders under conditions of moral ambiguity." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/42029.

Full text
Abstract:
Available theory suggests that both issue and context related factors as well as individual factors influence the ethical decision-making process. This study used an experimental design to investigate whether the issue-related construct reward consequences, an extension of Jones’ (1991) issue-related factor, magnitude of consequences, is a strong predictor of attitude of business stakeholders towards the ethicality of a morally ambiguous action, in this case, a strategic competitor bluff. The study also investigated the predictive capability of the personal moral philosophy dimensions of relativism and idealism in the presence of differential reward consequences in a morally ambiguous context. The study found clear support for the predictive capability of the issue-related factor, reward consequences, for the moral decision-maker, however, the personal factor of business stakeholders’ a priori personal moral philosophy, measured using Forsyth’s (1980) Ethics Position Questionnaire (EPQ), was not found to predict their attitudes towards the morally ambiguous action. These findings were consistent across four different business stakeholder roles considered. The findings did indicate, however, that the relativism dimension of the EPQ moderates the relationship between reward consequences and attitude towards the morally ambiguous action. The contributions of the findings to theory bearing on ethical decision-making in the context of morally ambiguous circumstances and stakeholder management are discussed, as are their implications for business management.<br>Thesis (Ph.D.)--Gordon Institute of Business Science, 2013<br>pagibs2014<br>Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)<br>unrestricted

Abstract:
Architects and designers are obligated to think comprehensively to create aesthetically pleasing buildings together with functional features. The modern movement of architecture represents a dramatic movement in the buildings design to create a different functional and new architecture. There is a debate about the priority of beauty (aesthetics) and functionality (ethics) in this architectural style and leads to ambiguity in evaluating ethics and aesthetics. Hence, the study aims to understand the relationship between ethics and aesthetics value in architecture's modern movement. This study hypothesizes that there is a significant relationship between ethical and aesthetical values through the functionality of modern architecture. The study has proposed a conceptual model to be applied in future studies on different case studies. This is through assessment tools to evaluate the presence of ethics and aesthetics in modern architectural style.
